Has anyone heard about the Intermittent Diet? I'm thinking of giving it a go

www.genesisuk.org/media-centre/articles/The%20Intermittent%20diet%20.html

It's not specifically for women who want to prevent breast cancer although who doesn't? The idea was to look at alternative ways of dieting to the standard calorie counting/Mediterranean diet as people find it hard and it's important for cancer prevention to keep your BMI in the heathly range.

I'm thinking of giving it a go as a part of my inevitable New Years loose weight resolution and it would be great to hear of anyone else who's done it or would like to give it a try.

My plan is to start a general 'good' diet tomorrow, throw out the booze and chocs and once the dc's are back to school at the end of the week start the intermittent diet.

Ohhh bollocks, I'm heavier than when I started. I'm hoping it's water retention post op as my stomach looks six months pregnant.

Feel totally bloody defeated though.

Arrrggghhhhhhhh.

GreatEXPATations · 14/02/2012 03:59

Oh bluebird, hope your op went okay..i'm sure it is water retention or op related, don't despair. why not concentrate on recovering first and forget this ID/weighing yourself for a bit? you can re-start it in a few weeks?
take care.

GreatEXPATations · 16/02/2012 14:38

anyone out there??! Hello-oo! don't say you've all given up! We've been doing so well..

omletta · 20/02/2012 11:40

Hi - I sort of fell off the wagon last week. It was half term and although I was still at work DH was on leave so our routine went all to pot!
Am back with vengeance now though!
I have changed my VLC days to Mondays and Wednesdays as I found I was really struggling with the two consecutive days and was eating more on the day after to compensate. Splitting them up does seem to help in this respect as on the middle day I am eating less whilst the sense of achievement lasts.

I am VLCing today, but will need to swap Wednesday as I have a work function to attend which involves food. Might do Tuesday or Thursday, depending how I get on today.

omletta · 21/02/2012 10:45

Hey...where has everyone gone? - this is going to be a very dull thread all by myself.

GreatEXPATations · 22/02/2012 10:15

Am here and posted but for some reason didnt appear! How's it going omeletta? Am in 6 or 7th week tho fell off wagon one vlcd also last week and indulged at w.e. , weight still coming off though, reassuring and a little surprising - think it must be the tricking metabolism thing..
Hey everyone else, come back, we miss you! Half term wagon-fallers most welcome!

omletta · 22/02/2012 14:05

Hi Expat - my VLC day on Monday went fine and I was planning to do Tuesday too, but of course it was pancake day...so it would have been rude not too! Am at a big work dinner tonight so I guess that?s not going to go too well either, but am planning to VLC on Thursday.
I think I have lost only about 7lb in total, but my weight does change day by day, which I am quite happy with so long as it stays off. This diet has definitely made me more conscious of what I am eating and how many calories and more appreciative of yummy things with few calories!
It would be a real shame if this thread fizzled out as I have found it hugely helpful and have felt very supported.

GreatEXPATations · 22/02/2012 14:16

hi again, Omletta. Me too, have really found it invaluable support - in fact sure it was in factor in me slipping last week, didn'tn help to feel "alone".
can't believe everyone's dropped off as we were all seemed committed. Hopefully it's the half-term factor..and we'll encourage them to come back when they see we're still going..

I've "only" lost 7 lbs also, but am quite pleased. considering that about 1 1b a week is the max meant to be sustainable, i think that's a great result! So i wouldn't worry if i was you.
makes my heart sink when i see thread titles like - "anyone want to lose a stone in a month?".. I can understand their desire/respect their iron-will but crashdieting like that is never going to stick and is very unhealthy whereas i really think/hope that this ID is a longterm lifestyle and IS actually healthy. Just my view.

GreatEXPATations · 22/02/2012 14:18

and zog-"I love this diet"-the-destroyer, where are you? we need you back and everyone else!

omletta · 22/02/2012 16:33

I definitely agree about this being a healthy way to diet. It is also completely different to anything I have ever done before and is so logical and easy to stick to. I was chatting with our nurse at work today about it and she agreed that 650 calories is actually quite a lot and that along with a balanced diet on other days the body should be getting everything it needs. I hope that this becomes a lifestyle too ? already colleagues are asking me at lunch time ?is it a food day??

Up thread someone mentioned that they had become an ?intermediate diet bore?, such a shame is all that enthusiasm has waned?come back you lot!

radiohelen · 23/02/2012 15:56

Hello again! Sorry I haven't posted. Good to hear you are still here Expat and Omletta. I fell off the wagon for half term too and I've only managed one VLC day this week (MiL is here!). I have remained the same - still 7lbs off. I haven't been particularly good over the last two weeks though. I had a couple of weeks before half term where nothing changed. Not sure what's going on there. Might try a third VLC day next week to kick start things a bit! Got to do something, my hip has been killing me since ds was born and I'm sure being enormous doesn't help it at all. Thanks for posting the leaflet. Off to read it now.

GreatEXPATations · 23/02/2012 19:08

Hello-oo, RH! Goodv to hear from you. So we all wobbled last week (and I didnt even have half term!). Just finishing Vlcd today, been busy which helped and just managed to turn down glass of wine ..

ZogTheDestroyer · 24/02/2012 07:22

Still here, still loving the diet, just been mega-busy with work :)

radiohelen · 27/02/2012 20:40

I've just done a VLC day today - discovered the joy of Chai tea with a spoon of truvia in it. That's a milky goodness right there!

GreatEXPATations · 01/03/2012 11:05

Hi all. How was yr vlcd rh? An doing today but out for lunch, gonna be tricky. Weight loss seems to gave stopped tho been away mainly eating n drinking do hardly surprising

AndiMac · 05/03/2012 08:39

I might give this a go. I'm going to try today, with low calorie but a bit of protein as well rather than just the veg and fruit. My problem is grazing throughout the day, so although this only requires one day of willpower at a time, it will still be tricky to remember.

threeisthemagicnumber · 05/03/2012 10:28

Am I too late to join???

I'm on my second VLC day today (first was Saturday) and so far I've done well to only have some milky tea. Had a shop delivered with stir fry veg and yoghurt and some lovely biscuits which I will have to hide until tomorrow.

I want to lose about a stone eventually but I really like the simplicity of the diet and how easy it will be to fit into my lifestyle. DH works away a couple of times a week so I try to do the VLCD then so I don't have to watch him eat. I do have 3 DCs at home at the minute and I'm starting to realise how much I graze when I give them snacks or tea.

Sticking pretty rigidly to the Genesis leaflet for now until I get the hang of it then I think I'll try and just stick to the 650 cals. I'm not sure I could do two days in a row but hopefully that won't matter.

This is my first time trying any sort of diet but hopefully one I can stick to!

AndiMac · 05/03/2012 12:56

Yes, grazing when feeding the kids is my issue as well! It sometimes happens while I'm on automatic pilot and I've grabbed something to eat before I realise what I'm doing. But I was good when I gave the kids lunch, which was leftover chicken from last night. As it was breaded, I didn't have any, but I did have cucumber and red pepper which I gave to them.

I like milk, so that's been no problem so far for me. I've had two cups of homemade "chai" and that's already half my milk allowance. I heat up skim milk and then add it to instant tea powder, cinnamon and some Splenda. Mid-afternoon is usually my downfall, so I'll really be trying to tell myself to behave or munch on some carrots when my desire for a snack hits.

GreatEXPATations · 06/03/2012 10:03

hi and welcome to newcomers, never too late! yes, it's a good diet, great for flexing round life/going out and good for weight loss. Key for me is to drink when you're hungry/craving and always think "tomorrow i can have this"; i have had the occasional wobble, especially recently, but am perservering. Weightloss also stalled but this is due to said wobbles and a few too many indulgent nights out!

AndiMac · 06/03/2012 14:31

Well I managed alright yesterday, with a bit of an empty feeling in the afternoon, but I stuck it out. But I didn't start today as a normal day very well (not my usual filling breakfast) and I'm sure I've already made up for yesterday's deficit. So, lesson learned is that after a VLC day, I need to be set up with a healthy start to the next day.

radiohelen · 07/03/2012 13:17

I stood on the scales this morning... Well stone the crows ladies, just by cutting what I eat for two days running I've lost another 5 lbs.. that's nearly a stone since Crimbo! I am feeling almost evangelical right now, like I want to rush up to people and tell them to do it cos it works and today is a VLC day so I don't usually do very much!

GreatEXPATations · 08/03/2012 04:45

RH - a stone, that's fantastic! Better than me, I've dropped 4 kilos then gone back up about 1.5k but still down overall. I need somehow to curb my appetite and carb overload on days "off" but it's mainly due to lots of wining and dining as lots of socialising the past few weeks

Andimac, with you on that empty feeling, weird and takes some getting used to. I suppose we're not accustomed to being really really hungry anymore, too much food readily available for that.

radiohelen · 08/03/2012 09:50

I have noticed that if I eat out then things go very slowly but if I make things at home I lose weight quicker. It might also have something to do with the 9 inch plates like this. They really seem to have cut things down too. My dh calls them the poxy plates but it's the size dinner plates were in the 50s. It does cut down your portion size without you realising it!

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 14/03/2012 16:38

I was just wondering how everyone was getting on with this?

I'm doing a vlcd at the moment, but I am very interested in doing this to maintain. It's been great reading this thread, hope you're all still doing well Smile

AndiMac · 15/03/2012 14:25

Last week it was only practical to do it one time, but I did it yesterday, sticking fairly closely to guideline amount of calories even with some skinless chicken breast in the mix. Will try again tomorrow and then weigh myself on the weekend.
