How does one stay motivated when at least 3 stone to lose?

Mummalish · 26/03/2012 18:24

I find the first 3 weeks easy, then I just want to pack it all in. I think its because it's more than just a few pounds I need to lose. I need to lose AT LEAST 3 stone, just to be in the healthy weight range.

I know it's going to take quite some time. I know there's no hurrying it, but I'm just so overwhelmed by it all.

well done Empty. I brought the Shred a year ago. It's still somewhere around in it's shrinkwrap cover still!!! Blush

I'm weighing in at lunchtime - I go to local boots as I don't have scales at home. I've gone down a notch in my belt these last few weeks, so I'm hoping for a nice figure!

EmptyBotheredPocket · 03/04/2012 09:59

Thanks Hiphop :) I started using it before I got married (late 2010) and haven't used it since Blush I never made it to level 2 and I'm determined to do at least 30 days.

Good luck for your weigh in.

I've just started using my fitness pal which seems good so far for tracking the exercise and calories, I think it'll really help me (hopefully!)

For breakfast I had a chopped apple, a small handful of red grapes, a boiled egg, 30g cheese and a ww bagel with a teaspoon of butter. A nice and big breakfast to hopefully stop me snacking until lunch.

Lunch will be morrisons eat smart tomato soup and a small egg and ham salad.

Dinner will be grilled chicken breast, roast veg and a bit of mashed sweet potato.

ssmile · 03/04/2012 15:58

Well done empty its taken me 8wks to get to level 2 of the shred but I can now do most of level2 Natalie after 4-5 goes at L2. I try to do it every other day, I can't do it daily but its really strengthen up my arms I can see muscles emerging as the fat drops off. I can now do 2whole proper pushups, or about 25half ones and I could only do 3/4 in Jan :)

EmptyBotheredPocket · 03/04/2012 19:08

Thanks ssmile :)

You've done really well. I can't see me getting to level 2 at all!

Did you take your measurements before you started?

theluckiest · 04/04/2012 00:24

Righto. Can I join too? I am fed up of feeling fat and bloated.

Had a massive clearout of clothes today...all the stuff that was too tight / too short / grey and dingy / maternity wear / made me feel fat and have just left the stuff I know I like. 3 charity shop bags and 2 binbags full of rubbish!!

Felt very cathartic and that mentally I'm in the right place to tackle myself now. Lost 7lbs on ww before Christmas but have hovered around 13st since then. Need a kick up the bum to get going again, particularly as I am a bridesmaid at best friend's wedding in Oct and I don't want to be the short, fat, dumpy one!

Would love to get back to the 10st I used to be when I was relatively happy with my figure but the 11st pre kids will do for starters. Like the half st goal at a time.

Have done and quite like the Shred and am getting back into running (each lb off seems to make it easier!)

No wine in the house as this is my downfall!! Plan on yoghurt & banana for brekkie, soup for lunch and salmon with veg & potato for tomorrow's dinner. Always feel somehow calmer when my meals are planned! And I'm going to ignore the Lindt Easter egg one of the kids in my class bought me....

Ok, here we go.......

Fairenuff · 04/04/2012 10:06

luckiest I like the sound of your determination Grin. It's possible to lose 3 stone by October. That would be 7lb a month, or about 1.5lb a week so there's not much room for cheating. I had to cut right back on wine too, there was no way I could lose weight whilst drinking and I drank too much anyway. So now I don't have any wine at home and only a couple of glasses about once every three weeks if it's a bit of an occasion.

How does everyone feel about Easter? It's a funny time to start a diet, the week before one of the biggest chocolate and general celebrating with food days Grin.

I plan to enjoy a lovely meal on Easter Sunday, the full works because in the last 3 months I have not had one single roast potato or any cheese, just normal food but high calories, so I don't eat it. For one day I will eat and drink what I like then I will be straight back on it for four weeks to lose another half a stone for a wedding.

slotrightin · 04/04/2012 11:44

Faire, I like your thinking Grin, I am going to treat myself to the full works on Easter Sunday as well, but in the meantime prepare myself for starting the diet on Monday!

spendthrift · 04/04/2012 15:26

May I join? I'm also on the pm thread but need as much morale boosting as I can get, more than happy to give.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 04/04/2012 16:45

I ordered the pig to twig book, read it through and I like it. Going to start next Tuesday after I have wolfed through plenty of chocolate and my MILs amazing cooking. Will also be doing the shred as its really toned me before.

eatyourveg · 04/04/2012 16:57

Hello - can I join too? I bought an exercise bike off ebay yesterday.

Am a complete sugar addict and want to go from size 18-20 to small 14-16. No idea how much I weigh, just know its too much when my 36HH bras get too tight!

Anyone else dreading easter and the obscene amounts of chocolate that relatives throw at the dc? We're giving ours non food items

Mummalish · 04/04/2012 18:29

eatyourveg, I just bought an excericse bike too, which one did you get?

Havent actually been on it yet, plan to this weekend!

eatyourveg · 04/04/2012 19:08

Its a York c520 I did about 3 minutes on level 3 last night to see what it was like. There are 8 levels of difficulty and it tells you the calories burned and your pulse rate. Apparently you should aim for 12 minutes in "the zone" about 3 times a week. Have yet to read through the instructions to see just how one reaches the magic zone!

EmptyBotheredPocket · 05/04/2012 06:48

Hi everyone :)

Eatyourveg, I'm also a sugar addict and a size 18-20 and want to be at least a small 14-16.

I was doing so well yesterday until the day went horribly wrong and all I wanted was stodge so we had a dominos Blush

I still entered what I had onto my fitness pal and nearly fainted when I saw that what I had was like a whole days worth of calories :(

It made me realise just how many things I was eating before that had so many calories in that I don't know how I'm not twice the size I am now.

I best go and do the shred to try and work some of it off.

Hope everyone has a good day :)

Mummalish · 05/04/2012 07:03

I have become a little obsessed with the science of weight loss. Cant stop thinking about calories in and calories out. Then calculating how much excercise to do to burn off my dinner etc. Then I've calculated the max amount of pounds the books say I could lose a week and mapping it on my calender to give me an estimation of when I'll lose the weight. It's madness.

I'll be happy if I can see a consistent weight loss. When having my dinner last night (320 cals worth), I thought that I should not be eating the mashed potato, but the thought of low carbing again makes me itch. Then I argue with myself (as you do), that low carbing will produce faster results.

I seemed to have hit a plateau. Which made me cry. All this healthy eating, portion control, for what!!!

I'm obsessed!

But it's because I am so determined to get this weight off, finally, once and for all. I feel I need to focus on it and do it properly so I don't fall off the wagon and just give in like I usually do.

eatyourveg · 05/04/2012 08:57

Not a good start to the day - ds3 went on the bike and after 10 minutes had worked off only the calories from 1 yogurt! Figured I'd have to be on the thing 24/7 to get anywhere so made myself a pint of cadburys hot choc with 2 desert spoons of powder as an up yours act of defiance against myself and now of course I'm regretting it.

Its a constant battle between the "you know you should do this" me and the "why the hell should I listen to the oh so boring and sensible" me

ssmile · 05/04/2012 13:46

Lots of people here to encourage us to keep going. I've found I cut myself some slack every 6wks (its half terms so I find it much harder to my exercise in &we eat out more) I have some extra cake, nice dinner out etc but then I want to eat healthy again as it makes me feel good. The reduced sugar has made me less sluggish and my skin glow despite getting up several times a night, everynight with babe &4yr old. I love the buzz of exercise and this is something for ME no one else but to help me fitter &healthier :) I actually asked my DH to take photos of me and kids yesterday as for first time in along time I wasn't embarrassed by how I looked, I'm 4lbs away from losing 2stone I can't wait! I work 4-6wks in advance on how much I'd like to weigh, as I can't quite believe I could ever get to 10stone, but I'm inching my way there or should I say dropping the inches. I've lost 5inches of my waist since Xmas :o but I do have 7mth baby so there was lots or room.to tone up there :o

I'm not buying Easter eggs this year, only a small one for our eldest, as GrandMa does egg hunt so be lots there, plus I'd rather not have the temptation in the house! It's also our DD1 birthday so I've just made big cake ooh er more temptation.... good luck all over the Easter weekend.

HipHopOpotomus · 05/04/2012 14:30

I've been intending to weigh myself at my local Boots - but their scales are always faulty!! So went and brought myself some scales at lunchtime.

Weighed myself and I've lost 2 kilos since my last weight in (on different scales). so HOORAY!!! I've also gone in a notch on my belt.

Now I just have to choose regular weigh in day ........ perhaps Mondays? Who else weighs on Monday????

Weeks eating healthy: about 4
Total loss to date: 4 kilos

approx 14.6 kilos to go!

Fairenuff · 05/04/2012 18:20

Mummalsih the plateau is the death of the diet. There is nothing worse than trying hard all week and losing nothing but motivation. But if you stick with it and keep going you will see resluts.

What I find helps is to record the weight loss on a chart. I have noticed I seem to have a decent loss every three weeks or so if I stick to it. Over the last 12 weeks I have lost: 5lb 1lb 3.5lb 0.5lb 1lb 3.5lb 1.5lb 0.5lb 1.5lb 1lb 2.5lb 1.5lb

This averages out to just under 2lb a week.

I have been having an 'off diet' day once every two to three weeks, just to allow myself a little of what I fancy. The rest of the time I have been really strict, sticking to 1,000 calories a day and going as low fat as I can.

After a while it starts to become habit. The first week went by so slowly but now they are whizzing past and it's become a lot easier to resist cake and sweets and crisps etc. I really don't want empty calories any more. I prefer the feeling I get watching the weight fall off Smile.

Fairenuff · 05/04/2012 18:22

Oooh, meant to say well done HipHop that's a great start Smile

TwllBach · 05/04/2012 18:40

Can I join too please? I am all over MN with half arsed weight loss attempts Blush but I find my eating/attitude to eating is so wrapped up in my mind and self confidence/esteem that it's really difficult. As a teen I was very active and as a result, fit, but I would also binge (Saturdays) and then purge (Monday's Fridays and Saturday's) while eating very little. I was consistently a stone and a half underweight. In the space of two/three years I then put on about seven stone. I lost three by obsessive exercising and only eating dinner. The last stone came off in a more healthy manner and I was beginning to like myself a bit more, but then put that stone back on.

I have a real sweet tooth and will eat to celebrate, when I'm feeling sad, when I'm tired, when I'm bored... It's a real problem. I also now have sciatica and am waiting to see a physiotherapist, but because I left it so long it has affected my whole right side and spine in general, so at the moment I am finding even walking painful.

However. Starting tomorrow I will up my walking to an hour with the dog instead of the twenty minute shuffle round the field that I have adopted. I will also make sure that I Do Not Snack. I will also try and think of a diplomatic way of asking DP not to buy me sweets/chocolate/ice cream if he knows I
In particular pain or had a bad day.

ssmile · 05/04/2012 19:37

Welcome twllbach I know the trap well of back pain, overweight and need to exercise but it being too painful. I slipped a disc when my first DD was 18mths old on the same week I got married. I had to walk the aisle with a walking stick and it took me 18mths to get "better". It will always be weak but its made me determined after my second babe (who is now 7mths) to get really fit again and lose 3stone so I never end up in that amount of back pain again. I found I could cycle with a lot less pain that I could walk. Cycling was my lifeline to getting my life back again, also stretching daily in particular the piriformus stretch as it does help some forms of sciatic as it stretchs the muscle that wraps round / near the sciatic nerve. Gd luck.

princessblods · 05/04/2012 19:55

Hi can I join?! I've got 2 stone to lose for my wedding in October :-)

I'm a big chocoholic. I've taken to inhaling large bars of chocolate!!

and.I'm bad for white bread, biscuits, sweets. anything sweet really and.I get bad.tempered.if I don't get my.fix.I get really angry!!!

sorry about the random dots btw. my phone is shite!

TwllBach · 05/04/2012 20:47

I'll have a go at that stretch ssmile thankyou! I know that when I did some Pilates it really helped my spine, so I'm assuming a lot of the secondary pain is due to stiffness and compensating for my hip, where the sciatica is.

I'd love to swim, but am nervous about people staring at me in a swimming costume! Does anyone else do it without being embarrassed?

Mummalish · 05/04/2012 21:51

Don't you wish that every time you resist temptation you would automatically lose a pound. I swear, resisting temptation requires every bit of willpower I possess. Today I resisted, and feel I deserve at least an immediate pound off for effortGrin.

OP posts:
Fairenuff · 06/04/2012 13:34

Ah Mummalish if only [bugrin].

It does kind of work in that way, though, just not quite so immediate. I have the electric scales which show weights in quarter lbs, that's quite encouraging sometimes but also bordering on ridiculous I realise [bugrin].

TwllBach I have bought a new swimsuit but haven't plucked up the courage to actually wear it yet. I have slipped out of my exercise routine (not that I had much of a one anyway) so after Easter I will get back to pilates and badminton and might brave the swimming pool too.
