BIWI's Bootcamp - Week 3 Weigh In - New Starters Welcome!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 29/04/2012 17:52

So our two weeks of Bootcamp seem to have gone well, with some spectacular losses. Between us I think we have lost enough to make 3 or 4 new MNetters!

It's up to you now how you want to proceed. If you have a lot of weight to lose, or you like the strictness of it, you can carry on with Bootcamp. New joiners should start with Bootcamp anyway.

If you are nearly at your target, or you were finding Bootcamp a bit too restrictive, then you can move to Bootcamp Light - or you could do a hybrid of the two, which is what I am doing - Bootcamp Monday to Thursday and Bootcamp Light Friday to Sunday (which means that you can include alcohol at the weekend!)

As a reminder, or for those who are new, these are the Bootcamp rules:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

And this is the allowed list of veg:

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8
Celery0.9

Or a protein shake if you can't stomach food. I sometimes blend mine with a little espresso and ice to make an iced coffee drink.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 30/04/2012 22:29

headstart - I have to say that your food looks OK. A couple of things - definitely stop the snacking, make sure you keep your fat levels, and possibly keep an eye on your portions.

You should probably be drinking more water.

Also, have

headstart - I have to say that your food looks OK. A couple of things - definitely stop the snacking, make sure you keep your fat levels, and possibly keep an eye on your portions.

You should probably be drinking more water. Here's some guidance from Carblife about how much you should be drinking:

Water.
Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be

Weight-----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

Also, have you taken your measurements?

Otherwise, I'd say just keep on keeping on ...

Thanks BiWi you're a star Smile

Will up water and take on rest of your advice

Onwards and upwards!!!

OliviaLMumsnet · 30/04/2012 22:34

bootcamp or bootcamp light?
Confused
goes back to read thread. Blush

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 30/04/2012 22:37

Bootcamp is where it all started, and is two quite strict weeks - the rules are at the start of the thread. Bootcamp Light is a little bit more relaxed - rules are also at the start of the thread!

OP posts:
OliviaLMumsnet · 30/04/2012 22:39

Blush at not having read the thread. I will be doing hybrid bootcamp
Esp tomorrow am where I will be having yog for break.

I will start my weigh in at an index of 100 as I do not have anonymity. Grin

OliviaLMumsnet · 30/04/2012 22:43

or does one have to start with hardcore shouty bootcamp? (are you as mean as the fish? she is one scary fish)

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 30/04/2012 23:04

Hi, can I join? I'm not sure how successful I'll be, but I want to try! Starting weight this morning was 10 3

Breakfast was boiled eggs mashed with butter
Lunch roast chicken from tesco deli, with steamed cabbage, leek and spring green mix
Dinner was bacon and mushrooms fried in butter, spinach, tinned tomatoes and a poached egg.

Most surprisingly of all, I've only had one cup of tea all day. That hasn't happened before! 2.5 litres of water down.

I need to keeo reading everyones recipes, I get so stuck for ideas! Any good cookbooks about?

prettybird · 30/04/2012 23:42

Weighing in at 12stone 4 lb. short term goal is to break the 12stone barrier, medium term goal is to break the 11stone barrier and long term to get back to 10 stone, which only 3 years ago was my "normal" weight.

At the moment stresses in my life mean that I'll be happy if I get to 11stone something within the next 2 weeks.

Lilyloo · 01/05/2012 06:45

Starting weight 9st10 week 1 lost 4lb, week 2 (ends Fri for me ) lost 2lb up to now

MrsNouveauRichards · 01/05/2012 07:00

Morning :)

Weighing in a day late, stayed the same so still 9.11 stone.

Goal is 9.7 or thereabouts.

charlie7 · 01/05/2012 07:35

Hi, can I join? Was following last week, so am on second week of Bootcamp. Started last week at 194 lbs, lost 6 lbs down to 188 lbs and I was overjoyed!
However, weighed this morning and I've put 3lbs back on- in just 3 days! I think its probably too much snacking on nuts as I just seem so hungry, need to stop that.
Also, can someone tell me, I have started having a small amount of soya milk in tea as I can't stomach anymore herbal teas, is this ok?
This thread is great!

FauxFox · 01/05/2012 07:41

Back in the game - didn't feel that hungry yesterday (probably due to being still full from carb-fest weekend!) I ate 50g brazil nuts, some cold chicken and a chicken and avocado salad and one square of dark choc for dinner.

I'll try to have better 'meals' today, and up the water - thanks for the reminder BIWI Smile

DoUntoOtters · 01/05/2012 08:24

Gah. I feel slimmer. I think I look slimmer. I've been very good and not cheated. I HAVE PUT ON 2LBS. How? From where?

Fava · 01/05/2012 08:53

BIWI- I could only read the paper you posted up to page 9 and my science is somewhat rusty...here's my take. :)
This paper review examines the interaction of different aspects of metabolism. As per normal, the story of carbohydrate (insulin driven) and fat metabolism (lack of insulin) is more complicated than we expect. The first diagram is a summary of the outcome of a Lower Carb/Higher Saturated Fat diet. It shows the different pathways involved and the resulting Lower levels of fructose, glucose, insulin, fat production and ultimately lower bad cholesterol (or at least its precursor). The review also looks at the different types of cholesterol, Triglycerides(TG) and other lipids to finds that a LC diet is more effective at reducing both the TGs and the bad-bad cholesterol (the stickier, denser LDL, rather than the fluffier one) and at increasing the good cholesterol. Thus, potentially, resulting in a positive outcome for people with Metabolic Syndrome. Also, a lower carb/higher fat diet appears to have a positive outcome for both Diabetics and people with abnormal fat (lipids) in their blood ?including people with Atherogenic (of genetic origin) Dyslipidemia (abnormal fat metabolism).
I hope this answer some of your questions.

WillieWaggledagger · 01/05/2012 08:57

otters - have you measured with a tape measure?

Bravo charlie and welcome

I had leftover pizza quiche for lunch yesterday. i told dp yesterday that I'd had eggs and bacon for breakfast, pizza and salad for lunch, and chicken in a creamy leek and mushroom sauce for supper and he laughed that this was a diet

then we went to the cinema and saw 'the kid with the bike' (which is fab and I cried) and though i usually have wine (we have posh independent cinema just down the road) i had sparkling mineral water

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 09:18

Wow! Welcome everyone!

Olivia.* I am a bit shouty on occasion. I am especially ranty when Mumsnet goes down when I'm in the middle of a post . And don't think that your Official Status will win you any favours. Oh no.

*DoUntoOtters - have you taken your measurements as well as just weighing? That is more accurate, really, than a piece of mechanical plastic! Don't despair. If you've really been good and not cheated, then you probably are slimmer. Just make sure you're not suffering from 'carb creep' and allowing more carbs into your diet than you think!

charlie7 - if you're hungry, that's a sign that you're not in ketosis, so you're not eating a low-enough level of carbs. Go back to the Bootcamp rules and make sure you're really following those to the letter. Stop the snacking, for sure. That said, if you are hungry, this WOE (way of eating) is not about deprivation. If you are hungry eat! Just make sure that you have good choices to hand - a hard boiled egg, a piece of (good/naice) ham, a small piece of cheese.

Fava - thanks - I thought that was what it was saying!

I'm a little concerned about KeepOrf/GetOrf, who is the official Spreadsheet Meister. She hasn't been very well Sad, and hasn't been posting for a couple of days - anyone seen her?

If you're reading this, hope you're OK, and get well soon.

OP posts:
ohforfoxsake · 01/05/2012 09:31

Not seen Getorf sorry. Hope she is ok Sad

Feeling like a big fat lard-arse today. A pound on and pissed off. Suspect smoked mackerel and gammon causing water retention. Hope so anyway. Feel shite about it. Seems 2 pounds on since my best weight and I thought I had stuck to it.
Not going to throw the towel in. Am going to kick a chair now. Angry

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 09:34

Don't worry, ohforfoxsake - cut out the smoked stuff, replace with fresh/pure meat/fish and keep on keeping on (as well as drinking the water!)

Have you measured as well as weighed?

I know exactly how you feel, but you are too much 'in the moment' - step back and look at your progress overall to get a better sense of perspective.

OP posts:
PostBellumBugsy · 01/05/2012 09:46

Not seen GetOrf either BIWI. I asked about her kidneys a few days ago. Fingers crossed she is ok and is just busy at work.

ohforfoxsake · 01/05/2012 09:47

Thanks BIWI Smile I think when you have a big loss it's really disheartening to slow down to a snails pace, or even put on, but i know i'm not being realistic too.

Still, not giving up. Onwards and downwards.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 09:51

I know. I have been there, got the t-shirt!

I have found, because I keep a spreadsheet/chart of my weight loss, that often a sudden drop can mean that the scales bounce back up for a few days - it's almost as if my body can't believe that it's let that much fat go, and has to 'retrench' for a few days, before then dropping back to the lower weight.

I have no idea why, but it's happened to me at least 3 times since Feb - and it's why I'm not getting back on to the scales (despite having been a daily weigher for most of this time) until next Sunday! I can't bear to see the scales start with a '10' again, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do at the moment, until my weight settles back down again.

It does mean that you really have to keep your mind focused on the end result and not obsess too much about the here-and-now.

I bought Biffas book but haven't finished yet - anyone tell me is there a number of grams of carbs we should be aiming below?
HAve just realised my yog was rather high (not a good start but nothing eggy/quick in the house and today was prob not the best day to start as DS2 unwell)

India knight had a fab home made sausage and egg mcMuffin recipe which I may make to quickly eat in the am.
