encyclogirl - yes ? it?s definitely a case of comparing the ?new me? with the ?old me?? but I really should get it into perspective that I have another two stone to go before I can stop. That is A LOT. I think of it as, rather than having come a long way already (?woohoo?, etc), it?s more that every day I have less, in total, to lose. Every day is day number 1 of The Diet. Stops me pigging out and treating myself when I?ve done particularly well of a week. But I realise my life is pretty much totally joyless? Grin

Justaminute - I read an article that vitamin C wakes you up more than caffeine. Are you a big fruit-eater? If you?re feeling tired, would you be able to reach for a Satsuma or orange? The length of time it takes to peel/clean it of pith makes it into more of an eating ?event? than just grabbing a cake or a biscuit and wolfing it before your stomach has a chance to realise you?ve eaten something. I don?t like eating citrus fruit, though, apart bizarrely from lemons (but then I drink vinegar). But citrus fruit doesn?t have the vitamin C monopoly, I think?

Iluvcake I too hate Monday morning post-weekend cravings. After big run yesterday I gave myself a treat of some low-fat pretzels as a mini carb-binge. Sitting at work watching colleagues eat chocolate chip digestives at this very moment. Aargh!

Hello Mamafigaro/Sobbadan. ½ stone is def doable. I think my metabolism may be a little out of whack and I seem incapable of losing a pound a week now. It really should be as simple as depriving yourself of/burning off 3,500 calories a week (3.5k calories = 1lb of fat) and ta-da! One pound off just through eating 500 calories under you basic metabolic rate or burning 500 calories a day for a week. I don?t know whether something?s up with my hormones and my water retention?s all over the shop, or whether I?m eating more than I realise. Ho hum. ONWARDS!

justaminute · 15/11/2010 13:08

Vinegar? really Undertone? I've drunk some pretty rank cider in my time but vinegar Confused

dinkystinky · 15/11/2010 13:33

You fell off the threads I'm on.

Welcome back Slobba/MammaF - hope you get back in the zone soon.

ILuv - am with you on the concerted exercise push. Had medical through work today and am the same size and weight as I was 3 years ago which is a good thing I think - just need that final push to get to my maintaining weight goal.

Undertone - I'm SO PROUD OF YOU! Bet you look favulous. Your runining is going brilliantly. And glad you managed to join a gym - once you find an exercise regime that works for you and that you enjoy its brilliant isnt it?

dinkystinky · 15/11/2010 13:35

P.s undertone - I've never been able to lose at 1lb a week. I tend to plateau for ages and then suddenly see a loss. I think its because of my muscle mass effecting my metabolism. Try and see it that way Wink

Undertone · 15/11/2010 15:01

justaminute - yeah. I'm weird. It's not like I have a whole glassful of the stuff... but maybe a swig out of the bottle every now and then!! I'm also mad for pickled things.

dinky I DO look fab!

I think it's gone to my head, though. I bought a couple of pairs of skin-tight cropped black shiny lycra running leggings, as they're much comfier/easier to wash and dry than my old jersey baggy full-leg joggers. I bet they look HIDEOUS from behind, but the fact that I'm willing to wear them out of doors at all is quite a mad confidence boost in itself.

I feel rubbish if I miss exercise for more than one day in a row, so I really hope it'll be a regular part of my routine for the rest of my life.

dinkystinky · 15/11/2010 16:20

Undertone - its fine to train each day as long as you're cross training and stretching out those muscles, and using them, in different ways. Otherwise you risk injury from over training. So try and mix up what you do at the gym and include in some stretch work and strength work along with all that cardio you're doing and you'll see a real change to your body shape really quickly.

Undertone · 15/11/2010 16:49

Dinky - I'm lucky in that the gym I go to throws in an hour's personal training each month. The trainer I have been assigned is a mean harpy very focused individual, and she's got her beady eyes on me and what I'm up to. At the moment, Monday, Wednesday and Friday are my resistance training days, and I tack on 20-25 mins cardio after my programme, and I either have Tuesdays/Thursdays off or go swimming/do more gentle cardio.

I tried aqua-aerobics last week. Not sure if I'll go again - for an explanation see here

Slobbadan · 16/11/2010 06:22

Undertone - i wish i could stay as focused as you! I seem to have no will power to last, but i do know i need stick it out or i will be fat forever.

My exercise plan at the min is alternating yoga and shredding, so after work today i should be shredding as i done 30 mins yoga yesterday. Also my childrens school changed location and instead of a 5-10 min walk to school its now a brisk 20-25mins each way and i have to do this 3 times a day on 3 days as dc2 atteneds playgroup at the same setting, so i will walk myself thin.

dinkystinky · 16/11/2010 09:51

If they have pilates or yoga or body balance at your gym on your rest days/gentle cardio days Undertone give them a go - helps stretch out all that lovely muscle mass you're creating and will make you feel really good after doing it too.

Slobbadan - my MIL walked off 2 stone in a year! You can do it.

Slobbadan · 17/11/2010 10:50

Well tis wednesday and im still in the zone!! Feel really positive so fingers crossed i stick to it.

Will have to give exercise a miss for a few days as i have some kind of trapped nerve/pulled muscle in my back and its really painfull. But still got the walking to and from school so not all bad.

Been good food wise too.

How is every one getting on?

justaminute · 17/11/2010 11:18

I'm in the zone with you Slobbadan Smile.

I dusted off the Shred last night . I took my measurements too as last time I did the Shred I lost inches rather than pounds. Sadly I'm nearly back to where I was pre Shred days. No great surprise, just don't like seeing it in black & white.

iluvcake · 17/11/2010 20:24

Hi all.

justaminute, well done for starting the shred! I'm feeling much more toned already after a week.

Slobbadan, sorry to hear about your back. That doesn't sound great. Hope it's better soon-so you can join us shreddingGrin!

I am doing pretty well. Very good day yesterday. Ok today but bought a lindt chocolate bar and some oreosBlush. Have eaten half the choc bar-it's dark 70% though so I don't feel as bad . I bought it as I felt like giving myself a little reward with my coffee-telling myself I would only eat two squares-stupid, stupid, stupid. I should KNOW by now that I can't do that! Have also had two oreos.

I have done the shred dvd tonight though and haven't eaten yet so may just have some healthy soup.

thedogwalker · 17/11/2010 20:32

Can I join your group, got a 3 month DS and need to lose the pregnancy weight.

By the way what is the shred you keep talking about? Sounds very interesting?

iluvcake · 17/11/2010 21:53

Hello thedogwalker! WelcomeSmile.

The shred is a dvd called "The 30 day shred" by Jillian Micheals of "The Biggest Loser USA" fame. You do it(or try to) every day but it's only 20mins!

I got my dvd on Amazon.

dinkystinky · 17/11/2010 21:59

Thedogwalker - welcome to our group and congrats on your 3 month old DS. Please take the weight loss slowly and steadily (with sleep deprivation and everything else that comes with a little baby, you need to be kind to yourself) - aim for around 1lb a week, focus on portion size and drinking lots of water, eating healthily and gentle exercise (I really wouldnt recommend doing the shred at 3 months post natal - series 2 and series 3 have a lot of jumping moves in it which will not do your pelvic floor any good - I'd ease in with lots of walking and specifically targeted post natal exercise and when you find those easy move on to the mainstream stuff).

iluvcake · 17/11/2010 22:14

Very good advice dinky. It might actually be a bit much three months after having a baby!

Undertone · 17/11/2010 23:02

'ello all.

Trying to save money and not buy pre-cooked deli meat for my 2x a day salad habit. This means I do mad shit like (as now) staying up past bedtime so I can take my ham out of the oven in a bit to slice for lunch tomorrow Hmm

I'm in the gym 6.15 to 8pm, so I don't get home til 8.30pm. 9pm today, as trains were up the spout in south London. I'm finding it a huge hassle to juggle cooking big joints of meat at random times in the week!

But I fucking refuse to pay £2 for 150g of roast beef. It's this or resorting to road kill.

Slobbadan · 18/11/2010 07:23

Welcome the dog walker and congrats on the baby!

Undertone do you have a slow cooker? as you could do your joints in there and you dont have to be there while it cooks?

I have both DC off school as both were sick last night, so i will have a fab day cleaning up sick! Woo Hoo. (i may even be lucky enough to catch the bug as lose some weight by not eating!)

Well im sure i will burn some calories doing some de-cluttering and odd jobs as im now stuck in the house all day.

Undertone · 18/11/2010 09:14

Hi thedogwalker - sorry - I was fulminating about my nice ham to such an extent I forgot to say hello.

Slobbadan - now THAT is an idea! Can you literally just bung in a 1.2kg ham or a beef brisket joint or even a chicken and just leave it? Does it render the fat down like in an oven?

I could also save money on salad by doing cheap veg-heavy casseroles... maybe that's something for the Christmas list. Are they expensive? I was hoping to ask for new running trainers as well, as my 10-year old ones are looking decidedly sad.

BudaisintheZONE · 18/11/2010 09:36

Hello.

Have been crap. Crap crap crap.

Still on antibiotics for chest infection although feeling much better. Craved comfort food last week though and was fed up not being able to have easy family food so that is what I have been doing.

Am going to Dublin tomorrow for weekend and am out tonight so planning on getting back to plan from Tuesday.

Am off to chiropracter in a little while as back is killing me for some reason.

Undertone - well done you! You have done SO well. Slow cooking meat sounds a great idea. I bought a slow cooker from Amazon last month for less than 20 quid I think.

OP posts:
iluvcake · 18/11/2010 10:00

Lol, undertone, at "roadkill"!!

I bought a slow cooker from John Lewis for £19.99. It's brilliant. You can cook joints in it (but I haven't tried that yet) but I use it about three times a week. I literally throw some meat in and a load of veg and leave it all day. It has saved me loads of time and hassle in the kitchen.

Slobbadan, sorry to hear your DCs are sick, poor things. Hopefully you won't catch it (although it sounds as if you are quite keen to have it too!!).

Buda, hope the chiro can sort you out. In the meantime, don't go over the top foodwise before tues!! You've done so well so far. This is a blip. You were so helpful to me when I was despairing about my biffing.

You can do this!! Get back in the Zone with us!!!!!!!!

dinkystinky · 18/11/2010 10:14

Undertone - lol at you and your late night nice hams. Very mumsnet! I third - or fourth - a slow cooker. Will take you maybe 5 minutes of prep time in the morning and then you'll have a cooked meal when you come home in the evening. Great for veggie hotpots and soups as well as casseroles. Meat gets cooked very slowly so becomes v tender. Is lovely.

Slobbadan - hope your kids get better soon and its not too chundertastic in your house today.

Buda - poor you! Have a great time in Dublin and hope the chiropractor sorts your back. Who else had a bad back too? Hope they're all better too.

Slobbadan · 18/11/2010 11:38

Undertone, you can just pop a whole joint of gammon, brisket, whole chicken etc in the SC and you dont even need water and tis delish.

I also do chilli, stew, soup casserole etc in it and dinner is ready when you come home.

Budda, hope your back gets sorted and enjoy dublin.

Dinky, thank you kids are feeling a bit better and i hope it continues. And it was me that also had a bad back, its still not 100% so no exercise.

I have thus far today had 2 slices of toast and eat smart pate, 1 fat free yog, 4 pringles and 2 slices of malt loaf.

I have cabin fever and i am nipping the eating crap malarkie in the bud as i know it ould snowball today as im bored.

I have no motivation to do any spring cleaning.

iluvcake · 18/11/2010 12:40

I don't know what's wrong with me....

I am starving. I had a slice of toast this morning with a scraping of butter and jam(not good I know but I was in a hurry) and a cup of coffee. Porridge with dried apricots afer school run. I felt shaky before I had my snack about 11 of some nuts, a satsuma and a square of dark chocolate and cup of fruit tea.

I'm now starving, feel a bit shaky, have a headache and my tummy is rumbling.

Surely I'm eating enough and eating the right things to keep my blood sugar level stable. I feel like I want to biff out.

I've had this for the last two days.

justaminute · 18/11/2010 13:11

Oh dear iluvcake - Are you getting enough sleep? I feel like that and biff when I'm tired. Also, are you drinking enough water? Stay strong and hope you find something (NOT CHOCOLATE!) to feel better.

Undertone - another vote for a slow cooker here. Great for casseroles, spag bol, chilli etc. However, I did once do a beef joint and I wasn't impressed - the texture was very different to roasting it - maybe I cooked it too long Confused but then I like my roast beef with a bit of blood in it Grin.

Slobbadan - you have amazing will power to have only eaten 4 pringles. once I've popped I just can't stop Wink
