Hopefully you've signed in and weighed in for week 3. Welcome if you're new!

Many people have seen significant weight loss - Jacaqueen has lost a spectacular 13lbs. But you need to prepare yourself for the rate of loss to slow down significantly from now on. And bear in mind:

IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER IN WEEKS 3, 4 AND/OR 5.

I have put that in caps/bold because it can come as something of a shop to people when this happens. I don't know why it happens, but I know that it happens - it's happened to me, and I've read about it from many other low carbers.

Here's a piece about it from the Carblife website (well worth a visit if you want more info - but it's a much quieter site than MN)

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS
Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.
Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.
A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!
So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water... The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.
From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself ) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited. Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number).

So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occuring.

Well done Slowly, sounds like you have alot on your plate. If you'll excuse the pun.

Thanks Sharon -it was a divine tea actually can highly recommend. And very filling.

DH can't believe how much interest I take in what we are eating for tea these days - I usually leave it completely up to him, and never offer to cook, but do nowadays as I like to cook it all in butter!

SharonGless · 01/05/2012 22:03

Slowly, well done on saying no to all those carbs- willpower extraordinaire.
I am sorry to hear your news and hope the op date comes round quickly for you

slowlyburningcalories · 01/05/2012 22:11

Thanks all, I have found the nhs to be either stunningly efficient (from seeing GP to initia op date was ten days) or dangerously crap (brain damaging my DD due to birth error by doctor). I have a family holiday, an appraisal and a conference to enjoy before the op so will stay positive!

Badcat666 · 01/05/2012 22:27

oh slowly offers you a hug, I don't know how you resisted the evil noms, big gold star to you! :o everything will be ok, you'll see! sends happy bunny thoughts your way

BettyBathroom · 01/05/2012 22:50

Oh dear I feel I ate a lot of snacks today.

B - boiled egg & sliver of butter
L - Caprese Salad & Macadamia nuts
D - Low carb Gnocchi with tomato sauce and brocolli with EVOO

Snacks - more macadamia nuts, a slice of v decadent goats cheese and choc truffles - the double cream 70% cocoa solids type - but still it's not good.

And now a glass of red - I'm supposed to be maintaining Hmm

LackaDAILYcarb · 02/05/2012 07:43

Sorry to hear about your upcoming op slowly. I hope it comes round quickly. How old is your DD? Will not being able to feed her cause any supply problems?

sneaky peak at the scales showing 12.7 this morning. I am happy and finding it much easier to stick to this week. DS had some wine gums yesterday, and I pinched one, but didn't feel the need to inhale the packet as I usually do. Wine gums ate me all time favourite!
yesterday was:
B: scrambled egg with slices of naice ham
L: salmon in morrocan rub with spinach & courgettes
D: low carb cottage pie topped with celeriac and butternut squash mash with broccoli.
and one wine gum!

Have just bought a kindle and have downloaded the IPD cookery book, but the book itself says it's currently unavailable...

still smuggling to get the water in. especially when I'm working as I'm out driving and in and out of people's houses, and haven't got the strongest pelvic floor in the world Blush

I also need to start exercising more, and am starting this morning with a brisk walk after I've done the school run.

Onwards and downwards :)

happyhappymummy · 02/05/2012 09:29

Hello Iv been invited to join this thread :)
Just wondering if someone could give me a run down on it please?
Is it a thread to keep eachother motivated or are you all on a spacial diet?
I have about 3 stone to lose and lots of awful wobbly bits to tone!

ShirtyKnot · 02/05/2012 09:51

Hello all. Well, I've been sticking to it, even though I STILL had no weight loss. Shock

I've weighed this morning and a pound has finally been prised from my resistent stupid bastard body, but more importantly I have lost a couple of inches all over.

I've been reading IPD and following that really, so have been having the odd handful of nuts (yum) and REALLY enjoying some of the recipes.

I went to see a friend on Saturday and she's a fitness instructor - as soon as I got there she started banging on about me being really unhealthy to be following a LC diet and that because I do Body Pump or running or swimming most days that I MUST eat some potatoes!

I just said "yes, yes" while she drank 3 bottles of white wine and lectured me on the damage I'm doing my liver and kidneys. I stuck to drinking 2 x glasses of vodka and water and 1 x glass of white wine topped up with water and wondered about the upcoming hangover! Suffice it to say, I was pretty fresh the next morning whereas my friend was a stinking mess. Grin

ShirtyKnot · 02/05/2012 09:53

Whoops - Hope you're ok slowly and Sharon

flipflopflap · 02/05/2012 10:27

Had a little cheat yesterday and ate some salted popcorn. Blush Definitely getting back into the swing of things today though. No more cheats for me!

B: Soya yogurt, LC granola.
L: Savory cheesecake, salad, mayo
D: Veg curry and curried cauli.

SharonGless · 02/05/2012 10:31

Yeay Shirley's back! Well done on the inches, shows it is working. Have you read IPD about weeks 3,4 and 5 on water retention and- why you don't lose weight.which week are you on now?

Only grabbed couple slices of salami for breakfast as started wake up 7 AM this morning. Off to cafe now for quick coffee last Macaris MOT hoping there will be something yummy to eat.

ShirtyKnot · 02/05/2012 10:58

I'm on week 3 with you lot! I started on the Friday before the Bootcamp started though.

I've been reading EVERYTHING about why I haven't being losing! Grin. So frustrating to be in ketosis, eating the fat and veggies, exercising and sloshing around like some kind of character on Captain Pugwash...I think that it's a combination of things for me...I think that part of it was deffo the fat cells filling up with water in a panic, and part of it was the exercising I've been doing for the past 3 months FINALLY showing as muscle gain on the scales.

The thing about this WOE, for me at least, is that I feel brilliant! Sleeping better, TONS more energy, I'm happier. That's why I'm sticking with it even if the losses on the scales aren't spectacular, or even good - that's the only reason I've carried on though - I think if I'd been feeling shit and still not losing I would have given up.

MNP · 02/05/2012 11:10

Weirdly or maybe not so but had a bad eating day yesterday in that was so busy at home I didn't eat as wasn't hungry and only managed 2lts and slept badly last night.

Plans have changed so at home again today so just off to get breakfast.

MrsNouveauRichards · 02/05/2012 11:10

Well done Shirty for sticking with it. Did you feel a teeny bit smug for not having a hangover? :o

B - coffee
S - pint of water, mini Marmite cheese, coffee
L - scrambled egg, bacon and tomatoes
D - chicken stew with butternut squash

ShirtyKnot · 02/05/2012 11:58

Did I feel a teeny bit smug?

No, of course not!

I was HUGELY and ANNOYINGLY smug

MrsNouveauRichards · 02/05/2012 12:01

:o

MNP · 02/05/2012 12:03

:o Shirty

Welcome, happyhappymummy! If you go to the start of this thread you will find the Bootcamp rules. There are 10 rules - all you need to do is to follow those.

In addition, if low carbing is new to you (and I'm guessing it might be) then it is a really good idea to read up on it, so that you know what it's all about. A lot of it, initially, will seem very counter-intuitive - e.g. that you must eat fat! But unless you embrace it fully, then it won't work for you.

There are three key threads - this one, for chat, the weigh-in thread (next weigh in will be Sunday or Monday), and this one for some fab recipes to get you inspired

OP posts:
BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 12:22

Oh, and YAY to see you back, Shirl!!! Grin

I'm loving the idea of your 'fitness' instructor telling you what to do whilst behaving so badly!

A bit like my size 20 SIL, a qualified Weight Watchers leader, telling me that low carbing is a fad diet Hmm

OP posts:
BettyBathroom · 02/05/2012 12:52

Loving your friend Shirty Grin

Just bought a another new cookbook, this one, I think, was mentioned on another thread but I'm so impressed - food looks lovely (we have photos!), tasty and is written by a low carbing chef - a foodie - not a Doctor and it shows!

Low Carb Gourmet

I've bought a few duff books already - books that are uninspiring, too bloody preachy and too wanna be healthy in a totally unrealistic way and they books seemed to be aimed at people who have never cooked a meal in their lives.

Twit · 02/05/2012 12:56

Hi all, it's good to see you're still here!

I have switched to the lite version a little bit. I'm mainly bootcamp but with a couple of spoons of total yoghurt with a spoon of linseeds and 5/6 blue berries for my breakfast. I feel loads better now, my tummy feels happier and I can wear my old smaller bras (still 32 GG tho Shock ) Grin and look and feel slightly slimmer despite no change on the scales. I am wearing an old pair of jeans today and they're ok, not too tight although obviously a way to go before I can't wrap up on layers to hide the old bulges.
I haven't been as spot on with my water though so am making an improvement on that as we speak - although I STILL HAVEN'T CHEATED Wink

I'm happy that I have maintained the weightloss, am aiming to be in the 9's by the end of May, which is 5lbs i think so fingers crossed, unless The Almighty BIWI reckons that's a bit unrealistic of course

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 02/05/2012 13:03
Grin

Sounds like a plan to me ...
