just to help you along i did that a few years ago and lost 4 stone
good luck

NotAcow · 01/02/2006 10:29

i'm with you; healthy lifestyle rather than a 'diet'. have NEVER thought it a good idea to be 'on a diet' as its bound to lead to yo-yo-ing roundabout lasting a whole lifetime - who can be bothered with that?? i want to ENJOY food, not be controlled by it!

good on you, i say, very sensible indeed.

BTW - i take what i like from various 'diet' type plans, ie; i like the basic concept behind low GI, in that the slower release of energy the better. makes a lot of sense to me. plus, its all about natural, unprocessed food, which also seems like a good idea to me...

anyways, waffling now, but just wanted to say i support you!!

Carmenere · 01/02/2006 10:53

I am defintely with you guys. The problem with being 'on' a diet is that you come 'off' it.
I have over the past couple of months just changed my lifestyle, basically just eating a bit less and exerciseing a bit more. The basic premise being that I'm trying to expend more calories than I intake.
And so far it's working, really slowly, but it's working as when I started I was a size 20 and on Friday the dress I'm wearing to my bf's wedding is a size 16. It's a big 16 but it is a 16 .
I have no idea how much actual weight I have lost as I decided not to weigh myself. On previous diets I have found that the scales have been the most discouraging aspect so I decided to judge myself by my clothes. Like most women I have clothes of several sizes in my wardrobe and now for the first time in my life I have trousers that I can't wear cause they are too big instead of too small.
I have not cut out alcohol, I still drink wine when I feel like a glass but instead of drinking the bottle I stop at a glass. If I am going out on a big night, I just give myself a night off and start again tommorow.
If I have a craving for chocolate, I have a couple of squares of very dark chocolate just not the whole bar.
I try to walk every day and I do around 100 sit ups most days. And if I don't manage it I don't give up or give myself a hard time I just start again tommorow.
I think I have lost about a stone over the past 3 months but I'm in no hurry to lose the weight. It took a really long time for me to get this heavy and it is going to take a while to lose it. But I am losing it because I have found a lifestyle that really works for me, exercising a bit more and eating a bit less .

Ladies I think this may well be the secret of long term permanent weight loss

LoveMyGirls · 01/02/2006 13:22

thanks girls, i was a bit lonely on this thread but now i've you to keep me going. i bought a pedometer today not that i can get it to work but ill get dp to look l8r anyway im trying to walk everyday and housework is a good calorie burner. i was going to go swimming but i dont have the energy by the time the kids are in bed but i think ill go once a week on a sat or something.

i have put weight on this week but i have eaten curry and a choc muffin and havent done a lot of exercise so i only have myself to blame! i will try harder from now on! good luck girls!

Hi, Lovemygirls - just seen this thread and think the healthier lifestyle approach is a very good idea. I don't like the idea of 'diets' and counting points/calories or whatever.

My big problem is snacking and last summer I cut out crisps/chocolate/biscuits for about 3 weeks (don't know how I did that - I think the warm weather helped!). I didn't feel hungry and ate 3 decent healthy meals a day, plus fruit for snacks. I did start eating the crisps etc again after a while but I found I wasn't having nearly as much as I'd got used to not having them. Anyway, I lost around a stone, although unfortunately it has started to creep back on over the winter. It's comfort eating in this cold weather!!!!!

Anyway, I'd love to join you as I feel I need to make an effort to eat more healthily. I've just read 'French women don't get fat' and that's all about making small changes (enjoying your food and not depriving yourself) which make a difference over time. I just need some encouragement to get going again!

LoveMyGirls · 06/02/2006 09:21

join me then?

OP posts:
tessieb · 07/02/2006 17:57

Hi - how is it going? I'm not doing so well at the moment. Had a bad day at work and bought a chocolate bar on the way home!!!!

LoveMyGirls · 07/02/2006 22:29

tessie its all about keeping going so you had a bad day just tyr again tomorrow hun, it was our anniversary at the weekend and i went out and had the works ok so i put on 7lbs in the process and i've had to work so hard to try and shift it i havent weighed myself yet im doing it when i go to bed so ill post the results tomorrow!!
i was 13.5 last tues
13.0 (omg i was elated) on sat (b4 the meal!)
then 13.7 on sunday!!???
so what ill be tonight is anyones guess im going to pretend i never weighed myself on sat and sun and see what i am now.
im walking between 7,000 and 12,500 steps a day (just walking dd1 to school and back and pottering about)
im watching what i eat for instance today i had......
breakfast - 2 weetabix & semi skimmed milk
lunch - 3 weetabix & ss milk
1 low fat yoghurt
dinner - sausages with onion and mushroom gravy (in the slow cooker) with jacket potato and a batch.
1 tiny packet of raisens.

what weight are you and what do you hope to get down to?

OP posts:
LoveMyGirls · 08/02/2006 19:21

nikkie · 08/02/2006 19:29

I am doing this too. I don't weigh myself just go off size of jeans! I was a 10 before I had kids just want to be a 12 now nearly there 14s too big but 12 too small.
I could do with some tips though!

3mummy · 09/02/2006 20:33

Hi girls can I join you? I've tried to lose 3 stones after having each of my 3 daughters, the most I lost on a "diet" was 2st and needless to say I weigh a lot now. My youngest is 11mths old and I need to be healthy!!!

I strive to be fit and healthy not thin!!

staceym11 · 09/02/2006 20:45

can i join??? im jsut cutting out a large proportion of thesaturated fat i eat and doing more walking with dd in her big buggy (bloody heavy thing!!!) so far in 4 weeks have lost nearly a stone, is that good??

could do with some encouragement, was size 18 now nearly a 16 and need to fit into a size 12 wedding dress by august 26th!!!!!!!!

weighed 14 stone 2 4 weeks ago and monday was 13 stone 2, weigh myself every monday!!!

staceym11 · 09/02/2006 20:47

oh 1 tip girlies, drink your 8 glasses of water, apparantly 40% of what most people think is hunger is really thirst!!!

tessieb · 09/02/2006 21:06

Drinking lots of water is a good idea. I also try to eat wholegrain bread, rice and pasta as I think they are more filling.

Good news, though. I weighed myself this morning and, although some weight has crept on over the winter, I'm still half a stone lighter than I was this time last year!!!!! I would like to try to lose a stone over the next few months, I just need to avoid the crisps and chocolate if I can!

LoveMyGirls · 14/02/2006 10:10

i have weighed myself today and i am 13st 1lb which means i have lost 6lbs this week!!!! i am going to keep going and hopefully i will reach my goal of 10 stone by dd1's 7th bday in august!

OP posts:
LoveMyGirls · 21/02/2006 19:50

OP posts:
LoveMyGirls · 24/02/2006 08:28

im really proud of myself im finding it much easier now, i have cut down on walking only because of the weather and ive been ill lately but im still keeping at it and i dont crave sweets anymore and im not snacking throughout the day. i feel really proud of what ive achieved so far i feel confident i can get down to 10 stone by august infact i think i may get there sooner, fingers crossed!

How is everyone else doing? Anyone want to join me for weigh in day every tuesday?

OP posts:
LoveMyGirls · 24/03/2006 09:40

im now down to 12.8 stone just from eating healthy and walking (my car is broken n probably unfixable) so that will help me to keep walking.

OP posts:
thirtysomething · 26/03/2006 11:59

Lovemygirls can I join? I have 3 stone to shift and have decided dieting makes me fatter as I eat healthily anyway - if I pig out I gain weight rapidly, if I eat 1500 cals a day I just maintain my weight,. Not good but I don't know how else to lose weight other than increasing exercise. I hate the gym and wouldn't be seen in a swimming costume these days so it's down to walking and running! Can I ask what sort of food you ate before you started this regime and how much you have been losing a week? Sounds like you've done fantastically so far and the main thing is it's boosting your confidence!

LoveMyGirls · 29/03/2006 16:33

of course you can join, i've been waiting for someone to join me but i am absolutly determind (sp?) to lose the weight.

a typical day for me is something like........

breakfast
weetabix/ shredded wheat (2)
with semi skimmed milk

lunch
2 slices of toast with low fat spread and a tiny bit of jam

dinner
anything home made e.g spag bol/ stew/ curry (low fat)

its mainly cutting out snacking and having low fat stuff instead also i have skimmed milk for hot drinks and diet lemonade or squash.

i treat myself every now and again as i have to sustain this life style - im guessing for at least 6 months but once i've lost the weight i can maintain it.

im walking for about 2 hours a day and also working part time so that helps, i could be trying harder but at the moment im happy to keep losing 1lb a week its better than putting it on i usually try harder if i have a bad week, like this week i've stayed the same so i will try harder and probably lose 2lb next week. im getting there and thats what matters to me. i just know i want to be thin by my birthday when ill be 25, im not having any more kids and i really dont want to stay this weight. i want to get back into my pre pregnancy clothes. so far i've gone from size 20 jeans to size 16 and i have a size 12 and 14 waiting for me upstairs!!

OP posts:
thirtysomething · 30/03/2006 19:57

thanks lovemygirls! I've finally shifted 1-2lbs after two weeks of trying to follow the F2 diet - it seems to involve fibre overdose but is also very high-veg and low fat so seems quite a healthy way to go. The hardest part is that it's very monotonous but I haven't been too hungry yet.

How do you manage to walk for two hours a day? That's fab! I'm trying to increase my exercise but it's hard as my dd(5) doesn't like walking and when she does it's snail's pace!

LoveMyGirls · 31/03/2006 08:30

i walk my dd (6) to school it takes 1/2 hour to get there and then to come back and then there and then back again so two hours in total- couldnt do it all in one go tho. dd loves walking and complains if we get a lift. sometimes she sits on the front of the pushchair (with 6mth old in) but not very often.

keep me posted on progress and ill do the same i always weigh myself on a tuesday. this week has not been a good week so im not expecting to lose much if anything as long as im not gaining thats what matters most. ill get there eventually i have to because im not staying at this weight forever. Grin
