GI/GL Diet Support Thread - It's 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shiny new thread folks !

I'm planning to carry on posting my progress on a Monday, but anyone else who want to should choose a day they feel most comfy with.

I'm going to have a look at the GL diet properly in the next couple of weeks and see where it is similar/different and whether I should change anything now that I am closer to target.

I am aiming to lose another stone (that would be 8 stone in total), but I'd love to get another 2 off where I'd be fitting in a size 10 (I think). I need to see how I look and feel after a stone though as 2 may be going too far.

Good Luck everyone, I personally really appreciate the support of this thread - it has got me where I am now .

Can I join this thread?
I have just bought a book called "The New Glucose Revolution" (Aussie writers, can't remember names right now) and am totally converted after a nutrition seminar at the weekend that made the GI/GL thing make soooo much sense.
Went out at the weekend to buy some stuff and chucked loads of crap from the cupboard.
I feel better after 2 days ... not so much thinking of losing a huge amount of weight but I have been so very tired lately and have very obvious sugar highs and lows that I needed to do something ...

So, can I join you?

Will go and read rest of the thread now ... didn't read it yet as I was so excited there actually WAS a thread!

ghosty · 24/01/2006 09:29

I do want to lose half a stone though ...
Do I need to 'weigh in'?

Saker · 24/01/2006 09:30

Well done Grumpy ! That's really good.

Welcome Ghosty. I think the book you have is from the people who did the original research and invented the glycaemic index etc.

Well I have gained 3lbs this week . I knew that I wouldn't lose after being away all weekend and eating all sorts but it's depressing how quickly you can put it back on. I surely can't have overeaten that much in 2 days! Anyway I feel better to back to GL again this week.

Well done grumpy

Welcome ghosty - it's up to you whether you want to post weight change each week. I usually do mine on a Monday, although doing it today this week.

Saker - I expect you'll have a good result next week.

I've lost 1lb this week. Still uncomfortably constipated. if it doesn't improve this week I will see my gp I think. Might try to cut down on the fruit and eat more tomatoes based on your theory Saker - it's worth a try!

Saker - look what happened to me - good all week and zero weight loss!

And last week, technically, between Monday and Friday, I put on 4lb - lost 2 by Saturday and the other two by MOnday, so a net result of zero. And that is despite allowing myself a few glasses of wine over the weekend (11 days alcohol free was as much as I could manage!)

Just goes to show that weight fluctuates at the best of times.

It's just a case of staying motivated and not letting the "disppointments" tempt you in to giving in to temptation. They will even out - with a downward trend!

PS Sneaked on to the scales this morning - was 10st 9lb. May make my 10st 6lb by 9 Febraury after all!

sarochka · 24/01/2006 19:26

franch · 26/01/2006 15:49

Hi all, been offline for ages - PC away for repair - will catch up with all the news asap but just wanted to weigh in: lost 1lb again last week - again a relief as went for dim sum on Sun. Imagine how I'd do if I didn't have these regular blow-outs ... Chinese New Year party this weekend will be a minefield. In fact a very stressful week this so far - our house move is going horribly pearshaped - plus it was DD1's birthday on Tue so I did succumb to birthday cake and jam tarts

Of all the bonuses of the GI diet, I'm finding the mood/energy one the most impressive. But I do find that I still have cravings and do need quite a bit of discipline/willpower, neither of which are supposed to be the case on this diet. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong, or whether that's just me!

Saker · 26/01/2006 17:53

I think when faced with a plate of cakes or jam tarts everyone needs discipline whatever diet they are on!

Well done on the weight loss and enjoy Chinese New Year.

prettybird · 27/01/2006 13:08

Really chuffed - weighed myself this morning (know it's not "weigh in" day, but after last week's disppointment, have been weighing myslef daily) and.......

I was 10 st 8lb! That's a whole half a stone since I started! Started on 9 January, so that's two and a half weeks.

Only two pounds to go before I hit my pre-skiing holiday target! I'm off on 9 February, so am now confident I iwll get there!

franch · 28/01/2006 09:55

Thanks Saker & congratulations prettybird

Made Rick Gallop's apple bran muffins yesterday - big disappointment - couldn't get oat bran so used wheat bran, wonder if that was the reason? Tasted ok but very dry and crumbly. Finding Gallop's recipes very hit-and-miss - his chocolate cookies are gorgeous but his meatloaf was disgusting - some of the ingredients are a bit difficult to find too (they're obviously US/Canadian recipes).

Can anyone tell me which Gallop recipes really are worth a try? Especially the cake ones

puff · 28/01/2006 10:40

well done franch and prettybird

Hi!!!
Inspired by Puff and rest of you, i decided to go on GI-diet.This is now my 4th week and i lost untill now 1st-4 more to go.Puff-thank you so much-you r real inspiration.Through the couple of years i went from healthy 65kg on very bad 96kg.(Have two girls one is 3yrs and other one is 1,5).So i realy didn't have time to think about myself at all,but now it came time that i just had to stop myself from noughty(sugary) food.
I would like to ask only is there anyone heard for Hoodia Gordonii Complex? It is amazing thing!!!It works as an appetite suppressant.(Got it from HollandandBarrett). It realy helps-i am using only in the afternoon when i have realy bad cravings for snacks. It's £19,99 and you get 100 capsules.I don't have a link but check on the web for it...and the good thing is you can take only when you r realy hungry(i do ), not the way they say 2-3 times a day and it still works-at least for me at the moment....Bit long SORRY....

franch · 28/01/2006 16:53

Saker you couldnt post Rick Gallop's crumble recipe could you .... ??

franch · 28/01/2006 16:56

This isn't it, is it??

Saker · 28/01/2006 18:56

It's not exactly the same. I will post it and also another low GL recipe for pear crumble which is nice with natural yoghurt. I agree some of Rick Gallop's recipes are dire and some are quite good.

franch · 28/01/2006 20:13

Thanks very much Saker. Let me know which Gallop recipes you've found to be good!

Saker · 28/01/2006 22:26

Thing is I don't have his first book only the second one - which do you have? Off the top of my head, I like his red pepper and rocket salad, wholemeal scones, ham and lentil soup, chicken with garlic and lemon, creamy cucumber salad thing (that has a nice sort of dressing). Probably others I will have to look in the book. I can post any recipes you like the sound of.

I do tend to modify recipes a bit and sometimes when I'm feeling bad I use butter instead of non-hydrogenated margarine .

sweetmummy · 28/01/2006 23:43

Hi!
Can anyone post recipe for a low gi bean salad-something simple-cause i don't have a clue how to do it?????THANKS...
