I read about the website, myfitnesspal.com on MN. Am truly desperate to stop the ever rising weight gain - I have just topped my full term pregnancy weightSad. I've never really been a dieter, or even believed in diets, but I Have To Do Something. Would love to do it with some other Mumsnetters - anyone interested in joining me?

All the weight loss threads seem so bloated, if you'll pardon the metaphor. I'm intimidated by 537 messages, or 219 messages. Feel I cant be arsed to read through all that and I will never be part of the club if I dont read the history. Advice please?

What am I doing wrong? I'm reaching my exercise target within 2 days each week and then carrying on and doing more. I'm keeping to my calorie limit (and now eating the exercise cals) but I'm not losing any weight and I can't see a difference in my body this week. I'm really hoping I'm going to get a period (I have a very irregular cycle and am 3 months into the coil so I have no idea what's going on there) and it's bloating but I think it's more likely to be the first couple of weeks of no smoking showing their effects. It's been 4 weeks now so I'm really proud of myself but I did eat extra for the first two weeks. It's a damn site easier to lose weight when you can have a fag every time a chocolate craving strikes instead of reaching for the chocolate every time a fag craving strikes!

foreverondiet · 22/04/2011 17:35

gilbonzo I think you need to stick at it. Sadly weight loss is very long slow and boring and happens often in waves (ie 2lbs one week and nothing the next).

In terms of exercise calories, although I think good to eat some of them at least, not good to eat them as unhealthy food choices - so yes to extra vegetables and meat but no to eating them as sugar/white carbs.

I know what you mean about periods though - I also have (mirena) coil and PCOS and haven't had one for ages. I did do a couple of dukan protein days a couple of weeks ago as for me that does seem to wash out bloating if no sign of a period. I was sure I was going to get a period a couple of weeks ago as I has the bloating and was more hungry than normal but still no sign.

I am ok here.... only eating nibbles from tea room (eg a few chocolate pistachios etc) each day and making healthy choices at mealtimes - eg had vegetable omelette and smoked salmon for breakfast. Last night was a BBQ had steak, chicken breast and salad, passed on the sausages/chips/carbs and desserts. So am eating more than normal but trying to make low GL/low sugar choices.

I am sure I will have put on weight but hoping I can loose it within a couple of weeks.... Also read that jetlag can be minimised by fasting on flight so am considering that (water only).

RGPargy · 22/04/2011 21:53

Just keep at it Gilbonzo! It deffo does take its time to come off but consistency is the key. Just keep going and it'll come off of its own accord.

DP has just given up smoking (it's day 5 for him!) so well done on being at the 4 week mark!! :o

Forever - well done on sticking to the healthier options! That's really good as it's so easy to think oh blow it and worry about the consequences later.

Lost around 3lbs this week so obviously laying off the wine and sticking to my cals has done wonders for me, considering my "week" started on Monday!!

Hopefully this is the start of the big weight drop! :o

ChocolateEggyrolls · 22/04/2011 22:04

Its funny isn't it, I ate a bit naughtily today - am sure this is going to happen this weekend tbh, what I find strange though is that my mil was saying how she was going to start her diet on a specific date, am thinking why then? Why not now, why not just have one less glass of wine/piece of cake/ chocolate/ one less crisp/breadstick whatever (not having a go at her at all btw) it just seems that delaying it doesn't really help as you either stock up on your food intake prior to starting or whatever so the actual weightloss might be a bit binge and starve? I don't know maybe its just me!

RGPargy · 22/04/2011 22:54

Maybe it's to mentally prepare herself for her impending diet?!! But it's true tho - it normally means you will stuff yourself silly and then start the diet the next day with all that crap in your system! Hmm

foreverondiet · 23/04/2011 00:12

Well have no idea of how many calories I have eaten today (although all healthy - omelette, smoked salmon and berries for breakfast, sashimi, quinoa sushi (lower carb than rice), apple & chocolate milk for lunch) plus have:
a) cycled for 2 hours on a mountain bike, with DH saying come on can't you go faster with all that triathlon training?
b) run outside - managed about 20 mins but its too hot
c) swum for whole hour fast crawl
d) been to the gym including 5km run, 10 mins crosstrainer AND weights
Am now exhausted!

MouseWheat · 23/04/2011 01:08

Hello Ladies. Just checking in as I've been absent for a few days. Been a bit of a strange week and not really had time for much of anything so MFP, healthy eating & exercise have all been a bit sporadic. Anyway, I never got round to weighing in on Monday, so here's my particulars: 13.12st, hips 46", waist 38", bust 42.5", thighs 27.5". I haven't lost anything but aunt flo was visting this week and she always has me heading for the biscuit tin (well, she does only visit about five times a year...!) so I am more than happy with that. My measurements are from a few weeks ago so I'm hoping for some change in those next week as I've lost around 8lbs so far. Hopefully I can show some self control this weekend and not totally fall off the wagon! [bublush]

Hi to QueenStromba BTW

ChocolateEggyrolls · 23/04/2011 21:58

Ooh bad bad bad day for me, I logged it but believe me it was unpeu depressing especially as I told everyone that I had lost nearly half a stone - bugger it that was the kiss of death really!

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 24/04/2011 07:06

I've got people round for a BBQ and egg hunt today so I'm surrounded by hugely fattening but delicious food all day. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that a trip to the uk in a couple of days will keep me motivated to stay off the bad stuff.

I so know what you mean chocolate. Even if I just realise myself how much I've lost I relax but telling other people is, as you say, the kiss of death!

tookoolforskool · 24/04/2011 08:13

morning all.

Just wanted to say happy easter :)

Im hosting a huge bbq/egg hunt/ easter games thing. today, nothing bar my breakfast will be logged!! lol

But ive eaten hardly anything these last few days, have had upset stomach type thing. :( my stomach has finally stopped gurling and churning so hopefully ill be ok by lunch time.

BRING ON THE CHOCOLATE EGGS!!

ChocolateEggyrolls · 24/04/2011 10:26

Right, today I am going to behave, I am not going to discuss diet again with anyone or in front of anyone, until 14lbs have gone I am off the radar as far as weight is concerned and frankly if people haven't noticed then I am obviously not doing a good enough job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to the diet today as I had crisps and chocolate yesterday so that has to have been my treat day and today is back to being good.

hairypotter · 24/04/2011 13:03

Happy easter everyone [busmile]

Was out at friends for Indian takeaway (and wine and pud) last night and didn't log any of it as I figured it was a 1 off. Didn't get a chance to do shred DVD either as went straight from work so bit gutted as first day I've missed since starting almost two weeks ago.

Woke up this morning and decided I would log it all so ended up around 600 calories over for the day, the no exercise didn't help either!

but I do feel better for having added it all up, I'm not bothered about being over but I was worried that if I didn't log this time then it could end up being a bad habit, and I'd choose not to log other big meals or indulgences. Would be a slippery slope I think as I have zero willpower.

I'm looking at the mahoosive Easter egg in the kitchen and mentally working out how many calories in a wee chunk [bugrin]

foreverondiet · 24/04/2011 17:50

Hi all and happy easter. Mmm easter eggs and dieting (esp low carb dieting) not a good combo. DH and the DC are on the hotel lawn in the mother of all egg hunts. I am still being good here, interesting I guess veering towards Paul McKenna way of thinking, eat if hungry stop when full. As I said in amazing hotel with all you can eat food included and tea room and tent cooking chips/burgers/chicken/sausages etc round the clock, yet I weighed myself this morning and as the scales not digital and in pounds, hard to see if I'd gained anything at all or maybe 1 or 2 pounds. Kids going to day camp this morning so I am going to have a morning in the gym!

tookoolforskool · 24/04/2011 18:06

Blush
ChocolateEggyrolls · 24/04/2011 22:12

I am not looking forward to weigh in tomorrow - I think because I did so well (4lbs) the first week and I know I haven't done the same again. Gutting. Am not mentioning my weight again to anyone other than on here!!!!!!!!!!1

In addition, once you start with something (the naughty stuff) you feel like you have failed so carry on. So depressing.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 25/04/2011 08:51

Some of my guests from yesterday stayed over and I feel it would be very rude to get the Wii out and weigh myself in front of them this morning therefore I must politely decline from weigh-in today this has nothing to do with the amount of crap I inhaled yesterday Grin I will let you all know of my epic fail tomorrow!

QueenStromba · 25/04/2011 09:37

I'm at my DP's parents' house so can't weigh in until tomorrow either. I'd written this weekend off because it's pretty difficult to follow a diet at someone else's house without being awkward and it seems pretty rude to not eat, drink and be merry along with everyone else. I'm hoping that deciding this in advance will make it easier for me to get back into it tomorrow.

hairypotter · 25/04/2011 09:56

I thought id better bite the bullet and jump on scales even tho sat wasn't a good day (understatement)

hairypotter start 13'4 now 12'8 loss this week 1lb total 10lb

Only a wee bit off, still feel the amount of exercise I'm doing should shift the lard a bit faster, but a loss is a loss I suppose.

Good luck everyone who is braving scales today or tomorrow and fingers crossed for great results

BettyButterknife · 25/04/2011 10:13

Ok, I too have written this weekend off. We're having family over today and we're making lots of curries, breads, chutneys etc. so I will have to get back on the wagon tomorrow and try not to feel guilty about it.

I weighed myself this morning - I have put on 1.5lb but I'm really not surprised!
hairypotter start 13'4 now 12'8 loss this week 1lb total 10lb
Bettybutterknife start 13'7 now 12'9 gained 1.5lb total loss 12.5lb

oh well!

tookoolforskool · 25/04/2011 15:42

hairy - honestly thats EXACALLY what i thought, the effort involved in shredding, and the dedication to do it everyday AND the HUGE amount of hard work it took was not worth it. ( while having so much to lose)
My weight loss was the same ( actually quicker) without doing the shred at the same time.

It seems this is quite common.

Shred isnt really fat burning, its toning and muscle building, which is great and all, but i think, when you have a lot to lose maybe that exercise time is spent doing more fat buring/cardio instead.

But its better than doing nothing at all.

( spoke to an amy PTI about it... thats where i got that info from )

I will be weighing in wed. time of the month and am bloated.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 25/04/2011 19:06

Well, after a fairly crap food day yesterday I've gone all sensible on myself and had a very healthy day today lots of salad, grilled chicken sandwich on wholemeal bread etc. We spent the day at the beach and it was 31 degrees which made me realise again that I can't be this size and be happy so this evening I went back out on my bike and talked through an exercise plan with dh for the next couple of weeks. I'm going to the UK on Wed so it will be harder to fit exercise in but I'm going to do my best and I've already prepped my mum on how awkward I'm going to be to feed Grin

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 25/04/2011 19:12

Ooops, I completely forgot to say thank you for all the support the other day when I was feeling down on this Blush, so thank you!

And well done for the losses/staying the sames/teeny weeny gains - this weekend is bloody hard for dieters and I think anyone who manages to get through without thinking fuck it and giving it all up and eating all the dc's eggs has done bloody well!

ChocolateEggyrolls · 25/04/2011 21:35

I have lost 2lbs this week! Yay - good steady progress

So I am now going to bite the bullet and write it all down
