Mounjaro disappointment :(

Stars12 · 12/05/2025 14:38

I am 5 days into Mounjaro and feeling a bit disappointed! I AM STARVING! I did lots of reading and talking with other people on it before making the decision to start. Everyone I know has had appetite suppression almost immediately, no food noise, even D&V! I have had no change at all! I am literally relying on willpower alone and still want to eat everything! I’ve even checked the pen to make sure it actually went in 🤦🏽‍♀️. Please can anyone reassure me that this has been the same for them?!

How much are you eating? Have you cut back too far? Need more protein? Need more filling up on other foods and snacks?

Any diet which leaves you starving isn't a sustainable diet anyway.

ScrewedByFunding · 12/05/2025 14:39

It doesn't sound like you did enough reasearch. This is perfectly normal as 2.5 isn't a therapeutic dose, it's just to ease your body in to a new medication. Chill and keep going.

MissConductUS · 12/05/2025 14:40

Some patients are non responsive to the GLP1 drugs. I know for Wegovy, it's about 15%.

You may need to ask your doctor to try a different medication with you.

Winter2020 · 12/05/2025 14:41

Just checking as you mention the pen that you did turn it the 60 clicks to the number "1" before injecting. I have heard of people injecting without turning the pen.

She's been on it 5 days! At a non therapeutic dose! This is OTT 😂

StartingApril2025 · 12/05/2025 14:44

It’s early days the 2.5mg is only to get your body used to it! On the forum I’m on lots of ppl had zero effect on first week or two. For me I had more effect on first few days than I have now. If you are starving then eat, eat your total calories to remain in a calorie deficit and aim for protein and fibre rich. Don’t give up yet- would be a different story if your were in 10mg or 15 mg and zero effect but your only early days.

InfoSecInTheCity · 12/05/2025 14:46

I think for me it helped that I’d been dieting for a few weeks before starting the MJ so was already past that initial starvation feeling that you get when reducing carbs/calories and increasing protein. I was also already ‘eating clean’ so when I took the first jab it felt like a quick response.

Focus on the quality of what you eat for the first few weeks rather than the calorie break down, lean meat, good fats, green non-starchy veg, complex carbs not high sugar refined carbs. Track it all so you know what you are eating and how it breaks down into carb/protein/fat and keep going with the injections. Give it some time.

Also, and I cannot say this vociferously enough, DRINK LOTS OF WATER! About 2lts a day is the goal. It will help you feel less hungry and your body uses it in the process of breaking down and expelling fat. If you don’t have enough you will retain water, you also won’t break down fat.

MereNoelle · 12/05/2025 14:47

It didn’t start working for me straight away but I didn’t expect it to, as 2.5mg is a non therapeutic dose. I didn’t really get any appetite suppression until week 2/3, when it had built up in my system.

MynameisJune · 12/05/2025 14:50

I think you need to manage your expectations a bit. 2.5mg is just the starter dose.

Yes for some people this will be all they need and it will work for them. But generally most people need to titrate up doses to get the full effect.

FortyElephants · 12/05/2025 14:51

Stop stressing. Even if you did get suppression from that low dose for the first few weeks it will definitely wear off by day 5. All this evens out over time but you have to be patient! Don't let yourself get starving, go eat a healthy snack and plan a healthy dinner. Chill.

Highly recommend looking at this chap on TikTok - does some really good work around comparing food options across a day and showing where you can make errors in calorie and quantity whilst still enjoying an ice cream or similar of an evening.

I am aware that it is a therapeutic dose and I wasn’t expecting it to be a miracle…but I suppose I was expecting to feel SOMETHING! I have tried every diet under the sun and I fail because I am obsessed with food and harassed by the noise that comes with that, so I can never stick to it. I was just so excited to not have to constantly think/be tempted about food so I can stay in a calorie deficit and lose weight over a prolonged period of time…I’ve 4/5 stone to shift! The TDEE calculator says 1350 calories for me to lose 2lb a week. I just wanted M to help me stick to that 😬

And it (probably) will. Just not 5 days in.

You need to give it time. 2.5mg did nothing for me and I lost no weight. I ate pretty normally and felt a little nausea in weeks 2 and 3.
I have now been on the drug for 11 months and lost 30kgs. It’s been consistent and so easy compared to my past efforts. No binging, still have appetite and occasional hunger, but that is not a bad thing. We still need to have some self control.
There seems to be way too much airtime given to people who have ‘lost a stone in a week’ type posts on social media. This is not healthy. Mounjaro is amazing, but it should not be a quick fix. Patience most definitely a virtue in this case.
Good luck with the future. It is truly life changing!

Flyswats · 12/05/2025 15:14

Can you also have some talk therapy to help with the obsessive food relationship? I think that is going to be needed in combination with the drug for it all to work for you in the longer term.

Good luck as well, I hope the effects of it kick in soon.

Thank you. I wouldn’t usually believe the social media hype- it is friends who actually have lost a big amount in the first week and over a stone after the first 2.5 pen, never hungry. I’m just sitting here thinking, how?! I know I need to give it time , I’m just desperate for it not to fail this time! Well done to you- you must feel great! 😊

Yes I absolutely need some therapy regarding my relationship with food. As I’ve got older I’ve realised it’s not as simple as I just eat too much, it’s much deeper than that. Unfortunately can’t afford therapy and Mounjaro 🤣

There are sometimes places where you can pay what you can for a few sessions. I don't have any helpful links but I remember a friend of mine using this resource a few years ago - I think she got 5 sessions and it really helped her.

SilenceInside · 12/05/2025 15:21

People react differently to the medication, some will get suppression almost straight away and others it can take till 5mg or any of the other higher doses even the max 15mg before it starts to work. For a few, it will never really work. So 5 days into taking it is far far too soon to be disappointed.

BlueTitShark · 12/05/2025 15:33

Another one here who felt nothing at 2.5mg. I actually still felt very little at 5mg too.
But 7.5mg? Suddenly it’s all be o ing so much easier!

Having said that, I totally get the heart sinking feeling. I also wondered why I was spending so much money for nothing 😂

Hold tight!

TequilaNights · 12/05/2025 16:05

Give it time, but do not rush, allow your body time to get used to the injection.

I was going to say similar.

I was a bit disappointed after my first week, then I re-read the instructions before I had my second injection and there’s no way I turned it all the way to 1.

It’s definitely working for me now, and I’m on week three, but second proper dose.

Thank you! I just wanted to know I wasn’t alone! I was starting to think I was beyond help- even with drugs! 😂 I just knew it would be my luck that it wouldn’t work as effectively for me, as everyone else. Fingers crossed it improves and the £££ is worth it for us both!

2.5mg for me was like injecting water!! I didn’t have a single side effect and my suppression was basically zero bar the odd day where I wouldn’t snack but still ate all of my meals!

I started on 5mg Friday and can feel suppression now. It’s not overwhelming as if I can’t finish my meals, but it’s enough for me to not think about food during the day and having a small lunch and being satisfied by it!

I hope 5mg works for me as I’m not keen to move up the doses too quickly!
