Has anyone heard about the Intermittent Diet? I'm thinking of giving it a go

www.genesisuk.org/media-centre/articles/The%20Intermittent%20diet%20.html

It's not specifically for women who want to prevent breast cancer although who doesn't? The idea was to look at alternative ways of dieting to the standard calorie counting/Mediterranean diet as people find it hard and it's important for cancer prevention to keep your BMI in the heathly range.

I'm thinking of giving it a go as a part of my inevitable New Years loose weight resolution and it would be great to hear of anyone else who's done it or would like to give it a try.

My plan is to start a general 'good' diet tomorrow, throw out the booze and chocs and once the dc's are back to school at the end of the week start the intermittent diet.

Well I threw away the stir get and made a ham and spinach omelette instead, and it was really nice! But I think I'm probably eating too many of my calories in protein and not enough veg. Definitely getting my fill of tea though- not a problem for me!

ProfYaffle · 26/01/2012 16:20

How many hours til breakfast?

ZogTheDestroyer · 26/01/2012 18:08

Too bloody many.

ExpatAgain · 27/01/2012 14:52

Hope you both enjoyed your well-deserved breakfast!

Here's to the weekend and enjoying good food & wine (well, I'm planning to anyway!). Will make up for it on the VLCDs next week. Done!

radiohelen · 27/01/2012 19:22

I am zen with my VLC days! Well done everyone for getting through the VLC days. It's only one more week and we'll have been doing this for a month!

Enjoy the weekend ladies.

ZogTheDestroyer · 27/01/2012 20:12

The freaky thing is, after going to bed starving, I wake up wanting not a Sausage and Egg McMuffin but a small bowl of muesli. Bonkers.

My weight this morning was lower than it has been for months, I know it's the VLC day yesterday doing it but it's just so encouraging to see it actually dropping instead of the long slow ascent into obesity :)
I'm also turning into the world's biggest Intermittent Diet bore unfortunately, oh well Blush

ZZMum · 27/01/2012 21:04

Been in US for a week and just not able to do the VLCD days due to too many business meals which I would look mad at to not eat - so whilst not going mad, feeling a bit bloated and so looking forward to feeling hungry!! Definitely saw a difference in eating habits - usually come back from US heavier - but not this time :)

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 27/01/2012 21:41

Second day done- I'm going to have to go to sleep soon though to get through it! I've just spent the last two hours planning what I'm going to eat tomorrow. I'm going to do some baking, can't decide between apple pie or brownies. And I'm going to eat LOADS of it. Pizza hut or indian takeaway on the night. I've found a recipe for breakfast brownie pancakes, would it be overkill to have them too? I've been trying to stick to 1200 calories or thereabouts the other days, tomorrow I'm making up for it!

ProfYaffle · 28/01/2012 09:07

I'm in shock, weighed myself this morning and I've lost another 2lbs, making 7lbs in total - half a stone in 3 weeks and I've had a luxury weekend away plus numerous meals out! Shock Magnificently unbelievable!

Wonder how much I'll lose next week with no big nights out planned?

ExpatAgain · 28/01/2012 09:32

wow, impressive! I think i may be finding the same, but wieght still fluctuates. i've been wining, dining, takeway and choc last night and yet this am first thing I was 3.5k less than when i began. Other days esp on VLCDs my weight seems to go up considerably though. I think this tricking the metabolism thing, feast-famine works!!

ExpatAgain · 30/01/2012 07:25

am on VLCD today, anyone else? Just having my eggs & spinach.

ProfYaffle · 30/01/2012 07:48

Yes, me. I'm having eggs and tomato for breakfast but not til after the school run. Then chicken salad and fruit for lunch, huevos rancheros type thing for dinner with eggs, tomato, pepper, chilli and coriander.

It sounds quite respectable til you see the portion sizes!

good luck, Os! don't think the weight just drops off, certainly not for me. but think it's only 1 1b a week loss which is recommended anyway as being sustainable/healthy so why not try it for a month and see how it goes?

Hi, Prof! Yes, the portion sizes are rather pitiful, trying to fill up wtih drink - herbal tea, fizzy water, hot water & lemon etc etc...

ProfYaffle · 30/01/2012 09:21

Os - I'm doing 2x 650 days, 3x 1,700 calories and 2 'fuck it' days. Seems to be working so far!

I think it's true that you can't go too mad on the non-vlc days, too many fucks its make a fuck up so to speak.

ExpatAgain · 30/01/2012 09:36

indeed, i NEED those "fuck it" days also, there's only so mujch hot water & lemon, water with bubbles, water without bubbles a person can fill up on!

ZZMum · 30/01/2012 10:05

am on a VLCD today and so far enjoying the feeling - a week of bloat has made me appreciate the postives about the hunger - well hope still feel that way in a couple of hours when I am tempted to eat the table leg! No weight gain thought after a week in US has made me feel the value of this way of eating even more!

ZogTheDestroyer · 30/01/2012 10:43

VLC day for me also, banana for breakfast and coffee to keep me going for the rest of the morning.

Official weigh in for week 4 shows me another 2lb down, 9lb total now :) not moaning about 'only' 2lb this week because I'm in shock that I'm happily embarking on the 5th week of a diet Shock and I can really see myself being able to keep this up for months and months so 2lb a week is just lovely.

Os it's not looking like this is a rapid weight loss diet at all (unless you count the water weight lost on VLC days) but the great thing is that it's easy to stick to longer-term so a steady 1-2lb a week x 6 months = up to 3 stone lost while eating whatever on 5 days of the week. Good luck with this week, one day at a time!

I'm not calorie counting at all on my normal days but I can feel myself making better food choices because the VLC days are putting me in tune with how bloated I feel after I've overeaten (and how bad a low-grade hangover after only 1/2 a bottle of wine actually feels, something I just put down to normal tiredness before Blush)

I agree Zog. This level of weight loss while still being able to have foodie treats is amazing. I feel I have to count calories on my 1,700 days, I don't trust my own judgement enough yet.

Os - I failed dismally on SW, although it's easy to follow I found I just wasn't losing weight. I think it took me 3 months to lose a stone and then I just stopped losing any. I found it impossible to stay motivated as I felt I was depriving myself but not seeing any results for it.

I'm feeling OK so far today, my chicken salad was surprisingly filling at lunchtime, I'm only just getting peckish now. More fizzy water to keep me going for another couple of hours though.

Bluebirdpies · 30/01/2012 16:35

Hello all, hope everyone had a good w/e?

I'm enjoying my Monday VLC. Also feel very zen about it all now. Have had a scrambled egg with spinach so far and lots of tea.

Not really that hungry at all.

I will be starting my third week tomorrow. Very excited. Not sure I will have lost anything this week, TOTM and feeling like a bloaty whale.

Have a good week.

Protein - chicken, more eggs, cottage cheese etc.

ExpatAgain · 31/01/2012 02:39

I'm not sleeping well post VLCD again, though partly argument with dh-related [fume]...Also not entirely sure how accurate my calorie intake is, not been phaffing around with weighing. Actually think i might have had rather a bit UNDER 650 yesterday as ran out of milk so gave up for the day and went to bed. OTOH also ate mislabelled yoghurt which was meant to be sugar-free and wasn't..so sure that made up for it, bummer.

Not a zen day for me, but i think i know where you're coming from, Radiohelen. It's nice to notice hunger, we so rarely let outselves these days with all our constant snacking..

ProfYaffle · 31/01/2012 06:33

I was up at 5am this morning but think that's down to me catching dd1's coughing bug rather than vlc stuff.

Yesterday was great, I wasn't really hungry at all. I've had to go back and check what I ate in case I had too much chicken or something.
