greenfig Have just watched this and am annoyed really. Lumping all these 'crash' diets together is very misleading. And then they interview this older lady who hates crash diets because her liver/kidneys packed up after taking 30 laxatives a day. hmmph! That wasnt a crash diet that was an eating disorder. Plus the woman on dukan going totally overboard on attack - 9 days instead of 4.

I see the temptation to stay in attack as the weight's falling off and I feel good right now, but I am determined to start cruise tomorrow, sticking to what was recommended for me. Its not like there wont be more protein only days during cruise!

I have always had this idea that high protein diets are unhealthy. And yes I am concerned about the increased gout risk and strain on kidneys and liver etc. I am making sure that I drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day. I have high cholesterol and wouldnt do atkins cos I am scared of all that fat. But I am really starting to wonder about sugar...I feel in control for the first time in 8 years.

greenfig · 27/01/2011 11:45

Yes I didn't hear any mention aside from initial brief rundown of stages of the diet past attack! I would consider long term attack as a crash or fad diet (& wouldn't have done it) but surely the protein/veg/oatbran is super healthy & the fact that it is sustainable & treats can be then factored in make it sensible & realistic not crash? Also it can fit in with life after 1st few days as not overly restrictive & no packets of slush food!
cairns you've overtaken me!! Was up to 9.10 1/4 this am. Had a glass of wine & my cheese quota last night, also pre menstrual.
Today is my 1 p/p day p/wk. I'd say all in all my body is still adjusting. My 1st wk of con. & I have been between 9.8 & 9.11. As you know I have had a few non dukan treats & missed some of the consolidation extras but it hasn't suddenly piled back on as I had worried it might in the early days!

Foreverondiet · 27/01/2011 12:07

Well weight back to 9 13.5 this morning so clearly yesterday was a blip. But today I am eating vegetables (haven't had yet but will eat salad & cottage cheese for lunch).

In respect of the crash diets, I'm not sure, personally my view is that the protein days are pretty hardcore crash dieting and thats every 2nd day for cruise phase. I'm probably going to do 2 protein days a week, and protein and vegetables the other 5 days and see how I go. Will moderate intake of vegetables and will eat protein with every meal but just not sure that all protein days are particular healthy.

greenfig · 27/01/2011 13:02

forever I guess it depends how much & how quickly you want to lose. I did approx 5pv:2pp days p/wk too, always pv at w/es for family meals as I wanted to eat responsibly in front of the children. I would mostly have pp until supper which would be pv, but sometimes had veg soup for lunch too then yog. I also had approx 2 glasses wine a week & occasional slip up. I lost approx 2lbs a week going from 10.11 1/2 mid oct to 9.9 1/2 by Christmas. Others have had faster results by alternate days, I guess you have to decide what works for you & what you're comfortable with.

Foreverondiet · 27/01/2011 14:33

In terms of timing, I guess I want to still be loosing weight. I am now 10 stone. My dukan true weight is 9 stone 6lbs (60kg) - exactly what I was aiming for anyway, so I would like to get to that.

So around another half stone to go. Ideally would like to loose 1.5lbs per week, so would like to get to target by early March - so hopefully just 5 weeks of cruise phase. Will do the consolidation diet for a while though (several months) to take into account all the weight I lost already since October.

I don't miss the carbs, eg bread, cereal, pasta rice. But I do really miss apples (don't really miss other fruit).

cairns · 27/01/2011 14:51

I am another one with the ratio 5pv:2pp and I always pv at the weekend too. I find it easy to have just pp during the day too and veggies at night. I guess that I'd why I have found this ok, although lost a big chunk of weight it has been steady ( which I think is a good thing)

For those missing fruit, rhubarb is i hope allowed if tolerated on pv so i have Bought some fresh rhubarb today, so will have rhubarb and custard for pud (crumble topping for dh) tonight. Can't wait..,,

Foreverondiet · 27/01/2011 16:22

Yes, good point about pp during day and pv in evenings, esp if you stick to the less starchy veggies. Will experiment and see how weight loss goes.

oncemorewithfeeling · 27/01/2011 16:28

Dammit, had some friends over for tea. One brought along little mousse cakes. I didn't want one, but it seemed rude not to.

What am i going to do for social events?

greenfig · 27/01/2011 16:38

oncemore I know EXACTLY what you mean. Was going to say this am but felt I'd already had quite enough to say!! It's another change I've noticed, being a little more discerning about what I eat when out & not just saying 'yes please' & clearing my plate to be polite! However, I can't imagine taking my oatbran & skimmed milk away without feeling slightly potty when everyone else is scoffing croissants etcSmile

Foreverondiet · 27/01/2011 16:41

I find social occasions very hard.

In some way "tea" is easy, you just say, I'm on a very strict diet, they look lovely but will be strong and decline / leave for DH/DD/DS etc, I will have a can of diet coke / herbal tea etc etc.

Whats harder is going to friends for a meal. In a restuarant you could order say grilled chicken and veggies, but when going to friends for dinner you have to eat something.

Not sure whether its harder when its plated or when all the food is on the table.

If plated you have to ask for small portions and ask to avoid anything really bad. If on table eat slowly and drink loads of water. Either way avoid dessert.

oncemorewithfeeling · 27/01/2011 20:43

I dunno, I find it really embarrassing to say 'I am on a diet'. Not sure why but guess I have never done it...
Plus this diet...I can see the Hmm looks I'd get: 'you are not eating fruit!!' In a bigger setting I imagine no one would notice...

cairns · 27/01/2011 21:11

This is an interesting debate to tell or not up tell. well the only person who 'knows' I am on a diet has been dh. Others have just noticed I have lost weight as I find it v v hard to tell people as it just brings a lot more questions, comments etc and tbh I would have found that demoralising having to explain. Bizarrely I have been clever with food when I have had visitors ( even foodie mil) and when out with friends (skinny latte no cake thanks! ) etc etc that it hasn't been so bad. Menu planning has been my friend when entertaining. I have had the inevitable slip up when having dinner at friends houses etc but I just make sure not to go overboard and to have a pp day the next day.

Foreverondiet · 27/01/2011 21:28

I have found easier to stick to diet if completely open, in my case easy as no embarassment as am loosing baby weight, and he's only 9 months old. I looked very fat, however now that I am 10 stone rather than 12 5 am getting comments like why do you need to be on diet?? I just say that I haven't reached my goal, and some of clothes still too tight. Smile

I have posted progress on facebook so all my friends know - post a diet related comment around once a month. Makes it harder to "fail". All my collegues know so I couldn't eat any of the snacks at work or they'd tell me off!!! Wink

In terms of the fruit, wouldn't explain tha wouldn't be that fussed about eating an apple if that could avoid me eating a piece of cake, would try and go for herbal tea etc first. Grin

greenfig · 28/01/2011 09:47

Morning ladies! hope you've all had a good weigh in, an extra 1/4lb for me Sad despite a day of pp & a big walk Hmm
Went to Zumba for the 1st time last night which was fab! Really good fun & quite hard work. Am out for a friends b'day tonight so was planning on using celebration meal, will wait to see what's on offer & may hold back after a few slow result days! Have a good weekend all.

laura3ap · 28/01/2011 10:01

Can I join you? Ok, I've got the book, I've bought the oatbran and I am ready to start on Tuesday. PLEASE HELP ME ...what do I need to buy when I do 'the shop' this weekend? Plan to do 3 days attack - lunches needs to be cold (or microwavable at work). Look forward to all your wise words!

cairns · 28/01/2011 10:57

Morning all , still the same here which is great as only 4 lbs or so off target weight. Have a lovely weekend all . if it is totm greenfig I am sure that extra lb will drop off, enjoy the party.

Highly recommend rhubarb and custard comfort food it was delish and a change from yoghurts as pud.

cairns · 28/01/2011 11:03

Welcome laura Advice is make sure you have a full fridge you don't want to get hungry with this. Lots of ff yoghurts, ff cottage cheese, cold meats, crab sticks, eggs and then chicken, fish etc. Make sure you have spices in to flavour food. I love chicken tikka with a mint yoghurt dip for pp, and greenfigs Tom yum soups. There are lots on here who have just finished attack I am sure they will have lots of tips.

Foreverondiet · 28/01/2011 11:19

Ideas for lunch at work:

Cold salmon or tuna steak.
Sliced turkey breast or similar low fat cold meat.
Yoghurt.
hard boiled egg.
Sliced tofu.
If you can afford it sashimi (am going to have one day as special treat, there is an itsu near work).

My weight this morning still 10 stone. Thats ok, but means that I didn't really loose all that weight really in attack. But still will be very happy with 2lbs a week on average so as long as I lose with the next 10 days will be ok with this.

Done a spin class and swim this morning.

oncemorewithfeeling · 28/01/2011 12:38

Erm...have decided after much umming and ahhing that I will have one extra attack day today. Mainly because I am spending day with a friend tomorrow and I would feel too weird doing pp.

Welcome laura. Things I am enjoying at the moment:
Made oeufs en cocotte with smoked salmon and quark for breakfast. (previously had boiled eggs each morning)
Miso soup with sliced chicken breast for lunch. (just boil the sliced chicken in the miso- they come in cuppa soup typpe sachets)
Like sardines in spring water. Fry in a little chilli oil and add lemon.
Tuna and cottage cheese

You need flavourings: I find oriental stuff nice with pure meat - teppanyaki marinade is really nice. Also: lemons, chilli flakes, garlic, ginger, chinese five spice, fish sauce, tamari, coriander, cumin, capers, mustard, nice vinegars ff yog or fromage frais. Then you can marinade meat in diff ways. I ahve also bought sweetener and flavourings to make nice yoghurts out of fat free plain yoghurt. So far the lemon one is lush, but the vanilla extract one surprisingly minging!

I am precooking marinaded chicken breast and have ready in the fridge for snacks. Could even dip into something yoghurty mixed with herbs/garlic? Also bought some crab sticks on offer for first time. They were a bit hmmm. I think needs something punchy with it. Maybe treat myself to some wasabi and pickled ginger in a week or so.

A

oncemorewithfeeling · 28/01/2011 13:05

Umm its teriyaki not tepanyaki marinade I have.

cairns · 28/01/2011 19:30

Ooh I have found a new 'friend' why I have never attempted it before I don't know but hey you learn. Celeriac, dukan allowed and low carb and reasonably priced as in season. I have just made some celeriac mash (I added half potato to dh's) to accompany a casserole and it was delicious. I have found a recipe for celeriac chips ( with a bit of curry powder added, although will have to minus oil) that I fancy attempting on my next pv day with either steak/ lean burger.

One nice side effect of this diet lark is I am experimenting and trying new things/ recipes all healthy and fat free which is great!

laura3ap · 28/01/2011 20:20

Thank you so much for all your tips...really quite excited now!

marmalade32 · 29/01/2011 05:53

Well, lost another 5 pounds this morning - very pleased as weighed myself in the week and had actually put on a pound ! I spoke to a friend though who said the fact I had eaten and had a large glass of water an hour earlier and needed a wee probably accounted for that. I had a skimmed milk latte yesterday afternoon - I felt sick beyond belief ! I know some posters have been saying that dairy is making them nauseaus but I thought that as I still had milk in my coffee and 2 yoghurts a day it wouldn;t be that bad. Maybe the milk was off..I'm definitely going to try the rhubarb and custard, sounds lovely and warming. Also Miso Soup - I was wondering about whthere I could have that. Once more I've got some orange flower water in the cupboard somewhere, do you think that would work with plain yoghurt ?

oncemorewithfeeling · 29/01/2011 15:36

Hello, waving at everyone

So this morning I am down another 1.1kgs. I ate like a horse yesterday because I wanted a cookie in the afternoon, but 1.1 down!!! The day before I had gone up 300g.

Sadly lapsed today, again its the social stuff that kills me. Had a spanish hot chocolate and a churros Shock.

Despite the lapse I am doing cruise today.I will have to do more social things that are not bonding over food.

WeeBitWobbly · 29/01/2011 19:58

Saying hello, on day four of attack, one more to go.
Can I ask what brand yoghurts you recommend? I know fruit added non fat are a no-no! Almost had a weightwatchers yoghurt until the strawberry pieces were staring up at me!!
