New thread.

First post re: lifting heavy.
I mentioned on the other thread about lifting heavy for 6-8 reps and I was told it was bad advice. Clearly it’s not my advice made up by me - it’s from world leading female health doctor expert Stacey Sims. There is plenty online from her (loads of podcasts) so have a listen. I’ve been lifting this way for 3 years since the outset of menopause symptoms, on her advice and I have significantly increased muscle size and strength. She also has written a couple of books which are excellent.

Clearly this can only be done with good form or it will lead to injury. Either use a PT (as suggested on the last thread) or use the resistance machines in the gym which basically lock you into the correct position.

Actually when I said I’ve made no changes I did have a couple of eight day gaps instead of seven. Surely that’s not it!

protein- I eat peanut butter, protein shakes, tofu, falafel, pulses etc.

I do wonder if bodies just get to a point where they said sod this. I also feel suddenly saggy. Boobs a bit floppy, excess skin on stomach and thighs. Despite a yoga class most days and / or strength.

maybe we can only go so far before that’s just it. I’m a ‘healthy weight’ and would like to bloody stay there!

Peanut butter / falafel and pulses are not particularly high in protein. How many grams of protein a day are you eating? My guess is that you aren’t eating enough protein to get body fat lower.

I’m 51 (on HRT) and now have a 6 pack and my upper body now looks “ripped”.

I’m lifting very heavy (eg today I squatted with 60kg and RDLs at 70k). I’ve consistently eaten 120g-150g protein a day.

Probs about 100g. I don’t lift heavy. I am a part time yoga teacher and it’s all about that and Pilates and low weights high reps stuff. The point is more that two weeks ago no hunger this week I want all the food. I don’t like it!

Yes I can see very annoying. I still don’t get hungry, but I find it harder to resist snacking.

I’ve been doing a lot of Reformer Pilates and people do ask how I have got such good muscle tone (on arms), but it’s the heavy weights not the Pilates.

One of those has opened in barnet and I’m tempted but I see it will end up being another expensive habit!!

it’s funny feeling like I have a choice over how to look. I don’t have much interest in proper heavy weight stuff, and if I’m not interested I won’t stick at it. I tend to peloton because it’s right there and then walk and yoga etc. One of the reasons for losing weight was I did too much exercise as it was the only way I could keep the same work and it became a viscous circle. So I needed to eat less and do less to find balance ironically

I live in Barnet, I’m a member of Virgin active in Mill Hill, unlimited reformer Pilates included in membership. People do seem to pay a fortune for it.

I’m a bit obsessed with weight lifting. I’m doing it mostly for the longevity benefits but I’ve got into it.

My PBs (2 weeks ago) are 92.5kg squat and 97.5kg deadlift. I can bench around 50kg. Before I lost the weight I could bench 57.5kg but in the weight loss I lost bench and shoulder (both push) strength.

Ah. Yes I meant Barnet as in the borough.
I do the Pilates as it’s included in membership. But I think you can get a lot of the same benefits from online Pilates

So I've put on 2 lb again this week, which is 4lb gain in 2 weeks. I've done nothing different over the last two weeks. My average weight loss was 1lb a week so I am back to where I was 6 weeks ago.

I've got 2 shots left in my current 2.5 pen, I am going to ave to go up to a 5 pen next time aren't I? I am going to be honest, I've never been able to loose weight easily and it felt too good to be true and today it feels like just that!

I went up to 3.75mg last night and I wish I'd gone up sooner. I think I hadn't noticed the suppression wearing off and the food noise coming back as it was slow and subtle, but already this morning I can tell the difference. I moved up by using the bonus dose from my old pen plus a tiny amount from the new pen, I should be able to get 3x3.75 mg out of the new pen (2.5mg pen) then I'll be using 5mg pens.

1.1kg loss for me after a 0.7kg gain last week so really a 0.4kg loss over two weeks but I'm just happy the scales have started moving again!

You started in July right? Why have you stuck at 2.5mg so long, if it's not working?

I started end of July (I have a lot of weight to lose though, SW 17st 11) and could tell from the outset 2.5mg wasn't doing anything so increased the frequency to every 4 days to move through that pen into 5mg. Even at 5mg I wasn't seeing much effect so have those every 5 days. Only when I got to 7.5mg did I find good suppression for 7 full days, so I've stuck there. (CW 14 weeks later is 14s 13).

If 2.5mg isn't working, it's not necessarily that WLI aren't working for you, more likely that you need a higher dose.

Maybe talking to a nutritionalist will help to look at changing eating habits and aldo manage possible side effects? I know that the way I eat has changed completely in the last 14 weeks.

I stuck with 2.5mg as I was loosing on average 1lb a week which I was very happy with. Food wise I know I am fine, I don't track to the last calorie as I know from experience I get really obsessed about it and it's a fine line for me. I'm averaging around 1,200 and 1,400 cals a day with lots of protein.

AmberLime · 18/10/2025 11:55

I'd go up a dose, if it was me. In fact, I'd probably jab those last two doses from your 2.5mg pen closer together in order to avoid another gain.

You’ve done well to lose until now on 2.5mg.

Order 5mg next time - and keep close tabs on macros for 2-3 weeks until you start it - aim for
120g protein
30g fibre
mostly wholefoods
no empty carbs (best carb sources are fruit / veg / pulses)

I’ve also stalled on 2.5mg but at 58kg (down from 70kg) I think that’s the new goal and maintenance target. I’m not tracking and I’m pretty sure my calories have drifted up enough to cause the stall.

Nellieinthebarn · 18/10/2025 16:08

I've lost 2lb this week, very very pleased with that. I maintained last week which was also brilliant as I was on holiday and ate quite a lot of bread, and had a few wines, and a couple of desserts. I didn't go too mad, but if I certainly had a bit of a break from calorie counting and being very strict.

I am also going back to stones and pounds, I thought it would be better to use Kgs, but they don't really mean anything to me. I find myself converting it all to stones, so I thought I'd save myself the bother.

So SW on 21/06/ was 13stone and 7 pounds. I was kidding myself I was still a size 16, but my jeans didn't feel comfortable at all, and my tops were very tight. I couldn't wear an underwired bra. I was an 18 in reality.
CW today 11 stone and 9 pounds, I am in size 14 jeans, no problem doing them up at all, I still wear size 16 shirts and t shirts, but they hang nicely now and the tops are back in an underwire.
TW?? still not decided, but I will see how I feel at 11 stone. NHS would like me to be 10 to 10.5 stone, but I think that is a bit skinny for me.

I have one whole 5mg pen left, and one dose left on the current one. I was doing 3.75mg, but went up to 5mg today. I think I will get one more 5mg out of this one. That will give me 6 more weeks on MJ if I use the golden dose. Then I will be on Wegovy. Fingers crossed it works as well as the MJ.

My scales seem to be stuck! Virtually no change for nearly three weeks now, despite eating well within a calorie deficit (TDEE 2,200 ish, eating around 1200-1400 calories per day). After three weeks I can't blame it on hormone fluctuation etc any more so what the hell is going on?

Edited

I’ve had the exact same - mentioned it to my trainer and he said to do more movement, walking or another active hobby which is what I thought he might say but was kind of hoping he wouldn’t!

ByLemonFish · 19/10/2025 11:36

I started last weekend in June

SW 12st 7lbs
CW 11st
TW 10 st

I've had a loss every week although not big losses. Only lost 3lbs in last month but haven't been exercising so need to address that this week.

I'm happy enough as I'm 2 stone lighter than I was last Christmas, bought size 12 jeans a few weeks ago, it's been many years since I was size 12.

So plans for this week to exercise more, no alcohol and keep going

Hope everyone else is doing well
😃

Wildflowerblooms · 20/10/2025 11:40

Today marks the start of week 16 for me. SW was 13s 12, CW is 11s 11. Excited to be down more than 2 stones now. Still haven’t figured out my TW yet. I guess I’ll just keep going until I hit a healthy weight for my height. I’m inching closer to my next target on this journey, which is 11s 4 as that will put me into being in the overweight category and no longer classified as obese. When I started Mounjaro I was in a size 18, but now I’m comfortably in a size 14 and will probably have to drop down to a size 12 soon as a lot of the 14s I have a getting a bit loose. I’m looking forward to being a steady (hopefully maintainable) size again, so that I can buy new clothes and not feel guilty. Currently, I’m mostly buying off Vinted and living in leggings so as not to have to purchase too many new things. For once, I’m also looking forward to bloodwork next month, I’m hoping to finally hit healthy blood sugar and cholesterol readings. I’ve already saw a massive improvement in both along with my blood pressure so that’s probably my biggest win in all this truthfully. I feel so much healthier and just better all round since starting.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 20/10/2025 11:45

Another 2lb off for me. Taking the total to 33lns since first injection on 1st July.

I bought new work trousers in May last year in a size 16. Yesterday I bought the exact same pair in a size 10.

MeridaBrave · 20/10/2025 18:28

I was 57.3kg today and 57kg is my “floor” (as agreed with my sister). I’m a size 8 now and in proportion so I agree that should not lose more. BMI is 21.6. I actually once dieted down to 53kg (from 73kg, my adult life has been repeated yo-yo dieting, have got up to 72/73kg several times) but that was before I got into weightlifting so I’m presumably carrying more muscle now so 57kg probably similar to 53kg in 2011.

So started at 70.3kg so that’s 13kg since start of July (including a 2 week holiday where I stayed the same).

The weight loss has massively slowed down in the last month partially as I’m being less careful, and it’s been the Jewish festivals which are literally an endless litany of big family meals, I actually took 2.5mg twice a week during this period. Anyway all over now so back to 2.5mg once a week and will think about titrating down further probably to 2mg in another few weeks. But really want to keep weight stable without feeling totally deprived.

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well, certainly looks like it!

I’ve done my 17th jab today. And 2 pounds down. So a total of 2stone 2 pounds down. I’m pleased with that but still plenty more left to go. Also my waist is down 5.5 inches. I still feel really massive though so I must’ve been blind to how big I actually got. 17st was my starting weight and I still look forward to jab day 😂

That is bloody amazing! Well done, I don't think I've ever been a size 10, maybe when I was about 10 😂

stormageddmum · 21/10/2025 00:23

I think the increase in hunger is seasonal change - humans feel hungrier and eat more as we head into autumn and winter. So you feel the gear change, maybe regardless of WLIs. If we were cavewomen, we'd be making the most of autumn's relative abundance before scarcity of winter innit.

I was in the gym today and someone I don’t know said, oh you’ve lost weight. So I said yes. So she says “I hope you arent taking that terrible shit Ozempic.”

So I said - no, I did it for a photoshoot (hardly gonna say I did it with mounjaro as my cholesterol was high). She asks me what I did. I said I ate a lot protein & veg and lifted very heavy weights (this bit is true). She then says she is vegetarian so can’t eat much protein. But her diet is very healthy.

But wtf why would anyone speak like that to a stranger?
