Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Really needed my Mn support network last night but bloody server kept crashing.
Started reading IPD last night and really emotionally connected with it

londonone · 01/05/2012 18:00

Sharon - Have you got to the bit about how losing a few pounds and feeling fantastic can lead to wardrobe malfunctions i.e wearing stuff that you probably aren't quite ready for! Really made me laugh. On a positive note I can now easily fit into trouser that I could barely squeeze into last summer and am almost in some trousers I bought 2 years ago on the basis I was going to lose weight. Yay

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 18:05

It's a really good book for that very reason.

I went shopping on Saturday, and realised that I can now shop differently. Instead of looking for stuff that will flare over my tummy, I can actually buy stuff that is slim-fitting instead! Woo hoo.

Haven't bought clothes like that for years.

London - no not got to that part yet. Totally got the part about using food as a reward/emotional comfort. Trouble is I don't know if I like myself as much as I need to Sad

londonone · 01/05/2012 18:36

Sorry to hear that Sharon. What do you do that makes you feel good? When do you feel at your best?

SharonGless · 01/05/2012 18:40

God long story, need to work on doing things for me. Am pretty rubbish at it and am the strong one for everyone else.
Am re reading the chapter on how to be more selfish! Need to get some tips.
I know what I should do just working full time on shifts, with two DC ,problems with DH struggle to cope with it all. Not drinking in the evening will help plus lighter nights (if it ever stops raining)

londonone · 01/05/2012 18:48

Yes, selfish is good. By the sounds of things you are one of those lovely souls who looks after everyone else but not yourself. Sun is out in London so will try and send sunny vibes your way!

I was bad. Not only did I have some cake (it was yummy) but a crusty bread roll. I now look about 5 months pregnant and feel really uncomfortable. Think it was the bread, as have had the odd cake cheat, and was fine, but I had a slice of toast last week and felt the same. It may actually have taught me a lesson....

Oops

GreenEyesAndHam · 01/05/2012 19:10

A crusty bread roll.....that sounds divine...

But actually if there's one thing I've learned recently, it's that I really shouldn't eat bread (or wheat? Not sure). I'm gobsmacked at how much better I feel and look for not eating it.

Lilyloo · 01/05/2012 19:13

Have done ok today but not sure about dinner
B - egg, bacon, mushroom
L - leftover chilli
D - salad, prawns cooked in chilli and a crustless quiche (not sure if that ok or not was a weight watchers one)

SharonGless · 01/05/2012 19:16

Thanks London, hard day week in lots of ways so this Woe is good for me to realize I don't need to use food as emotional crutch.

Have had to eat
Salami and Philly
Tuna mayo plus green salad
Boiled egg as a snack
Tea is salmon leeks and mushrooms in butter and broccoli yum

MrsNouveauRichards · 01/05/2012 19:16

I don't know if it is wheat or yeast. As it is only bread that does it. Not cake or wraps or pitta or anything, just normal bread, especially white. Made in our breadmaker wholegrain seems ok though, so maybe a preservative?

Badcat666 · 01/05/2012 20:52

I'm making a cake.... my famous lemon drizzle cake... and I haven't licked the spoon! A first! :o Tis for a birthday and was asked so was very brave and it's baking in the oven as I type, eveything went in the sink straight away though, just in case I lost it.

If it was crisps mind you I'd be whipping myself now with my wooden spoon.

B - 2 slices of edam and 3 slices chicken breast
L - more chicken slices and a tomato and mozz... didn't eat it all as felt bit sicky
D - homemade beef curry
snacks - some almonds and handful of raspberries as needed something SWEEEEET!

Thegoddessblossom · 01/05/2012 20:55

Tea: chicken breast wrapped in bacon with herby philly cheese, with courgettes, and yellow and red peppers.

2 G&Ts - have my reasons tonight. Sad

SharonGless · 01/05/2012 21:02

Oh dear thegoddess sending positive vibes. Yummy tea though - might do that tomorrow, you have inspired me.

MNP · 01/05/2012 21:19

Tea was salmon fillet with pizza mozzarella wrapped in Parma ham with purple broccoli, leek, scallion, courgette ribbons, baby corn and green pepper with a 1/4 of chicken stock cube.

Brekkie tomorrow on the road is salami and dairy lea slices sandwiches with cucumber and 4 cherry toms.
Lunch will be at friends house so have made blitzed prawns with mayo between little gem leaves with rare roast beef and mozzarella.
Dinner will be at home and meat platter-bacon, sausage and burger with spinach and asparagus.

MrsNouveauRichards · 01/05/2012 21:19

Hope all ok, I think G&T is much better than bread and cake :o

slowlyburningcalories · 01/05/2012 21:39

Evening all. Am in bed, am v v v tired. Toddler has decided that she is going to wake every hour for past two nights and so DH's turn tonight, add to that imminent AF, and my family sending me begging contact emails when I haven't even had a chance to brush my hair all day got right on my (.)(.) s

and I have to have an operation on my breast which will mean I can't feed DD for a few days, can't lift her or drive either for 48hours. It's urgent so they said Saturday Shock but I have to drive 400miles next week so they have postponed it to the end of May. Still a bit in shock though.

Forgot breakfast due to above news.
Lunch was cold lightly smoked salmon fillet 2 for £5 and to die for with malt and green salad
Dinner was BIWIs shepherd pie with cauliflower

Tomorrow, eggs and bacon for breakfast, smoked mackerel and olive salad for lunch and reheat of shepherds pie for tea after pilates.

slowlyburningcalories · 01/05/2012 21:40

Oh and despite above news I still managed not to give in to chocolate muffin, raspberry flapjack or bag of grapes, all of which were offered yo me before midday!

heartstart · 01/05/2012 21:54

Slowly sounds like you're having a difficult time hope all ok. Well done re food
