So today is D day! Diet starts today, I have my first slimming world class tonight and i am feeling quite motivated. I think I probably have around 3 stones to lose, but i would be happy to even lose 2. I just feel fat and unhealthy and have never been this big before!

So today is day 1 of sorting myself out! Just wondered if anyone else was starting today too, not just slimming world, but any thing, and wanted to have somewhere to chat, swap ideas, or get some moral support?

dita - the innocent veg pots are lovely Smile, I think

upsydaisysexstylist · 30/09/2010 21:21

Arrgh, fell off the diet wagon making ginerbread men with ds1, used treacle instead of syrup ( have badly stocked cupboards) and licked very sticky dough off my fingers, then tried product as well. Had blooming cut out 2 small biscuits for me instead of great big man. Back on tomorrow.

Melty · 30/09/2010 21:53

One mad evening will not hurt long term. Just don't do the same thing tomorrow.
Stick to 5 syns. Youll be back on track in no time.
Erm, how many did you scoff?

upsydaisysexstylist · 30/09/2010 21:58

The two small biscuits, it was the dough and the oranges and lemons we were using for mouths that found their way into my mouth.

littlemefi · 30/09/2010 22:18

I had one of those innocent veg pots last night THEN looked up the syns, the lentil dhal one was 7 and a half syns, and the others are at least 6 or 7 each!
Nice but not that nice iykwim!

Melty · 30/09/2010 22:50

Upsydaisy, dont beat yourself up. That sounds relatively minor in terms of syns.
Just chalk it up to a blip.
Get back on the plan tomorrow. You'll be fine. You have to consume a hell of a lot more than that over the course of the week to put weight on.

Littlemefi, there has been a bit of debate about the syns that SW uses. Sometimes it doesnt make sense. (ie the brand name comes up as 10 syns, but using the nutritional info gived 3 syns)
Theres only 2 g fat per 100g in the Mexican sweet potato chili. Its got corn flour and coconut sugar in it as synnable items, but there cant be too much in a pot that size. Did you look up using the nutritional values or using the name?
Same with the Lentil Dahl one, 2.6g fat per 100g

So I wouldnt make a habit of having them, but they are relatively low calorie, filling and warm at this time of the year.

upsydaisysexstylist · 30/09/2010 22:57

I have a really good book on diets, called lighten up, which points out that sometimes you need to make the least bad choice in terms of eating and the veg pots are nutritionally sound, if maybe a bit more energy dense than SW deems good for us.
I am sceptical of the value of diet foods, especially bloody mullerlight, do they have flipping shares in them and would rather syn olive oil and butter occasionally than use things with lots of ingredients I don't recognise. Rant over

Melty · 30/09/2010 23:07

I have to say, I agree.
I use olive oil, but I use a spray bottle and a non stick pan, so dont use very much-about a half teaspoon max.
I think Fry lite is the devils work really!

Can someone syn a packet of those ready made pasta packets that are meant to be free on green(personally I think they are vile) using the nutritional values instead of the name?
Just as a scientific exercise Smile

I actually like the SW concept, just not so keen on all the processed foods that are "free".

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 01/10/2010 07:09

I got a couple of the Innocent ones for DH, glad I wasn't planning on having them with so many syns in, you really would think they would be low. Co sultant yesterday was going on about Batchelors . According to her Batchelors are the only ones who provide SW with the nutritional info without being up with milk and butter. So with all the other brands their syns are 'made up as directed' but SW can 't be sure that without milk and butter they would be free. I didn't listen as I don't plan on eating them but it all sounded like a marketing ploy for Batchelors.

Lulumaam · 01/10/2010 07:31

am avoiding processed food, even syn free ones.. although am having some quorn and using frylight but keeping away from packet food.

stuck to 6 syns yesterday and very few carbs as just felt so bloated still. but people telling me now they can tell i have lost weight so that's good..

got a big weekend with the family for my niece's birthday, not sure how that will work ,but if i eat well most of the time and have a few treats, i'm not going to sabotage 3 weeks of really good non cheating behaviour !

ditavonteesed · 01/10/2010 07:47

I must admit that when I did sw I ate a lot of processed stuff, seem to be eatring less on ww, those veg pots acxtually only come out at about 2.5 points so reallly good on my diet. think they might be just what I need after a long walk in the rain.

I am really bloatd today, stomach looks like i am preggers and hurts a lot. I ate really well yesterday so don't know what is going on.
lul, how ab9out you pre syn a couple of treats that you know you will fancy and allow yourself those.

ElizabethWakefield · 01/10/2010 09:51

Morning everyone, how are we all today?

Like Lulu I am also trying to avoid processed, packet or ready made food, although making everything from scratch every single night is starting to annoy me a bit, although I think it is more to do with how I am feeling this week more than anything.

Have the day off work tomorrow to tidy up an prepare for tomorrow, have DD's birthday party in the afternoon, big group for dinner, then 6 kids for a sleepover! DD is so excited, I am dreading it Grin

Have started the day with weetabix and milk (healthy extra a and b) planned to have a banana with it, but there was only one left and it was all gooey inside Sad

I am hoping to burn off loads of fat today with frantic tidying etc. Still feel awful, however and would love to just crawl back into bed Grin

OP posts:
findingtheRialme · 01/10/2010 10:29

morning. I have lost 5lb this weekSmile, though through poorliness rather than effort I'm afraid.

Am setting my goal for October at getting 8lb off, and that will take me neatly to my 2 stoneSmile

Just have to wait til the shopping comes at bedtime now... but i didn't buy myself anything from the bakery when i went to get DS3s cornish pasty (well, they do have veg inWink) for his packed lunch at grannies after playgroup. He was much happier this morning. Maybe we should knock nursery school on the head for a bit, even playgrousp are Ofsted regulated aren't they? So he should be getting as much out of it as they expect him to at nursery?

Lulumaam · 01/10/2010 15:43

hi elizabeth !

great weight loss, ria.

after all my smuggery, I am craving Chinese food with every fibre of my being. I cannot bear another farking turkey rasher Blush

upsydaisysexstylist · 01/10/2010 16:45

Lulu I have had a chinese takeaway on this diet, not too bad on the syns if you stick to boiled rice and one main with no batter on oh and no prawn crackers either.

Have had a crap day, tax credits terminated our claim because I reported a change in circumstances to report, which I bloody well did. First I knew was when checked account balance this am. Sorted now,but had to run round transferring money to cover direct debits due out at beginning of week. Am cross with myself really as have not budgetted outgoings properly since ds2 arrived in June, usually have buffer amount in account.

Lulumaam · 01/10/2010 16:59

thanks psa, i've had a look and chicken in black bean with boiled rice is not too awful syn wise, so, i don't feel too bad, but i've just eaten a bag of caramel snack a jacks Blush

i suppose almost 3 weeks in, and no cheating , i can have this without undoing the weight loss in one fell swoop

also,i suppose if i give in to my cravings, i can start again tomorrow, rather than thinking oh, sod it, i'll just give up

DontCallMeBaby · 01/10/2010 17:00

I think the syn value for Innocent veg pots is complete bollocks, tbh. I had a dhal one for dinner after my first weigh-in, and looked it up ... then looked at the ingredients. The only thing that could be synnable is coconut sugar, well down the list of ingredients. If you do it on nutritional value it comes out high because you can only say that it had ONE free ingredient in it, when most of the ingredients are free (vegetables!)

I think you have to be sensible about it all - Muller Lights are 100+ calories each, eat enough of them and you aren't going to lose weight!

Lamb dhansak from the magazine for me and DH this evening, not for DD though, need to find something for her.

Lulumaam · 01/10/2010 17:03

meant to say upsa, sorry about your crappy news.

yes, if you ate unlimited muller lights, you'd definitley be in trouble

Melty · 01/10/2010 17:06

Oh, I have a lovely noodle recipe from the magazine. Its absloutely gorgeous.
I'll out it up later on this evening. If you put chicken in it, its free on EE.

You can make syn free egg fried rice, and you can use some of the stir fry sauces from blue dragon for only a few syns.
Cant remember off the top of my head. (I'm sure someone can oblige)

Theres a few good recipes here too.
Slimming world suitable recipes

And try here too:
Chinese

findingtheRialme · 01/10/2010 17:49

chow mein is a good choice isn't it? (sadly I like it with satay sauce, which is probably not)

I fear that kind of thing from tax credits upsa, if they stopped ours we would be stuffed (DH has had so many operations and resulting time off work in the last 6 years that our savings wouldn't cover any sort of emergencySad, plus he isn't working full time because he can't cope with the physical demands of his job. If it is not good news from these tests I will be finding work as I'm tired of being skint!)

we (the boys anyway) have DS1s rogan josh for their tea. Don't think I'll be eating, have stomach pains and feel faint, don't think curry is the answer!

candyfluff · 01/10/2010 18:58

having a bad day today i fell out with my mum and then i got a call this afternoon that my darling nanna had died of heart failure
i tend to comfort eat and ive just stuffed myself with dinner plus 5 chocolate bars and 2 bags of crisps

shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

findingtheRialme · 01/10/2010 19:17

Sad candyfluff, take care of yourself. so sorry for your loss.

upsydaisysexstylist · 01/10/2010 20:28

Candy just be kind to yourself for now, no beating yourself up. Sorry for your loss

Melty · 02/10/2010 09:30

Oh Candy, sorry to hear your sad news.
Just look after yourself.

SW Oriental Vegetable noodles: Serves 4
Free on green.

2 garlic cloves
1tsp ground ginger
6 spring onions
200g pack mangetout
200g can sweetcorn
200g can water chestnuts
200g can bamboo shoots
1 tsp dried chilli flakes
4 tbs vegatable stock
3 tbs dark soy sauce
1/4 tsp sweetener (optional)
250g pack dried egg noodles.
3oz cashew nuts (6 syns if not a healthy extra)
1 Peel and crush garlic. Cut spring onions into 1in pieces. Thinly slice the mangetout
Drain water chestnuts, sweetcorn and bamboo shoots.
2 Put garlic, ginger, spring onions, chilli, soy sauce and sweetener into wok/deep frying pan. Heat gently for 4-5 mins.
3 Turn heat up to high and add the mangetout, sweetcorn, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots. Stir fry for 4-5 mins until vegetables are just tender.
4 Meanwhile prepare the noodles according to packet instructions. Drain and add to the vegetables in the frying pan over a high heat.
5 Stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat. Sprinkle over the cashew nuts. Add a squeeze of lime and serve.

I tend to do this without the cashew nuts, and I have taken to adding chicken (stir fry gently at the beginning, or poach in stock first, then slice and add) on and EE day.
Also, I only add 2 nests of noodles for 4 people because it makes sooo much.

Very tasty, very filling, and again, very cheap to make.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 02/10/2010 09:46

Candy so sorry Sad I agree with the others, this is the time to be very kind to yourself.

Upsy, sorry about the tax credits.

Chinese takeaways do fit in with SW. I have had chicken chop suey with boiled rice and chicken chow mein since being on it. For this to work long term I think you do need to build things like this in or your deprivation levels go to high with a bigger chance of just saying sod it and not doing it. I try not to eat much processed food overall but do fit in things like Chinese takeaway, Gu pudding, curry or whatever I feel I need to make me feel 'normal'. That's why SW have the syns, so you can do this so I feel it would be rude not to!

Friends came round last night for Mexican night. I did meat and veg chilli's, salsa, boiled rice, potato wedges, coleslaw, tortilla wraps and crisps, cheese, sour cream and total greek yogurt. I had chilli, rice, coleslaw and salsa and was absolutely stuffed using about 2 syns. So I thought I had better have some more after they went and had a flake for good measure. A good night was had by all with the added bonus of the DCs playing murder in the dark and someone knocking DS's wobbly tooth out by accident. It wasn't good for about 5 mins as a lot of blood but job done and he is pleased this morning now it is put and the tooth fairy just about remembered to come.
