New Thread for Lo Carbers/non-carbers, etc

WhereamI · 07/02/2011 16:31

Old lo-carb thread was 'too big' and wouldn't let me post this. It's for a almond meal pancake - I find one is really filling (I have it with total yoghurt and blueberries) and leave the mix in the fridge to have another next day.

Ingredients:
?1 cup almond flour
?2 eggs
?1/4 cup water (for puffier pancakes, you can use sparkling water)
?2 T oil
?1/4 teaspoon salt
?1 T sweetener
Preparation:
Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes. I like to use a nonstick pan with a little oil. The only real difference is that they won't "bubble" on top the same way as regular pancakes. Flip them when the underside is brown.

Yield: Six 4-inch pancakes

Nutritional Information: Each pancake has 1 gram effective carbohydrate, plus 2 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 155 calories.

I have just had kippers and poached eggs for breakfast. Am feeling full of renewed vigour and determination after my crap weekend fail. Grin

FreeButtonBee · 08/03/2011 10:36

Good plan system. I agree that I feel much better eating consistently this way.

3/4 lb off this morning so we are back moving down again. feels like I've been losing the same 2 lbs for ages now. But (a) PMT and (b) booze. I am going to have to get (b) under control. Bah!

systemsaddict · 08/03/2011 11:01

Thanks FBB. and your post reminds me I forgot about b) booze; if I complete my 6 week plan and am still stalled, that will have to be the next thing to go...

halfcaffodils - I'm eating fresh mackerel and salad at this very moment! DD1 and I are the mackerel addicts in our house; the rest of the family walk around holding their noses.

Well, it's pancake day today!! There should be some rules, if you're going to have a pancake:

  1. Do it properly (no poncing about)!
  1. Enjoy every mouthful!
  1. Don't look back and feel guilty about it!

Lent begins tomorrow....I like your approach systemsaddict - very disciplined.

FreeButtonBee · 08/03/2011 13:36

Yes, booze is a killer. I don't eat shit when drunk or (much) when hungover - but knocking back the wine isn't exactly helping.

Breakfast was some throat sweets (bad)
Lunch was skinny chicken burrito - I even said no to extra tomato relish today which I don't always do.
Snack will be a plain yoghurt.

Dinner will be mostly pancakes. I am not giving up that pleasure. However, in a bid to not pig out I am going to follow vaguely HArcombe diet rules which say if you eat carbs, reduce the fat as low as possible. So I won't be piling on the cream but will have sugar and lemon. And I might even have pasta for my dinner. Obv this experience could well back-fire dramatically on the scales later this week but worth a shot!

Getting so demoralised.

i am struggling with the food atm. I don't want any more bloody bacon or pork. I don't fancy steak without chips and I am craving PASTRY! I have started to add in the 'slippery slope' foods - acorn squash, too many nuts, too much greek yog and cream, onions - because I can't face another lump of meat and salad Sad Holding off on the berries atm as I know once I start I won;t stop.

I felt quite dizzy and ill this morning, very pale and wash-out looking and spots FFS! Spots? I'm 46!

And it's so slow. I keep thinking 'well it's 12lbs!' But I'm still 2 lbs over my starting weight last time and I was HUGE then Sad

And running? Don't make me laugh - I nearly died last night I was so breathless and unfit.

Still....keep on keeping on.

FellatioNelson · 08/03/2011 14:34

But Orm it doesn't really matter if you have those from time to time! Your loss will be slower, but you will still lose, and if it helps you stick to low-carbing then have them! so long as you don't start including all fruit, and sneaking in portions of baked beans or sweetcorn etc, you'll be fine. Better to go softly doftly than to be too hardline and then bale out every few days because it's too tough, surely?

I find that claggy mouth feel after days of nothing but protein and fat, and nothing fresh tasting or crunchy is the hardest thing to get through.

I sometimes juice a lemon or a lime (or half and half) and mix it into some double cream with splenda. It tastes nice and sharp and fresh and hits the spot without being too carby.

I'm also a big fan of those Dr Oetker's crackers with the seeds on. They are about 7g of carb each I think, but one every few days is a godsend!

Ormirian · 08/03/2011 14:38

Thanks fell.

I am getting so many more side-effects and none of the energy that I had before. But that was then and this is now so I have to stop comparing.

Sesame ryvita are quite low too - I do resort to them sometimes but am trying to be good.

halfcaffodils · 08/03/2011 14:53

Yes I really missed crunchy things too. I have gone for walnuts/brazil nuts (especially a few in salads so I don't get carried away eating the bag!) celery, and the Atkins crispbread. I am a non-pork eater, so have also been exploring the soya alternatives (got fake chorizo, bacon). Fancy some crispy chicken skin too, but haven't done it yet.

halfcaffodils · 08/03/2011 14:54

Has anyone tried a kind of pastry made with soya and/or almond flour? I love pastry!

FellatioNelson · 08/03/2011 14:55

Celery is always useful for loading up with cream cheese or pate etc. No carbs whatseover, and nice and fresh and crunchy.

Ormirian · 08/03/2011 14:59

Celery! Yes i had forgotten that! Good idea.

I find that it's very hard to make 'pastry' with almonds - it doesn't hang together well enough. It makes an OKish sort of crumble. But better later in the diet when you can add oats too.

FreeButtonBee · 08/03/2011 15:35

Tell me about oats? I have been flirting with the Dukan diet thread which seems to use a lot of oat bran and I want it!

Tried the almond pancakes but wasn't in love with the texture. Oat-ish ones would be much better.

I also feel that I am in danger of changing too many things to make this "doable" and wonder if that is stalling me. Might need to have a strict food audit next week and really see where I am cheating round the edges. Damn the dark chocolate

Ho Hum, will struggle on this week and regroup on Monday with that thought in mind.

Ormirian · 08/03/2011 15:37

I would only add them in when I am more or less at my target - they count as low-GI rather than low-carb but I do love them. Along with brown rice and lentils and all those other healthy foods that are so boring when you are on a calorie-counting fat-free diet Grin
