**Guidance for a mother who has gained more than 70lbs in four years**

Before the children, weight was 120lbs, now four years later, 195lbs. This is primarily due to the less active lifestyle (staying at home after losing job) and dramatic change in diet (can only eat what I can afford due to extraordinary drop in income).

I know all there is to know about a healthy balanced diet. The children get a very well balanced diet; do not eat junk food (never an advocate of fast food and cannot afford it more importantly), and they eat vegetables everyday (no exceptions) and fresh fruit when it is bought. No carbonated drinks; chocolate and crisps in moderation. There is a cooked meal everyday (yes, everyday) for the children; their meals planned daily, covering the recommended food groups, but as a parent, if there is not enough food to go around, I eat what I can, so at times (more than not) having a balanced diet does not apply to me; usually end up eating bread. Due to my dedication to the chidlren they are bright, happy and are not aware (and should definitely not be) of the pressures in the household due to the financial restraints.

In order to attempt a change personal lifestyle, more so, in fitness, I asked a ?friend? to join me in attempting to lose weight by jogging (which is what we used to do with her many years ago). At first, she said yes, but made excuses four times in succession (with low self- esteem, and feeling very self-conscious I needed the moral support of someone with me). Then she stated that, ?I had not gained that much weight? and did not need to do anything as I ?carried it well?. I told her a 75lb weight gain in four years was significant. We ended up arguing, and she said there are more important things going on in the world then worrying about weight!

I understand there are far more important issues going on in the world (the daily news does not let you forget), but I would like to do something for myself - for once. I can feel the pain in the lower back, and the rolls of fat under the skin at my sides. My knees are painful at times, especially going up and down stairs, and sometimes I get out of breath, and also noticed a small pain in the centre of my chest during the night when lay down.

I believe I need to do something before it gets to a point where I will not be able to it without medical assistance.

So, how do I do it? how do I make the first step in changing the way I look, when there is limited time, money, and lack of confidence?

Any honest advice will be appreciated, as I just need that extra push from those who (are not my 'friend') may understand that it is not the when it is the how - thank you.

merrymouse - Thank you for you insight!!

You have hit the nail on the head on so many points especailly with 'picking at left-overs' if there are any!!

Do agree with you that any changes that I make will be long term. I have spent so many day looking in the mirror and asking, 'what went wrong' - well the answer is - I stopped caring.

Hi foreverondiet - we have a differing of opinion, in the fact that a lot of our food does NOT originate from the UK. However, this is not a point I wish to raise on this thread, but another maybe.

Sorry forgot the NOT!!!!!

Having looked into irradiated food online I can't see that this is something to worry about for someone who is very overweight, short of cash and who is living on lots of bread and margarine.

It doesn't seem that it affects that many foods and even if it does IMO eating wheat and transfats or processed oils in the marg (I eat neither, ever) much more of a concern healthwise. I am not worried about irradiated food, but would not eat wheat or margarine.

It does sound like you are taking advice onboard on this thread which is good.

BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 22/04/2012 20:27

You raise some specific points about food that you then say you don't want to talk about them - but these are all supposed points to defend the way you eat/don't eat what you do! It is very odd. Why won't you talk about these points?

MTTC · 22/04/2012 20:44

Hi foreverondiet - I think you may have misunderstood the thread and the dialogue throughout the posts.

I do not worry about food for me personally; on the contrary, it is the food that I give my children that is of concern. And being short on cash means that healthy food can sometimes come at a cost, and the only other option at times is cheaper food that in general can comprise on taste, and can be higher in fats, salts and sugars and preservatives. Which is a shame but it is a reality.

However, I have gathered from this thread that looking around and bargain hunting can help (not just shopping at one place) and a wonderful link by cantonkey provided me with deals on fruit currently at Aldi.

And, yes, I am definitely taking all that is said on board irrespective of opinions- it will help me in the long run.

No I haven't misunderstood - you are worried about how healthy food is yet are happier to eat bread and marg over value veg than might be irradiated.

Plus you prioritise your children's food in a martyrdom like way over your own. Whilst I can understand someone going hungry so their children wouldn't starve I don't get someone buying their kids more expensive food/veg whilst they eat bread and marg.

re: eating kids leftovers - I sometimes do this - but I don't eat it off their plates, rather set it aside at the end of a meal and then eat once their are in bed as my meal not as a snack. I don't do it to save money more because I can't bear to waste food.

If you are making your own bread why not make rolls such that each one is the amount of bread you'd like to eat in a day, and freeze the rest.

Yet I am impressed that you are taking the comments on this thread on board.

MTTC · 22/04/2012 22:07

Hi foreverondiet - I love your over simplification of the situation it is endearing and proves you are a tad confused.

However, I can safely say that it is not martyrdom far from it, and again you have misunderstood, I never said that I live on bread and marge ALONE.

Never mind, there are others that understand a little bit more, and have certainly helped.

Thanks anyway and have a good evening!

Things always get simplified on a chat board. It is the nature of a chat board.

I know you don't live on bread and marg alone.

What I don't get is that someone who is so aware of healthy eating that they even have a view on irradiated food, could then eat (bread and) marg at all.

And I also don't get prioritising children's healthy eating above your own. If anything your health more important so that you can look after your children.

Also if I was going to something for my kids health and diet it would be to cut down the amount of wheat (and sugar and processed oils) in their diets, not to worry about what sort of veg their were eating.

Shock

Do you realise how rude you are, MTTC, so someone who is trying to help you?!

Personal attacks are forbidden on MN. You would be well advised to read the talk guidelines.

The poor eat badly and get fat. That is how it is in the UK and mostly it's nothing to do with cost of foods - some very healthy foods are cheap. It's about lack of education and just stuffing too much food into them. If you eat less it's a lot cheaper!

Xenia and ladyintheradiator - You are both absolutely correct and yes there are no excuses!

This is another day and another step, and I will use the advice given to make those changes.

OP posts:
MTTC · 23/04/2012 11:54

Hi MooBaaWoofCheep - thanks for your comment!

Following your comment, I have looked at swimming at our local sports centre and they have a reduced rate for those on lower income - so there is a possibility.

OP posts:
Ephiny · 23/04/2012 11:56

So, MTTC, are you going out for a walk sometime today? :)

MTTC · 23/04/2012 12:10

Hi Ephiny - I have done a lot more than that and hope to do more!!!

During the whole of yesterday, I did not eat any bread (ANY), and took a 15-minute walk in the morning.

Today, I jogged for 20 minutes using the Wii from my cousin - Wii-fit I think it is called (took a while to set up but he helped). After I jogged though my legs really itched and were red and blotchy - Just the fat cells I guess actually doing some work!!!

Will walk to the local Aldi, which is about 10/15mins away when the rain stops, and have intentions of heading to the library, to see if they have any books to help today.

It is a start and a positive one I hope!!!
(AND STILL NO BREAD)

Ephiny · 23/04/2012 12:20

Glad to hear it, sounds like a very good start! Swimming is a great idea as well, if you can find the time/money, it's good exercise and easy on your joints.

Be prepared for carb withdrawal - after a couple of days you can feel rubbish - hang on in there and it will pass.

MTTC · 23/04/2012 16:46

Natashabee - Hi there!

Just got back from a 45 minute walk - in the rain!! - Feeling very positive today and managed to have plan 3 great main meals for the whole family (me included). No bread all day!!!!!

OP posts:
MTTC · 23/04/2012 16:48

ohforfoxsake - Hi again!!

Yep, feeling alot better about the next steps, and more positive. I will remember the carbs withdrawal!

So far since yesterday - No carbs!!

OP posts:
BIWIWhoMustBeObeyed · 23/04/2012 16:56

No carbs? Surely you have eaten some vegetables/salad stuff? That's really important.

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 24/04/2012 08:42

I quite like walking in the rain - as long as it's a conscious decision! Big difference between 'I'm going out for a walk and splash in the puddles' and 'Oh god I'm on my way to work and I'm going to get drenched....'

Not sure this post is helpful at all though... Blush
