BIWI's Bootcamp - Week 3 Weigh In - New Starters Welcome!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 29/04/2012 17:52

So our two weeks of Bootcamp seem to have gone well, with some spectacular losses. Between us I think we have lost enough to make 3 or 4 new MNetters!

It's up to you now how you want to proceed. If you have a lot of weight to lose, or you like the strictness of it, you can carry on with Bootcamp. New joiners should start with Bootcamp anyway.

If you are nearly at your target, or you were finding Bootcamp a bit too restrictive, then you can move to Bootcamp Light - or you could do a hybrid of the two, which is what I am doing - Bootcamp Monday to Thursday and Bootcamp Light Friday to Sunday (which means that you can include alcohol at the weekend!)

As a reminder, or for those who are new, these are the Bootcamp rules:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

And this is the allowed list of veg:

Don?t eat any veg unless it?s on this list, and try and focus on eating those that are under 3g carbs per 100g:

Veg (raw)Carbs per 100g
Mushrooms0.4
Watercress0.4
Spinach0.8

Olivia, there is different advice on how low to go! I have to stick with less than 30g of carbs a day, otherwise I won't lose. Others are able to take a more flexible approach & don't measure their carbs at all, but just follow all the guidelines that BIWI has given or that you'll find in IPD.
If you are going to eat yoghurt, then go for the full fat greek variety, as this is the lowest in carbs.
If you are completely new to this way of eating, I think it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the amount of carbs in different types of food, so you don't slip up.

OliviaLMumsnet · 01/05/2012 10:13

As I said, I have done before, but pre-DC when everything was easier and I wasnt replacing sleep with food in the same way I do now.

I would def say it is the most successful WOE - I didn't even miss roast pots after a while.

Did cauliflower mash and all sorts.
Today is prob not the best day to start given I have not much low carb stuff in
However, I have 6 weeks until a black tie event at which I want to be a good few pounds lighter so am reckoning that every little helps...

PostBellumBugsy · 01/05/2012 10:19

Sorry, I missed that you have done it before. In that case, if you want a figure to aim for, you can work out roughly how many carbs you can eat each day & still lose. My ancient & much abused body won't lose on more than 30g!
If you are sleep deprived, then just go with BIWI's fantastic guidelines & don't worry too much about the numbers. If you stick to the rules - losing weight is inevitable! Grin

FreeButtonBee · 01/05/2012 10:21

Right, 1lb down this morning, which is good. Still fat obviously but moving in the right direction.

Think I am a Bootcamp Lite person as I need to have yoghurt in my life or I will go insane.

Did a great thing with broccoli yesterday night. Chop into quite small florets (not too much stalk), heat up a frying pan really hot with some oil in it (just enough to coat the bottom). Put raw broc in pan and turn down heat to medium, turn over as the broc browns - you want it a mixture of light and darker brown - don't let it burn! You might need a bit more olive oil. This is really delicious - I did it with a brocolli head that was a bit floppy and sad and it was really great. Would be fab in a salad with feta and olives and stuff. But was great as a side dish with beef stew. Will add to the recipe thread.

Today:

B: small pot full fat plain yog (must get some Total though as it has a big carb saving over my current Yeo Valley)
L: not sure yet but not difficult to find something round here, prob big salad with protein of some sort.
D: roast salmon fillet, and either stir fry veg or a big salad. Will depend on what I have for lunch, I think!

Snacks: I am not a massive snacker, thank god, but will prob go for some ham or roast chicken if needed.

heartstart · 01/05/2012 11:11

OK have re-read all the info I have and got advice from BiWi am now a woman with a mission. Am going to measure carbs for a few days to get used to amounts

This am one cup of tea, school run 2.5 mile walk, home went to loo (a lot) had put on 1lb!! I know I know re weighing twice in 2 hours but..

Anyway had 2 eggs scrambled with cream and mushrooms in butter. On 2nd litre of water................

heartstart · 01/05/2012 11:12

meant to say BiWi ( and Olivia) I would love a Briffa chat

vnmum · 01/05/2012 11:19

Is everyone posting on here as the chat thread aswell? I posted on the other thread first then saw everyone on here. Thought you had all run off and left me Grin

NotMostPeople · 01/05/2012 11:19

I'm loving protein shake for breakfast as I was moaning about too many egg/bacon type breakfasts. I bought a huge tub of the stuff it has 2g carbs once made up so not too bad and keeps me full until lunchtime. Have a look in the supermarkets, I bought mine from Tesco.

londonlottie · 01/05/2012 11:20

I'd love a Briffa chat too :)

BIWI - I have fallen a bit by the wayside over the past few days although a weigh-in this morning still reveals a 2lb loss since weighing in for the first time last Monday. What do I do now - help!? Am I too late for yesterday's weigh in? Finding things tough at the moment due to a sudden reappearance of sleep deprivation with twins waking every hour in the night. Barely know what day it is today... Confused

ToryLovell · 01/05/2012 11:35

NotMostPeople -please can I ask the name of the protein shake you're using?

I've tried Holland and Barrett whey powder but it is not pleasant

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 12:00

Olivia (and anyone else who is interested) - I have made a spreadsheet that takes all the veg on the allowed list and will work out for you how many carbs you are using if you're cooking with those veg. All you do is enter the weight you're using and it will work it out. If you want a copy of it, send me a PM with your e-mail address.

vnmum - this is the latest chat thread. Sorry - I should have made it clear in the title (and apologies to MNHQ for wasting space on MN with so many threads now! Blush)

londonlottie - KeepOrf isn't around to do the spreadsheet at the moment, so just keep entering your weight here as and when you want to - we'll probably try and collate everything at the end of the week (i.e. Sunday)

And I can quite understand that you might be a tad bit disoriented, with twins! Don't stress too much about it - but please make sure you are eating well.

Get0rfMoiLand · 01/05/2012 12:13

Hello you lovely lot.

I am sorry I haven't been around - I have not been very well again so haven't been on here for a few days. I am OK now though (but going back to hospital and think I will need more drugs (man))

Well done everyone for your losses - FEAR NOT Grin I will do the spreadsheet this afternoon.

IMPRESSED at BIWI being diet guru to MNHQ. Grin Olivia - watch it, if you start eating quavers or jaffa cakes SHE WILL SHOUT.

Moggiemad · 01/05/2012 12:26

Hello everybody
Im a retired nurse and I have a Masters degree in medical science, so the article BIWI posted the link to interested me - I agree it reads like its written in Russian but a lot of it is medico-scientific speak. The gist is that low carb diets seem to be an influencing factor in reducing cardiovascular disease and also syndrome x (metabolic syndrome). Zoe Harcombe says much the same in "The Obesity Epidemic". We have not yet evolved sufficiently to the diet now most prevalent in the developed world, and bad eating habits have been exported to underdeveloped countries too. Low carbing is the way to go IMHO.

PostBellumBugsy · 01/05/2012 12:32

Good to see you GetOrf & glad that your humour is intact - even if your body is giving you jip!

Moggie - if you like the medical side of it all, you should read Taubes huge tome, The Diet Dellusion. It is packed full with medical reasons for eating low carb, loads of research etc. He writes well, so although it is humungous, it is still a good read.

OliviaLMumsnet · 01/05/2012 12:36

GetOrf - thought I needed some accountability, innit? Get well soon
and Biwi please do mail me spread sheet, pls.

Moggiemad · 01/05/2012 12:37

Thanks PostBellumBugsy. I have promised myself many times never to buy another diet book but I was impressed by Zoe Harcombe as it is so thoroughly researched. Having done research myself, and taught it, I do appreciate both the strengths and weaknesses of it. I will certainly have a look at Tabues, hes quoted extensively in Zoe Harcombe. This thread is a great help and inspiration - thank to you all and Im sticking with this. I have 30 pounds to lose.

MrsNouveauRichards · 01/05/2012 12:41

Funny, I an very interested in equine (horse) nutrition and have changed my horses onto a very natural diet but still feed myself shite Hmm

B - porridge with flaxseed
S - popcorn Blush
L - ham salad and a miniature cheese
D (will be) fried chicken in spicy coating with homemade coleslaw and a small corn on the cob, some veg or salad.

MrsNouveauRichards · 01/05/2012 12:43

Bugger, wrong bloody thread! :o

mummyduff · 01/05/2012 12:55

Afternoon all,

So glad to see you back GetOrf and feeling a little betterSmile

I missed breakfast today as had to take DS1 to see consultant, but then went to the gym came home and had 2 rashers of bacon, mushrooms and egg all cooked in lovely butter.
3 litres of water down so far today and still thirsty.

Not sure what Im doing for dinner but maybe stirfry.

NotMostPeople · 01/05/2012 14:13

Tory the one I have is Sci-mix whey protein for diet and body toning chocolate flavour. It's in a ginormous tub by all the body building stuff in Tesco and was £20 something. I've been making it with milk although you can apparently just mix it with water. I hate milk but actually quite like this stuff which is just as well as its not cheap. I know we're not supposed to be having too much dairy but this is the only milk I'm drinking and it's stopping me eating toast.

Getorf glad to see you feeling better and looking forward to the spreadsheet.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 01/05/2012 14:30

GetOrf - hurrah to see you posting. I was concerned - and Angry Sad that you have to go back to hospital.

Thank you MoggieMad - glad to see we have someone who speaks science on the thread!

I've ordered both Taubes books, but they are taking a very long time to get to me from Amazon for some reason.

I am sorry for the shitty formatting - I tried to cut corners time wise and ended up with 8 million random fucking commas. Grin If I took them out the format was unreadable on MN so left 'em in.
