New Thread for Lo Carbers/non-carbers, etc

WhereamI · 07/02/2011 16:31

Old lo-carb thread was 'too big' and wouldn't let me post this. It's for a almond meal pancake - I find one is really filling (I have it with total yoghurt and blueberries) and leave the mix in the fridge to have another next day.

Ingredients:
?1 cup almond flour
?2 eggs
?1/4 cup water (for puffier pancakes, you can use sparkling water)
?2 T oil
?1/4 teaspoon salt
?1 T sweetener
Preparation:
Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes. I like to use a nonstick pan with a little oil. The only real difference is that they won't "bubble" on top the same way as regular pancakes. Flip them when the underside is brown.

Yield: Six 4-inch pancakes

Nutritional Information: Each pancake has 1 gram effective carbohydrate, plus 2 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 155 calories.

snack - left over mince

another snack - celeriac chips

tea - pummelled pork chop topped with melted grated cheese topped with finely diced tomato and fine pepper strips sered with celeriac chips and cheese melted on top

was duper dooper delish

Tortington · 22/02/2011 19:47

crisp - not chips for snack

FreeButtonBee · 23/02/2011 09:42

1/2 lb down this morning; am pleased with that. It's going in the right direction.

Dinner last night was butternut squash soup with cheese, hummus and lettuce on the side. Was v nice actually. The crunchy lettuce meant I didn't miss bread. I love a bit of bread dunked in my soup. Did have some dark choc as well but not going to get too concerned about that.

B: plain nat yog
L: have training so will grab a pret salad
D: lentil and sausage casserole - Obv lentils are not low carb but they are low GI and don't have give your colon a good clean out! I like to eat them once a week.

systemsaddict · 23/02/2011 10:37

Am annoyed - lost 1lb on average last week which I'm v. happy with - then bounced up 2 lb for the past three days, after weeks of consistent losing.

Possible causes include:

  • eating crappy salty carb-filled sausages from the greasy spoon to get me through the day

  • not drinking enough water

  • drinking coffee with cream solidly all day Sunday, rather than once a day as plan allows

  • snacking on peanuts

  • generally, failing to prioritise food and ending up grabbing at quick, instant stuff that does me no good.

Just posting for accountability really.

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 10:40

Right, it's happened. I have NO appetite. Great you'd think but I don't like it. I love food, it's one of the great pleasures in my life. But now when I think of eating it just seems a waste of time and effort and TBH a bit yucky. And IME it doesn't mean I lose the weight any quicker.

The only thing I am enjoying at all is greek yoghurt with splenda, and nuts - and they aren't the best.

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 10:41

And I reek Sad

Trying to drink more water to combat that atm.

BerylStreep · 23/02/2011 11:29

Hi all. Just checking in. Well done to those who are lighter!

I am too scared to go on scales. Sad

FreeButtonBee · 23/02/2011 11:40

Nobody told me I would smell! tell me it's not true.

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 11:51

It can be true sadly. It's supposed to be because your body is producing ketones from burning fat. They should get taken away in your urine but if you aren't drinking enough they come out in sweat and saliva thus making you stinky Grin So the answer is drink lots of water. I normally do but yesterday was a bit hectic. I am drinking it by the bucketload atm.

I didn't notice the smell last time but everyone told me it could happen.

Alternatively I must just be a smelly old woman .

OnlyWantsOne · 23/02/2011 12:02

hey I need to loose 4 stone... so please be honest - tell me how to low carb?

I need some support and a kick in the right direction, im hungry all the time :(

Timbachick · 23/02/2011 13:49

OK... have taken the step and weighed myself.

OMG (I hate that expression but it just sums it up at the mo) ... I am down 1st 7lbs since I last weighed!!!! Shock.

In truth it has been about 2 months since I weighed myself and I know that until I started this paleo eating (carbs only from veggies/fruit) 2.5 weeks ago I was VERY snug in my clothes ... so much so that I had to buy new extra big jeans Sad and had only one other pair of trousers I could wear Sad Sad.

People have started to notice a difference and my skin, hair and nails are all doing better. No blemishes or breakouts that usually happen to me when I diet.

I am sooooooooo happy. Grin

OnlyWantsOne - if you interested in paleo eating (eating like our ancestors ate) then a couple of good books are: The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf (very easy to read and user friendly), The Evolution Diet by Prof. Art De Vany (quick and easy to read) and the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. It all depends how serious you want to be. Because of food intolerances I went the whole way and dropped all wheat/pasta/grain/rice/corn from my diet. I also rarely, if at all, touch dairy anymore. You can suffer withdrawals but it is so worth it.

Sorry for the long post - am just sooooooo happy and motivated. Grin

Timbachick · 23/02/2011 13:51

P.S. am going to start drinking water in a BIG way now .... do not want to be smelly timba Grin

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 13:54

Bloody hell timba Shock

That's amazing! Grin Well down that woman. So pleased for you.

Timbachick · 23/02/2011 13:58

Me again ... OnlyWantsOne - somewhere in this thread (on one of custardo's postings) is a link to her blog which gives a good idea of what low-carb/no-carb eating is all about. Have a look and see what you think.

Protein provides much more satiation than carbs so by eating more protein (meat) you should find that your hunger pangs reduce. I also make sure that I have a huge salad most days and pack my plate with veggies (raw and lightly steamed). My boys, who are not ready to give up carbs ... yet, have rice/pasta/potatoes on their plates as well, I just leave it off mine.

The subject of fruit is one where I find opinion is split - I eat berries and some tropical/citrus fruits everyday - mainly because I love fruit. I do not eat bananas and the more starchy fruits. Some low carbers do not touch fruit - that is up to you and depends, I suppose, on how much the addition of fruit in your diet affects you and any cravings.

The books I mention in my previous post also have websites attached to them: The Primal Blueprint: www.marksdailyapple.com; The Paleo Solution: www.robbwolf.com - tons of info to be had there. Art De Vany has a podcast that you need to pay for so I don't go there!!

I am sure others more knowledgeable than me will be along later to give you masses of fab advice.

Timbachick · 23/02/2011 14:00

Thank you Omirion - I am absolutely buzzing!!! You know that funny bubbling in your stomach when excited .... that's me, that is!!!! Grin Grin Grin

FreeButtonBee · 23/02/2011 14:11

Wow, that's amazing Timba. Mega congrats.

I think I might have to introduce some fruit because I am cheating round the edges with chocolate at the moment, which is obv not providing much in the way of nutrition. Will have to think about that a bit more. The choc isn't doing too much damage to my weight loss but that's not the point really.

Ormirian · 23/02/2011 14:16

If you are going to try fruit, berries, satsumas and melons are the lowest IIRC

FreeButtonBee · 23/02/2011 16:54

hunggrrrryyyyyy

might have to go buy some thing to eat. Want crisps - will try to resist.

managed to steer clear of crisps - had 'fun size' cheese from M&S. Also got the butterscotch sweets they are weird - not sure if I really like them

CointreauVersial · 23/02/2011 20:32

Hello all, hello newbies! Way to go, Timba - it's a great feeling.

Staying firmly on the midweek wagon; recent meals were:

Yesterday:
Breakfast - fruit, greek yogurt and almonds (my standard breakfast; not low-low-carb but fills me up til lunch)
Lunch - dip with raw veggies
Dinner - sausages with courgettes sauted in garlic butter, and broccoli

Today:
Breakfast - as above
Lunch - salad with cold sausage and cheese
Dinner - hot smoked salmon fillet, coleslaw and salad (+ cheeky glass of Rioja, DH made me do it!)

DH is attracting lots of interest at work due to his weight-loss (despite his cheating he has lost about 9lb in the last couple of weeks). All the girls want to know his secret!!

I bought a pack of "sugar-free" creamy caramels in the chemist today; they were lush! A couple of those warded off the post-lunch sweet craving very well.

Tortington · 23/02/2011 22:57

onlywantsone my blog is heeeeeeeeeeere if it's any use

enjoy Sal!

Timba well bloody done on the weightloss

systemsaddict - i wouldn't eat sausages from anywhere where i couldnt read the packet
sausages and burgers are packed out with carby stuff like breadcrumbs and sugar.

d - erm celeriac chips
tea - italian chicken
snack
sugar free lollipop x 2

Timbachick · 23/02/2011 22:57

Thanks everyone - it's such a fab feeling to be on the way down on the weight front and also to be feeling so much more healthy.

I still a way to go with regard to excess weight but I see this as a way of life now. It's not a diet to get from where I am to where I want to be. It is a way of eating/living that suits my body, mind and health.

Some more good news: Got signed off from the Gastro Clinic at the hosptial this afternoon - based on how I am feeling now and my most recent bloodwork. Yippee!!!! Dr (at GP Surgery) is also mega pleased with me - he is one of the few healthcare professionals that are willing to accept that low/no-carbs actually work for people ... quite an enlightened man. Grin Looks like my problems have been caused by ... carbs!!!!

Cointreau - I could live on hot smoked salmon ... it's bloody luverley. Grin
