Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Sorry, LackaDaisy Sad

DoUntoOtters · 04/05/2012 22:10

Sorry about the job, hope something else comes up for you soon.

I went to see the Practice nurse today, and her scales had me at exactly 66kg (clothed) which is 10stone 5.5lbs. This morning I was 10.12 (naked) on the wii scales. So, one of us is way out. Does anyone know if you can re-set the wii board to be more accurate? Or should I invest in a proper set of scales?

DoUntoOtters · 04/05/2012 22:11

Obviously, I am assuming it is our wii that is wrong, and not her scales. Grin

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 04/05/2012 22:13

That was interesting reading biwi will bookmark that link in a mo.

lacka sorry about the teaching job. Sad

LackaDAILYcarb · 04/05/2012 22:13

Thanks BIWI, but it was a long shot even applying in the first place, but they gave me really good feedback and told me that the only thing stopping me from getting it was another candidate with oodles of teaching experience and that my presentation was head and shoulders above the rest , but I lacked the teaching experience. Funny thing is, the job has been readvertised four times due to lack of applicants. If I had seen one of the earlier ones, it would probably have been mine! Normally I would have been feeling rubbish about it, but I am actually bouyed by the whole experience and feeling less like a tumbleweed brained eejit. The prof told me I shouldn't be put off applying for other teaching jobs, or for anything else that comes up in his department.

Still used it as an excuse to hit the wine though Hmm

SharonGless · 04/05/2012 22:34

LackaDaily, sorry to hear you didn't get it but good about the positive feedback. I know what you mean ebout the emotional eating - really clicked with me. I am trying not to do the same with DC as its too easy to say they can have a food reward if good. Ie if you behave whilst doing shopping we will have a drink and biscuit in cafe. Shame though

Thegoddessblossom · 05/05/2012 08:59

Chinese last night and several glasses of red. Chose beef and beansprouts, and ribs with no sauce on.

Breakfast - greek yog with a few blackberries, although a bit worried about introducing berries again as was at target last week without eating any berries at all.

Thegoddessblossom · 05/05/2012 08:59

Sorry about job Lackadaily.

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 10:02

Morning all - just to say

Next weigh-in is Monday

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 10:03

... and I'm fairly sure I will be reporting a gain Sad

I know, from keeping a daily record of my weight, that reporting a big drop, as I have done in the last couple of weeks, often results in a bounce back up, which can take a while to balance out.

Knowing this doesn't make it any easier to see the scales starting with a 10 again, though.

DoUntoOtters · 05/05/2012 10:21

That's actually quite reassuring for those of us who are new to this WOE, BIWI. I got quite disheartened when I gained 2lbs in week 3. I had had a little cheat, but nothing that seemed to deserve such a gain.

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 10:54

It definitely pays to understand that weight loss is not linear - it is a bit of a mantra! It is very easy to get downhearted - I am finding it difficult to accept seeing a 10 on the scales, even though I know this is an established pattern as far as my body is concerned.

It also illustrates the value of charting your weight loss (ideally in combination with a detailed food diary) so that you can see how things work for you - everyone is different.

And I also know that part of the gain for me comes with a relaxation of my eating - so I re-introduced nuts, and Atkins Daybreak bars - and it just shows how much of an effect they can have.

That said, I am definitely slimmer, and inclined to believe that the 9 something weight is more likely for me at the moment. And I can tell that not from the scales but from the fit of my clothes. I wore a tight-fitting t-shirt to the gym last week - one which I thought I would never, ever wear again! And there is nothing hanging over the top or sides of my bra now.

Go back and read the post I made about patterns of weight loss too, at the beginning of this thread.

Seeing a gain can make you feel very despondent (been there, got the t-shirt), but it is comforting knowing some of this stuff - and remembering that you are in this (hopefully) for a longer term gain.

MNP · 05/05/2012 16:06

So good news with the bad Lacka

Chinese meal out tonight with supportive friends. Will have beansprouts in place of rice.

I find a detailed menu plan for the week helps with any hungry moments.

Thegoddessblossom · 05/05/2012 17:01

Lunch - salad with Asparagus heads, mushrooms and coleslaw, a baby bel and a pepperami.

slowlyburningcalories · 05/05/2012 20:33

Ok. I need help. Lots of help.

I am driving four hours to the south west this week one evening, what do I eat and drink on the way? Also. Two days of conference and travel inn. Help!

Also. I need to cook (away from home) a weeks worth of evening LC friendly meals. I will do BiWIs shepherds pie for two nights and a roast chicken for another night (but reheating it is usually stir fried rice or sweet and sour noodles neither of which I can eat). Wuld be so amazing to have some help as that will ensure my 'holiday' week is as low carb as possible. Had a run in with some cake at my MILs today and feeling quite icky now.

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 21:11

slowly - see if you can hold of some shirataki noodles - truly they are fabulous and will mean you can have a stir fry. (They are zero carbs)

When you're driving to the SW, what route are you taking? Are you going via the A303 by any chance?

Go to the recipe thread - there are lots of things you can cook there. I can vouch for the Spanish chicken - truly yummy.

Oh - I made an absolutely yummy Yotto Ottolenghi recipe tonight, for turkey burgers with wasabi sauce - I will post the recipe

BIWItheBold · 05/05/2012 21:13

Sorry - Yotam Ottolenghi

BettyBathroom · 05/05/2012 22:22

I have sinned! Badly! Had the most amazing vegetarian food ever - the food was quite possibly the best I have ever tasted - My waistline may suffer but it was beyond worth it. Will be good tomorrow.Grin

ShirleyKnot · 05/05/2012 23:03

I had 90 percent cococococoa chocolate today.

Oh.

My

GOD

Thegoddessblossom · 06/05/2012 10:18

We went out for dinner at friends last night. Bless her, knowing my WoE, she had cooked:

Watercress soup
Cod wrapped and bacon and veg
greek yoghurt and strawberry individual pots.

Have gained 2 pounds tho, wine I expect. Sad

B: 2 egg, 2 bacon, mushrooms and plum tomatoes, fried in butter.

BettyBathroom · 06/05/2012 10:47

I had:

Brie Ice Cream and Victoria Plum Chutney
Caraway Seed Cornets and Toasted Hazelnut

Salted and Ash Baked Celeriac and Foraged Garlic Leaf
Whey Poached Celeriac, Purple Brocolli, Curd and Elderflower Cream

Which wasn't too carby but then I gave in to the pudding

Liquid Doughnut and Warm Espresso Gel
Milk Parfait, Yeast Sugar and Coffee Crumbs

Scales not looking as bad as I expected - we ate zero carbs for the rest of the day which will help a little - in my view if you are going to fall off the wagon the food should justify the fall and it did!

I begged the chef to write a cookbook!

teaandthorazine · 06/05/2012 11:20

Betty that sounds amazing! Where did you go?

Fell off the wagon last night, booze wise, but food wise only succumbed to two small sausage rolls at the party. Feel like crap this morning so am having a low carb fry up but have given myself permission for chocolate and a nap later Grin.

Strange thing is I begged dp to get me some crusty white bread this morning because I thought I wanted toast - ate it and it was pappy and tasteless - how my tastebuds have changed!

BettyBathroom · 06/05/2012 11:39

We went to Vanilla Black in London.

BIWItheBold · 06/05/2012 12:36

That sounds fabulous, Betty.
