Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Peas Shock
Now that does deserve not only an apology but a punishment.

Drop to the deck and give me 50.

Morning BIWI.....

LackaDAILYcarb · 03/05/2012 07:59

Morning all :)
I'm also feeling quite euphoric that sugar has lost its grip on me! The kids had some mini haribo yesterday and I would usually be swiping them sneakily, or have my own at the same time. Not this time, they all offered me some, and I took one and didn't even enjoy it that much. And at the corner shop I am normally sucked In by the offers on sweets and chocolate at the till, but not any more :o
I also needed to grab a quick ready meal for tea last night. The kids had pizza, and I had the only GF thing they had which was. chicken tikka masala and rice. I did a quick spinach and aubergine curry and piled the meat (with not a lot of the sauce) on top. The rice is still in the fridge.

It's definitely getting easier :)

BettyBathroom · 03/05/2012 08:17

Great news Lack

I'm not finding myself craving any starchy foods and although I'm feeling very snacky atm, nuts & yummy cheese seem to be filling the void. Which might explain why I have stalled Hmm

Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 08:54

B: small amount of greek yoghurt

MrsNouveauRichards · 03/05/2012 09:09

Morning.

B - yoghurt with flaxseed, strawberries and a teeny bit of honey.

I am going to a friends for dinner this evening (with kids) and I am taking pudding. I was going to make fairy cakes for the kids, but obviously want something less bad for me and friend (also dieting) so was thinking of making some some teeny espresso cupcakes (petit four size) and that wouldn't be too bad? Not great I know, but Thursdays are our treat day.

teaandthorazine · 03/05/2012 09:24

morning all!

Feel pretty good today. I dropped out of ketosis for a couple of days due to CAKE but appear to be back in this morning.

have had to drill another notch into my belt for my skinnies Grin

Bought some flaxseed from H&B yesterday - cocoa and berry flavour. I had it with some total yog yesterday which wasn't great tbh but... added it to my protein shake this morning and it was fine. result! am going to make some brownies with it for Le weekend, I think.

am not recognising myself really - breakfast used to be, ummmm, nothing or sugary cereal. now it's a protein shake with flax, vitamin tablet and chromium Grin. Think I'm turning Healthy!!

ShirtyKnot · 03/05/2012 09:34

Morning!

Well that pound went back on this morning! Ha! It's mad, because I've had to do my belt up an extra notch this morning - so UP YOURS scales.

This IPD WOE is very dairy heavy isn't it? I'm considering cutting the old cream and cheese out for a week, but honestly? I really like it Grin, I'm presuming that even though it can slow weight loss, it will eventually come off.

Breakfast - Buffalo mozzarella, avocado, tomato, fresh basil, EVOO (nicking that). The mozzarella is amazing, reduced in M&S and should have been eaten yesterday but I am feeling invincible! Wink
Lunch - Meurguez sausage casserole left over from last night - Amazing bastardized IPD recipe and utterly delish - with buttered cabbage.
Dinner - Beef stroganoff, asparagus maybe, cauliflower mash maybe.

MrsNouveau - can you make some carb friendly cakes? There are recipes on the recipe thread and I can probably google something suitable for you?

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 09:38

Grin at apologising for eating strawberries and peas.

DH has a cold flu. What does one do when one is ill? Give up bootcamp for a few days until you get better or carry on?

I am builders and plumbers here today and I'm having to serve up plates of biscuits and cakes every couple of hours. Agony.

I would love nothing more than a slice of lemon tart and a big dollop of creme fraiche with a cup of tea. But I'm soldiering on. I've been very strict and haven't cheated once.

I discovered something potentially useful this morning in M&S. A little tub of Antipasti (sundried tomatoes, artichokes and olives in olive oil) perfect with a bag of washed watercress for an instant salad. Its carb count is 2.1g per 100g.

encyclogirl · 03/05/2012 09:39

Good morning all! Well done breakout it will get easier, you toughed it out and that's the main thing.

Lack I have to agree, carbs hold no fear for me now. I'm visiting my parents this weekend. It's a total carbfest in that house, but I know I'll be fine. I simply won't eat them, and that will be that.

Well done on the belt notch tea

Had my usual soft boiled eggs for breakfast. smoked salmon salad for lunch. Need to think about dinner.

This thread is really helping keeping me in the straight and narrow!

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 09:40

I am have builders and plumbers here today. Although my jeans are so baggy I could do a reasonable version of builder's bum. Grin

encyclogirl · 03/05/2012 09:52

Oh and btw, I am one of the week 5 stallers on the scale. I absolutely KNOW I'm smaller, all my clothes tell me so, but the scale has.not.budged.

I was sure I'd lost at least 2, got on the scale, no movement.

I am unbowed however, because a) this bloody food is yummy, b) I don't have any cravings for snacks c) I'm not bloated anymore d) I've lost 12lbs in 5 weeks and I'm significantly smaller in size.

I fully expect the sciencey part to take over next week and my body to start shedding 1lbs on the scales again :)

BettyBathroom · 03/05/2012 09:53

Oh bloody hell I've bought another cookbook....help I am addicted to cookbooks - shelves are bursting but I still need more. Blush Will get lots of eyerolling from dh when he finds out.

George Stella Livin-low-carb

George is a chef and his wife is a pastry chef - so I have high hopes for the foodie quality of this book. I am not buying anymore cookbooks written by bloody Doctors - what on earth was I thinking - definitely not!

There a book preview freely available on this book on Amazon and George tells his huge weight gain & weight loss story - it's quite touching....recommended reading for anyone who needs a little motivational boost.

Will let you all know what I think of the book when it arrives from the USA.

flipflopflap · 03/05/2012 10:18

Morning all. Been neglecting the thread a little as I've been a busy bee, but I'm still bootcamping.

I've got an unexpected night out with friends on Saturday, so alcohol will be involved. Going to stick to trusty vodka and sodas though. Also hoping I've shed enough to fit into a dress I've got that's been a teeny bit too tight. Fingers crossed!

Today:

B: Alpro yogurt, LC Granola.
L: Cheese salad, mayo
D: Veg Curry. Cauli Rice.

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 10:37

fff - good luck with sliding into that dress. What is cauliflower rice?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 10:46

MrsNouveauRichards - you are eating honey and planning on cake?!

Are you mad? Neither of those are acceptable on Bootcamp Light - and you will really, seriously scupper your weight loss. Please don't do it! Seriously. You shouldn't be even thinking about cakes, never mind planning them in - and I don't care if Thursday is your treat day. That is not low carbing.

Shirl - are you sure your scales are working?! I agree with the IPD being a bit heavy on cream - I avoid most of the recipes in the book for that very reason - I have found that cream is one thing that does stop weight loss for me (and I suspect cheese, if I eat too much), so it might be worth cutting down on that?

OP posts:
BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 10:48

encyclogirl - keep sticking to it - you will see the scales move for you again. Just make sure that you're being scrupulous about your carbs, and that you're not allowing carb creep. Keeping a food diary is very good to help with this.

OP posts:
Thegoddessblossom · 03/05/2012 10:53

I have to say that my mouth filled with drool (attractive) at the description of the lemon cake with creme fraiche above. And I don't even DO cakes.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 10:56

OK - I know that some of you have moved onto Bootcamp Light, which is less restrictive than Bootcamp. But that doesn't mean you can go mad and start introducing sugar or sweets or chocolate or cake.

That way fatness lies

The whole point of this WOE is to sever the ties that you have with carbohydrates - and especially with sugar. All that you will do it you continue to include carbs, whilst eating a high fat diet, is to put more weight on.

And I don't want to be responsible for that!

OP posts:
SharonGless · 03/05/2012 11:08

Ooh BIWI is getting all masterful! Been at work since 6am so having lunch now which is homemade chilli but have no veg/salad as forgot itSad

Will have some when I finish. Going away with friend for weekend camping so planning our menu now although there will be couple of vodkas thrown in

Well done Shirley good to see you back btw and sticking at it

LittleFrieda · 03/05/2012 11:09

If I ate one meringue carbs 11g and cream and one strawberry and only watercress and a bit of broccoli and zero-carb protein that day, would that be ok? As I would fall within my 20g of carbs?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 03/05/2012 11:12

Well, LF, you are responsible for your choices! If you can manage to do that without going for a second meringue, or more strawberries - and sticking to your zero carbs - then fine.

But don't forget that eating sugary/sweet stuff can lead to more cravings - and it's exactly those cravings that we're trying to stop.

OP posts:
ShirtyKnot · 03/05/2012 11:21

BIWI I know what you're saying about cream and cheese and I definitely think I'll try and cut them out for a week, but they do make me HAPPY Grin

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 11:24

BIWI I don't know if you are more scary when you type in Caps or when you type in bold. Grin

I weighed myself this morning - the bastard scales flickered down to 10.4 but then went back up to just over 10.5. I really really want to get to 10.3 as it will be a clear 2 stone loss since I started, but 10.4 would be great as that is what I weighed just over a year ago (so back to normality). I know it's only a number but really helps psychologically.

I am still being very good, eating lots and lots of veg. Shirl - I never eat cream - it is not something I buy really and I don't want to risk stalling but I eat shedloads of cheese.

Macadamia nuts for breakfast

Can someone keep me away from the Mumsnet and Macdonalds thread? Someone on there has said that the MCd brownies are delicious.

ShirtyKnot · 03/05/2012 11:29

How are you GOML, are you better sweetheart?

Step away from that thread - I was going to post that the objections shouldn't be to the food but their shady business practices and then just CBA. Grin
