Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

hello to happyhappymummy Smile

and Yay to the pound loss Shirl Grin

I have a quick question. Reading the IPD cookbook and in the little run down of the rules they say limit sparkly water to two glasses a day and that vitamin supplements are a must.

In absence of the actual book (hard copy winging it's way as I type) can anyone explain why this is. I've rather been enjoying sparkly as a way to wean myself off fizzy pop, and I am eating more healthily than ever before, so why the need for supplements?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 13:18

I have never really understood their advocacy of supplements, LackaDaisy - if you're eating veg/salad with at least two of your meals, and focusing on quality meat/fish, then I don't see why you would need them. I've never bothered, to be honest.

I also ignore the 'advice' about sparkling water - it's what I drink all the time (apart from coffee and wine). Frankly, I've given up drinking any other soft drinks so I'm blowed if I'm going to give sparkling water up as well!

I'll have a look at the book to see what their reasons are/if they give any.

This morning I felt desperate for orange juice and a big bowl of Alpen. But I resisted. It made me wonder if I need some sort of vitamin supplement.

I'm probably very short of vitamin C, no? Apart from broccoli, I'm not really getting it from anywhere.

slowlyburningcalories · 02/05/2012 14:24

Thank you for good wishes all - Lacka DD will be almost 22 mo at the time of op so shouldn't create supply issues, my main concern will be lifting her and driving, neither of which I will find comfortable for a day or two apparently.

I opted for some prawn mayo from the co-op at lunchtime - feeling very decidedly dodgy now - eugh. Maybe lack of water as only had a coffee since breakfast. oops.

ShirtyKnot · 02/05/2012 14:25

I've just ordered the supplements, I feel a bit about it and then thought "in for a penny". I also ordered some sample whey protein shakes. Hmmm, I'm wondering how I'm going to get on with that!

Do you smoke Frieda? I know you're meant to up your vit c if you do (but it can't hurt to take some vit c anyway!)

GreenEyesAndHam · 02/05/2012 14:37

I read IPD and dutifully coughed up the dosh for the supplements that they order you to take

I feel fine, but then I don't know how I'd feel doing this without them Grin

I did stop taking the psyllium husks though, as I was getting quite severe stomach cramps- these did stop as soon as I gave up the capsules

Thegoddessblossom · 02/05/2012 14:57

L: creamy coleslaw, mackerel fillet, celery and asparagus heads with gaucamole and pate.

BIWI please don't shout at me for s stupid question but is this TOO much fat? Hmm

Badcat666 · 02/05/2012 15:07

ahhh, pondering giving up using the psyllium husks as I don't think they agree with my bottom, am stuffing face with more veg than I used to eat so am pretty sure will be getting enough fibre!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 15:21

I wouldn't have thought that was too much fat. Depends also on how big your portions were! Was it home-made coleslaw though? If not, did you check the sugar/carb content? Similarly the guacamole and the pate?

And it's not a stupid question! I don't, actually, know the answer anyway!

Re supplements/vitamin C - I know that Charles Clarke suggests that you eat an orange daily, to ensure that you get sufficient vitamin C, so on that basis, I suppose it could be a good idea to supplement the diet in some way. However, the interesting thing about supplements is the RDA. You could buy a supplement that guarantees you will get your RDA of vitamin C in one dose/tablet. Sounds great, doesn't it?

But did you know - the RDA of vitamin C is the amount that you need daily to stop you getting scurvy?! I would suggest that RDA guidelines are possibly a little out of date/lacking in relevance - and that we are much more likely to be getting the vitamins we need from our food!

Little Frieda - are you not eating any other veg or anything else that will give you vitamin C?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 15:28

An interesting article here on where you can get your vitamins from

And from another site - sources of vitamin C (I've taken out anything that isn't allowed in Bootcamp/Bootcamp Light!):

"Some excellent sources of vitamin C are green peppers, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and citrus juices. Raw and cooked leafy greens (turnip greens, spinach), red and green peppers, canned and fresh tomatoes, raspberries, blueberries, are also rich sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is sensitive to light, air, and heat, so you'll get the most vitamin C if you eat fruits and vegetables raw or lightly cooked.

No - sainsburys pate and Gauamole and coleslaw - coleslaw is 3.7g per 100g, and pate is 3.1g per 100g, not sure re gaucamole. (That's quire hard to type that word! Grin)

Not massive portions by any means - table spoon of pate, 1.5 of the g word and maybe 3 of coleslaw?

LackaDAILYcarb · 02/05/2012 15:38

I assume the whey protein shakes are gluten free?

I've been scoffing lots of green veg, so I doubt vit C is an issue for me. I already have to take a calcium and Vit D supplement on doctors orders and I also take cod liver oil/VitA supplemet to help my joints. I positively rattles, I does Grin

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 02/05/2012 15:51

helloooo, just checking in.

LittleFrieda · 02/05/2012 16:09

I don't smoke but I wish I did. Grin I'd love a fag to relieve the boredom.

I've been eating plenty of fresh veg. But I'll try and aim for more veg that is high in vit C.

I've had no lunch. Eeeek.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 02/05/2012 18:00

Anyone got any nice recipe ideas for stewing steak for tomorrow night? Normally I would have the carb fest that is meat and potato pie, probably not a good idea! Grin

Today: B Greek yoghurt with a little vanilla extract
L Omelette with bacon, mushrooms, and a tablespoon of chopped tomatoes
D Shepherds pie, ripped off from BIWIs recipe, but changed a little. The mince has mushrooms and leek in, and the mash is loads of swede, with a little carrot, as morrisons didn't have celeriac in. Never tried celeriac before either, quite interested to see what it is like.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 02/05/2012 18:01

Oh, and for a snack, tescos have started doing what look like cheese strings, wrapped in ham. By a company called 24, I think? Were quite nice anyway. Having green beans with dinner, not had them in years.

londonone · 02/05/2012 18:08

Annoyingly left my lunch at home today so had to try and buy something from waitrose. Almost impossible I tell you. Couldn't have anything in the lunch section, ended up buying some babybels and salami and some marinated tofu which was strangely delicious. Oh well lesson for next time, do not forget your lunch!

Thegoddessblossom · 02/05/2012 18:19

londonone it's really hard isn't it? I recently ended up spending about £15 on lunch by buying prawns, chicken, cheese etc in an M&S. Mind you I am a pig.... Grin

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 18:20

What - you had a whole supermarket (and a Waitrose!) and couldn't buy anything for your lunch?!

A bag of salad, some (naice) ham or roast turkey from the deli, some olives?

Evening all - had a real craving for pizza today so tried the flaxseed crust one linked to on the recipe thread - not entirely convinced but it's filled me up this evening. Currently 81.7kg - the lightest I've been all year! Want to lose at least 1.7kg before the end of the month as have posh family do to attend!

I feel like I've broken my sugar addiction completely - no cravings for haribo any more - although the thought of the solitary creme egg waiting for me is sometimes tricky. Anyway at the weekend I had my first taste of chocolate since the beginning of bootcamp - it was Lindt 85% cocoa - and it was minging - I was going to have two squares but couldn't face the whole of the first one. Progress no!

So today's menu

Big brunch of charcuterie/cheese/smoked salmon/ scrambled eggs/salad caprese and black coffee out with my girlfriends which lasted from 9-12.
No lunch as a result of above!
Supper - half a tuna/shallot/caper/olive flax pizza and a couple of spritzers.

Hopefully the 200g on yesterday will come back off tomorrow.

I have visitors for the next 5 days so could be interesting trying to cater for everyone!

doradoo · 02/05/2012 19:28

What do you think of this bread www.backbord.de/index3.html - it had 11.9g of carbs per 100g.

Do you think the odd slice of this would completely throw the diet out?

Sorry it's in German - but it's available at my local bakery and is being advertised as 'almost carb free'!

Badcat666 · 02/05/2012 19:30

Oh, for anyone still suffering from yucky colds and a chesty cough (come on bugs! It's May! Sod off and come back when it's winter) I found Robitussin sugarfree chesty cough medicine in Boots, been coughing for days and keeping me awake now so had to take something... nil carbs! Huzzah

Thegoddessblossom · 02/05/2012 20:15

Tea: pork belly, curly kale and leeks.

I have not eaten a piece of cake, a piece of chocolate, a piece of fruit, rice, bread of any kind, or potatoes for weeks. I feel quite liberated about that. Grin

(caveats it all quickly by saying I drink alcohol every day)

MrsNouveauRichards · 02/05/2012 20:24

Oh dear, just inhaled about 6 mini millionaires shortbread that didn't even taste that great. In my defence I have just spent 2 1/2hrs at the yard, jumped my little horse and then put all the jumps away and I am feeling decidedly wobbly! Waiting for my dinner to cook now.

I need to get back on track, have been a bit rubbish with breakfast lately, and the day just slides a bit from there.

Oh well, tomorrow is another day...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/05/2012 20:28

We weighing in tomorrow or leaving it and doing it weekly? Can't remember!

I have totally stalled. What lovely Shirl said earlier, I could have written, even down to the Captain Pugwash part. Am still on bootcamp and will stick with it, but really hoping to see some progress sooooon
