Has anyone heard about the Intermittent Diet? I'm thinking of giving it a go

www.genesisuk.org/media-centre/articles/The%20Intermittent%20diet%20.html

It's not specifically for women who want to prevent breast cancer although who doesn't? The idea was to look at alternative ways of dieting to the standard calorie counting/Mediterranean diet as people find it hard and it's important for cancer prevention to keep your BMI in the heathly range.

I'm thinking of giving it a go as a part of my inevitable New Years loose weight resolution and it would be great to hear of anyone else who's done it or would like to give it a try.

My plan is to start a general 'good' diet tomorrow, throw out the booze and chocs and once the dc's are back to school at the end of the week start the intermittent diet.

Week 2

Zog - 2lbs (-6)
ZZmum -2lbs (-4)
Maisie -2lbs
Radio -3lbs (-5)
Prof - -2lbs (-5)
EBD -0.8 (-7.4)

Well, that evens out the Week 1 wonder a bit Grin- I have been off the bandwagon a little though because of having a hideous cold. I'm getting back on it this week!

Is everyone still going?

ProfYaffle · 23/01/2012 06:54

Os - what are you doing on the normal days? I'm still counting calories (1,700) on my normal days at home. I'm currently having a couple of blow out days per week but want to cut those down when I'm back to normal. I think you still have to be sensible on the non-vlc days. Personally I'm finding calorie counting much easier than SW or WW. Not only can you do it for free but the information's freely available on packaging, no working out syns/points etc

Got back from my weekend away yesterday. Although I didn't stick to a healthy diet by any means, the appetite reduction is still making itself known. The side effect of not eating so much is that I got very, very drunk, very, very quickly on Friday night!

On Saturday I forgot to have lunch, it genuinely slipped my mind. I've always been very Hmm of people who say that but it actually happened to me, probably the first time in my adult life. As we were on our way to a beer tasting, dh reminded me and we got a pasty because we thought more drinking on an empty stomach would be a mistake. Yes, I ate the pasty but it felt like an enormous feast and I didn't eat for another 6 hours - unheard of before ID.

My week 3 is an utterly underwhelming -1lb (yes I know 1lb lost is still OK but I can't help but think that after 2 days near-starvation I deserve better than that!)
To be fair though, I've had a pretty out-of-control week and loads of wine/chocolate/junk so I don't deserve anything for willpower the rest of the week Blush

Aims for this week are to cut the wine out every night except Friday, no excuses because dh is on side and no special occasions (how did your birthday go, Yaffle? sounds like you had a good one :o ) and to come back to this next week with something more wowtastic!

Bluebirdpies · 23/01/2012 08:52

Weigh day today and 1lb down. On Saturday I was showing a 4lb loss but had a very large Saturday night. Having. Vlc day today which should atone for the food and booze of the weekend.

Happy Monday all.

Os - I cook from scratch too. I use myfitnesspal.co.uk as it has a database of foods including basics. It has a recipe builder where you can type in the ingredients and it works out how many calories per portion. Plus there's a database of members recipes so you very often find your recipe is already in there (eg, a lot of Rosemary Conley recipes are on there). Best of all it's free to use.

I've used WW in the past and lost weight but I struggled on SW as even when you're eating free foods etc it's easy to eat a lot of calories. But that's me, we all have our own preferences Smile

Had a great weekend thank Zog - although have come home with a new found love of real ale so not great for the diet!

Bluebirdpies · 23/01/2012 22:22

Evening all, third week in and my first vlc day of the week down. Was much easier this week. I think I've got my head into the space where I know that one day isn't actually going to hurt or feel like huge deprivation (sp?)

Hope everyone had a good Monday? I had a pretty shite one - got results of my coloscopy and have a very grim cervix. At least I'll be a few lbs lighter when I'm out cold, legs akimbo on the operating table next month. :)

Here's to Tuesday!

ExpatAgain · 24/01/2012 07:05

oh, Bluebird, sorry to hear that, all the best for the op.

I'm on my 4th week of this, 1st VLCD of the week was yesterday and went fine. was out with friends and had to specify ingredients of my milk shake while they had wine and lovely salads or fish, then they all had wine, cheese etc last night. I resisted though, found it easier than i thought and am just looking forward to eating normally today that much more Grin

think i've lost 1.5-2kilos in total since i started ie 3.3 lbs - 4.4lbs. not a huge amount but am perfectly pleased and clothes looser and feel more in control.

ExpatAgain · 24/01/2012 07:06

meant to say, also cook from scratch and also use myfitnesspal as almost everything you can think of is on there with calories worked out - tend to go for the homemade or generic version of whatever..

Bluebirdpies · 24/01/2012 08:33

That's fantastic willpower expat. Resisting wine AND cheese! That's hard so a milky coffee cheers to you!

I know what you mean about the slowness of the weightloss. I have moments when I think I'll go back to ww or do low carb to hurry things along. I have to remind myself that I've done these, fallen off the wagon and ended up heavier than ever.

What I'm also finding interesting is that my guilt around food is starting to go. Usually I'd get a bit panicky, stuff myself and hate myself after a big meal. I didn't feel this so much on sat as I knew my Monday vlc day would even things out iykwim.

Have a tip top Tuesday.

ProfYaffle · 24/01/2012 10:27

vlc day today. I'm not anticipating losing any weight this week after my birthday weekend but I'll be happy if I weigh the same this Friday as I did last Friday.

radiohelen · 24/01/2012 20:54

Right laydeeeees more scores on the doors if you are prepared to reveal them.
Just watching the fatfighters show on Channel 4 and they said that 8lbs loss over one month is the recommended weight loss. Any more and you are pushing it too hard. I will not be doing the stilleto workout though... Not quite ready for that.
I have to say I started a VLC day today and then caved in at lunchtime in the face of pizza. It was all to do with whether I could get a sitter for Burns night tomorrow. At first I thought I could and then discovered I couldn't... hence the cave in. Tomorrow I can do a VLC day and another on Thursday instead of eating haggis and drinking enough scotch to sink a small battleship. I can confirm though that with today's weigh in we have BLITZED the Christmas weight gain and it's all downhill from here baby!

Week 3

Radio -1.5 (-6.5)

ZogTheDestroyer · 24/01/2012 21:55

Week 3

Radio -1.5 (-6.5)
Zog -1 (-7)

Well done on the loss radio, and isn't it great to have a diet that can roll with the punches, no guilt because you can just change your VLC day and still stick to it, sorry about the dry Burns night tho', is it something you can do belatedly? Wink

For me, the scary thing is, I have completed 3 weeks of a diet and I'm partway through my 4th... totally unheard of! If I can keep up losing just 2lb a week I could be my target weight by summer Shock I just love this diet :)

ExpatAgain · 25/01/2012 06:12

well done Zog, fantastic!

Radio, also well done for blitzing the christmas gain!

Prof - you may v well still lose a little or yo-yo as I've found after a splurge then VLCD. Hope you had a good w/e?

Bluebird - well i had a little willpower but it's all knowing that tomorrow you CAN enjoy, isn't it? whether you choose to do so is a different matter. I could never do a 1500/1800-calories-every-day-for-the-rest-of-my-life diet..Far too grim and unrealistic. When social stuff comes up, I'd constantly be breaking it whereas like RH we can just juggle it around on this instead.

Another VLCD today and only got 1 egg for breakfast, a little limiting when all you use is the egg white.. Maybe have to go the banana smoothie route again. Ho hum..

ExpatAgain · 25/01/2012 06:16

i think I've lost 2.5 kilos ie 5.5 1bs. But wieght seems to vary - before/during my period last week i was back to where i started so can only think this time of the month now is a relatively lower weight/water retention time..However, past couple of days seem to be consistent and am [happy]

ProfYaffle · 25/01/2012 07:57

The best thing about this diet is the morning after a vlc day! Feel like I've done my time, had a well earned bacon butty for breakfast. My body's definitely getting used to the vld days though, I don't feel odd or spacy anymore and am sleeping fine again now.

ExpatAgain · 25/01/2012 09:02

hah, rub it in, Prof! but you're right, you've earned it after yesterday and glad you're sleeping, not settled for me yet.

Have just been to fridge - saw banana cake, lovely cheese, chocolate, juice, wine.. hell, even marmite toast would be nice! still my spinach/scrambled egg, left-over veg thingy was nice-ish.. My tummy is hungry still, is not full, but is getting used to it now. having lots of sparking water to gfill up with bubbles.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 25/01/2012 14:08

VLC day today...first one of the week though. At home today, I normally do it at work as when I'm at home the temptation to go get nice things out of the cupboard is huge! At least at work I can't just go get food whenever I feel peckish. I'm going to get my other one out of the way either tommorow or Friday, and have the weekend free.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 25/01/2012 16:54

OK, just made a sir fry, and it was horrible Sad
Used a sauce for the first time- I normally just whack some chinese curry sauce in there. Quite sad that I piled it full of veg, looked really promising, under calories, and it's awful. Oh well, scrambled eggs it is i guess then!

ZogTheDestroyer · 25/01/2012 17:53

Break, isn't it frustrating that nice food = bad food and good food = bland yuk food...? (or maybe that's just my sugar addiction and food issues talking Blush)

This is why I'm pretty much writing off food on my VLC days, not cooking anything apart from maybe steaming a few carrots or heating some tinned tomatoes, I'd hate to make a lot of effort and still end up with, well, vegetables! Also stops me picking, if it's food I ain't allowed it :o The coffee/milk/stock drink/vegetables are only there to keep me going physically, not for enjoying, which so far has been OK for a day or 2 at a time.

ExpatAgain · 25/01/2012 18:23

hi i'm being a little approximate in terms of guessing calories but making decent-ish stirfry i reckon, even dh ate it. It was cooked in water not oil, little scraps of chicken in too add flavour as does lots of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, lemon juice . are you adding lots of flavour to it? makes a HUGE difference.

radiohelen · 25/01/2012 21:24

I had turkey stir-fry tonight. Some turkey, veggies, curry powder, water, soy sauce, lemon juice. Not the best meal ever but a reasonable one.

Keep it simple is my motto. If that means grilled mushies and heated tinned tomatoes then that's what it has to be.

ProfYaffle · 26/01/2012 07:05

It's trial and error Breakout, I made a prawn stir fry with all the garlic, chilli etc etc and it was awful. I'm sticking to chicken now, today made into soup with onions, carrots and curry powder, pureed to make it really thick.

ExpatAgain · 26/01/2012 08:14

indeed, sometimes dh says "mmh, healthy" sometimes "mmm, tasty", different things!

I seem to weigh MORE after a VLCD, weird. unless it's all the fizzy water etc i consume to keep me going.
