Disappointed with Mounjaro

India4 · 09/07/2025 12:56

this is my 5 week on Mounjaro, I moved up a dose on Monday. My appetite is suppressed which I am grateful for, no sickness or upset tum in fact I’m constipated! My issue is this, I have only lost 1 st in these weeks despite calorie deficit …is this normal ? I really thought I would lose a lot quickly.
Sorry to sound so negative but looking for advice to quell my ignorance &
fristration.

@InfoSecInTheCityI will no longer be measuring my weight in stones but in the equivalent number of adult bald eagles.

mollibu · 09/07/2025 14:19

I’ve lost a stone in 10 weeks and was pleased with that! What kind of loss was you expecting??

India4 · 09/07/2025 14:22

SilenceInside · 09/07/2025 13:09

That's loads! What on earth were you expecting? 1 to 2 pounds a week is the expected rate of loss, and some people don't lose anything at all until the higher doses. Honestly, to be disappointed at losing a stone in weight is... surprising.

I have been obese for so long, pre diabetic & feel ashamed…I probably was too expectant.
i feel so much better now so thankyou for your welcome response.

I had no idea other than reading that some had lost 8lbs in a week which deflated me somewhat.
so glad you responded it’s helped a lot…thankyou.

This narrative around weight loss drugs is so dangerous - and I’m on mounjaro!

a stone in a month is really fast to lose that much weight and the fact you’re disappointed is disturbing

Someone losing 8lbs in a week is not losing eight pounds of fat. It's water weight. It can whoosh off at the start of a diet but it isn't sustainable as an ongoing rate of loss - it's not physically possible!

Very rapid weight loss increases your risk of gallstones, loose skin and muscle loss. Losing 1-2lbs a week is a steady, healthy rate and that's still pretty fast. You need to eat plenty of protein, exercise to maintain your muscle mass and set your expectations more realistically.

Rainbowchicken · 09/07/2025 14:35

I've lost two stone in five months. I'm pretty happy with it. Your expectations are way off.

Magenta82 · 09/07/2025 14:36

8lbs in the first week us usually fluid because you are using up some of your glycogen stores. Only a small part of that would be fat.

When you are obese you need to lose fat, weight and fat are linked but they are not the same and losing weight to quickly tends to indicate you are losing more than just fat, usually muscle which is a reallybad thing. To get healthy you need to build up muscle, this speeds up your fat loss but can slow down weight loss which can be disheartening if you focus too much on weight.

Try looking at other metrics like measurements or body composition, losing inches or fat percentage is much more important than your weight.

I have experience with losing a lot of weight, I used to have a bmi of 48 and am now around 28.

Exercise is key, focus on building strength and muscle by lifting weights, doing yoga etc rather than on cardio.

Pivilepivling · 09/07/2025 14:37

Losing more than that wouldn’t be good for your health. That loss sounds great to me.

GrimlyPinemarten · 09/07/2025 14:40

I’ve lost on average 2lbs a month for the past 9 months. And I’m perfectly happy with that as it’s been totally painless. It all mounts up.

kumamon · 09/07/2025 14:45

I’m glad to see you’re feeling more positive after reading the comments. I did lose more than a stone in the first month. I lost a lot, really fast over the first five months. It wasn’t a good thing at all I promise you. I don’t regret Mounjaro - overall it’s been good, but if I was doing it again I’d reduce the dose and slow it down. Slow and steady is definitely the way.

boxtop · 09/07/2025 14:49

My friend's been on it for a year and has lost 1 dress size (18 to 16). Nothing she couldn't have done with a few months on myfitnesspal in my opinion but she seems happy so I'm keeping out of it.

Kindly, go back to all the information and guidance that your provider has undoubtedly given you, and read it again. Ignore social media entirely.

Also, you could join one of the amazing support threads on here - there’s one for every month of starting. They are a great resource. Good luck!

India4 · 09/07/2025 15:08

May I thankyou all for your kind responses…I feel so much better now I understand a little more.

That's a great loss for the first month! I lost 10lb in my first month, and 7lb per month on average in the 6 months I've been on it. You don't want to lose too quickly as you'll be losing muscle mass.

Bowling4soup · 09/07/2025 15:15

You’ve lost a stone? In less than 5 week?? That’s loads!! Especially on the starter dose

BedlingtonWillow · 09/07/2025 15:16

Just remember not to get disheartened if you lose less in the following months. The biggest loss usually comes in the first month because a lot of it is water weight.

marshmallowfinder · 09/07/2025 15:24

You should only be losing 1-2lbs a week for safe, gradual weight loss. You are not helping yourself by trying to lose it faster. You will end up with loads of loose skin. Why do people do this to themselves?

mini124 · 09/07/2025 15:26

I personally thing it’s the craziest weight loss treatment out there. What happens once you stop the treatment?

Weepixie · 09/07/2025 15:27

Doggymummar · 09/07/2025 13:05

I lose 4lb a month. A stone is an awful lot.

Me too, and I’m delighted with my loss even though some may say that I’m a slow loser.

Op, you’re being a bit unreasonable here and one way or another you’re going to have to get into a different mindset because you may find as you go along you settle down like so many others Into a pound a week weight loss also.

Gingercar · 09/07/2025 15:27

Why don’t you join one of the regular groups on here? (June 2025 starters latest thread probably covers when you started?). Then you share your experience with similar people and will see that your loss is absolutely normal/good.

Provided you’ve trained yourself into better eating and exercise habits, you can keep it off. The weight loss (and expense, in some cases!) provides a strong motivation to do so.

At least that’s been my experience so far.

SilenceInside · 09/07/2025 15:29

@India4 I agree that social media has a lot of responsibility for encouraging unrealistic expectations. It’s very good advice to go back to the literature from your prescriber for information about expected weight loss and rates of loss.

What was your starting weight, if you don’t mind saying?
