Why are some people so angry about people lying to get MJ?

Roxietrees · 16/06/2025 17:04

The only conclusion I can come to is pure jealousy. They don’t want overweight people (with bmi 25-29) getting slim, they want to be the only ones who get to be slim and hot. Less competition that way.
I’ve seen some ridiculous statements on here, one to someone with a bmi of 29.8 who lied to get it - someone said they were “unbelievably stupid and irresponsible” and “putting their life at risk”….how can they possibly be putting their life at risk anymore than someone with a bmi of 30?! Cos being 0.2 lighter suddenly makes the medication dangerous 🤣
Should people with a bmi of 28 binge eat to put on enough weight to make them eligible? Isn’t that far more dangerous?
If the meds really were that dangerous to slimmer people there is no way you’d be able to get them by submitting a few photos and self-reporting your weight online.
I actually do meet the criteria but I have plenty of friends on it who don’t and I have zero judgement. Some of them have been overweight their whole lives and are unable to shift that 2-3 stone. Why should they have to stay overweight when an obese person can easily get down to a bmi of 19 with injections? I suspect that if you weren’t allowed to use them after your bmi got down to 30 all the righteous, judgmental people on them would start fudging their own numbers on the scales.
It just feels like a bit of an attitude amongst some people of “this is our thing and we don’t want you to have it”….disguised as concern about the health impacts…which is so obviously bullshit. Why aren’t the same people ranting about how easy it is for alcoholics to get alcohol? Or why aren’t they focusing on young anorexic people obtaining MJ (which is happening and is genuinely concerning)? It’s just so obviously jealousy. They’ll be available to people with bmi 25+ soon anyway

Lying then makes them tighten up on the rules and criteria

i took mj last year when it first came out. Fairly straightforward to get it. But look how it’s changed! Videos need do to be sent in now!

feelingbleh · 16/06/2025 17:16

Exactly as pp says it ruins it for everyone. Their are so many restrictions and rules in place for everything in the world purely because of other people's stupidity and selfishness.

dustydvd · 16/06/2025 17:16

Because the nhs will be the ones to pick up the pieces if it all goes wrong.

Snap! 🤣

But how will someone taking WLI with a BMI of 29.8 be any more likely to ‘go wrong’ than a person with a BMI of 30.2?

@Roxietrees i agree with a lot of the sentiment of your post. I think the arbitrary cut off is ridiculous and there should be more robust prescribing practices with it available to those with a BMI of over 25. I’m fine with the introduction of videos etc - what we should be doing is protecting those with eating disorders from being able to access the drug rather than gatekeeping from the overweight who in many cases are simply the obese of tomorrow… I’d put your hard hat on though because I feel we are very much in the minority on here…

Bilbette · 16/06/2025 17:23

Slim doesn’t necessarily mean hot, however slim trumps morbidly obese in terms of perceived attractiveness which gives people ‘slim privilege’

the main reason I don’t want people lying to procure MJ is because it will make it harder and harder for people who need it for health reasons to be prescribed, taking more time and increasing costs

i don’t care if sized 12 Suzy wants a ‘beach body to die for babes’ but I do care if ‘Andrea the anorexic’ manages to get hold of it

Checks need to be in place, but not so prohibitive that it becomes almost impossible to buy and costs a fortune

Mj4me · 16/06/2025 17:23

I've just got it represcribed with a BMI of 23.

SilenceInside · 16/06/2025 17:25

I’m not angry, so I don’t know why the people you seen are apparently angry.

Having said that, lying to obtain prescription only medication is not something that anyone should be advising or recommending. Even if the person is only slightly outside the cut off. As I said, I’m not angry about that, it’s just an observation.

These medications will not soon be available to people with a BMI of 25+ (who don’t otherwise meet the existing criteria) simply because the possible minor benefits of losing weight from slightly overweight don’t outweigh the possible risks. The drug companies who manufacture Wegovy and Mounjaro are researching into treating other health conditions, but the MHRA is never going to approve the use of GLP1s for lifestyle reasons rather than health based ones.

tinyspiny · 16/06/2025 17:32

I’ve no issue with people lying about their bmi I do have an issue with people lying about their current medical conditions , which has caused a bit of angst on a group I’m on for a health condition . I’m not jealous I’m a normal bmi and with my medical conditions would be an idiot to use WLI even if I needed them . My issue with people lying is because the particular medical issue can be severely affected by some of the side effects and that will then mean the NHS picking up a big bill to repair the damage and that is aside from the fact that the prescriber has the right to know to whom they are prescribing without having to assume that they are being lied to .

When some with anorexia uses it and dies and then their family campaign against it and sue the nhs

You’re wrong. If you’re taking it due to diabetes and not weight loss then the criteria is different, you can’t fake diabetes to your doctor, they will have your whole medical history to look at. Also those taking it for health reasons don’t be buying it from private companies they’ll be getting it on the NHS.

Because you’re only meant to take it if you’re overweight (or for other medical reasons).

Branleuse · 16/06/2025 17:41

People are thick. Thats why.

Mounjaro seems to be one of these things that the more research is done, the more benefits are found that are much further reaching than just losing weight.

So what will you do when the anorexic buys her jobs from the local beautician? Or lies to the online pharmacy and wears a fat suit and fat makeup, or steals from a friend??

Are we going to ban everything because someone may misuse it?

spoonbillstretford · 16/06/2025 17:43

I think it will soon open up to be available to anyone from BMI 25+ regardless of additional conditions. I got it on the basis of high BP and PCOS at BMI 29. BP is back to low/normal at BMI 25.8, but I intend to carry on to BMI 24 if possible. I've had hardly any side effects, so it definitely doesn't affect you more/worse when you don't have as much to lose.

Where are people getting it from with a healthy BMI? I thought you had to submit photos now? Previous poster said she’s just been represcribed at a BMI of 23. I just don’t understand how?

Did you quote the wrong post, your reply has precisely fuck all to do with my post

soupyspoon · 16/06/2025 17:45

None of this would be an issue if the NHS just had it prescribed by GPs as a matter of course for those who need it with consultation and oversight from their own local surgery. Not an issue.

Witchypooforyou · 16/06/2025 17:45

People are comfortable around fat people but when they start losing weight they feel threatened as they have probably taking the new place as the fat friend. You see it all the time, comments start about how they shouldn’t lose too much weight and they question their own size due to insecurity. But yes, very much jealously. When the former fat friend becomes slim a vacancy opens up.

Maintenance dose - you can switch supplier.

I’m BMI 27 and can’t get it for love nor money!
