Is this GP prescribed? Can you contact your doctor to get some advice on whether you should be experiencing this side effect?

SilviaSnuffleBum · 09/05/2025 12:58

Nausea is a very common side effect, as well as reduced appetite.
If you are struggling with 2.5, then perhaps Mounjaro isnt for you. However, I'd suggest you speak to your prescriber, rather than Mumsnet.

Crunchymum · 09/05/2025 13:01

Could you have possibly picked up a bug / illness alongside taking MJ?

Could you be pregnant?

Speak to your prescriber if you are worried.

Passion01 · 09/05/2025 13:08

I'm currently waiting for my prescriber to get back to me. I was just wanting to see if anyone else experienced this even 5 days after injection. Thanks for replies.

No I definitely don't think it's a bug xx

Are you drinking enough fluids? I find I don't feel thirsty on MJ at all and need to remind myself to drink water, if I don't I get nauseous

UntilTheDolphinFlies · 09/05/2025 13:22

I find you have to really watch what you eat. Cut out fatty and oily foods, sugar, definitely alcohol, some people say coffee. It will help to control the nausea.

SilenceInside · 09/05/2025 13:24

Of course this will leave. It takes 5 days for half of the medication to leave your system, and then it will tail off after that. If you don’t take another injection then the medication will be gone from your system in a few more days.

Nausea is a common side effect, and appetite suppression is an expected effect. Not being able to eat at all is not common but some people do react strongly to the medication. Try to eat small amounts of very plain and easy to digest food regularly, even if you don’t feel like eating.

Your prescriber will likely give you advice on how to manage the nausea, which is the same advice as how to manage nausea from any cause. They may also suggest you stop taking it if you find the nausea unmanageable.

ThirdStorm · 09/05/2025 13:26

I was very sensitive to MJ, I've lost 5st and never went above 2.5mg. In the first month I had to eat very plainly and low fat and I was very low cal for a while. After a month I found I could eat a bit more normally with a wider variety. Good luck.

Passion01 · 09/05/2025 13:34

@SilenceInside Thanks this is very sensible advice. I have anxiety so I'm prone to catastrophising things. My provider just got back to me and said exactly what you said lol. Thankyou to everyone for all of your advice...im probably not eating well enough which is making the nausea worse. Yes trying to drink as much water as possible! Thanks everyone!

Good luck and try and stick with it! Your body does get used to the drug and it gets easier. The results are amazing and definitely worth it.

edwinbear · 09/05/2025 13:48

I found protein shakes or those slim fast shakes were great for days when I really couldn't fancy food but knew I needed to eat. It can get to a point where you feel ill because you've not eaten, as opposed to it being the actual Mounjaro if that makes sense?

ThirdStorm · 09/05/2025 13:51

@Passion01 I found protein shakes really helpful during the first few weeks, maybe try and see if you can find one you can tolerate? It shouldn't replace food obviously but in these early weeks if that's all you can manage at least you are having something.

LoveSkaMusic · 09/05/2025 14:07

I've been lucky in terms of side affects. I'm starting week three tomorrow, so still on 2.5 and the only thing I've noticed is that I have a really dry mouth unless I keep super-well hydrated.

User5274959 · 09/05/2025 14:14

Some people are just very sensitive to it.

If you want to continue you could consider a half dose next time?

Is your BMI at the lower end of what qualifies?

Passion01 · 09/05/2025 15:47

Do you think the bmi could be a factor? X

OP posts:
User5274959 · 09/05/2025 17:36

i'm not a clinician but it seems common sense to me that the same dose might have a greater effect on someone with a lower body mass than someone with a higher body mass. So was just interested if you are at the lower end.

Cherry8809 · 09/05/2025 17:37

I’m on 2.5mg and I’ve had zero side effects

What’s your BMI?

I wouldn’t have thought BMI would be a factor because you have people who are now on maintenance with a low ‘healthy’ BMI

Why don’t you join us on the May 25 Mounjaro starters thread? You’ll be able to get lots of advice and support from others - might help you feel less anxious

I second the drink - I don’t have a natural thirst trigger for some reason so I’m perpetually dehydrated I now have a bottle of water at hand all the time because now I’m not hungry I’m not eating water either. Also green apples helped me a lot

TravellersLip · 09/05/2025 19:34

I didn’t have any side effects until I got to 5 and then had really bad stomach / diarrhoea. I found avoiding fatty food helped to sort it, along with using Huel shakes for breakfast / lunch. Now 7.5 - odd issue now and again but nothing significant.

I have read that injecting in the thigh / back of arm helps, in line with the instructions.

Passion01 · 09/05/2025 20:53

My BMI is 28

Poppyseed14 · 10/05/2025 13:42

Try taking a half dose instead OP. I never got beyond 7.5mg and I always had to go up a little bit at a time. I couldn't go from 2.5 straight to 5 or I'd have felt so ill. And plenty of water. X

Catty123Ma · 10/05/2025 15:03

hey @Poppyseed14could you tolerate the initial 2.5 mg or did you need to start lower. Just about to get going but I’m worried about the side effects and would really like to start lower and slow if possible.. it’s a share that the regular protocol doesn’t enable this! I could be fine on the 2.5mg so should probs just see how it goes but I have two smallies running around too 😵‍💫🥴
