New Thread for Lo Carbers/non-carbers, etc

WhereamI · 07/02/2011 16:31

Old lo-carb thread was 'too big' and wouldn't let me post this. It's for a almond meal pancake - I find one is really filling (I have it with total yoghurt and blueberries) and leave the mix in the fridge to have another next day.

Ingredients:
?1 cup almond flour
?2 eggs
?1/4 cup water (for puffier pancakes, you can use sparkling water)
?2 T oil
?1/4 teaspoon salt
?1 T sweetener
Preparation:
Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes. I like to use a nonstick pan with a little oil. The only real difference is that they won't "bubble" on top the same way as regular pancakes. Flip them when the underside is brown.

Yield: Six 4-inch pancakes

Nutritional Information: Each pancake has 1 gram effective carbohydrate, plus 2 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 155 calories.

FauxFox · 10/02/2011 07:43

That soup sounds good - another one for next week I think!

Today:

B: leftover cabbage with melted cheese
L: Beef burger with avocado and mayo
D: Broc and cheese souffle and salad

Only two days until i've finished Phase 1 of IPD - wine ahoy!!

FreeButtonBee · 10/02/2011 07:55

Woo hoo 10 6.75 this morning. Lowest weight in about 2 years. Will see if it sticks but that's a big boost!

FauxFox · 10/02/2011 10:25

Well done free Smile

I was 10st9 this morn and to have the lbs in single figs made me smile today too Smile

Tortington · 10/02/2011 13:42

congrats!

Sharkadder · 10/02/2011 14:56

custardo, the soup I made yesterday was:

1 head of broccoli (300g) - 12g
400g celeriac (cubed) - 10g
75g blue cheese - 1g
1.2l veg stock - 6g (but could've got that much lower by making better choices/using less stock powder).

That made at least 1.4 litres of soup for a total carb count of 29g.

It made five portions (but of course depends how much you want), which was just under 6g a portion.

Which isn't massively high for the veg count, and could be reduced loads by using less veg boullion.

BerylStreep · 10/02/2011 16:06

Well done FBB!

headfairy · 10/02/2011 16:14

hello everyone finally found you all - or were you deliberately trying to hide? :o

sorry to jump straight on and ask for advice, but despite doing very low carbs I'm actually gaining weight. My mum says it's because I do occasionally slip up... for example yesterday I had a teeny piece of ds's cheese sandwich, probably about an eighth of a normal sandwich. I think I've been really good, certainly better than I normally am. But she says those little slip ups will be totally undoing all my hard work.

Is she right?

I'll be royally hacked off if she is. I've put on 5lbs in two weeks doing low carbs. I've allowed myself maybe one meal a week when I just have what I want... on Sunday I had one roast potato at lunch and some pudding to follow (apple pie)

Today I've had...

1 egg and sausage muffin from India and Neris' cook book
1 cup of tea with splash of milk

bowl of homemade cream of mushroom soup
two sticks of celery with cheese dip

one cup of tea with milk and splenda

two babybels

For dinner tonight I'm having tuna mayo lettuce wraps.

That's pretty much a normal day for me. Where on earth am I going wrong? I've got a bad back at the moment and find exercising really hard. I normally do a buggy fit class but I can't even manage that, though I'm trying to walk as much as possible and do spend most of the day (when I'm not at work) running around after the dcs, so I'm not sitting on my bum all day.

sorry for mammoth post, just wanted some inspiration because I'm feeling quite down about it. I'm missing fruit so much and apparently it's all for nothing.

Sharkadder · 10/02/2011 16:21

headfairy, I was just reading IPD earlier and it says that 'even a bite of cake' can totally derail you so I think your mum is right :(

If you slip up, even just one potato could bump you out of ketosis (where you are burning fat), and if it happens often then your metabolism will be confused and hanging on to all the weight it can.

Are you using lactofree/soya milk?

headfairy · 10/02/2011 16:25

argh, just what I didn't want to hear. Or did perhaps? It might motivate me more. I'm not using lactofree milk, no. I figured that as I only have three cups of tea a day, the amount of milk I have will not take me over the 20g I'm trying to stick to. Or at least not much. Just how many carbs is in a splash of milk?

headfairy · 10/02/2011 16:26

sorry, shark, meant to say thanks to you :o

What's IPD?

BerylStreep · 10/02/2011 16:27

Are you drinking lots of water? Really really lots?

I think that can help. (Not that I am in a position to give advice - still around the 88kg mark).

Changing to caffeine free tea might help - Zoe Harcombe says that caffeine causes your body to release insulin - we don't want that. Grin

Also, if you are having bread, some of your weight could be water retention if you are intolerant to wheat. Solution - cut out bread and drink lots of water.

TBH I think the cheats could be undoing all your work - the point of low carb is that you convert your body from being a glucose burning engine, to a fat burning one. If you are having cheats, no matter how small, it is the equivalent of putting diesel in a petrol car - it gets all confused and doesn't like it much.

headfairy · 10/02/2011 16:33

thanks Beryl, that's confirmed it for me then. No more cheats. The kids tea time is the worst, I keep telling myself that pinching one chip won't kill but I guess it does.

I'm not having caffeine free tea, can't stand the stuff, hence I'm trying to keep to just 3 cups a day, perhaps I should go down to 2 a day. I did when I was pg.

Sharkadder · 10/02/2011 16:34

Sorry to be the bearer of potentially bad news :(

IPD is 'neris and India's idiot-proof diet', which has a phase one which is pretty much identical to atkins/south beach/other LC diets.

Milk is verboten but cream is allowed. I think milk is way more carby than cream but am not sure exactly as don't have any milk to hand!

Lots of LC diets allow berries in phase two - if you're desperate for fruit maybe start in phase two? I don't know how much you have to lose though. But stuff like apple pie and bread and potatoes is the kiss of death for ketosis I think - certainly it was for me :(

headfairy · 10/02/2011 16:35

However, I do have a flatter tummy so it can't be all bad :o

Must must must drink more water though. Trapped in my office with stupidly tight deadline this arvo so not likely to day!

Sharkadder · 10/02/2011 16:38

Oh and re: caffeine, I was ADDICTED and have kicked the habit. Drinking roobios tea with vanilla instead which smells lush and drinks okay. First few days were hideous, got headaches and everything, but feel fine now and more awake in the mornings!

Good luck though, I know how discouraging it is to make such an effort for so long and not see a loss - or worse, see a gain. I've just started losing again after stalling myself really badly with over-consumption of 'allowed' stuff (fake chocolate mostly).

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/02/2011 18:46

headfairy - if you're regularly cheating, then you're doing the worst of two worlds - eating high fat and higher carbs.

Also - there's a lot of dairy in your diet. Some people do find that dairy can be a problem for them.

There's not much salad/green veg in your diet either. How many carbs are you eating daily, and where are they coming from? There is no advantage in going below 20g carbs a day, apparently.

headfairy · 10/02/2011 19:06

BIWI I know. You're absolutely right Stupidly I've been ignoring the fact that when I lost so much weight last summer by low carbing I was also bfing 5-6 times a day so that gave me a mega boost on the weight loss front.

The biggest problem I have is meals at work. While I can take stuff in, I do have limited cooking/reheating facilities. Hence I end up with the tuna mayo lettuce wraps quite a lot. Or soups (which I usually add cream to to make them more filling)

I do have a salad at least once a day, and if I'm at home I'll have green veg with my main meal - last night was a steak with green beans. Today's green veg intake was from the lettuce wraps. Should I be doing more?

I'm beginning to think my problem is with tea - I'm gutted because it's been a good way to divert my taste buds from their need for sugar. A cup of earl grey with some milk seems to work, but maybe I'm just topping up my sugar levels. The problem is my mouth just feels yuk from so many eggs and cheesey things. Perhaps I need to start carrying around a toothbrush and clean my teeth after a meal :o I would normally have an apple or something similar to cleanse my palate (poncetastic phrase but can't think of any other way of putting it)

CointreauVersial · 10/02/2011 19:57

Custardo, the soup I made recently was cauliflower and stilton; looking at the ingredients I can't believe it can be high in carbs:

1 onion
1 clove of garlic
Soften in olive oil, then add :
1.5 litres of water
1 bayleaf
1 large cauliflower, in florets
(1 potato, which I left out)
Simmer for 15 mins, then remove the bayleaf then add:
3 tbsp creme fraiche
250g stilton, crumbled (or use cheddar)
Then liquidise

This makes 6 portions, it's really comforting!

FreeButtonBee · 10/02/2011 20:09

Mega sweet tooth today. Arse. Back on wagon this evening.

Dinner is roasted cod, roasted leeks, steamed kale and tartare sauce. Lots of veggies. Waiting for dh to get in from swimming so have had a piece of cheese and peanut butter to keep me going.

Sharkadder · 10/02/2011 20:33

I am getting properly sick of sausages :(

My 'morning weight' today was 11st 7.8lbs, which I was massively chuffed about, but now I am just thinking 'biscuits'. I think perhaps because I am bored and they are my go-to boredom snack?

Getting grumpy at all the adverts for heart-shaped chocolates!

Dinner today was sausages, reheated celeriac dauphinoise and broccoli. Lunch was a chacuterie(sp?) plate and a salad.

Just had a vision of a sort of 'mini pizza' - slices of salami with cheese and a slice of pepper on top, then baked in a hot oven til they are melty/crispy - do you think that would work?
