So we have survived week one, more or less intact Grin

There has been a lot of cheating along the way - either intentional or accidental - but most people seem to be getting on with it and embracing low carbing. And we have seen some spectacular results already!

As one of the cheaters, I can tell you what you will already have discovered for yourself:

This way of eating (WOE) is an unforgiving one. If you slip up or cheat, it will show up on the scales

I know it's hard. I drank wine on both Friday and Saturday night. But it really is up to you how strict you choose to be - and therefore hopefully you will understand that it is up to you how much weight you are losing.

I realise this sounds patronising. But it's the ultimate truth of this (or any) diet.

Having said all that, I also know that there are some people who are struggling, and for whom weight loss has been very slow.

Just remember, if you have less weight to lose, then your rate of loss will be slower than those who have more to lose. And any loss, even if it's only a pound or so, is still a loss. Visualisation is always helpful for me if I think I've only lost a pound this week. Remember, a pound loss is like two packets of lard! That's a lot of fat.

And if weight loss is slow, or you're not seeing the scales move, have a long look at what you have been eating and drinking, and be really honest with yourself. Have you been following the rules? Have you been allowing carby things into your diet? Have you being drinking enough water? Try keeping a food diary so you can record everything (and I mean everything) that you're eating and drinking, as this can help you identify what might be affecting your progress.

If you still can't work out why it's happening (or not happening!), post what you've been eating and drinking here, and others might be able to help and advise you.

Anyway. Lecture over! Welcome to Week 2. Hopefully you will all see significant loss this week as well. But those of you who have lost loads in week 1 - don't expect to see the same kind of loss in this week - it's inevitable that it will slow down. Remember that sustainable, long term weight loss is around 1-2lbs per week.

And those of you who are struggling, hopefully another strict week will get things going for you! And I also hope that everyone has got through their carb withdrawals by now, and you are all feeling fantastic!

Onwards and downwards ... Grin

Good article MNP. Thanks. Just skim-read it as I am very late going to bed, but it looks like I shouldn't be concerned that fat now seems to be about 60-70% of my diet. Will come back to it tomorrow.

mummyduff · 25/04/2012 06:44

Morning all,

couldn't sleep, feeling really bloated and no more weight loss since Monday Sad

I am drinking so much water, going to the gym, eating lots of protein and fat, but prob not enough veg/salad, can that really stop you loosing weight?

I will increase the veg/salad intake today.

Off to the gym 1st thing and then shopping to stock up on some more food, have a good day everybody Smile

teaandthorazine · 25/04/2012 07:09

Morning losers!

Am just listening to r4 which us saying that the no of people with diabetes is likely to rise to 6million and currently costs the NHS £17billion... Is it too much wishful thinking to wonder how far those figures would drop if more people followed this WOE?

Anyway... Haven't weighed this morning because I still feel rather heavy after last night's indulgences! Still feel as if I really don't need to eat today... have had a protein shake, vits and half a litre of water.

Have a good day, all!

FauxFox · 25/04/2012 07:24

Quick one for me - busy day!
Yesters was OK, snacks were handful of almonds and dinner changed to smoked chicken and avocado salad with celariac chips.

Today:
B: Bacon and cuc
L: Stirfried veg and tofu
D: Trout and green veg
and I must keep up with the water!

WillieWaggledagger · 25/04/2012 07:41

well i was a bloody SAINT last night

went to work quiz&chips. thought would be fish and chips and could eat the fish without the batter, knowing it would likely be a large fish portion. oh no it was chicken burger and chips (or veggie burger - obv no go). so I sat there with a huge portion of chips and chicken in a crispy coating and a burger bun and I scraped off the crispy coating and ate nothing but the chicken inside. it wasn't very nice but I was hungry and it really was the only thing available that i could eat. i'm sure colleagues thought I was crackers but no one commented

I also only drank sparkling mineral water (easy because I had 1hr 15mins drive home)

I'm having roast duck breast for supper tonight to make up for it

at least we won the fucking quiz

WillieWaggledagger · 25/04/2012 07:43

tea, i am increasingly coming to the conclusion that sugar is EVIL

BettyBathroom · 25/04/2012 07:50

teaandthorazine I wonder if part of the reason why the change in dietary advice isn't coming about due to the difficulties in managing a massive dietary turn around in mass population. The current food chain is set up to provide masses of carbs....how would it cope with providing masses of fat & protein.

What would be the short & long term environmental and economic impact of a mass change in dietary direction - balanced against the cost of obesity....it must be a debate someone is having among the powers that be.

This morning I have lost another 1lb.

Kids are now enjoying brown rice, brown pasta and wholemeal bread - the conversion to whole food has been much easier than I expected. Am going to buy a countertop ice cream machine soon too (I love kitchen gadgets!), that way I can provide healthier carby treats. Homemade ice cream is so much better tasting than even the "best" shop bought stuff!

vnmum · 25/04/2012 07:51

tea I just wish more mainstream nutritionists would realise this WOE is scientifically proven etc instead of peddling low fat, low cal crap. Even the trainers on the biggest loser peddle the low fat calorie counting stuff although they do advocate lower carbs and low GI too, but still, they are dealing with very obese people with diabetes or pre diabetes etc who could probably benefit alot from this WOE.

Well I appear to have lost 1 of the pounds I gained yesterday, Yay!, despite having berries and whipped cream and some dark chocolate as a cheat (well it was much better than the cream cakes and cookies I had bought to eat but ended up not being able to). I did have a bite of one of the cookies, just to see how it tasted in comparison to how I remembered them tasting, and it tasted horrible. I couldn't even taste any cookie taste, it just tasted like I was eating a spoonful of pure sugar, bleurgh, way too sweet. I ate my berries and cream after the cookie taste and it tasted so nice and just what I felt I needed. strange, but in a good way.

Protein shake for breakfast today, and off to the gym after school run

ilovemyteddy · 25/04/2012 07:54

Pst! Don't tell Shirley cos we said we wouldn't weigh ourselves again until Friday, but I've lost another 1lb. And am officially no longer obese. Woohoo!!

Thegoddessblossom · 25/04/2012 08:02

well I seem to have gained 2 pounds. Very annoying. Partic as my "cheats" are only ever low carb berries. And red wine.

Oh well, as we are all saying, prefer this WOE and the food I am eating regardess of weight (but would prefer to just stay at target which is what I was).

So lunch - stupidly bought 3 for £10 salmon steaks not realising that they were ready to eat steamed fish. Promptly stuck them in freezer, then defrosted overnight. DH says chuck 'em, I want to eat some for lunch. Would you? they say "not suitable for home freezing" on them......

Off to breave school run in this atrocious weather, then for a coached swim.

Raspberries, greek yog and single cream for brekkie.

vnmum · 25/04/2012 08:05

I know goddess, this weather is awful and it seems it will be with us for next week too. April showers and all that Hmm

mummyduff · 25/04/2012 08:17

well done ilovemyteddy

I am now just about to brave the weather for the 1st school/pre school run of the day, its so cold & wet its like the middle oh winter Sad

Jacaqueen · 25/04/2012 08:36

Good Morning everyone.

The weather is terrible here this morning too. DS2 is not at school today as he is rather unwell. I had to get upto him in the night and I felt really lightheaded so had to have a drink of fruit juice as I thought I was about to pass out. No idea if it was low blood sugar, jumping out of bed too quickly or the nasty virus that DS has.

I feel not too bad this morning and thankfully I have lost another pound. That makes 10lbs in 9 days. Not sure what the food plans are for today yet.

FiddleDeFat · 25/04/2012 08:47

Morning. Well done ilovemyteddy. I've got half a stone to lose yet before I hit that milestone. Must be a good feeling.

doradoo · 25/04/2012 08:48

Morning all - bounced back up on the scales again this morning - so my overall loss is a measly 300g. And felt like I'd had a really good day food wise yesterday - no snacks but the I think my half bottle of wine was the scupper yesterday night.

Am, as others have said, enjoying the WOE but not best impressed at the lack of movement on the scales.

Yesterday was:
B - 2 fried eggs, half fried tomato, 2 rashers streaky bacon
L - prawn chop suey stir fry with soya sauce
D - Moussaka and salad (and half bottle red)

Today:
B - one boiled egg, wafer thin turkey breast
L - possibly something with Tuna
D - Roast chicken, celeriac something and veggies..

Drinking lots of water and my only snack was almonds (less than 50g a day)
So any ideas why the weight is not coming off - it's not like I don't have lots to lose - at least 15kg

Help......

londonlottie · 25/04/2012 08:52

Morning all. What a wet grey day. Am down this morning, seem to have lost 3.25lb since starting on Monday. Not going to question it!

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 25/04/2012 09:08

Morning all!

livelong - sorry you're not feeling great. I'm not really sure why you would be feeling nauseous - hope you're feeling better today. Not sure why a mushroom omlette would make you feel that way.

That's a great article, MNP. Yudkin is a very early 'pioneer' of low carbing. He wrote a brilliant book about sugar and its evils way back in the 70s which I think is out of print. Incidentally, it's perhaps no surprise that the Government isn't trying to push a low carb diet when you think about the big businesses that are involved and invested in making high sugar, high carbohydrate foods - if you think about it, the low carbohydrate foods that this WOE is focused on tends to be stuff that you can't slap a brand name on - fresh meat, fresh fish, fresh veg, etc. Whereas cereals - Nestle, sugar - Coca Cola/Pepsico - you get my drift ...

Dr Briffa's advice is along the lines of "if it has a brand name on it, be wary of it and what it might contain"

mummyduff - yes, veg/salad is important, that is why I keep telling you about it! And if you read the article that MNP linked to, you will see that it's fat that you should be focusing on, more than protein.

Thegoddess - yes, if you are constantly eating berries and drinking red wine then you will not lose weight and risk gaining weight. And I note you're having berries for breakfast again ...

WilliWaggler - well done. I know sometimes that this WOE leads to apparently mad behaviour in an effort to avoid carbs, but sometimes there's no alternative!

vnmum - well done! Just be aware that one of the perils of daily weighing is the fact that your weight does fluctuate quite naturally - so there will be days when you weight goes up without any apparent reason. But glad that the scales have been kind to you this morning.

Jacaqueen - sorry you're not feeling too good, and I hope you're not going down with something. But please - avoid the fruit juice. TBH it's probably the worst thing that you could have done - you will have sent a massive spike of sugar into your blood stream. But very glad to hear that your weight is still heading downwards! Smile

I keep forgetting to post my own meals. Yesterday was:

B - Total full-fat yoghurt, prior to 6.45am gym session (no time/inclination to cook/eat eggs at that time in the morning!)
late morning - 2 roasted belly pork slices
L - out for lovely lunch with ex-colleagues. Roasted provencale vegetable terrine, with pesto, Feta and balsamic (not much balsamic, so hopefully not too damaging!), followed by slow roast belly pork with chorizo, crackling, fennel choucroute, parsnip puree (which I mostly avoided) and roasted apples (which I didn't eat)
D - baked, marinated chicken breast, avocado and bacon salad, grilled peppers and devilled eggs

Sounds like a lot of food - but restaurant portions were very small.

Today is going to be more of a 'hair shirt' day, though! And I'm off to the gym to a class today - for the first time.

OP posts:
Lovecat · 25/04/2012 09:21

Working from home today so hopefully an easier ride in terms of carb-control.

I also have to start baking cakes - am doing a charity cake sale in work on Friday (agreed to long before bootcamp!) but thankfully once I've baked and iced the bastards, I tend to have no desire to eat them.

Today's plan:

Breakfast - home made chicken liver pate and celery
Lunch - IPD butternut & feta salad (sans pinenuts cos I hates them)
Dinner - low-carb beef stew from the Dana Carpender book with cauli mash, green beans and broccoli

Is it possible to eat too much broccoli? We seem to have had it every day for the last week and a half...

I'm a bit limited in what I can do for greens as we all hate cabbage and fennel, that leaves broccoli, thin green beans, spinach and courgettes - any other ideas? (I will definitely try that kale though, I love Chinese seaweed).

ShirtyKnot · 25/04/2012 09:59

Morning you bunch of bastards losers.

So. You went back on our agreement did you? And lost a pound did you? Well. GOOD FOR YOU, congratulations!

I also went back on our agreement and STILL NO LOSS. There's some hardcore swearing coming now, so if you're easily offended please look away. What. The. Actual. Motherfucking. Fuck? No loss now for 15 days.

I wouldn't mind but there is some serious cheating going on and I'm not doing ANY of that.

Bored of moaning about it now TBH.

Breakfast - pastrami and philadelphia roll ups (yeah it's cheese. I'm not losing anyway). Avocado
Lunch - smoked mackeral, spinach/watercress/rocket leaves, cucumber, celery, cherry toms
Dinner - Gammon, egg and celeriac chips. Maybe some broccolli.

Exercise - swimming at lunchtime.

Status: Totally fucked off.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 25/04/2012 10:01

How much fat, Shirl?

TBH - a lot of processed stuff there as well (with inevitable salt which contributes to water retention) - philly, smoked mackerel and gammon ...

OP posts:
slowlyburningcalories · 25/04/2012 10:08

I still don't think I am getting this diet - call me stoopid but it is a major shift in my WOE.

Yesterday
B - Poached egg with ham
L - smoked mackerel fillets x2 with big green salad
D - BIWI's shepherd pie (forgot the leeks) with celariac mash

3 litres water

And by the evening I was 4lbs heavier. WTF?

Anyhow - back to the water today and have two eggs with bacon for breakfast, lunch is fish salad again (I love it), dinner reheated from last night.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 25/04/2012 10:10

Well of course you would have been heavier in the evening. You are weighing not just you, but what you have eaten and drunk all day! Grin

Weigh only first thing in the morning. Stark naked and after you've been to the loo.

BTW your meals for the day look great. I'm assuming that there was an oily dressing on the salad? And presumably you had some extra veg (with butter on it?) with the shepherd's pie?

OP posts:
ShirtyKnot · 25/04/2012 10:11

It's an unusual day today to be honest. Fat wise, I've got a vinagrette to go with the salad. The celeriac will be roasted in fat and the broccolli will have some butter melted over it.

Yesterday I had:

B - 2 x eggs and an avocado
L - Roast chicken in mayo, same salad as today, salad dressing
D - Salmon fried in butter and oil, courgettes cooked in same pan, green beans and a handful of spinach boiled and then coated in garlic butter.

I drank fecking 5 litres of water and went for a 2.5 mile run.

I feel great, loads of energy, not hungry, happier in myself, blah blah blah, but I'm doing this to lose some weight as well. Sad.

I might just get pissed up tonight on red wine.

ShirtyKnot · 25/04/2012 10:12

Oh and by the way, my congrats to teddy were sincere - it doesn't read that way Grin

That'll be all the Envy

slowlyburningcalories · 25/04/2012 10:16

I didn't Blush

Told you I was stoopid.

BUT I didn't drain the fat off the lamb as I would normally, and there was a hefty amount of dairy free spread which went into the celariac.
