WARNING: I have come to whinge!!

I've been struck down with the bastard that is plantar fasciitis, a pretty bad episode that has also spread up the back of heel/Achilles area. I can barely walk. I have a trip to Chester planned with my daughter tomorrow and honestly don't think I'm going to be able to manage.

I've suffered with it on and off for maybe 30 years, so I know the drill - stretching, ice, various support socks, gel pads, insoles, Vionics, I am fully loaded. But it really, really pisses me off when it happens, because I can't walk - and walking is basically my sanity saver, especially after spending so long recovering from ankle surgery in 2024. I've not started driving again since the surgery (I am a giant wuss, plus we have a different car and I'm scared of it!) but not that bothered, I live in an area where I have everything I need, and I LOVE walking. But now, being stuck in the house, dependent on others, I feel so depressed - I know it will clear up, been here before, but I think I'm getting some kind of flashback PTSD type vibe to when I was in a wheelchair and having to use a commode! Obviously it's not that bad, but it's really upsetting me.

Every time you read about PF it says being overweight is one of the factors - like it seems to be for bloody everything, from cancer to heart disease to global warming - and I'd hoped that shedding 20% of my body weight would help. Aaaagh, I hate this!

Right. Whinge over. I am being a giant baby, I know, but needed to blow off some steam! As you were...

I have had this
Yet it came on at my thinest ,and I believe it was down to me wearing very hard sole boots ..but yes they like to blame extra weight for most things
I totally sympathise,it is a dreadful condition and the only thing that helped me was wearing crocks ..soft squishy soles seemed to give relief
Fingers crossed you manage your trip to Chester xx

Happy Saturday losers!

@eibbed999 plantar fasciitis is an absolute bastard - all sympathy. I had it really badly when my daughter was newborn, which is weird because that was probably my lowest weight in a long time thanks to gestational diabetes. I hope you feel better soon!

I am annoyed this week as my weight has been fluctuating weirdly. Got down to a low of 98.3 kg on Tuesday which is about bang on BMI 35 and so was excited about getting in to Class 1 obesity. Then on Wednesday I was suddenly back at 98.9kg and on Friday I was 99.6kg! This morning back to 98.8kg. Probably my worst week so far and the first time my little trend line on Happy Scales has gone up. I am hoping it’s a blip.

I am thinking about investing in some personal training sessions as I want to do strength training type stuff but have less than no clue. I had a watch of some “beginner” YouTube videos a while back and found it bewildering so I think I need a real human to help me. So much money though and I’m a bit brassic at the moment.

Does anyone else get weird skin sensitivity as a side effect? Not at the injection site, just on random parts of the body? I’ve had this a few times now and it usually only lasts a day or so, but at the moment I’ve got a sore patch on my neck just under my ear and down towards my collarbone and it doesn’t seem to be going away. There’s no mark, no redness or anything visible, but it feels really sensitive and “raw” if you know what I mean.

Springflowers2 · 24/01/2026 10:26

I have not lost any weight the whole of January
I had 10 days on that medication that had me constantly snacking.
Other than that ,I've no idea what I've actually done wrong
I lost 3 lbs and put 3 lbs back on .
My calories are already so low ,I can't drop them any lower ..ahhhhhhh

AmberLime · 24/01/2026 09:52

eibbed999, i had plantar fasciitis so bad I ended up on crutches a few years ago.

Have you done any single leg gym machine exercises? It may help you isolate the specific muscle causing it, so you know where to focus building strength. It's usually not the affected foot/ankle.

I was a daily long distance runner. When PF stopped me running I changed to the gym and discovered via single leg presses that my left foot PF was caused by an exceptionally weak right calf muscle. I then spoke to the resident PT at the gym, who watched my on the treadmill and suggested I also had a tight left hip (can't remember the muscle name). Essentially he suggested what happened was:

  • I damaged the left hip muscle
  • This caused a change in running gait to compensate for the slight hip pain/niggle
  • This changed gait put increases pressure on my right calf, due to an uneven running gait
  • This resulted in another change in my running gait to compensate for this niggle
  • All of which ended up outwardly showing as PF

Essentially, if I'd have properly rested and allowed my hip or calf niggles to heal, so that my running gait remained even, then I'd have not had PF.

I may be projecting, but you mentioned ankle surgery and lots of walking. It's possible that your walking gait is uneven due to your body compensating for weaker muscles following surgery, and this is the cause of repeated PF.

Or maybe you're not me and I should stop projecting!

Interesting how the body works isn't it @AmberLime - such a complicated machine! I don't go to the gym so can't try that, but mine is historic. I had it long before the ankle surgery and recovery, so that's not really part of it I don't think. I can imagine how frustrating it was to have to give up running, I have a few running friends that's happened to. It only comes on maybe once every 6 months, and I do know how to manage it - just very bad timing on this occasion!

Thanks for the empathy @FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping @Springflowers2

Ouch @eibbed999 that sounds incredibly painful. I hope you're soon on the mend, and manage your trip tomorrow.

Week 42 for me, and 2lb off, total 6st 4lb so far. My BMI is now 40.5, so tantalising close to the magic 39. I hate the BMI scale with a passion, and think it's all a load of bollocks, so don't know why it's so important to me, but I am desperate to be out of the 40s. Fingers crossed the next few weeks!

SW 22st 8lb
CW 16st 4lb
GW provisional 11st 4lb

What awful timing @eibbed999. Do you take painkillers? Paracetamol helped me a bit.

Motnight · 24/01/2026 10:42

Well done to everyone's victories - nsv as well as actual weight. I've got back to my pre Xmas weight which I am happy with though it's actually my 27th December weight - I didn't put any weight on over Xmas itself but then made a whole load of bad food decisions.

eibbed999 · 24/01/2026 10:47

Congrats @Motnight - I'm still sadly 5lbs away from regaining my pre-Christmas weight. It must feel good to have achieved that, if frustrating that you needed to! Onwards and downwards for you now.

The PF actually feels okay when I'm just sitting - it's only standing and walking that hurt, and boy do they hurt! I have some freezy spray I use that helps, and a some gadgets I got when I was recovering from the broken ankle - both are like boots that go around your foot, but one is ice and one is heat, so I alternate when needed.

TragicMuse · 24/01/2026 11:40

Week 46, 10mg

SW 19st 4lbs (Jan 2025, pre-MJ)
SW on MJ 18st 11.5lbs (1 Mar 2025)
CW 13st 3lbs
Change this week -1.75lbs
Total loss 85lbs/6st 1lb

So close to the 12s now…

ConfusedMiddleAger83 · 24/01/2026 11:46

I can also empathise @eibbed999 as the fellow broken ankler and i think I have the same gadget (I only have an ice one though!). It’s so awful to feel derailed and as if it’s out of your control.

I am waiting to get onto the waiting list for the removal of my ankle metalwork (nice way to make the NHS stats better, string out the appointments for months to even let you on the list) and was having thoughts about there being no point starting my new exercise programme but it could be years before I get the surgery at this rate and I may not even need it by the time I get there so forced myself to ignore the fact that I’ll be immobile again for a few months.

Anyway my point is that I understand the trauma of not wanting to be back in that place after the surgery and not even able to get to the toilet or off the toilet again, and hope the PF is just a temporary blip for you.

Thank you so much @ConfusedMiddleAger83 - I had a little cry reading that! It really has been a joy regaining my mobility, and even a blip like this makes you realise all over again how precious it is. I hate being dependent on people. I mean, who is going to pick up all my Vinted parcels??? I'm being very snappy with my poor husband, not his fault at all, and I do keep apologising - but he didn't cope well when I was incapacitated, and I dread anything that puts us back in that position. It's very brave of you to consider the metalwork op. But maybe a good way to avoid some of the associated problems later on?

Onenotsosmallstep · 24/01/2026 12:00

Gah @eibbed999 what a massive pain, literally. Hope it passes quickly.

Week 44 here yesterday, and scale and NSVs. 14st 13 at yesterday’s weigh in- BMI 31.8. 3.5lbs to go until 10st lost. I’m speaking at a conference next month and whilst I’m super nervous at least it won’t be because of my weight- just general imposter syndrome. Last year I attended the event and I remember not wanting anyone to see me eat but also taking 3 plates from the buffet to make myself feel better.

It’s strange no longer being ‘very fat’, what I have noticed particularly in recent weeks is that people are generally nicer to you and more interested in talking to you. I genuinely despise that our society is like this.

More positively though, the Vinted obsession continues and today I am for the first time wearing a pair of Mint Velvet size 14 jeans. Size 14! It’s madness!

Keep going everyone, a bit cheesy but together we’ve got this.

I’m considering it because I get daily irritation from the pins and can just feel the tightrope in my ankle all the time - can’t remember if it’s a tightrope you have too? There’s also some scar tissue to remove to improve my joint mobility.

I’ve been assured that the second op would have a much shorter recovery as I don’t also have 3 torn ligaments this time and removal much less traumatic for the joint than the insertion… but for now I’m just staying in the system and will see how everything is when I get there. Also focusing on the weight loss and exercise as I was in really bad shape when I broke it so recovery would be easier with a stronger body.

Sorry I didn’t mean to make you cry!

I don't have a tightrope no. I am getting some irritation, and it plays up something awful in the cold, which I was warned about. I had two surgeries, one to repair the break, and a second one to reattach the torn Deltoid ligament. Like yourself I was in pretty bad shape at the time - still am, but definitely better! At least you'll know what to expect this time, and as they've said, hopefully a lot simpler and less traumatic for you.

Fffreeeeezing · 24/01/2026 12:35

Week 45 and a well deserved 4lb whoosh bringing me really close to 8st loss and ever closer to the elusive under 40bmi.

I'm in a pattern now of either stay the same or lose a lb for a few weeks and then a whoosh of 4lbs. I'm doing strength training and Pilates 5 days a week now on top of countless hours of dog walking, I'm sticking religiously to my calorie deficit and tracking my macros so I think my weight loss is going to look like this going forward. Even under the fat I can see muscles and I can definitely feel them!

I'd just like my sleep to improve, really restless lately and wake up a lot. Apparently sleep can really affect weight loss and after nutrition is the most beneficial thing for your body whilst losing weight.

Oh and if we ignore a mere 100g (and I can!) I've now lost 50kg!

My mini goal was to get to a 9st loss by 14th March (MJ anniversary) 16lb to go and 7wks to go........could happen I suppose, what will be will be!

@FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping have a look at an app called Ladder. It's £15 a month (I can send you a 7 day pass if you are interested, just give me a shout. You can do at home workouts and it's so easy to follow, you just pick a team and follow the programme. It's so highly rated in the fitness industry as they use world class coaches and I really recommend it because it makes workouts so easy (not the workouts themselves, they are fairly hardcore depending on which team!)

Oh and so sorry about the PF @eibbed999 I also suffered from that pre MJ and it was like stepping on a plug every step. Weirdly my first MJ jab made it disappear within days but I'm still weary of it coming back, you don't forget that pain do you

MJ has helped with lots of things, but I've had PF twice since I've been on it, so sadly not quite as magical on this! Though I'm sure the weight loss is helping (she says through gritted teeth). Congrats on your achievements - you must be so much fitter now!

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/01/2026 14:49

I’m sorry @eibbed999 that sounds so painful. I used to suffer badly with PF too, but it seems to have disappeared now. Not sure if it’s the weight loss or the MJ reducing inflammation - maybe a combination of both? I hope yours also disappears asap 🤞

NSV for me today - I started a new dance fitness class. It was in a studio with floor to ceiling mirrors which would usually be my worst nightmare, but I actually looked…fine. Normal. Thin, even 😳. It was a strange thing looking around and realising I was probably one of the thinnest in the room - I’m so used to being the biggest, I really struggle to recognise myself these days! It felt good though, and the class was so much fun.

@ConfusedMiddleAger83 Another fellow broken ankler! They gave me a choice to have an operation/ pins or not and I opted not to. It was a long slog waiting for it to heal/ set naturally and it still gives me trouble sometimes (it’s been six years!) but I heard sometimes the pins just create more problems. I hope you get it sorted!

Bloody ankles! The human body is a weird design! I didn't have any choice about the pins really, it was mashed up, broken bones, torn ligaments and dislocated. All from falling off a step. It is a lot better now, feels quite strong, but as they said to me in hospital a mended vase is never as strong as it was. I'm very appreciative of my mobility these days though!
