I've been eating a lot of bananas I wonder if it could be that? I'm not doing anything else differently that I can think of!
I do tend to move the scales around so it could be that I suppose, note to future self, keep the scales in the same spot.

I'll weigh again in a couple of days to see if the number has gone down, thanks for the replies 😔

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 05/02/2025 19:53

Bananas are relatively high in calories compared to other fruit but if you are counting them as you track your calorie deficit they shouldn’t make a difference. It will be the moving of the scales, especially if you are moving between carpet and hard floors.

FWIW once upon a time I used to mark the place on the floor for my scales with washi tape 😂 crazy old Glasgow sandstone tenement did not mix well with scales!

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/02/2025 20:01

Oh it's the moving scales I'm sure of it.

It will be moving the scales that's doing it.

Scales are like 'The Princess and the Pea' in the world of electronics, one of the little feet is slightly less in contact with the floor than the other 3 because of a minor imperfection in the floor surface or a speck of dirt and you gain 5lb.

It's like how everyone knows that no matter what brand you buy and where you get the ink, every printer is a complete bastard that will refuse to work on the 2 days a year you are desperately in need of a printer.

Silly question

How do you up your protein?

Chick peas are good right?
I may try to bake some with tuna and quinoa

I eat lots of chicken and put greek yoghurt in my fruit smoothies.

I also cheat and buy chocolate dessert protein powder - a couple of scoops plus some cocoa powder, milk and ice cubes = a pretend McDonald's chocolate milkshake and lots of protein 😀

@claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer have you ever tried supplementing with Omega 3 oils - fish oil or flaxseed oil in capsules, for your dry skin?

I'm not crazy about fish oil and take flaxseed oil - fish oil is better for the body if you can tolerate it (its in a more available to the body form whereas flaxseed oil required an additional metabolisim before its available to utilise) .

I studied nutritional medicine in another lifetime - every cell of the body needs omega 3's to function and if its in short supply the body will prioritise internal organs over skin. Cronically dry skin in the absense of contact/allergy issues, was seen as a sign that we need more Omega 3. They always advised to supplement with your chosen oil until your skin is no longer dry - it will go to internal organs etc first and when you skin sorts itself out then you know you have enough.

When I supplment wtih Omega 3 regularly my skin is lovely.

Love the sound of that biocircuit.

Oooh that’s so interesting, thank you. Can’t cope with fish oil but might have to try the flaxseed ones! My skin is ok in summer (though still sensitive) but so so dry in winter

hellohellooo · 05/02/2025 22:01

Thank you all for the protein tips :)

alltablenochairs · 05/02/2025 22:14

Cottage cheese here. More to the point Longley Farm pineapple cottage cheese. The only correct way to eat this is with a spoon and the tub. I also make my own Greek yoghurt. A bit faffy but much, much better than stuff you can buy in the shops. In short make a batch of yoghurt then strain it overnight in the fridge.

I'm ashamed to say I don't have a skincare regime. Neither do I own or wear any makeup. One of the only benefits of having EDS is that I still have stretchy, mainly wrinkle free skin (and bendy stretchy joints as well ffs). I bet itll all change overnight knowing my shitty luck though.

QueenOfHiraeth · 05/02/2025 22:28

@WeAllHaveWings I have rubbish nasolabial folds too but also have the marionette lines to match and join them to my crinkly neck! Short of a facelift or a large bulldog clip behind each ear I think I'm stuck with them

dimples76 · 06/02/2025 07:27

I have just weighed in after my 1st week and I have lost 2.5kg and so feeling great about that. The most I have ever lost in a week on any diet has been 2lbs.

I have been listening to the Thin Line podcast that someone recommended up thread. I was struck by one of the contributors saying that she thought that most people would not stay on it long term, not just because the money but also because life is less joyful without being able to indulge in a special meal once in a while. At this stage I can't imagine that but it got me thinking that as well as improving my eating and fitness habits I maybe need to think about other ways to replace the big role food has in my life. I love cooking but especially baking and I think as well as using food as a comfort, a distraction when bored etc it is part of my love language. So as well as my weight training and zumba maybe I need a new hobby?

It was quite positive to hear that I do need to stay on it indefinitely that there are pills and less frequent injections under development which would reduce cost.

I like the sound of cottage cheese and pineapple- will have to get me some of that

Carolwithane · 06/02/2025 08:00

Well I took the plunge and weighed myself, in 3 weeks I've lost 6lbs. Not going to lie I'm a little disappointed

Anyhoo...... we keep going! Felt hunger creeping back in the last few days so considering uping dosage to 5mg from next week

WafflingDreamer · 06/02/2025 08:28

Weigh in number 18
SW 21st 9lb (BMI 44.8)
CW 18st 7lb
GW 11st 9lb (BMI 24.1)
3lb down this week
Losses so far; 4, 1, 5, 1, 3, 4, 2, 2, 2, 4, 1, +3, 5, 1, 3, 2, 4, 3
Total loss 44lbs / 3st 2lb
Mini goal 17st 9lb by 20/3 - total loss 4st/56lbs

My progress photos are definitely showing my loss, I'm hoping my next goal will help me move into size 20 clothes but I really need to figure out some exercise I can introduce other than walking

6lb is great in 3 weeks, lots of people don't lose at all on 2.5mg. All those little losses add up to big losses, you are almost at half a stone so if you carried on at this rate you'd be at nearly a stone in 6/7 weeks. I'm on week 18 and have lost 3st 2lb, but my average loss is 2.5lb a week

I lost 4lbs in 4 weeks on 2.5mg, then 13lbs in 4 weeks on 5mg. So don't worry yet.

Aww - I hate that feeling of disappointment - brings back all those horrible SW/WW weekly weigh ins of shame! I'm not weighing on a regular basis - still get that feeling of dread when I step on the scales, and I'm always going to be a bit disappointed that it's not more, because I think once we start on a journey like this, we just want it done with!

But... this thread and the previous ones are so good, because they keep making me see and recognise that we're all in it for the long haul. I've never had much patience, but need to accept that this is medication to help treat the disease of obesity and it doesn't happen all at once - like any illness, it takes time to be treated.

6lbs is virtually half a stone though - and it's a consistent 2lbs a week, for 3 weeks, not a sudden loss and then nothing - so I think that's great. Can you imagine just consistently losing weight each week and your body feeling better and better as the months go by - that's what's going to happen 😊

(sorry - being ridiculously positive - talk to me on Sunday when it's the day before my next injection and I'm grumpy and miserable 😁)

Carolwithane · 06/02/2025 08:55

Aw I know! Need to give myself a shake and get back in the game!

Thanks for the reality check, you are all correct of course. No more moaning it's not an overnight miracle with 0 effort and sacrifice 😆

I've almost lost an elephants penis and now I have something new to be terrified of!! 🤣

I was thinking last night how 25 kilos is a very well packed medium sized suitcase plus carry on. So I've lost a good holiday in weight!

absolutely - as well as calorie deficit, exercise, hydration and MJ we need ooodles of patience & lashings of persistence.

I think it's still possible to enjoy food though, just maybe not so much of it!
maybe it is about balance, getting a level of the meds where it is just effective enough long term, but not so much suppression to put us off food completely.

the thing about MJ that is different for "normal dieting" is if you persist and you are patient you can almost guarantee that:

  • in 6 weeks you will have lost 12 pounds;
  • in 12 weeks you will have lost 24 pouunds;
  • in 24 weeks you will have lost 48 pounds.
So by August you will be 48 pounds/22 kilos/3.5 stone down.

Does that sound more encouraging?

That's strange to think of that isn't it, a whole suitcase! I've lost about 20kg so nearly that too. No wonder it is a bit easier to climb up the stairs!

I've always enjoyed cooking, reverse engineering restaurant meals at home, making simple stuff & making extravagant stuff. Right now I wouldnt care if I never cooked anything again though I know this is the MJ talking and things might change.

I expect my focus will change - I dont think I will ever be as into cooking as I was when I was more housebound with kids. I welcome the change to food being more health/fuel and not a hobby or passtime.

But I will still be prepping food as I want to eat fresh healthy non-processed tasty food - I expect my focus will be more on nutrition/health/pleasure rather than pleasure/decadence/entertainment.

You can still be a foodie with a focus on spices, herbs, pomegrantates, rather than a focus on nachos, pulled pork, cream and butter.

I've been a single parent for years and my life was restricted by that in lots of ways. Now my kids are older I'm rediscovering what I like to do, and how I want to spend my time. I'm kind of busy - lots on, lots to enjoy, and I need to rest. So I am welcome cutting food as a hobbie/passtime out & replacing it with perhaps more time for sewing new clothes for my new body.

It's weird because I've always hated cooking and food prep - always said if I was a squillionaire I would either have a personal chef, or eat out every night!

But since MJ, I've got more interested in what I should and can eat - I'm really enjoying preparing my meals, with tons of baby spinach and cherry toms, different meats and lots of greek yog. I've bought a blender (unthinkable a month ago!) and am whipping up different smoothies. Basically I've had a food personality transplant - I suppose because it feels important to eat what I can in the right way?

I don't feel like I'm on a diet at all -it's more like a puzzle, where I enjoy figuring out how to get protein into my body whilst not feeling massively hungry.

Also helps that I'm not hungover/drinking most of the time... 🙄😀
