Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Re Lunch - I was limited by the fact it had to be something I could eat in my car with no utensils, possibly whilst driving!

STOP PRESS - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Biwi please don't tell me off, but I have made some lovely low carb brownies :) I think recipe is from the book that Betty linked to earlier.

I did half quantities and only cooked them for about 25 mins in a 160 Fan oven and they were done plenty i think if you do 40 mins at 175 they will be very dry. I also missed out the coffee and salt as my cream cheese is quite salty. I used lindt 90% chocolate.

They are lovely and only 1.5 grams of carb per brownie. I won't make them again as I am on bootcamp but it assuaged my baking urge.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:
?10 ounces (285 g) cream cheese, at room temperature
?16 Tbsp (240 ml) unsalted butter, at room temperature (2 sticks)
?4 ounces (112 g) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
?1/4 cup (60 ml) each Splenda and Canadian Sugar Twin or 1 cup (240 ml) Splenda
?4 large eggs
?2 tsp (10 ml) instant coffee granules
?1-1/2 tsp (7.5 ml) pure vanilla extract
?1-1/2 tsp (7.5 ml) pure chocolate extract (optional)
?1-1/2 cups (360 ml) almond meal (finely ground almonds)
?6 Tbsp (90 ml) Dutch-processed cocoa powder
?1/4 tsp (1.2 ml) sea salt
?1-1/2 tsp (7.5 ml) baking powder

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 13 x 9-inch (32.5 x 22.5-cm) baking pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Beat in the chocolate and sweetener. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time, scraping the bowl well after each addition. Add the coffee and vanilla and chocolate extracts. Beat until combined.

In a medium bowl, mix the almond meal, cocoa, salt, and baking powder. Add to the chocolate mixture and beat well. Scrape into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the top is firm. Cool on a wire rack before cutting. Store brownies covered, in the refrigerator.

Yield: 48 brownies

Per brownie. Effective carbohydrates: 1.5 g; Carbohydrates: 2.1 g; Fiber: 0.6 g; Protein: 2.1 g; Fat: 9.7 g; Calories: 99
Made with Splenda only: Add 0.3 g carbohydrates

GreenEyesAndHam · 02/05/2012 20:32

I've completely got used to the water drinking.

In fact, I've turned into one of 'those' people who can't cross a room without a bottle of water in hand Hmm

I always seem to wake up really thirsty now though

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 20:33

BROWNIES ARE NOT FOR BOOTCAMP!

... but can you post that on the recipe thread, londonone?

OP posts:
londonone · 02/05/2012 20:36

You are merciless BIWI! (but quite right!)

On recipe thread now. Only for bootcamp lighters!

I feel suitably chastised Blush

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 20:37

No slacking on my watch

Hey BIWI -

This bootcamp looks fab!
Have not been around for a little while as had a media meltdown with iphone & laptop dieing all within a few days of each other so am just catching up now...

I wish I could commit to low carb but I HATE the sugar/carb crash I suffer and cant seem to get past it.

Totally want to do it just cant :(

I need to lose a 1 stone to be happy.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 02/05/2012 20:46

I want some biscuits Sad

londonone · 02/05/2012 20:48

YOu can do it butterfly. All the ladies here are so supportive. Just think once you are through the crash you will feel much better in general and you will no longer be ruled by sugar Grin

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 20:48

How long does the crash last for you, butterfly? How about if you took it more slowly - cut the carbs gradually rather than straight away - that might help.

BreakOut - don't do it! Go for a walk, have a bath, eat a piece of cheese - just don't give in. It's the sugar addiction talking to you!

OP posts:
Badcat666 · 02/05/2012 20:50

Stay away from the biscuits! Have just eaten 3 boiled eggs as the biscuit barrel was calling to me, tidied the kitchen while they boiled so I didn't hear the biscuits pleading to be released from their tin :)

ohforfoxsake · 02/05/2012 20:50

will keep that brownie recipe for later...

wouldn't it be better to weigh in on a Friday before we all cheat over the weekend

That's not the way to look at it is it? Grin

encyclogirl · 02/05/2012 20:53

Tough it out Brealout Have a cuppa or some water. I kicked myself out of ketosis this weekend and once I fell out all I could think about was food.

Back in it now and 3 meals are plenty. You really don't want those biscuits.

Butterfly you can, of course you can. I've managed 5 and half weeks so far, that's after 5 months of an inner battle where I kept trying to find a comprise that allowed me some white carbs. Totally didn't work needless to say.

If anything I feel liberated from the stupid carb addiction.

Mind you I have nearly everyone in my life telling me I'll die from this Hmm

encyclogirl · 02/05/2012 20:53

Breakout even

BettyBathroom · 02/05/2012 21:03

Feeling really snacky atm and eating too many Macadamia nuts and some Petit Basque cheese.

So I walked for 90mins this morning and 30 mins this afternoon - can't run due to slightly knackered knee.

B - Parmesan, tomato & spring onion muffin
L - Leftovers - gnocchi with tomato sauce and steam broccoli dressed with EVOO
D - Tomato & Artichoke Stew with side of Broccoli

butterflyexperience · 02/05/2012 21:05

BIWI A few days.

I managed to break it earlier this year, stopped eating carbs, sugar and drinking tea but then I got Flu so all went out the window and now its murder trying to start again.
If theres any choc in the house I scoff it Blush

encyclogirl - 5.5 weeks is great! well done you :)
I would love to break my food addictions, I just KNOW I would lose weight and have more energy and not be such a moody bitch person.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 21:42

Well, we would all like you not to be a moody bitch! So surely a few days is worth a go?

If you plan it really carefully, you could do a phased thing?

BettyBathroom - what is EVOO?!

OP posts:
BreakOutTheKaraoke · 02/05/2012 21:59

I had a cup of tea, a pint of water, a cheese triangle, and a square of dark chocolate. I've come to bed as I'm not sure I could resist the Warburtons if I was downstairs. Not even hungry, I just have that itch for it now, the one that only eating something stodgy can curb. I just need to keep picturing how flat my belly could be, with no bread!

slowlyburningcalories · 02/05/2012 22:18

I did my pilates class again this evening, I will have buns of steel and a flat stomach if I keep it up. It is bloody hard but great.

DH wanted to buy me a foodie treat while he drank beer so bought me strawberries, I couldn't say no as they are my favourite and a rare treat so had half a dozen. Sorry BIwI

SharonGless · 02/05/2012 22:25

Slowly are you on boot amp lite? If so you are allowed a few berries. I do Pilates as part of my physio and liked it, looking for a class nearby now

BettyBathroom · 02/05/2012 22:34

BIWI EVOO is Extra Virgin Olive Oil Smile

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 22:58

Ah! Thank you.

slowly - I bet you never thought you'd be apologising to someone for eating six strawberries, did you?!

OP posts:
slowlyburningcalories · 02/05/2012 23:18

Never thought I ever apologise for eating peas either ;-)
