Big price increases?

CoverMeInMarmalade · 14/08/2025 11:45

Anyone else seen this chatter about massive price increases announced for MJ (to pharmacies) in the last hour or so?

Very concerning as it looks like it could double the cost of some of the doses. I'll try to find the copy of the letter sent out...

I have 3 pens on order (a side effect of the pharmacy I use regularly sending out discount codes; guess that's gonna stop) but they all have future delivery dates on them for end Aug, Sept etc.

I wonder if those orders will be honoured?

People are panicking all over social media, it’s gone mad,

el Lilly sells to wholesalers and direct to large pharmacies.
no one pays list price.
the price is subject to discounts and rebates for quantity.
so like any other product , commercial deals are done.
the list price going up gives absolutely no indication of what the market pricing will be to consumers. As the discounts, deals, rebates are not disclosed or known.
el Lilly and the pharmacies make too much money to kill the uk market, which increases of this nature would do.
Leaving them not just significantly out of pocket, but with spare capacity in their manufacturing locations. The whole supply chain wants to keep making money.
everyone will switch to wegovy.
el Lilly are clear they are working out commercial terms now. So we don’t know if the current rebates and discounts will increase to off set it. Which is hugely likely.
so this is a list price movement only. it in no way indicates it will be the actual prices charged.

JasonTindallsTan · 14/08/2025 13:13

I’m gutted, whilst I could afford the new price it is very very difficult to justify spending that much on what could be achieved through much more difficult but cheaper means. I’m going to order a pen today and think about what to do.

What new price? No new consumer price has been communicated, just a simple list price change with unknown discounts and rebates underneath it as part of commercial terms,

Redlightbulb · 14/08/2025 13:15

This is very scary. I still have about 4 stone to lose. I can afford the price increase.. but can't justify spending that sort of money. Was hoping to stay on for maintenance as well.

SilenceInside · 14/08/2025 13:15

@TheRealGoose what is the purpose of the list price, if it is meaningless in this way? Does it indicate that prices will be going up, but not as much as it may initially seem?

I might consider switching to Wegovy, but some people might no longer qualify based on their BMI and be left unable to start a different medication.

I don’t think the low prices we see will be continuing though

CoverMeInMarmalade · 14/08/2025 13:16

@TheRealGoose - thank you.

I really hope what you say comes to pass and we do not see price increases the size of which will cut off the supply for many people. It's a ray of hope...

I currently pay 340 pounds per pen from a uk supplier who send it to me where I live abroad. If the price goes up I’ll be just as well purchasing it locally and paying the 450 pounds if costs here which is why I was buying from the uk in the first place. But I’m at target tomorrow so I was hoping to be off it completely by the 15th of December snd until then I will pay whatever I have to pay - very grudgingly.

My other alternative is to have a prescription issued where I live and get it brought from India when friends go on holiday/do a flight there and have it brought back for me which is what a lot of people already do. But I think it’s only available in a 5m dose though that would do if I decided to micro dose at any stage.

I feel very sorry for anyone who’s heart must be on the floor today after hearing about this. ❤️

IncessantNameChanger · 14/08/2025 13:19

Bugger. I have been very slow to reorder pens but I'm going to reorder today now. I think I'm going to try and get two pens from two different suppliers as well.

Ok the rumoured 50% increase in sale price.

PinchOfVom · 14/08/2025 13:26

Is this effective immediately?

Motnight · 14/08/2025 13:26

Fuck. I can afford an increase in price. But am really sad for people who can't. Am hoping that it will become clearer about what this actually means to us as customers.

PinchOfVom · 14/08/2025 13:26

1st sep

SilenceInside · 14/08/2025 13:30

@PinchOfVom no, it's a price change from Sept 1st, but from Eli Lilly to the wholesalers, then on to the pharmacies, so what the price will be for consumers is not yet known, nor when individual pharmacies might increase their prices. As far as I can tell from the limited information reported so far.

Nearly every manufacturer has a list price, it is not remotely relevant to the market price, it is the price that the discounts and rebates are then applied to.

The only customer who would pay list price is someone with no deal or no commercial terms agreed buying tiny volumes .

List price and then commercial terms is standard industry practice. Just someone has leaked this and now everyone is going crazy as no context was given, it’s ridiculous.

List prices and negotiated terms for quantity is standard industry practice. Across most industries. Yes the list price has went up to align with Europe. But the commercial terms underneath that are the key information.

No it’s not. It is a list price change, the price to the wholesalers or major pharmacies will be subject to commercial terms, and is not visible to the public there is no information on if that is increasing or by how much, all that’s known is commercial terms are being agreed,

SilenceInside · 14/08/2025 13:33

@TheRealGoose thank you for explaining that. Is it not inevitable that a very much higher list price will mean price rises for consumers, as even with commercial terms, discounts, rebates, the starting point is so much higher that an overall price rise is a definite outcome?

Goldleafcat · 14/08/2025 13:33

CoverMeInMarmalade · 14/08/2025 12:17

At the old prices, I'd have taken this for life.

If the new ones are much higher, I am going to have to find a way to titrate down/off. As a lifetime yoyo dieter who has never found anything that works like this and as someone who health and life has been totally saved by this drug, it's heartbreaking.

Edited

Agreed, same for me. I’d planned to be on MJ a lot longer (maybe forever, as I see it as investment for my overall health and wellbeing) (much more effective than a pricey gym membership!) but if the price increases are anything like the letter (£330 for 15mg!) I’ll be coming off it much sooner than planned. 😭

It’ll be a huge blow for so many.

Yes it is. At the end of the day prices will be going up. And by quite a lot

ymemanresu · 14/08/2025 13:34

basic economics- the higher the demand, the higher the price.

Yes, that was what I was, badly, trying to say, that we don't yet know what the impact for customers will be. But that this list price change is from Sept 1.

MrBeanMustBeMyDad · 14/08/2025 13:35

I think that my year long commitment with shemed might be brought to an abrupt end! I signed on early this year for £99 a month for 12 months. Definitely won't be making sense for them now

No, of course it is not inevitable it is also hugely unlikely, they understand fully what the market can sustain, they understand fully what competitor products are sold for, they also understand fully that competitor new molecules will soon enough hit thr market with generic versions of wegovy at a lowe price point from next year, all they have done is moved the list price in line with Europe. In no way does this indicate the commercial terms will not mitigate most of if not all of the increase, yes we may see some small increases but that’s about it.

this should never have hit the media without context, someone’s has scaremongered without context and people are not understanding what el Lilly said, they have moved list in line with Europe and are now agreeing commercial terms. The last part is the critical part.
