Hi deadsouls :) I have a 13 month old and a preschooler so I understand completely where you are coming from!
I will be honest, the eating slowly part doesn't always happen for me. But I try to work around it. For example tomorrow morning DS1 starts preschool at 9am (normally it is 11.30am) so I will have a cup of tea as normal, and probably half a banana - basically something to keep me going. Then once I'm home again I will have something else to eat, if I'm hungry. I think I would do the same if I was dropping him and then going to work - something to fuel me through that first bit of the day, and then eat a 'proper' breakfast (whatever that is!) once I had a bit more calm.

The way I would encourage you to look at it is, even if you don't manage slow eating 100% of the time, anything is better than nothing.

The CD is really the key. When I listen to it I find I can stick to the rules almost effortlessly. When I don't listen it becomes a question of willpower, which is very hard when you get not enough sleep and barely time to go to the loo on your own Grin

Rosy - I was reading back a few posts and picked up on your comments about KFC. For me, the issue with fast food can be that the portions can be very big, so I end up overeating on autopilot. Plus it is generally low fibre food so doesn't fill me up for long.
I pretty much eat what I like, but I have to be very mindful about how much sugar I eat. There is an interesting book called 'Potatoes not Prozac' which discusses sugar addiction and the effects it has. I definitely suffer from it, and one biscuit can turn into 10, and I can rarely leave a cake unfinished once I start (yes I mean a whole cake). So I make sure I have other foods which are less sugary, and that I eat roughly according to the GI index - there are some great recipe books around for that. Eg. a crumpet mid-afternoon rather than cake, chocolate instead of sweets, ham sandwich rather than butter on white toast.

Sorry for the essay! Blush

Hi guys

Had an awful day at work, in fact, have just stopped working as I have not eaten much since my 1 and 3/4 sandwich at lunch time. I have more work to do but just can't face it now. I am going to eat something now, and I still aim to eat it slowly. Will write more when I get the chance. The next few days are going to be awful work wise while I am dealing with a crisis. I just wish I could win the lottery so I could quit and do something less stressful!

Deadsouls · 24/04/2012 21:00

Ha ha I love the term 'Pauling'!!

Okay so before I shell out for the book.....may I ask, is this a plan that you have to do EVERY night for LIFE...i.e listen to the CD every night or is the aim of the book to eventually empower you to be able to eat normally (as in not be obsessed by food, or overeat). I like the idea that eventually empowers you, not enslaves you to some regime or plan as in WW.....

OVERATE again today, I'm not 'Pauling' yet, just in my usual overeating mode. Argghhhhhhh why do I do it? I just can't seem to stop when something tastes good....or snacking when not hungry. Does Paul address these issues??? Thanks ladies

Em2905 · 24/04/2012 21:30

Hi all
I hope everyone's having a good week!
Just a note to say that I sneakily weighted myself this morning, after having a good week, and am amazed to have lost 3lbs. This has brought home to me that I can really do this and make a change to my life.
I never thought I?d love the feeling of being hungry. I think that my favourite saying before was ?I?m always hungry? having not feel true hunger for as long as I can remember.
I turn 30 in 5 weeks, and hope this is the start of a new chapter
Xx

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/04/2012 23:46

Well done Em! Smile

Deadsouls - I need to listen 3-4 times per week for optimum results. I think ppeats listens about once a fortnight to maintain.
The idea as far as I'm concerned is that it becomes second nature and that I can eat like this forever.

I have had a really good day today. Smile

Rosylee1976 · 25/04/2012 05:42

Morning ladies

Firstly, a warm welcome to Deadsouls. I was a bit crappy last night so didn't write my usual posts. Sorry The skills Paul teaches are ones you would want to have for life. It's not a "plan" per se. There is nothing to follow except the ground rules and if you look at what they are (see OP), you will understand that these are habits to acquire. There are no rules about what to eat, only HOW to eat. So yes, while this is meant to be lifelong, unlike WW or SW, there is no maintenance plan to follow. The whole point why WW or SW works is because it works for as long as you follow it. However, the minute you stop folowing their formula, the weight goes back on. And if you do follow the formula, you are forever confined to rules about WHAT you can and cannot eat. Hope this makes sense.

As for the CD and other techniques described in the book. I only listen to the CD and I try to do this everynight at bed time. Half the time I fall asleep half way through which Paul says is OK. As I am only into my second week of Pauling, I feel I need the CD, but I anticipate only needing it a few times per week in the future once the GR's become habits. I do not do the other exercises in the books, I just struggle with the imagining part. But I know that many people do enjoy them and find them useful.

So I went to the obesity clinic yesterday morning. Basically the consultant just stated that he wanted me to see the psychologist, as with most eating disorders there is a psychological component. I told him I was Pauling. He had heard of PMK. He wanted me to be put on a strict low calorie diet where the meals are sent to you (which I had to pay for). I said no thanks because I don't have the money for that. And TBH, I don't want to go back to forcing myself to eat just what they want. I have already significantly reduced my calorie intake just by Pauling, so I will just stick with that.

Well done Em on your 3 lb weight loss. That is fantastic.

Hope you all have a good day.

ppeatfruit · 25/04/2012 09:22

Morning all and how are you Solo plus BBB and Kinky? SmileRosy it sounds like you HAVE got it now I don't even listen to the CD every month now; it becomes 2nd nature. Many Congrats for standing up to the consultant IMHO most of the medical fraternity don't know what the hell they're talking about! It's amazing that he'd heard of P.M. But he obviously didn't know about the method because it is actually the CORRECT way of eating Grin It seems that like vets they just want you to spend money you haven't got Grin

welcome deadsouls 'cos it is the right way you could involve yr. L.O's if you had the time Grin.

Solo · 25/04/2012 10:44

Hi all. I have only dropped in to catch up on the thread an d to PM Kinky which I have now done.

Rosy you should be soo proud of yourself for saying no to that daft consultant! he is probably on commission from those stupid food companies!! Angry, so good for you for not accepting! you know you are on the correct road to weight loss without spending an absolute fortune and depriving yourself of proper food!

Welcome to deadsouls :) you have come to the best place to lose weight. And you will learn to do it around and with your family :)
If you can, do buy the book and CD as they are really good 'props' and the cd does actually do something good!

I ate one small bar of choc yesterday as I am just craving ~ nothing to do with hunger at all! I cut it up into small pieces and ate it over time, but I did have to wrench myself away from where they are hidden (from the kids!!!). Maybe I should get them to hide them from me!! Grin I think it's AF time and as that's all over the place I don't even know if it'll arrive this month, so I kind of think that I could be craving for nothing iyswim?

Anyway, I listened to one of my cd's last night and I drank a glass of water before breakfast and sat blindfolded to eat my usual small breakfast. I'm feeling hungry now though and that wouldn't usually be the case Confused. I had many mugs of hot chocolate yesterday and I think I'm off now to have my first of the day to try to curb this hunger...damn these hormones!!!

Catch you all later.

BigBoobiedBertha · 25/04/2012 11:03

I was thinking about Kinky this morning and wondering whether I could find the link to her blog to see how she is doing. Good that you PMed Solo.

Ppeat - I am still lurking - I have only been gone 5 days but thank you for thinking of me.Smile

Tbh, I haven't been feeling great and nor has DS2 who has been off school with a headache. Theoretically I would just dose him up with Calpol and send him to school but him not wanting to go to school and not being able to get up in the morning is so unlike him that I gave him the benefit of the doubt and let him stay home. Actually, I didn't have the energy to argue when I wasn't feeling well.

Solo - damn those hormones indeed although you sound like you have the munchies under control even if it is a battle. I was all over the place last month which still surprises me as I have spent the last 30+ years as regular as clockwork.Confused We shall see what happens at the weekend to see if things have gone back to normal here but no munchies yet. I might have feeling bleurgh to thank for that. My appetite might be about to make up for lost time!

BigBoobiedBertha · 25/04/2012 11:05

Whoops posted too soon.

Hello to everybody else. Hope you aren't being blown away by the wind and rain. Mornings like this when the school run loses some of its charm.

Rosylee1976 · 25/04/2012 20:34

Evening ladies

Hope you all had a good day. Good to hear from you Solo Well done on curbing those cravings, despite the struggle.

Hey BBB. Hope you and DS2 are feeling better. Everything is that much more difficult when you're feeling ill. Hope you are both on the mend.

So, today I was out on visits when I started to get hungry around lunch time. I went to Sainsbury's and decided to buy something I always do when I am in the vicinity : a gammon shank. It's cheap and hot and with the weather I just did not want a sandwich. Now I have never finished it before. So don't think I go eating a whole gammon shank in one go!! My downfall has always been greasy food, not sweets or cakes, although I do like them. So I really enjoy the fatty part of the gammon shank. Or I did. So I decided to try what was suggested earlier by ppeat when I talked about my KFC meal - to really chew the food and see how it really tasted. OMG! I did this with the fatty part (which I loved) and it was awful. I only had a few bites and I had to stop. I even threw the gammon away, although I am sure the meat would have made great sandwich fillings. I was in shock, because I used to love the taste of the fatty part of the gammon.

So thanks ppeat for your suggestion. I don't think I could ever eat that fat again. I do think I might have to try the technique Paul describes which causes you to hate the thought of eating a certain food forever. I want to do this for fat, because whether it is a pork chop or lamb chop or roast pork, I always eat the fat. And though Paul says eat what you want, I don't want to be attracted to fatty, greasy food. What do you think?

LaWobble · 25/04/2012 21:15

Solo, love the idea of you sitting blindfolded at breakfast. I might do that tomorrow and really freak the kids out Wink.

BBB the school drop in the rain / wind this morning was so vile that I went straight to a cafe and ate choc cake and coffee. Oops! So haven't done spectacularly well today Blush.

Rosy that is really good re the gammon fat. I did try to do the craving busting thing with Diet Coke, it worked to the extent that I felt very queasy while thinking of it combined with a particularly revolting thing, but within 30 mins I was happily glugging down a can so wasn't very effective. I guess you'd need to keep doing it over and over. I had a similar thing re some soups that I used to eat loads of, they just taste like pulp now Confused.

LaWobble · 25/04/2012 21:16

(Didn't craving-bust the soups! But ate them consciously and they tasted different)

MardyBra · 25/04/2012 22:56

PMK did the craving busting thing with a volunteer at the seminar some of us went to last year. The woman he did it on was absolutely obsessed with chocolate - she was quite a character and really funny - he had a huge bar of Dairy Milk on the stage and she was salivating all over it. He got her to imagine Cadbury's mixed with prawns (a food she loathed). At the end of the exercise, he offered her the chocolate and she just didn't fancy it. It was interesting to see.

ppeatfruit · 26/04/2012 08:16

Morning ! Hi Ali hope you're okay tooSmile That reaction is exactly what P.M. says happens Rosy when you're eating slowly and consciously so you won't actually WANT fat!!

It works with non foods like industrially produced cakes and biscuits probably yr. soups as well LAwobble as well; they're filled with so many weird chemical additives you really wonder why anyone would consider them right for our bodies (except of course the greedy for profits producers). They rely on the addictive nature of sugar\sweeteners and salt which is why I'm not so sure that P.M. is correct in saying that you won't want Bad foods eventually.

I remember that Mardy it was amazing wasn't it? I wondered if it has continued working for her?

HaveALittleFaithBaby · 26/04/2012 09:09

Howdy all, just checking in to say I'm still lurking but still ill! Angry just been prescribed yet another course of antibiotics cos the doc thinks it's a UTI that won't go. My gym is small and so lovely I have had a fb message asking how I am! I will go in and have a cuppa with them to keep me positive about going back when I'm fit. I think I'll read the book again to try to get back on track food wise. I've been comfort eating while on the sofa!Blush
Keep up the good work ladies, I look forward to being back on board soon. Smile

Rosylee1976 · 26/04/2012 11:36

Great to hear from you HaveALittleFaithBaby. Hope you get better soon.

Just popping in myself to say hi. Busy day today. Will catch up this evening.

Hope you all have a great day, despite the nasty weather!

Rosylee1976 · 27/04/2012 07:26

Morning,

Hope you are all OK - seemed quiet yesterday. Had a good day Pauling yesterday. I have to admit I get a kick out of saying to my husband "I'll never eat all that!" I don't think he can quite believe it and having see me on and off a diet on a regular basis, I am sure he is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hopefully it never will...

Seeing the GP today. When I saw her a month ago, she told me she wanted to see that I had lost at least 2kg - about 4.5 lbs. I really hope that I have done this, but even if I haven't, any loss is better than nothing.

Have a great day! Thank goodness its Friday!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/04/2012 08:50

Faith :( Really hope this is the last thing and then you are on the up!

Rosy - fingers crossed for the GP. I know it will be hard, but try not to be despondent if you haven't lost that much. It can take a while for the body to go into reverse. You have made such strides in your emotional response to food - that is where the real value of PMK lies IMO.

I'm having a good week. Finding it pretty easy to eat only when hungry and only needing to eat small amounts. I haven't been on the scales but I feel thinner around the middle and my hips :)
Hen day and night tomorrow in London for my cousin, I'm very excited! I can't leave DS2 overnight yet (boob monster), so DH is bringing them up to London and taking them out for the day and we have booked a nice hotel. I'm popping to the hotel at their bedtime to feed T and then going back out to rejoin the hen party - and then planning to roll in at some unspecified hour Grin Then we're going to have a family day out in London on Sunday - can't wait!

ppeatfruit · 27/04/2012 09:05

Morning Rosy and allSmile Yes it does seem quiet ATM. Hope everything goes well with the G.P.

arfur · 27/04/2012 10:06

Happy Friday everyone! Not been a great few days for me eating-wise but have just got back from my 1st 20 min run (without stopping) so am Grin even tho I've had a few slip-ups I'm definitely dealing with it better mentally and not letting it get out of hand so am still feeling upbeat! Have a great weekend ladies and happy Pauling! Xxx

LaWobble · 27/04/2012 11:52

Hi girls, just a quickie to say hi. Weighed in on my day 15 and was thrilled to be down to 11st1, I had been 11st12 just after Easter, so am happy with that!!!

Have not had any sense of denial, having to particularly try to do anything difficult, no need for will power, have wanted to do lots of exercise. Not like any 'diet' I've been on before!!!!

Now I need to set expectations that the next fortnights loss will be more like 2 or 3lbs.

Hooray for PMK Grin

shrinkingnora · 27/04/2012 12:40

I'm kind of here but not. About 30% Pauling and rising.....

MardyBra · 27/04/2012 13:07

What's happening lovely?

Just come back from Aquarobics. Been splashing around to the Beach Boys and the Blues Brothers. I think I was the youngest one there and that's saying something! "Bend over, let me see you shake a tail feather..."

shrinkingnora · 27/04/2012 13:35

I'm very overwhelmed by life at the moment Mardy my love. I've just ordered How to be a Woman and Wifework on Amazon which may just make things worse....

Although I am still managing to go for a run once or twice a week. I'll get there. Just unmotivated. Had a long chat at with my friend about it last night and really think it mostly is due to exhaustion. Well done on shaking your tail feather.
