New Thread for Lo Carbers/non-carbers, etc

WhereamI · 07/02/2011 16:31

Old lo-carb thread was 'too big' and wouldn't let me post this. It's for a almond meal pancake - I find one is really filling (I have it with total yoghurt and blueberries) and leave the mix in the fridge to have another next day.

Ingredients:
?1 cup almond flour
?2 eggs
?1/4 cup water (for puffier pancakes, you can use sparkling water)
?2 T oil
?1/4 teaspoon salt
?1 T sweetener
Preparation:
Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes. I like to use a nonstick pan with a little oil. The only real difference is that they won't "bubble" on top the same way as regular pancakes. Flip them when the underside is brown.

Yield: Six 4-inch pancakes

Nutritional Information: Each pancake has 1 gram effective carbohydrate, plus 2 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 155 calories.

Oh, and welcome Meg and Tical!

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 09:35

Still 10 7.5 this morning which is still my lowest weight for about a year. I did drnk litres of water yesterday though. It does seem to help.

Feel like I am on a roll again. Just have to negotiate Friday night (which will involve some booze) and then the rest of the weekend should be okay as not up to much, just mooching with DH.

Lovely fish recipe. It's a Nigel Slater one (who is my god).

Heat oven to 200.

Heat some olive oil and butter over a moderate heat in oven proof dish. Put in fillet of white fish, skin side down and allow to cook in lightly bubbling oil/butter for 1-2 mins until skin is just starting to turn golden.

Flip over the fish, season with salt and pepper and put into the oven until cooked - takes about 8-10 mins.

This is so tasty; would be great with cauli cheese or the celeriac daph. I had with greens.

ps hello to newbies!

systemsaddict · 11/02/2011 09:43

ugh I have a cold and feel miserable. I want to sip Lemsip and suck Lockets all day and I can't. And I'm all swelled up so back up to 183. Which to be fair I would have been excited by 2 weeks ago, but am not seeing it from that perspective now. I've taken paracetamol and decongestants and that will probably stall my weight loss for a bit too.

waaaaaah.

off to make coffee and pretend it's a soothing taking care of me kind of drink.

On the plus side, I have no appetite.

OOH I had forgotten cheese crisps though! they are great!

CointreauVersial · 11/02/2011 10:09

Beryl - you have a relative who lays eggs??!Grin

Hiya newbies, join the low-carb...er....fun.

Systems - you are not well. Have a Lemsip fgs (aren't they mostly sweetener?).

Sal - amazing weight-loss!

FBB - Hmm..not sure I like the sound of that recipe - seems very plain. I normally like something going on with my white fish, or it's too....fishy iyswim.

Talking of dodgy recipes, I tried the almond pancakes this morning. OMG, revolting. I skimped on the splenda, which was probably a mistake, so ended up with a thick, faintly almond-flavoured omelette. I ended up topping it with some pieces of pineapple in an attempt to force it down, but it is now sitting on my stomach really unpleasantly. Strange, the savoury linseed ones I made the other day were gorgeous. Oh well, can't win 'em all.

DH is getting into the swing of things and reports a looser trouser waistband, but most alarmingly his wedding ring (which has been firmly wedged on his finger for nine years) keeps falling off! But he told me if I force him to eat another of those almond pancakes he'll be taking it off permanently.Grin Maybe a cheese lollipop will appease him.

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 10:10

Oh poor you, systemaddict.

Hot water and lemon? Even without the honey it is rather soothing. Although say bye bye to your tooth enamel!

Or Chamomile tea is also nice. In fact, there is a lovely twinings chmomile and spiced apple tea which is so so tasty. The IPD diet says that fruit teas are okay so might not be too stall-y.

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 10:14

Oi CV, don't diss the cheese and PB. It rocks.

It's the butter that makes the fish recipe. Makes it all soft and yummy.

If you want a sauce, you can do salsa verde. Parsley, mint, coriander, clove garlic, couple of anchovies, squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper, whizzed in the whizzer with plenty of good olive oil. Very perky and spring-like. Also lovely with griddled chicken. Actually, I think that will be Sunday lunch chez FBB.

CointreauVersial · 11/02/2011 10:25

How about PB on your fish? Grin

systemsaddict · 11/02/2011 10:32

Can't do Lemsip 'cos I can't cope with sweeteners Cointreau, they cause me massive carb cravings, sadly! Even sugar-free chewing gum sets me off. But hadn't thought of just hot water and lemon FBB, will try that - it will make me feel looked after Grin. Will also see if I can track down that spiced apple tea - is it sweet to the taste or not very?

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 10:52

CV - Bleurgh!

SA - it's not really sweet at all. It tastes apple-y and spicey but quite clean. I often have it when I can't sleep as a pre bed drink. Sends me right off.

sassyTHEFIRST · 11/02/2011 11:04

Hi ladies,

How long does the carb-withdrawal headache last? Day 2 here and I feel GRIM. Can I expect to be feeling better tomorrow or do I have to think in terms of a week?

FauxFox · 11/02/2011 11:07

I had headaches on and off for the first 5 days but after that was fine - hang in there! Drink lots of water, it helps.

CointreauVersial · 11/02/2011 11:09

Just been for a 30 minute run and that blardy almond pancake is still sitting on my stomach. Gah!

BerylStreep · 11/02/2011 11:13

FBB - does hot water & lemon affect your enamel? I drink it all the time, didn't know it was bad for your teeth.

Sassy, I think most people find feeling rough lasts about 5-6 days, but it varies from person to person. Drink lots of water.

(I promise I don't work for the water Board! Grin)

BerylStreep · 11/02/2011 11:14

FauxFox - cross-posts!

headfairy · 11/02/2011 11:18

Morning all,

Sal, that's an amazing achievement, congratulations!

Parmesan crisps sound fab, I might have to try them this weekend. And I've stuck a celeriac on my food order this week! I presume celeriac mash is ok?

Today for me
B: nothing yet - haven't had a second to sort anything out, have some nuts in my bag
L: homemade mushroom soup
D: bacon and avocado salad.
got some babybels for snacking on too.

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 13:07

Beryl - think it's the acid in the lemon juice. A bit like all fruit juices, they are not great for your teeth to be exposed to all day long.

Had no-tortilla-fajita-salad again today for lunch. Lovely pulled pork on this one. I have now found three places that do them and wouldn't you know the nicest one is furthest away! Pah! S'pse the exercise will do me good.

Sassy - took me about a week to lose the weak leg feeling. Now I feel much much perkier and need less sleep than before = weird but true!

sassyTHEFIRST · 11/02/2011 16:05

Thanks for encouraging words ladies. Am feeling a little better (it helps that I haven't ditched caffeine!) and juat managed 40 mins on the cross-trainer. Legs ok, just the head here.

You must be an expert on low carbing by now Sal! :o

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/02/2011 16:23

Am girding my loins to go out for dinner tonight. I know there will be wine, so no point worrying about that Grin!

Menu looks manageable , as long as the wine doesn't interfere with my resolve!

And then for Valentine's Day DH is taking me here

Again, alcohol aside, should be doable ...

Scales weren't kind to me this morning, but I don't know why as I haven't done anything untowards. Just one of those things about daily weighing I suppose.

FreeButtonBee · 11/02/2011 16:46

Just discovered M&S chocolate meringues. 2.7 carbs each. They are diddy but 2 of them hit the chocolate spot and saved me from a vat of maltesers.

BIWI - those menus look lovely - specially the Luxe. I've been to the lighthouse - it's v nice. We were put beside a table with a family who were being very loud and disruptive. They moved us as soon as they could without us having to say anything. We wouldn't have complained - it was a bank holiday monday lunchtime so to be expected - but nice that they looked after us without having to make a fuss.

FauxFox · 11/02/2011 18:36

Am having a glass of red wine...Mmmmm

Well 13 days 'dry' is better than none!

frazzledblob · 11/02/2011 18:44

Hello everyone.

I am feeling all inspired again, its great hearing about everyones weight losses even if I did stay the same last week!

Not weighing this week as I am enjoying the added benefits of low carbing at the moment:
constant hunger/snacking gone, happy eating smaller portions, my skin is clearing up and I am no longer a chocoholic Grin

Today I have had
B: flaxseed muffins and peanuts at work,
L: homemade coleslaw (white cabbage, beetroot, mayo & celariac)with tofu burgers
D: salad, coleslaw, tofu burgers, cheese crisps & dip

I have a rhubarb crumble cooking away. Tried something different and have made the crumble with ground almonds, dessicated coconut & flaxseed.

Must try the celariac chips. Anyone else eating in on Valentines? Might have to look up a tasty lowish carb choc pudding.

frazzledblob · 11/02/2011 18:57

Think someone asked on the last thread about the tofu burgers:

crumble up some firm tofu in a bowl, add chopped chilli, onion, garlic. give it a few minutes to absorb the flavours. add a handful of quorn/soya mince. mix in one beaten egg and then shape into burgers.

I chucked mine in the oven while making tea for everyone else but you could fry them off.
