What opinion about WLI would you not normally admit to?

Do you have an unpopular or unpalatable opinion?

Mine is that if you can't do the maths, you probably shouldn't be messing about with the dosage.

I appreciate this may be specific to me but in my experience on and off WLI not all calories are equal - I had several weeks on strict 1100 cals a day but included toasted sandwiches, small amounts of pasta and the odd biscuit or bag of crisps and simply didn’t lose weight - other weeks full of next to no carb at all , mainly eggs, chicken, cottage cheese, prawn salads etc and I lost almost a kilo but same number of calories -
i lose at exactly the same rate as when I was on MJ if I stick to 1100 and next to no carb and I think anyone needs to at least try 6 months like this as first port of call before automatically just reaching for the WLI - what MJ did do was totally reset my mindset that I can’t lose weight - I can , but had to change the mindset

6 months? Try 6 months before reaching for WLI?

Jesus Christ I tried 30 bloody years. Every method going. What I eat now is what I would have eaten before when trying to lose weight. The WLI supports me and makes me able to stick to it easily.

Quite. And try getting on the scales, realising you have 8 stone to lose and then trying to get by on 1100 calories a day ‘to give it a chance’ for six months, while your head is full of unstoppable, unconquerable thoughts about food (what you would like to eat, when you will eat next, what will be the next thing you eat, what about those biscuits in the cupboard, ooooh…croissants! etc).

My secret thought about WLI is that we (me included) are ignoring the risks. I was on them months ago, stopped and am on them again. BUT I stopped before because they'd started to change my blood test results. But of course, the weight was starting to go back on so... I'm trying to be a lot more careful this time. I know it's a risk though.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/08/2025 11:16

@22O725 I don’t disagree but that’s you - a lot ( not all by any means) of people are reaching for it as first port of call and have never in all honesty stuck to 1100 cals a day low carbing for a sustained period and yep it’s not easy I know .

Crikeyalmighty · 26/08/2025 11:23

@PigglyWigglyOhYeah well the post did ask for not popular views!! Doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong , but my view is plenty don’t even try changing habits first now, even if just 2 or 3 stone over . I’ve used MJ , but am losing at same rate without but have stuck to the principles - I convinced myself at 63 and 4 to5 stone over I couldn’t do it without - clearly I can but was just never consistent enough over a longer period. I’m not against them at all by the way, think it’s really individual thing and some people they clearly work better for than others.

I’m not ignoring the risks. I’ve read about them in detail and a number of studies. I’m taking them as the risks for me in remaining overweight were more. And I’m doing things to ensure that the risks are less (slow weight loss, building muscle, reducing alcohol).

Tje gallbladder and pancreatitis risks are always risks with weight loss, especially rapid weight loss. They aren’t specific to WLIs.

What risks do you mean? I have considered the risks of WLI against the risks of morbid obesity and tbh WLI come out on top every time.

They do. I agree. But I'm having changes in my liver function test results which can be a sign of pancreatic problems. Pancreatitis can be life threatening.

I think most people have more sense than to ignore this tbh. You are nuts for going back on WLI if they are affecting your liver. Please don’t suggest that we are all doing this though.

@Slightyamusedandsilly
So you were on WLIs but stopped because of blood test results. You've since gone back on them and have further concerning liver function test results? I hope your doctor knows you're on WLIs, presumably they've advised you come off them immediately?

I was on them and stopped at the changed results. Have resumed and had new tests last week to check. Just waiting on results.

FoxRedPuppy · 26/08/2025 15:45

I have regular blood tests for my liver and kidneys (and thyroid) because of other
medication I take. So it will show any changes.

Should say this is medication I’ve been on for 15 years and not once in all that time has anyone mentioned risks to me. Funny that it’s only with WLI that random people want to tell me about risks associated with medications.

Many medications for mental illness have very serious side effects, including of the liver, and yet they are thoroughly encouraged. This is statement on how obesity is seen, not about any particular post.

tostaky · 26/08/2025 17:18

I dont like how MJ messes up my periods! I was clockwork tegular before MJ and since ive started my cycle are unpredictable!

The problem is for us sensible adults we don’t want idiotic behaviour from others to mean big changes in prescribing.

They shouldn’t make big changes in prescribing imo. Let the idiots crack on

Donewiththisshit · 26/08/2025 18:34

That pharmacists shouldn’t be prescribing it. They are not doctors and do not have the skills, training or ability to do the medical monitoring and ability to manage the whole picture that doctors do. I believe only doctors should be prescribing it. And don’t get me started on nurses who prescribe alongside Botox and vitamin B12 and advertise on face book. I find it gobsmacking that this happens but get slammed in real life (and in here) for expressing it.

Tbh, most pharmacists have a better working knowledge Mounjaro than most doctors right now.

FoxRedPuppy · 26/08/2025 18:52

It’s only prescribing pharmacists, not all pharmacists. They have extra training and are able to prescribe a number of drugs.

Also I know my provider, I am prescribed by a doctor.

FoxRedPuppy · 26/08/2025 18:54

A doctor once prescribed me medication that had a deadly interaction with another drug I take. It was a pharmacist that picked it up and stopped it being given to me!

Twelftytwo · 03/08/2025 22:02

That most people who think they can take it for a while, lose a load of weight then "finish" on mounjaro and keep the weight off are deluded.

Do you mean that you think they will always have to be on it?

JustCantMakeMyMindUp · 26/08/2025 18:59

Are you all having liver function tests?

Illegal prescriptions are one thing.

My GP didn’t even know what it is when I went on it. I’ve never come across a single health care professional who did until I went in for an op and the anaesthetist knew about the gastric effects.

Yet if anything goes wrong or you have side effects it will be a doctor who is likely asked to deal with it.

Mine is prescribed by a doctor. Part of my weight gain was due to a misdiagnosis by doctors (consultants) who prescribed steroids. Some of the worst care I’ve had has been from doctors, especially consultants.

My point is most people are getting nothing more than a prescription. No medical input at managing the entire picture. I am genuinely sorry you have had a misdiagnosis from a doctor, but the majority of your investigation treatment and management could not have been led by a pharmacist. These healthcare professionals are brilliant and have a role to play in healthcare but I personally do not feel they should be independently managing one condition without medical input/support/collaboration.

FoxRedPuppy · 27/08/2025 09:44

Fair point. As I said I chose a prescriber that uses doctors. I need to anyway as I have a load of other medical things to be considered.
