So we have survived week one, more or less intact Grin

There has been a lot of cheating along the way - either intentional or accidental - but most people seem to be getting on with it and embracing low carbing. And we have seen some spectacular results already!

As one of the cheaters, I can tell you what you will already have discovered for yourself:

This way of eating (WOE) is an unforgiving one. If you slip up or cheat, it will show up on the scales

I know it's hard. I drank wine on both Friday and Saturday night. But it really is up to you how strict you choose to be - and therefore hopefully you will understand that it is up to you how much weight you are losing.

I realise this sounds patronising. But it's the ultimate truth of this (or any) diet.

Having said all that, I also know that there are some people who are struggling, and for whom weight loss has been very slow.

Just remember, if you have less weight to lose, then your rate of loss will be slower than those who have more to lose. And any loss, even if it's only a pound or so, is still a loss. Visualisation is always helpful for me if I think I've only lost a pound this week. Remember, a pound loss is like two packets of lard! That's a lot of fat.

And if weight loss is slow, or you're not seeing the scales move, have a long look at what you have been eating and drinking, and be really honest with yourself. Have you been following the rules? Have you been allowing carby things into your diet? Have you being drinking enough water? Try keeping a food diary so you can record everything (and I mean everything) that you're eating and drinking, as this can help you identify what might be affecting your progress.

If you still can't work out why it's happening (or not happening!), post what you've been eating and drinking here, and others might be able to help and advise you.

Anyway. Lecture over! Welcome to Week 2. Hopefully you will all see significant loss this week as well. But those of you who have lost loads in week 1 - don't expect to see the same kind of loss in this week - it's inevitable that it will slow down. Remember that sustainable, long term weight loss is around 1-2lbs per week.

And those of you who are struggling, hopefully another strict week will get things going for you! And I also hope that everyone has got through their carb withdrawals by now, and you are all feeling fantastic!

Onwards and downwards ... Grin

I have come by to confess that I have bought two Atkins shakes and two Atkins choc bars. I know that in the original post at the beginning of bootcamp you said no Atkins bars, but..... I'm getting weak. I ate a choc mini egg yesterday (not a massive cream egg a little one). It's Friday and I'm worried that I'm going to fall massively off the rails.

So I thought if I ate an Atkins bar it would feel like a treat but not be toooo bad. It's 2g of carbs.

Marabou · 27/04/2012 15:12

Right yes, I'll come clean too: I had (not one but) two Atkins bars on Wednesday hangs head in shameBlush.. Had major cravings and that seemed to be the only thing keeping me away from the jar of Nutella in the cupboard (will have to remember to yell at DH for buying that..)!

Is this the culprit behind the +1.2kgs in two days?? It's only 4g carbs in total.. Well, have no more atkins bars and no access to buy more either, as only have Asda close to home and they don't sell them.. Back to my glass of water for now..

Marabou · 27/04/2012 15:14

Of course there's always Ebay and Amazon: pack of five advantage bars for £9.95.. Someone please stop me!!

Jacaqueen · 27/04/2012 15:32

The Atkins bars could well be to blame. Sure they only have a few grams of carbs but they are full of crap. When eating that kind of thing I always look at the total carbs including the polyols as these can still have an effect on your blood sugar and cause an insulin response just like real carbs. At least they do with me.

NOW ONTO THE GOOD NEWS ohforfoxsake most spirits are carb free. Wine has a few carbs per serving, but be careful of the artificial sweetner in the mixer. Best to stick to soda or just have it on the rocks.

ANTagony · 27/04/2012 15:38

It's that scales addiction that's causing the problem. In an ideal world we'd weigh ourselves one daya month at the same time. Having decided no more than twice a week, mornings have crept in and then without thinking I hopped on last night.

If I left it to even once a week the results would be good.

Isn't very high coco solids chocolate lowish in carbs?

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 27/04/2012 15:38

THE WHOLE POINT OF BEING STRICT IN BOOTCAMP IS TO RID YOU OF YOUR ADDICTION TO SWEET THINGS

Buying stuff like Atkins bars, quite apart from all the crap that they contain, defeats the whole purpose of Bootcamp.

And they can stop weight loss.

Seriously folks. The rules are there for a reason, not just for you to ignore!

KeepOrf, I know exactly how you feel. This is what has sabotaged my every attempt to restart low-carbing since I gave up bfing DD (6.5 years ago now...). I'll lose a bit, then go 'whahey!' and have a bag of crisps. Stupid.

I'm determined not to do that again, and I'm relying on this thread to keep me going.

Ta for the tip re. Potassium, BIWI, I popped a multivit last night and it could be the placebo effect but my legs havne't been half so achey today. All my avocados seem to have gone black at the same time, the bastards...

Jacaqueen · 27/04/2012 15:50

Please Miss I have been a good girl and not had any artificial sweetner since the start of bootcamp. Not even sugar free gum or mints!

However I can confirm that Lindt 99% has 4g carbs per 50g bar. A 50g bar has 21 little thin squares. Just 2 or 3 of these little beauties is more than enough for a chocolate hit.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 27/04/2012 15:56

Jacaqueen Grin

But you have had sugar! Which is also against the rules!

Shock

Are you trying to say my arse is big?

OP posts:
ohforfoxsake · 27/04/2012 16:20

I have two squares of Green & Blacks Maya Gold with a cup of chamomile tea in the evening.

If you make me sit on the naughty step for that I'll tell my mum

vnmum · 27/04/2012 16:37

wizzy Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. 20 mins of hell a day. quick and effective. all you need are some dumbells and maybe an exercise mat. I like it because it is reasonably easy to fit that amount of time around children.

vnmum · 27/04/2012 16:41

I didn't know Lindt did a 99% choc. I've eaten seen the 90% one before. Hotel chocolate do a 100% cocoa bar but it is tres expensive, I am certainly not willing to pay that price on a cheat. Have to say, when I want chocolate, it isn't milk choc I go looking for, it is 85% or higher. Just don't fancy the sweetness of milk anymore.

I am very hungry and snacky today. Thinking it could be due to the exercise this morning. I've read on some LC sites that the likes of Briffa et al, say not to worry about exercise too much as it just makes you hungrier and crave carbs. They may be right but I'd rather tone up and do it for health and manage the hunger by eating allowed foods

Fava · 27/04/2012 17:06

All this talking about chocolate...
A question pops to mind (OT to bootcamp) for BIWI (or any other knowledgeable person).

What are your thoughts on xylitol as a sugar substitute?

Would love to try xylitol chocolate, although so far only found 72% choc.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 27/04/2012 17:10

I know little about it - other than it can also have a laxative effect.

But as I said above, not really a good idea for Bootcamp ...

mummyduff · 27/04/2012 17:14

Eve all, just wondering if I can resist the temptation of a glass of wine tonight after a truly rubbish week!

However been good today so far:
Breakfast was boiled egg
Lunch was Prawn salad
Dinner???? still trying to decide.

wizzy I also do shred sometimes if I cant get to the gym, its fab really bloody hard

LittleFrieda · 27/04/2012 17:17

vnmum - thanks, I thought he was just being a man. But today I walked down and up two flights of stairs at lunch time and my legs were shaking. I was jiggered. Am home now and feeling so tired.

This is probably all normal.

You are all doing so well. I've spent much of today wondering what nibbles I can make when people come for drinks (sparkling water for me). And I've come up with squares of roquefort wrapped in parma ham, mozzarella balls wrapped in streaky bacon, and parmesan crackers. I suppose we could also do carrot and celery crudites with a sour cream dip or chilli mayonnaise dip.

I'm really missing fruit.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 27/04/2012 17:18

Hang on, LF, there are some brilliant ideas in the Idiot Proof Diet recipe book - will go and get it ...

OP posts:
LittleFrieda · 27/04/2012 17:22

breakfast - bacon, 2 eggs, musrooms and tomatoes.
lunch - salad made with watercress, purple-sprouting broccoli al dente, a handful of tomatoes and shavings of parmesan (dressed with olive oil and shopped basil and parsley)
dinner - thinking

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 27/04/2012 17:23

There's also low carb 'devils on horseback' - wrap streaky bacon around waterchestnuts, and bake in the oven

Or cherry tomatoes on a cocktail stick with a cube of mozzarella - I dip the mozzarella in pesto and sandwich it top and bottom with half a cherry tomato.

Slices of cucumber, sandwiched together with pate

From the IPD recipe book:

Aubergine wraps

makes 24

2 long, slender aubergines, cut into rounds
200g Feta, cut into 24 cubes
24 small, fresh mint leaves
oil for frying

  1. Fry the aubergine slices until golden on each side
  2. Wrap each slice round a cube of Feta and a mint leaf and secure with a cocktail stick

LF they sound delish.

have got my skinny jeans on today, and am not even feeling the need to cover up with a long jumper - something must be working!

Food today:

  • protein shake first thing (7am-ish)
  • then 'coffee' with a mate that turned into sausage, egg, bacon, mushrooms... and an americano with cream Grin
  • celery stick with smoked mackerel pate
  • dinner will be calamari, chicken, leek gratin courtesy of Waitrose £10 offer

have drunk 3l of water so far. Yesterday I realised how much difference the water makes. I'd not had a chance to drink anymore than a couple of glasses and by 4pm I was asleep on the sofa! when I woke up I had a litre immediately and felt SO much better - it was weird. I know it's only anecdotal but I couldn't believe the difference not drinking had made. I felt crap - but that's how I used to feel All The Time...

teaandthorazine · 27/04/2012 17:33

hmmm, looking at my last post I reckon I need some more veg - will add some buttered asparagus and spinach to dinner tonight!

Creamtea1 · 27/04/2012 17:54

Protein shake samples arrived today - strawberry, choc, mint choc and nut choc. Going to give them a go next week.
Did another weigh today and am .13 kg off 10 st 3! Will be well impressed if I get there by mon as that's 4 lb in 2 weeks.
Dinner is prawn and paneer curry (home made)
