How does one stay motivated when at least 3 stone to lose?

I find the first 3 weeks easy, then I just want to pack it all in. I think its because it's more than just a few pounds I need to lose. I need to lose AT LEAST 3 stone, just to be in the healthy weight range.

I know it's going to take quite some time. I know there's no hurrying it, but I'm just so overwhelmed by it all.

:(

For me it was the realisation, that I was going to have to stick to the new way of eating forever, and that it wasn't a "diet". Once I came to terms with this it was easy to maintain enthusiasm.

I had a similar amount to lose, ended up losing almost 4 stone.

Paul Mckenna helped, as did buying and reading various different diet books as I refined my approach. I changed tack every so often, now eat somewhere between john briffa / dukan / south beach.

fingerscrosseditsnothing · 26/03/2012 18:38

No idea BUT I am about to start trying to lose the same amount of weight as you. Maybe we could try to support each other.

Fluffy1234 · 26/03/2012 18:42

I lost 64 pounds recently (tight size 16 to size 19) and this is how i did it. Break the weight into half stone chunks and treat yourself after each half stone to something like a new hair do or night out. Also buy yourself non food treats as you go along so you get pleasure from non food things. I paint my nails or buy magazines and candles.
I actually found it got easier as time went buy as a found what worked for me and just decided to continue as it seemed to be working. I never had a target and literally thought it would be nice to lose some weight and drop a dress size.
There is no rush and just think to yourself how nice it will be to wear smaller clothes in the summer or the compliments you will get when you visit relatives at Christmas.
Good luck.

Fluffy1234 · 26/03/2012 18:43

Sorry size 10 not 19!

foreverondiet · 26/03/2012 20:41

Yes I agree about breaking weight done and treats.

I also think hypnosis good for motivation.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 26/03/2012 20:46

I've got the same to lose. I'm going with Paul McKenna as whenever I try to 'diet' I crave the very things I'm not allowed. 13 stone and a size 16 here, aiming for 10 stone and an easy size 12.

Mummalish · 26/03/2012 20:53

Thanks everyone. I'm doing ok so far, I'm not giving up this time, I guess I need to just see continual loss to stay motivated. Can't imagine being 3 stone lighter. I can't wait!

shall we support each other, a losing 3 stone club?

silver28 · 27/03/2012 16:11

I too need to lose a lot of weight. 4 stone would be great, would take me to a size 14 I think (am size 18-20 now). Ideally would like to lose 7 stone but that is too daunting to contemplate.

I like the idea of aiming to lose half a stone at a time.

I have started and stopped weight watchers do many times that I have lost count. I lost 4 stone with ww a few years ago but have put 7 stone on since then Blush - have two lovely children to show for it though, so not all bad news Grin. I find I can lose weight on ww really easily if i stick to it, but last week came to the realisation that I just cannot stick to it. Anyway, I've been reading Paul McKenna's book which is motivating me to just eat sensibly, so will see how that goes (combined with breast feeding, which should burn a few calories too).

Mummalish · 27/03/2012 21:16

Yes, let's start a 3 stone weight loss club! Who's in?

BackPackBackPack · 27/03/2012 21:35

I'm in I need to lose at least 3 stone for a good chance of a cure for my illness. I have tried twice and always fell off the "wagon"I am the biggest now then I have ever been. :(

Mummalish · 27/03/2012 21:46

Great. So what plan are you following, and do you want to set some goals?

I'm in too. I've got another 3 stone to lose. Lost 11lb since January but am so inconsistent. I have been logging food and exercise at myfitnesspal.com and it works if you're disciplined but I am not. Is Paul McKenna worth a look?

BehindLockNumberNine · 27/03/2012 22:19

Can I join in too? Three years ago I lost 6 stone. Sadly since then I have put 4 of those back on Sad

Now I can't get motivated, feel fat, flabby, lethargic and just plain fed up....

Desperately in need of help.

fannybaws · 27/03/2012 22:30

Hi ladies I just wanted to pop in and offer some encouragement.
I went on holiday in January and when I came home was totally horrified by the pictures so joined ww online and the gym the next day.
I have been eating well, sticking to points and making sure I eat protein at every meal, I have more or less given up wine at the moment too.
I have been going to the gym 3 times a week and doing 60 mins of cycle, cross trainer weights.
I have found it really easy and my mood has been much better.
Previously I was a sugar addict in the evenings, you name it I ate it, I would hoover the kitchen cupboards every night eating whatever!
I have lost almost 2 stone in 2 months I can hardly believe it, I still have one to go but I know I will do it.
The reason I am posting is that for years I was put off by how hard I thought it would be and how much weight I had to loose so don't despair you can do it, if I can anyone can.
Btw I joined a gym with a great crèche so I can exercise during the week not just at weekends when dp is around.
Hope this helps to boost your motivation because we can all do it we just need to believe we can x x

I lost 4 stone last year, low carbing. After the first 3-4 weeks it became a habit, I sort of got into a routine of eating salads, green veg, meat, fish, some cheese, some nuts, a little bit of dark chocolate.
Sounds silly, but I found that I got into my rhythm of eating.
Feel fat and bloated now if I eat too many carbs, especially wheat.
You can do it!

Tortoise · 27/03/2012 22:51

I need to lose at least 3 stone too. My weight has been up and down for so many years. I'm the heaviest I have ever been now and although I love this warm weather we are having I'm still hiding (and sweating) under a hoody. I have no clothes that fit properly.
I have given up chocolate and crisps for lent and kept it up but replaced with sweets, cake and biscuits so lost no weight at all.Sad

I don't really know where to start. What to eat or cook for tea. I don't enjoy food anymore just eat for the sake of it. May dig out my copy of Paul mckenna. Not found it to work before though.

fannybaws · 27/03/2012 23:04

Tortoise for breakfast I have been having either eggs/lean bacon tomatoes or porridge.
For lunch a big cup of homemade vege soup and some cracker breads with low fat hummus/ cottage cheese/ ham, lots of fruit and veg for snacks.
Dinner fish/ chicken/ with lentils or stir frays with lots of chillies .
Basically I think lean protein and slow carbs at each meal, this really works as you stay of the sugar train and your mood will be better.
Exercise is key as well I think because it makes you feel good too, I don't think you need to go to a gym to do it just 40 mins - 1 hr of getting your heart rate up however you do it.
I have a friend who runs up and down her stairs for 20 mins each morning after she drops her kids off.
You can do it.

Tortoise · 28/03/2012 00:00

I can't eat anything milky for breakfast. It makes me feel queasy and bloated. Normally boring butter and jam on toast. Evening meals are hard because I'm only cooking for me. Dc all have school dinners.

I've just read 1st two chapters of Paul Mckenna book.

Mummalish · 28/03/2012 11:57

I have tried and have mixed success with all types if diet. Loved low carb, really sheds the pounds, but could not keep it up longer than a month.

Liked Zoe harcombe but same, fell off wagon.

Tried weight watchers years ago, can't be bothered to sign up, but may follow the principles.

For this week, I will:

Start using skim milk
Cut out sugar, buscuits, cake etc
Eat fruit and veg
Minimise bread and portion sizes

We'll see what that does....

Hi can I join, I had 3stone to lose in Jan after 2nd baby, who is now 7mths. In last 3mths I've lost 22lbs so over half way towards my goal of a healthy BMI / 10stone. I've used my fitness pal app on my phone brilliant to log what I'm eating and my exercise. I walk to school and back both ways is total of an hour, plus been doing shred dvd 3x a week at home while babe naps or watches me :) I've really cut down on sugar and its made me feel SO much better despite still breast feeding 3-4x a night. In my head its a change of lifestyle not a diet and that's really helping me this time and DH bought some electronic scales so I can see parts of lbs dropping off. I'm eating total 1400 calories a day as I'm Breastfeeding still.

HipHopOpotomus · 28/03/2012 15:07

I need to lose 30 kilos to get to top of 'healthy' weight range - that is nearly 5 stone. I don't really want to lose that much - I can't imagine myself weighing 76 kilos (12 1/4 stone). I'd be absolutely delighted with losing 3 stone (18.6 kilos).

I've been logging all food using MyFitnessPal for about 10 days now & it's going really well. Confusingly I weighed myself of different scales since I started - the ones at the doctors last week weighed very light so when I weighed myself today it looked like I had gained, but I know I haven't. Will now use same scales at Boots every week.

For me it is about making lifelong changes. I tend to eat too large portions & too much fat. I'm not following any 'diet' - for me it is about modifying my eating habits to bring about permanent changes in what I eat. Logging cals (along with protein/fat/carbs etc) on MFP is perfect for me.

I'm eating more veggies already, and looking out for new 'standard' recipes!! Moving towards vegetarian meals, but I eat meat too. I am weighing and measuring, and I am steering away from butter.

I tend not to use diet foods - I don't find these helpful & they tend to evoke feeling of deprivation.

I'm looking for a mantra to get me through this - currently trying out a few, but am yet to find the one! Best at the moment is "I am eating what my body NEEDS to be healthy" - this get's me through any cravings.

I find it hard in the evenings as I work FT & once the 2 wee kiddies are in bed I'm often too knackered to cook. So meal planning is vital and I am working on getting some low cal fast cook options up my sleeve. Last night I had a tin of baked beans and slice of toast - within my cal range and I loved it.

ronx · 28/03/2012 15:28

Count me in Smile.

I lost nearly 3 stone about six years ago - but my motivation was to be slim enough to conceive naturally.
Two children later and I have gained that weight (and an extra stone Blush).
I'm going to be 40 this year - I don't want to be the fattest person in my family.
I know I have tipped over from being big to plain fat - and I hate it.

I've been on the pigtotwig plan for two weeks and so far so good - I've lost nearly a stone.

Vagabond · 28/03/2012 17:34

Count me in too! I've just lost 4 dress sizes but still really struggled to find nice workout clothes for my size 16-18 frame. I just found this website which I've recently bought from and I love their clothes. They are pricey but I reckon I can wear their clothes through several sizes so it's worth the wonga.

If only I could give up carbs! And chocolate! Good luck to you all!
