Starting a low carb diet - anyone interested in going for it with me?!

I did this very successfully indeed for about 6 weeks in the run up to the summer break. I have been trying to lose weight for a while and was doing OK but then reached a plateau which was when I decided to try something new. And I easily lost a stone doing this.

It was hard in the beginning, for about the first week, then I sort of settled in to it and it just became how it was. And I like the rules of it, because you just can't cheat on it. But it was sometimes hard juggling what the family were going to eat.

I have been cutting down since Tuesday, but will be going for it completely on Monday 5th. I want to lose a stone. Is anyone interested??!!!

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

I've lost 3lb this week.

I've bought some ketostix, which I didn't have before. So I'll know when I am in ketosis. I've only been being strict for two days though so a few more days to go before I'm there, I think. :-)

Good luck everyone with this week's weigh-in.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/09/2011 16:54

Well done on the losses. Envy Grin

I suspect I'm not drinking enough although the ketostix say ++
I will give it another week and drink more water this time!

Argh - I forgot to weigh in this morning. (I did weigh on Wednesday, but was rather depressed - this week's loss was a measly 1/2 pound!).

I'm a bit distracted sorting out DS1 to go off to university tomorrow.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/09/2011 17:53

Anyway, I have added it to the list. At least it is a loss!

Oh, and I took DS1 out for lunch today. He wanted to have Thai, which is one of the worst choices if you're low carbing - but I was as good as I could be. Chicken satay to start and beef salad for main. No rice or noodles, or prawn crackers.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/09/2011 18:23

Aw.. passes BIWI a very strong gin with slimline tonic, ice and a tasteful pink straw - all very low carb but will do the job..

I've updated myself too for what it is worth
I've taken StickThem off after her fabulous pregnancy announcement yesterday. She'd done really well though...

I just lost it and had a quick weep Blush. I'm finding this hard.

I think a stiff gin might just do the trick, so thanks for that Rather! Not sure about the pink straw ...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/09/2011 18:56

BIWI - I am not surprised. Tis a big step for you all. So have the gin. Leave the pink straw. I'll not be offended. Grin

my twins are due about 3 weeks after ds2's 1st birthday. scary, but I think in the end the age gap will be ok. definitely no more kids after this pregnancy, though!

can you still low carb while pregnant? doesn't the midwife test for ketones and tell you off if she finds any

good point. you are absolutely right :)

BecauseImWorthIt · 24/09/2011 10:07

I think if you keep to the basic mantra of a good low carb diet - i.e. eat fresh, unprocessed foods - then you will be fine.

You could consider upping your carbs during your pregnancy (twins Shock!), so for example having wholemeal toast in the morning, and a piece of fruit in the afternoon.

But above all, your babies need you to be eating well - and we all know that a low carb diet isn't exactly a deprivation diet, like a low calorie/low fat diet can be.

You might want to read the Harcombe Diet book - although broadly a low carb plan, it's more focused on keeping blood sugar levels (and therefore insulin levels) stable, which surely must also be a good thing when you're pregnant? Even in the strictest, first phase - 5 days long and an anti-candida diet - you are allowed to eat 50g of wholemeal rice a day.

Thank you to those who suggested alternatives to meat for me. I am eating eggs, and some fish.

The problem is that DS is VERY allergic to both so I am having to eat them when he is not around and be very careful that I don't touch anything and swab down the kitchen carefully afterwards. I really like fish but this does make eating it much more of a faff than it should be.

cardoon · 24/09/2011 19:17

Do any of you make the dukan bread - here

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/09/2011 19:32

All I want is CAKE and CHOCOLATE and CRISPS!!!

Really craving Sad

cardoon · 24/09/2011 19:40

muffins?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/09/2011 20:44

Cardoon - I could certainly eat those Grin

How would I know how many carbs in one? My aim is 20g per day.

OP posts:
bigkidsdidit · 24/09/2011 21:34

I just roasted a chicken and ate the whole crispy skin with a gin and tonic Grin

cardoon · 24/09/2011 22:29

I think a portion would contain your 2 tablespoons of oat/wheat bran - ie a 10th of the loaf ....there must be a note of the carb content of oatbran somewhere.

I start cruise tomorrow.........

Tortington · 25/09/2011 02:54

after the car crash last weekend had a shitty fucked up eating week. the london xmas do is focussing my mind and therefore i am bag on the wagon

today i had a chicken salad for lunch - ate lunch out at a cafe in town.

and curried chicken quesedillas x2

1 sugar free jelly and cream

i guestimate this to be approx 15 carbs for the day.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/09/2011 08:12

I know that if I fell of the lc wagon now I would think 'what the fuck' and have beer and curry and stuff. For sure. So fab you are back on and motivated C.

I am finally seeing some more significant loss on the scalhang day than just the few ounces of before, so am sulking about it less.

Having the first of my allocated cups of tea and it is gorgeoise. Now I have fewer, I actually appreciate them more.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/09/2011 08:23

Erm... Not too sure what a scalhang is Confused
