I took my first dose yesterday.

I have had severe effects from it all day today. I didn't realise that it would be this bad?

I have had severe nausea all day. I feel like I am going to throw up every ten minutes.

I have had really bad stomach pain.

I have had diarrohea.

I have had constant foul smelling sulphurus burps.

It's been awful.

I’ve had the vomiting. I’m 48 hours on and still vomiting. I want to lose weight but not like this.

Shmoigel · 29/06/2025 02:03

Mj is all about eating lots of protein. Get some bland chicken or ham to settle it

CountryVic · 29/06/2025 02:36

My first week was terrible too, I pretty much stayed in bed and kept up fluids. If you persevere, you may find you stay on the 2.5 for months Ike I did. I’m thankful I took a weeks holiday just in case of side effects, even now going up a dose can be really taxing on my body.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 29/06/2025 02:50

I had a bad reaction to my first dose. I took it on a Saturday, on the Monday I shat myself in a work meeting. Thank God it was online. It just happened with no warning. I had diarrhoea for ,2 days and was really worried about my second dose. That was bad but not as bad. It's gradually got better and better so I'm.glaf I stuck with it.

I've now been taking MJ since February and am on 7.5mg. the day after I jab I always have a bit of an upset tummy but nothing I cant cope with.

When I went from 2.5 to 5mg I did two weeks at 3.75 to minimize the effects which seemed to help.

Only you know if you can put up with the side effects long enough to keep trying. Hopefully you will find things get better as your body gets used to the medication.

They sound like the sort of side effects I would expect to get with such a drug and they don't sound unduly severe from your description.

Have you got some Gaviscon? Or Rennies? You could get some sugar free mints to mask the burping at work.

They do sound severe and debilitating. Stop being a dick.

Elmo230885 · 29/06/2025 06:47

I had this around 48 hours after the first and second jabs; was physically sick several times over night on two occasions. They were the worst side effects. Nausea to varying degrees for around 6 weeks ( took anti-emetics when it was really bad but kept to sipping water and Gaviscon mostly ). Sulphur burps were on and off for a similar amount of time.
Wasn't nice but I persevered. I took MJ from July 24 to Feb 25. Lost 5 stone. I've completely changed my diet, I snack so much less than I used to and have gotten used to smaller portions, I've learned to deal better with my 'food noise'. It's been 4 months since I stopped and I haven't put on a single kg. I have kept up exercise too.
I have around a stone left to get to a healthy BMI but I want to know I can maintain first.

That's my long winded way of saying that if you really want it you need to push through.
I took a multivitamin and had some high protein drinks for when I really couldn't stomach anything. At least 2l of water per day too on top of normal drinks. Got many steps in at work walking to the further away toilet many times per day when I drank loads!

Good luck 🤞

BusWankers · 29/06/2025 06:51

Oh god, I'm about to start mj

I never get side effects from medication... But
...

Now very worried 😫

2025mj · 29/06/2025 07:19

Sorry to be blunt but I started in March this year, I shit myself for nearly 4 days straight.
I remember crying in the bath because it was burning. I remember wondering why I ever did this to myself.
I had the sulpher burps and sickness too.

But it really did stop, as my body adjusted to it
I've gone up to 5mg and 7.5 since and I've had a bit of sickness the first 24 hours, nothing like what I ever experienced. Hopefully you feel better soon, if you haven't already get some pepto bismol down you x

Boliviabae · 28/06/2025 23:09

Today I had two fruit smoothies and a greek yoghurt, at different times, as I was so ill the thought of eating something solid made me feel like i was going to throw up

Are you diabetic? My GP said that if you are not diabetic the side effects will be be more intense if you get them.

Digaj1984 · 29/06/2025 07:22

I injected for first time yesterday. No noticeable symptoms until bedtime then bam. Bad nausea and feeling wired so couldn't sleep until 1am, then awake every hour. All the people I read about or spoken to were like ah nah, we didn't have side effects go for it 😆 if I'm seeing out the month and if it's always like this I'm stopping. I can't deal with lack of sleep with 2 neuro children and demanding career 😭

2025mj · 29/06/2025 07:22

Also I was told, if you don't eat and drink clean the days before your injection then you are more likely to have sickness and diarrhea, not sure how true that is but its definitely something I wasn't aware of

threeeggsontoast · 29/06/2025 07:38

How are you feeling this morning OP? From what I’ve read, severe side effects are quite rare. If you’re still not right this morning, best thing is to eat some protein (I just had some eggs) and get yourself to a big chemist for some Pepto Bismol.

Obviously everyone is different and if you suspect you’re having a reaction, it’s wise to get checked out. But for many people, this does settle down in a day or so.

perimenopoppet · 29/06/2025 08:02

That sounds awful OP I hope it’s a little better this morning. I’ve not had anything as extreme - only actually been sick a couple of times - but you are definitely not the only one as even the replies here show. Be careful of dehydration - if you are able to get to a Sunday chemist (or someone can go for you) they can advise about anti sickness meds or Imodium type drugs if appropriate to manage your side effects until they wear off. Keep sipping water is the most important thing.

For my worst nausea days I have found slimfast drinks a lot easier to stomach than protein shakes (they are smooth not grainy) and feels like they line my stomach and settle it. I’ve come to recognise I feel sick now when I am hungry but don’t always realise I am hungry on this drug. While they wouldn’t be something I want to rely on all the time, they can get some calories and protein in when I’m too queasy for suggestions like “eat some chicken/ham/eggs” even reading that makes my stomach turn when feeling nauseous.

if you can bear it it really is worth giving it at least one more chance. The benefits are so huge. What did you eat in the 24h before jabbing? There is a suggestion that can have an impact on initial side effects. If it was anything heavy carb or high fat it might be part of the issue. Before your second jab eat really really ‘clean’ so that’s all that’s in your stomach.

perimenopoppet · 29/06/2025 08:07

Also it’s off label use, so you should do your own research and if possible chat to provider (but they won’t advise it as they aren’t allowed to). I’ve read examples on here of people who had similar issues and dropped down to doing 30click half doses of the 2.5 pen, taking 1.25mg for a few weeks first to let their bodies acclimatise more slowly, and then gradually increasing it up to 2.5. It’s something to look into when you feel a bit better this week. If you’ve come so far to make the decision to start this, you don’t want to let this derail you. As the many threads here will show this medicine is life changing.

Doggymummar · 29/06/2025 08:17

I'm probably not a great example, but I threw up everyday for the first nine months, I was on Rybelsus originally. It was just once every morning but it was horrible. I felt it was important to push through. I'm over six stone down now and haven't had anything major since switching to Mounjaro almost a year ago. Only you can weigh up the pros and cons.

Most people could not deal with this level of throwing up.

Bananafofana · 29/06/2025 08:24

OP it sounds like you’re in the small percentage of people who have a very strong reaction. I’m sorry 😔, hopefully it will ease. Remember if you are losing weight there is no need to go up a dose. I’ve stayed on 2.5mg and lost 2 stone even though it’s apparently a “non therapeutic dose”.

(not helpful I know but for people reading and worrying about side effects - I felt nauseous once, briefly, zero side effects otherwise)

Koinophobia · 29/06/2025 08:29

I stopped due to severe side effects too.
In my case on top of diarrhea that was happening at night as well as all day, I got a fast heart rate at night waking me from dead sleep with panic attack type feelings and then keeping me awake the rest of the night. It was unsustainable for me :(

creekyjohn · 29/06/2025 08:43

Boliviabae · 29/06/2025 00:48

Ooh i can't sleep as I have such bad stomach pain and i have been retching for hours

What is this medication doing to our body?

Side effects of medication should not be this severe.

It makes me wonder how safe it is.

It’s perfectly safe, despite you having had a severe reaction to it. I’m sorry you are not getting on with it but that doesn’t mean it’s unsafe.

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/06/2025 08:53

What did you eat in the 24 hrs before you took the injection?

You need to understand how Mounjaro works.

“This medication works by activating two receptors called GLP-1 and GIP to increase the level of incretins – hormones - in the body. It works by helping your body to produce more insulin when needed. It also reduces the amount of glucose, or sugar, produced by the liver, and slows down how quickly food is digested.”

If you have a belly full of food then it’s likely to sit badly if digestion is slowed down, you also don’t want to be fighting the meds by ingesting lots of high sugar foods you want to be working with it by having a good balance of protein, fibre, healthy fats, complex carbs in the form of whole grains and green veg.

If you had for example a KFC before your injection then it will take longer to process and could very well cause nausea and sulfur burps.

No drug is ‘perfectly safe’.

It’s not though really. vomiting constantly could make OP dehydrated and I threw up my medication for other serious conditions. No drug is completely safe.

Cheesesteakyum · 29/06/2025 09:00

I’d ditch the smoothies and go for plain proteins e.g. little omelette, chicken/ rice/veggie soup etc.

make sure your drinking plenty water maybe with some electrolyte.

I also like rennie deflatine for the burps.

Define safe.

I don't define something that gives me extreme sickness and pain as safe.

I don't think my reaction is more severe than a lot of peoples.

My reaction happens to a lot of people.

My mother had to stop taking mounjaro eatlier this year, as she also got extremely sick after taking it

I think that people just don't about it a lot, as they don't want to scare others.

It's been used for over 20 years, if it wasn't safe, it wouldn't have been used for 2 decades...
