Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

I think from next week it will be really helpful to share what has been working for us, and what you have all got out of this WOE. Like the goddess, I often look back to my low cal diet days with a sense of wonder (and anger, truth be told) that we are so often advised to try and eat that way if we want to lose weight - and then castigated for our 'lack of willpower' if we can't stick to it - there is so little regard for how awful it can make you feel, or how gnawingly hungry you are. The obsession with food and eating - what can I have, how soon can I have it, how many calories have I got left, etc, is truly dreadful. I remember one evening having a plate of boiled celery for dinner, as that was all the calories I had left for the day. No wonder calorie counting tends to fail!

I think from next week it will help to share these stories, memories and insights, as I suspect it may be the poin at which many of us see the weight loss slow/stop, so we will need this extra inspiration.

(Don't worry - I will keep up the shouting and ranting and widespread use of CAPITALS and bold!)

Here is a challenge - I'm having wisdom teeth out v soon and apparently won't be able to have 'solid' food for a few days - so, soup and more soup?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 19:25

NO!

Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 19:26

Tea: 3 egg smoked salmon and mushroom omelette with huge mixed leaf side salad. Yum yum bubble gum.

slowlyburningcalories · 03/05/2012 19:39

I tink bold is more frightening

I need Wine couldn't sleep until 4am this morning and DD was up at 6.

B - skipped - no time
L - mackeral and salad at 3pm
D - venison burgers and cauliflower

see why I need the Wine?

also - I am thinner - no doubt about it - haven't shed any pounds but staying calm - however I am "baggier" around my tummy and its unsightly - will that improve with litres of water and pilates???

Creamtea1 · 03/05/2012 19:54

Lol @ Biwi
I know really, had to try though :-)
Thinking omelettes should prob be ok anyway

LackaDAILYcarb · 03/05/2012 21:24

Just checking in :)

B: butter scrambled eggs and naice ham

L: lamb kofta kebabs and green salad

D: indoor BBQ, with minted lamb burgers and chicken & chorizo kebabs with homemade coleslaw and garlic mushrooms (and six skinny fries and three spoonfuls of ice cream Blush)

And thanks to my lapse, I am now craving more sugar Angry though I did hand over to my DH the half creme egg I was about to scoff after DS decided he didn't like it...wailing "save me from myself"

And in atonement for my sins I am guzzling water and had a brisk walk to the polling station rather than driving as usual!

IDP arrived today, it will be my carry always companion!

Off to try and catch up, though BIWIthebold has scared me a bit Wink

You could make big batches of mince-based stuff, which will be soft and easy to eat?

slowly - yes, definitely it will improve, especially if you're doing Pilates.

slowlyburningcalories · 03/05/2012 21:31

Won't improve if I hit the beer - oops. Only the one 500ml 3.4% but need to switch off somehow. Tomorrow is another day, DH so tired he has gone to bed at 9.30pm!!!

BIWI the bold

ha ha ha ha ha ha

BIWItheBold · 03/05/2012 21:38

I like that ...

LackaDAILYcarb · 03/05/2012 22:26

:o

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 22:57

Breakfast - bacon, egg and mushrooms
Lunch - Salad with Parma ham and M&S antipasti
Dinner - Gammon steak with home-made coleslaw (chopped cabbage, thin julienne carrots (few), chives, spring onion, mayo) - gammon and coleslaw is a delicious combination.

BIWItheBold · 03/05/2012 22:59

LF - bacon, ham and gammon? Too much processed meat and prob too much salt

Thegoddessblossom · 04/05/2012 08:00

B: Greek yoghurt.

Jacaqueen · 04/05/2012 08:47

Off to Lidl this morning to get some greek yog, olives, chorizo and the like.

Half a pound to go and I will have lost a stone.

I find that some days I feel hungry and seem to eat a lot then the next few days I have no appetite and need to reming myself to have lunch. I guess it all balances out in the end.

LittleFrieda · 04/05/2012 09:05

BIWI - the processed meats. Blush I didn't know that. What is the problem with processed meats? They are carb-free, no?

ShirtyKnot · 04/05/2012 09:23
BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 09:30

LF - they aren't necessarily carb-free - and sometimes they have added sugar. Also, it's about the other ingredients used in the processing. Go back to the rules - we're trying to make sure that we focus on fresh/pure ingredients, with minimal artificial ingredients.

Plus - there will be a lot of added salt in those foods. Salt per se isn't brilliant, but it also encourages water retention - and apparent weight gain.

BIWItheBold · 04/05/2012 09:30

Morning, Shirl!

ShirtyKnot · 04/05/2012 09:39

God BIWI. What was I thinking?

I ended up drinking about a BILLION glasses of red wine. Sad FUUUUUCK! So there, that's my first proper fall off the old LC wagon. I did a ketostix this morning and I'm apparantly still in ketosis though.

The BESTEST thing about this WOE is that you can eat hangover food (had sausages and scrambled egg for brekkie) without fear. Wink Grin

BettyBathroom · 04/05/2012 09:51

LF - when consuming processed meat try to eat it with foods high in Vit C, which limits the nitrates converting to nitrites - which seems to be the problematic part of the process. Peppers are a great source of Vit C, as are lots of other fresh veg or in the morning you many find berries are a more convenient form.

Weight still the same - scales haven't budged in a week!

Breakfast 3 eggs with butter, followed by strawberries & double cream.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 04/05/2012 10:45

Im back, scrambled eggs this morning. H

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 04/05/2012 10:46

oops, was about to confess that I had a piece of DD birthday cake yesterday, but hit post also had Chinese for dinner as per birthday girls request. Had char sui chop suey - didnt eat the carrots but did have bean sprouts. Also had ribs (no sauce) and some of DS beef in black bean sauce. No rice.

Anyway, back to usual now so will move on and drink lots of water today. got 1.5l bottle next to me.

Thegoddessblossom · 04/05/2012 11:17

30 mins hardcore cycling at gym.

snacks: baby bel and pepperami (was starving when I got back)

Shirt - sympathy. But totally agree re hangover food! Ace isn't it! Grin

LittleFrieda · 04/05/2012 11:21

Thanks BIWI and BettyB. In mitigation, I don't eat much salt, I never add it to cooking or to my plate so I'm sure it won't have done any harm.

I thought I was being really strict.
