Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

Aw, thanks all.

I'm okay, just feeling very down in the dumps.

I've not eaten again yet today, but have discovered the delights of decaff coffee with cream.

I also went to S'burys and bought some other food, like more tofu (woo) and some fish. I'm not telling DH how much I've spent in the supermarket in the past few days as he might fall out with me... I'm supposed to be spending around £70 a week for all of us. I've spent about that on food just for me Blush. I'm hoping to get the cost down once I get the hang of it!

ALittleHouselessMatch · 14/11/2011 16:43

Just had lunch - massive scrambled eggs and salmon filled me right up (and I normally eat by the clock). I am sure it was made with gallons of cream and butter too but TBH I just had a pret chicken, bacon and avocado salad and I barely finished half of it (ate the protein bit!).

I might have to think harder about have a decent breakfast - I do love eggs and not being hungry all day was really nice!

The food shopping is a constant battle with this WOE. And expensive. Ouch. I am trying to eat interesting cuts of meat, eg, game birds like poussin are actually pretty reasonable and much cheaper than chicken breast. I also have chicken livers, pigs cheek, chicken thighs (very nice roasted), make my own roasted ham, which all help. Lidl do nice cooked meats that are reasonably priced so I top up there once a month or so.

PS it's FBB, have name-changed for the Mitford thread.

I get in a right muddle with name changers!

Kinky - I have something to cheer you up.....
So Ds aged 12 comes home from school last week and asks if I want the good news or the bad news. So I opt for the bad, to get it out of the way He says he's lost his school shoes.

But the good news, he carries on to say, visibly brightening, is that he has found one of them.

Is it just me, or is anyone else failing to see the good news here?

I thought I might start a thread to see if anyone by chance has lost the other shoe to my DS! You never know Grin

Grin

Just rushing in, ahead of busy day, to let you know how the rest of the day went yesterday:

Had another coffee in the afternoon (I really should give this up, but as the food is so punitive, it seemed extra hard to go without the coffee!

Dinner was another couple of turkey steaks, this time with a little bit of curry paste on them. I also had a chunk of sausage that I was cooking for DH and DS.

In the evening I drank diet tonic water.

And this morning

I have lost 3lbs Grin

Yay! Go me!

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 15/11/2011 08:02

That's great Because well done!

I did something very bad yesterday and I feel quite peculiar about it.

I stopped eating red meat and chicken 22 years ago - I was 10.

I roasted a chicken for the family and I ate some. I think I'm that sick of vegetarian choices generally, let alone on this diet, and I'm not a massive fan of fish. I've thought for a while that the lack of protein in my diet has hindered my weight loss, and I'm also sick of cooking vege food that gets pushed around the plate by DCs (DH isn't fussed what he eats and is happy with vege choices). So, I have lapsed. I am no longer a vege, I am now someone who doesn't eat red meat. Weird.

I feel naughty, and like I've cheated my principles (although these were really of my 10 year old self), but I also feel quite excited that nothing adverse happened and I now have a range of possibility for meals.

So bad.

So good.

So bad...

Confused Grin

Brilliant going BIWI - it's obviously well worth the pain! I can't knock the coffee out of my diet and I know it hinders weight loss.I can't find a decaff I like - anyone recommend a good filter one? May pop into starbucks and try theirs.

Ds's birthday today so Pizza Express tonight. Salad for me of course.

goingmadinthecountry · 15/11/2011 10:57

Kinky, a friend of mine did that with chicken after many years of eating no meat - roasted it for friends then practically ate the whole thing with her fingers! It certainly broadends the options on this diet!

I am down 1lb this morning - 10st 12.5. That was a nice start to Tuesday!

Kotinka - I do lose weight on the higher carb approach - well, I did the last time. It might help that I've never been a dieter so don't have years of calorie counting mindset to undo. Also I have PCOS which ersponds really well to low carb diets. Mainly I think that I am more likely to stick to it than something more extreme. I love veg and since this WoE, have started eating a wider range of veg than ever before.

I do have to be careful about cheating as one bit of bread can lead to a whole loaf but I think I have mostly reset my taste buds and I very rarely want rice, couscous or potatoes these days. I still miss pizza and pasta. And really really good chips. And sometimes bread. But I feel that for me I wouldn't be mentally happy with a really restricted diet so this approach is a half way house for me. Lots of veg, lots of protein, full fat diary, fairly free with the fat but I don't eat cream out of a tub or anthing like that. Bit of fruit in the form of berries a few times a week. No artificial sweeteners.

If I get a big stall, then will go stricter for a wee bit but slow and steady is the way for me. The last time I lost 4-5 lbs quickly and then 1lb a week thereafter.

Out of curiosity, how much has everyone lost on this diet? If you don't mind also, what you weighed at the start?

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 15/11/2011 14:47

Kontinka Yep, chickens are just asking for it. Had chicken salad for lunch, am moving between being well chuffed I can eat something else and feeling a bit grimmed out. I'm sure if I scoff enough of it, that will soon pass Grin.

KinkyDoritoWithJingleBellsOn · 15/11/2011 14:48

ALittleHouse You now weigh what I would weigh in my dreams. I did weigh that once, but maintained by smoking shed loads and not really eating. I had the will back then though: life was a permanent man-hunt. Marriage has truly wrecked my waistline (what there was of it).

Wow! BIWI - fabulous start!! Brilliant. Hope CP Phase 1 Day 2 is going well. Smile

And Kinky - weird on the chook front, I'm sure you have mixed feelings...

On the low carb I have lost a stone, I was 11 st 2 when I started and am now 10 st 1. My goal is 9 anything, but that feels miles away tbh. I have been losing weight on other diets for two years next Jan and when we started I was 14st 2. I am 5ft 8. Tis all about long haul and sticking with it, and groups like this are fab because we all have the same ups and downs, so can support each other very well. Although I did flounce big time from my other diet thread at one point telling everyone there was no fucking point and that the diet could fuck off. Then I had to crawl back in and apologise Blush But everyone had felt like that at one point so I was forgiven!

goingmadinthecountry - enjoy your salad!

ALittleHouselessMatch - sounds like you are going well, marvellissimo!!

Kotinka - I'm currently feeling the flouncing feeling again!! I have so plateaued I think this final step may be beyond me Sad I wanted to stuff chocolate last night in protest, but I did resist.

Ah well, it's all good really Grin

RatherBe you've done really well! You're a similar height to me; I'm 5ft 9. The lightest I've ever been as an adult is 10st. I would love to be 9st something, but have never thought it possible.

kotinka it's incredibly depressing when your life changes completely, even if you are happy with the changes. I had DD when I was young and lived the high life still courtesy of my long-put-upon parents (I went back to uni and studied, but lived with them). When I got married, I changed lots of things in a short space of time. We were a distance relationship, so we got married (only because we had the money at that point in time... well, some of it Grin), I moved location, tried to buy a house that fell through a week before the wedding, started a new job with a promotion and moved DD to a new school, and moved away from my parents. It was all in one go, within 6 weeks, and I became incredibly depressed. Even though I love DH it was such a culture shock. I started piling back on weight (I was heavy when I had DD but lost 5.5st doing SW). I finally started to feel more settled, I had DS and carried on with my job - I was finally getting recognition there. I started losing weight, I went from 15st 3lbs to 12st 7lbs and was still losing when DD became really ill last October. She was diagnosed with Leukaemia in January this year. I'm now 15st again. Stress eating! I'm currently off work with her, so sympathise with how you feel being in the home full time: it's bloody hard work and you have my respect.

Sorry for getting carried away with back-story! My issues with weight, depression and identity are many!

But, it will all be different soon, thanks to Mr Atkins Wink.

Tis possible Kinky - but at 5ft 9 you would be a very slinky malinky at 9st 13! Long haul is what it is... So definitely possible.
