mum I can vouch for the 30 day shred as being doable for an exercise virgin. I had honestly done none for years, I wasn't overweight as such, just very untoned, unfit and a dress size at least too big for what I was happy with. I've really enjoyed doing the shred and noticed a difference within a week. Since then I've lost at least 2 inches from my hips, bum, belly, etc and feel more toned.
notyummy thanks for the pointers. I'll get those 2 then and switch between the 3. I really like old Jill and strangely quite looking forward to getting them Smile

threestepsforward · 20/03/2012 21:37

Hello and welcome Mumof and Bobkate Smile

Good luck with the shredding Mumof. You will ache like buggery for the first few days but it soon passes! Try and measure yourself before you start (tape measure rather than scales) and you'll be amazed at the results...

Bobkate well done on getting through the Shred. Isn't it great to see the improvements? I'd agree with notyummy that Ripped and Banish Fat Boost Metabolism would be a good combination, particularly if you get occasional back problems.

And speaking of backs... aw getorf, poor you Sad. Just take some time to rest up and don't think it will undo all your good work, it really won't! Make sure you lighten up the weights for a while after your back's better. When my lower back suffers, I'm sure the weights are a major factor in exacerbating it. Hope you're on the mend soon.

L2 Killer for me today. For me, it's the hardest of the 3 levels in Killer. The end of the last circuit, lateral jumps immediately followed by star jumps (and that's after jumping lunges a bit further back), leaves me cream crackered! And 1-legged burpies in there too, anyone for 1-legged burpies lol?

Hope everyone else is doing okay. Very inspiring reading at the moment this thread!

welcome mumof and bobkate
I started with the shred and it was challenging but a good start getting back into working out. Bob Kate, I had a flab over muscle to begin with but now I have a flat tummy yipee! and my muscles are really showing through. Unfortunately two pregnancies means it will never be perfect but I haven't seen a tummy like this for years so keep at it!
getorf take care of yourself xx sending you healing vibes

I did killer level 1 yesterday...was not too bad but quite a challenge
did 6 week 6 pack level 1 tonight and thought it was going to be easy based on reviews..I didn't kill me but some of the moves I found tough, specially that side plank move..don't like that. I did pretty much all of it at advanced level though. I am worried now that two people say they hurt their back doing it!

threestepsforward · 20/03/2012 21:51

CHST I think like someone said further back it's a 'core' thang! I think the more you can actively concentrate on keeping your core tight and using it, the less likely your lower back will take the strain. Although I think if you're prone to lower back problems, you'd always have to take extra care, like me unfortunately! I have to change quite a few of her abs stuff to make sure I'm protecting my lower back.

Well done you on L1 6W6P, my bete noir DVD!! So much so I never rarely do it Grin

Hello Bobkate and Mumof, I am relatively new - just started level 2 of 30DS this evening. Does anyone else think the walking pushups are easier than normal pushups? I really don't like pushups. Overall I am somewhat relievded as it's not as much of a bitch as I was worried about, though there are some mean moves in it. Also loving JM congratulating me at the end with an almost-growl. Is it just me, or does she say 'shredded' in a mildly sexual way? Anyway, I have run and shredded today, but down for a dull but deadly running-up-and-down-the-stairs session tomorrow, because I am pushed for time and it's a tough but short compromise.

Sorry to hear you are sore Getorf; I have had so many injuries through kung fu and running, I'm probably on some at-risk register somewhere. In the last 6 years, every part of my body has been x-rayed. So it is with some qualification I'd say, get yourself to a physio who works with athletes because most non-specialist medics will prescribe rest, which isn't always the answer. If you have a muscle injury especially it is important to work actively through your recuperation. Also, a good physio will help you address basic use mistakes that can lead to injury - long term, an Alexander teacher can work with you in a preventative way. It's worth paying for a private practitioner, because you'll be seen THIS WEEK and you don't have to beg your GP to put you on a waiting list rather than fobbing you off with 'rest'.

Greedygirl · 20/03/2012 22:16

Hi all. Don't understand a lot of the abbreviations but I am a virgin Shredder and I wondered if I could ask a silly question - do you have to do the 30 days consecutively or do you have rest days? I did Level 1 for the first time on Saturday, found it easy so went for a run then was really aching Sunday/Monday! Did it again tonight with proper weights this time (not tins of beans!) and my legs are killing! Should I just keep going for the best results, what do you all do? I like to go running too so perhaps I could have a rest day from Shred and go for a run?

Greedygirl · 20/03/2012 22:20

btw, my DS (4) has been watching Jillian with interest. He wants to know if I am exercising so I can "wrestle with Daddy"?!

CHST · 20/03/2012 23:02

hi greedygirl

I didn't take rest days with shred but mainly as I thought if I took one rest day, it would be easy to get out of the routine. When I did ripped in 30, I did take a rest day each week so totally up to you. Stick at the shred...everyone hurts the first few days but your muscles will soon get used to it...if it is an injury though, rest it. threesteps I must admit there were some parts of 6 pack that I didn't like at all..not my favourite one!!!

threestepsforward · 20/03/2012 23:29

Am laughing at 'wrestle with daddy comment'!

Hello greedymum Smile (you cannot be more greedy than me btw!) In most of her DVDs, JM recommends at least one day of rest a week. I think the 1 day gives your muscles the chance to recover and build after exercise. I think because of real life a lot of us take more than a day off a week, but that's okay too!

Definitely agree that continued 'exercise' with bad back may be good but only if you're advised. I've certainly experienced recommendations for back pain changing a lot over recent years (I go to a chiropractor when my lower back gets really bad). The advice used to be go to bed and don't move. Now it's more keep on keeping on, but I don't think they had 6W6P in mind with that advice! I'd listen to your body for exercise above and beyond everyday life, and if it's screaming not to do something, humour it and let it rest!

Sparkly well done on L2 Shred. LOL on mildy sexual overtones! I wondered if I in fact loved women when I was doing Shred, but then I realised it was just JM that I love Grin (and DP also loves her which made me realise she is universally love-inspiring!)

Right, off to bed. Staying up loads later at the mo as it's the only peace time I get at the moment.

Night all x

threestepsforward · 20/03/2012 23:42

Greedygirl, I am putting off going to bed, so this is for you!:

NMTZ - No More Trouble Zones - longer than Shred, very much strength-based, not so much cardio.

BFBM - Banish Fat Boost Metabolism - also longer than Shred, it's all cardio!

6W6P - 6 Week 6 Pack - again longer than Shred, targeting abs but also includes all sorts of other stuff including cardio (lots!)

FMIWTD - Fuck Me I Want To Die, the DVD I generally put on after any of the above (also called my 10 min Pilates stretch session)

(you can break all of these down into circuits so even though they're longer you can tailor them to what you can fit in in a day Smile)

OP posts:
Greedygirl · 21/03/2012 06:22

Oh thanks threestepsforward! It seems I have lots to look forward to once I have done 30DS Hmm!! As for being greedy...I chose my nickname when I was BF and eating everything in sight and I sometimes wonder what image people on Mnet must have of me because of my name! But whilst I can no longer eat such vast quantities I am still pretty greedy, with very little self-discipline when it comes to food, hence the need to exercise.

CHST - I am not aching so much this morning so I think you are right, just need to keep going. I am not injured, just a bit pathetic! I was laughing at myself because I found it relatively easy but then I was walking funny for 2 days.

rosalux · 21/03/2012 09:07

RI30 L1D8 done today. Only 2 more to go before moving up to the dreaded L2. Might have a sneaky peak later today or tomorrow. Agree that this thread is super inspiring. I am starting my PM journal today, since there is really no need to wait until Saturday just because of my OCD tendencies.

knottyhair · 21/03/2012 10:18

Threesteps, love your succinct descriptions of the DVDs, especially the last one Grin. Hi to all the new people as well Smile, and Getorf, hope your back feels a little easier today. Rosalux, I really like L2 Ripped, I found the jump from 2 to 3 harder than from 1 to 2. Good luck!
Did 4 circuits of NMTZ with 2 mins of cardio inbetween each one. Still find the first circuit hard, but I managed to do 2 full sets of advance hollow man/scissor leg wotsits in circuit 6, first time I haven't given up resorted to beginner version half way through. Going to do Ripped L4 tomorrow morning, and either Killer L2 or one of the Biggest Loser workouts on Kinect on Friday. Keep up the good work everyone!

robino · 21/03/2012 10:28

Ooh, you sound like the people to help!

I have the Shred. I have had to give up on it because it does bad things to my knees. I tried doing it with replacing the star jumps (the worst culprits) but it's still aggravating my knees - I'm not sure what the problem is as, when I have a DH at home and am able to get out regularly, running doesn't seem to upset them.

My stomach is my worst area so was thinking that Six Week Six Pack might be the answer. This might sound like an incredibly stupid question but is it likely to aggravate problem knees?

Or is there anybody out there with knee ishoos who have success with Jillian?

notyummy · 21/03/2012 10:56

Robino - although 6W6P is obviously aimed at tummies, there is quite a lot of cardio. L1 possibly not too bad for knees (although haven't done it for a while so I might be wrong) and L2 got a fair few lunges etc which I thought could be quite tricky for didgy knees. Intrigued that you can run - which is hugely high impact for knees - but are finding other things problematic. have you seen a physio to work out what the problem is?

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 21/03/2012 11:42

bobcat I could have written your first post. I also was more concerned with the Wobbly bits and the stubborn tyre more than weight. Although it would be nice to lose a stone too! Grin

I am on 30DS level 2 day 5 today (i don't usually do it till the evening then I go an recover in bed with a book!)
Level 2 is definitely working my abs more. Although they don't hurt the next day I can feel my muscles pulling.
I can't do those plank jacks when you jump your legs forward and back, or the ones when you jump in and out. I'm too tired from the exercise before and have to do the beginner version. I am determined not to move to level 3 until I can do them all but I am so knackered by that point!

I only measured my stomach before I started so I don't know if anything else is toned yet! I hadn't lost anything measurable from my stomach after level 1. I'm holding out weighing and measuring until Friday mornings

DH says he can notice a difference but I did stand in front of him and say "do I look more toned?" so he was rather put on the spot and could hardly say "no, not really, work harder!" Grin He is away this week so maybe he'll say something unprompted when he comes home.. if I walk past in a fluorescent bikini

I was going to try the c25k running too. I bought an app and brought the running machine in but haven't be able to bear the thought of it managed to fit that in yet!
I am also going to try 6W6P next when I finish 30DS although I think it will be more like 30week shred.

greenfig · 21/03/2012 11:56

Hi to all the new girls! Hope you're less sore today gerof
CHST can you tell me how long it took you to get to that tummy stage? Sounds like mine & I'm impatient.
fruitshoots is this your 1st 30DS? It's my 2nd & I'm not doing in proper order to releive boredom as my ordered DVDs STILL HAVEN'T ARRIVEDAngry Perhaps I should do in order & then mix it up to make a good start & see results. I am on D14 over 17 days I think.
Am now feeling apprehensive re 6W6P after all recent postsShock.
I can't do the L3 plankjacks & mountain climbers Natalie style as too jarring for my back, also only a few Rockstars as it jarrs more once I tire.
Did L1 last night, seems to be working fine again, with wrist weights all way through. Been to pilates this am for 1st time in 3 weeks & was a doddle! Must be stronger.

greenfig · 21/03/2012 12:08

robino I had knee ishoos 1st time round but much better this time. You have to be really careful not to let your knee go over your toes in the lunges & squats. Good luckSmile

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 21/03/2012 12:20

bobcat? I meant bobkate of course Blush I obviously have too many cats

Yes greenfig this is my first 30DS. In fact it is my fist anything. I don't do exercise, have never been to a gym. I used to swim one a week about 12/13 years ago and I walk the dogs everyday but that's it!

I started mostly as I was in a rut and feeling miserable. It is certainly helping. I am feeling positive and happier. Although that could be because the sun is out and spring is here, next week I might have PMT and be really sad again Grin

thatgirlsevil · 21/03/2012 12:41

Just done day 1 of the 30DS about 15 minutes ago and I actually feel like crying. I have a splitting headache, I have barely stopped shaking and I'm still a flattering shade of fire engine red.

I did try the shred a few months ago...managed 9 days before being sidetracked with a bunch of other nonsense and never getting back to it. I just don't remember feeling this awful and absolutely knackered after it...but I bet I did, didn't I?

I'm already dreading tomorrow as I know the aches and pains are in the post and it'll be twice as tough as today...basically, I have no faith in myself and I just can't see me keeping it up...gah! I thought the sense of achievement would make me feel better and spur me on but it's done the exact opposite.
Sad

greenfig · 21/03/2012 13:02

thatgirl 'you can do it coz yoos strooong'-she told you soWink Make sure you do extra stretches, have some water, it WILL get easierSmile

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 21/03/2012 13:07

thatgirlsevil keep going. I managed 8 minutes the first time I did 30DS!

It honestly does get easier after a few days, although some days are harder but I think it is all down to your mood and sometimes the time of the month!
I found Day 6 and 7 much easier but then 8 and 9 seemed hard again.
Keep it up, you will feel better for it. Do the easier versions if the full ones are too hard. I do a sort of combination of both!

notyummy · 21/03/2012 14:10

thatgirls - don't be too downhearted. It is tough, and evertone will have found it so the first time. As others have said, plenty of water and a good stretch will help. Althoigh you may get some stiffness, it really does get better when you have warmed up and 'into' the next workout the following day - it is thinking about it that is the hardest bit!

I did Killer L1 and half of level 2 last night, for some reason I thought they were 20 minutes and then realised they weren't Blush. Didnt find much that made me breath deeply (i.e not much taxing cardio) but some bits that made the legs burn - single legged chair squat amongst others...

Sparklyboots · 21/03/2012 14:17

thatgirlsevil do keep going, love! Which would be much easier for you if you didn't spend any more of your depleted energy creating detailed fantasies of how difficult you are going to find it. It probably will be difficult but you only need to suffer for the 20 mins that you are doing it. Next day aches and pains, properly described as 'delayed onset muscle soreness' are irrefutable evidence that your workout has worked and your body is repairing and adapting, i.e. on the way to what you want it to be. Feel the aches and smile, I say.

CHST · 21/03/2012 14:55

greenfig after shred I had lots of definition in the top part of my abs and lines down the side, then about half way through ripped, the rest gained definition. I must stress that although I haven't been dieting per se, I am mindful of portion sizes and snacking. I don't eat crap very often though today is an exception where I visited the sweet shop and have had an almost binge. Blush Banish fat it is for me tonight!
