Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Ah OK. I won't do it. BUT I really fancy doing it. I thought I wasn't particularly addicted to sugar but I must be. Gah. How long does it take for the cravings for sweet things to disappear?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 11:44

I suspect it will take at least a couple of weeks - I think that's why Atkins created his induction period to last that length of time.

Sorry for the ranty stuff, btw Blush

I just don't want to see you sabotage the good work that you have already done.

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 12:13

BIWI Grin Please don't apologise. It is a lot like S&M this thread: we are all consenting adults, a little out of our depth, but BIWI has whips and stuff.

FourThousandHoles · 03/05/2012 12:19

Hello, am back after a short spell in RL. Have lost 8lbs in total so far.

Re cravings - I found that they passed after the first couple of weeks, although I still get the odd pang, it's not all consuming like it was and far easier to ignore.

That said... last Friday I had the most hideous day at work and came home and hit the choc/wine. I felt like shit on Saturday - not enough wine for a proper hangover Grin but I was back to my carby hangover feelings of Wk 1. I got back on the wagon sharpish and felt much better by Sunday. Lesson learned.

I'm off out for a meal and drinkies on Sat - should be able to stick to steak'n'salad and vodka'n'soda though.

Other than the above I'm still bootcamping, I'm finding it works for me really well and I'm not missing what I can't have. Any more.

Yesterday one of dd1's friends came over for tea after school and sent herself hurtling across our patio face first, she bit her lip and grazed her face, arm and leg. I couldn't get hold of her mum and I was panicking a bit but thankfully it was all fairly superficial although she did go home looking like she'd been beaten up. On top of that, potty training dd2 laid 2 massive turds around the house yesterday and this morning she was sick in the car on the way home from school. Normally I'd be half way down a large bar of dairy milk by now and planning wine for tonight, but no, I am eating salad with cheese & mayo and sipping water and crying smiling beatifically.

MrsNouveauRichards · 03/05/2012 12:19

Don't worry BIWI, I will place all blame on myself when I get fat :o

Maybe this is the wrong place for me, as I am perhaps not as serious about LC as others and it undermines others good work when I cheat. For me it is working, I am on lower carb rather than LC and it seems that it is still working and fitting in with my lifestyle. I understand how the diet works and will know what to cut out if I start putting weight on.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/05/2012 13:08

off to weigh myself...

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 13:10

Gimp mask?

Shit!

Well done in the face of adversity 4000holes. Grin

Mrs Nouveau - can only echo what BIWI says - if you are eating things like cake and honey you are not giving yourself a chance to ever stop craving them.

L: coleslaw, pate, chunk of cheese, tuna, salad.

1.5 litres down.

Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 13:17

weighing in the middle of the day? Are you mad? Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/05/2012 13:53

Lunchtime!

teaandthorazine · 03/05/2012 13:57

Sashimi box from yo sushi for lunch - yum!

Plenty of water so far, no idea about dinner though. Am in uni all day and feeling a bit headachey but think that's more to do with rooms with no windows!

BettyBathroom · 03/05/2012 14:27

Boy that was hard - I've just made cookies for the school bake sale and managed not to lick the spoon, they are in the oven - I'm almost traumatised.

Breakfast - Total Full fat with vanilla Extract & Stevia
Lunch - Prawn, cucumber chilli & coconut salad

Have now finished the packet of Macademia nuts and I am not buying any more!!

Livelongandprosper · 03/05/2012 14:46

Hi everyone, well done us for still being here in the third week and welcome to all the new losers .

I weighed myself this morning, 9st 3lbs. Have put a pound back on but can't say I'm surprised as I have had no movement on the bowel front for at least a week.

Still eating lots of salmon, prawns, bacon (sorry BIWI) and veggies and drinking lots of water. It appears to be all in the planning for me, I really need to work at having enough of the right stuff for variety in the house.

Sugar is no longer my master, although it does make a very nice little friend in times of stress or boredom so I have bought some knitting needles and wool and intend to knit whenever the urge to eat sweets hits me.

Maybe I could knit some sweets?

Livelongandprosper · 03/05/2012 15:24

Betty Are the cookies out of the oven and have you resisted trying them?

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/05/2012 16:05

nothing to report.

Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 16:05

Hi Livelong. We are the same weight. How much more are you looking to lose? I would be very happy if I could just maintain now.

BettyBathroom · 03/05/2012 16:58

I am saint-like. Cookies have been resisted, dcs had one each and then I bagged them up for tomorrow. Shock

MNP · 03/05/2012 18:14

D: crispy belly pork with spinach and mayo.

Livelongandprosper · 03/05/2012 18:15

Hi Thegoddess, I am not looking to lose any more weight either. I am moving onto Bootcamp light to try to maintain my weight without sneaking in the sweet stuff that had taken over my life pre-bootcamp. I need to be vigilant because the cake will creep back in through sheer habit if I am not careful. What's your weak point?

Betty - you have my deepest and most sincere admiration.

WillieWaggledagger · 03/05/2012 18:22

i think my dairy intake has been increasing week on week. I think I might have a week off dairy from monday (have already planned and shopped for meals until then and it includes cheese and cream...)

except for butter obv

BettyBathroom · 03/05/2012 18:25

I'm maintaining too. I want this bootcamp to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 18:40

Just typed a huge post and lost it Grrr...

Bascially, glad others are looking to maintain as that will motivate me loads.

A low fat regime, that I have followed forever had the following effects;

had to eat every 3 hours or was weak kneed, starving and faint. Would com in from the station and have to sit on the stairs and demand DH fetched me a bagel or somthing bread like to stuff in

Always felt hungry

Felt saintlike for denying myself high calorie foods, but then had slips and over ate

On this WOE I am full, content, and in control of my weight.

Livelong, my weaknesses are wine, and the savoury snack type things that go with it. Grin
