Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

I’m good with it staying the same consistently, I still get hungry and eat small meals. I make better choices all day every day to be honest.

Brill! Just saying we don’t all experience suppression all week, regardless of the dose we’re on.

wizzywig · 29/01/2025 18:44

I'm on 10mg now and I started on a bmi of 28. Lower doses didn't touch the sides

PigInAHouse · 29/01/2025 18:45

I should say I’m not on MJ any more since reaching goal back in September, but the effects always wore off towards the end of the week.

Dunkou · 30/01/2025 05:10

@Tinydancer123 I think you're maybe right about it being an autoimmune response, something like 24% of people develop antibodies to MJ. Though in the paper I just looked at it said it didn't affect effectiveness or side-effects. I never have any reaction at all to flu or covid jabs so not something I've come across before.

Feel a lot better this morning, though still have some sinus pain, ear ache and headache. Will try and get more sleep and hope they alleviate! I think I'll wait 9 days for next jab and lower it to 1.25 and if there are still side-effects and no/little weight loss I'll call it a day with MJ.

Hope your jab goes well today.

Tinydancer123 · 30/01/2025 12:31

@Dunkou I think the response we had fits with this . I saw a specialist after my issues a number of years back and this is all they could put it down too, I really hope today is better for you.
I have decide if I have it today or tommorrow. Today is day 6. However I did lose again and I am concious of what you said about having extra dose in my body. Particuarly as I reacted so badly, that said the weekend is manic and perhaps tonight and tommorrow is best to have the symptoms and ride it out at work.

Dunkou · 30/01/2025 13:14

@Tinydancer123 you could take marginally less, to offset it being a day early. 2.3mg or so?

Maybe yes- how would I do this with the clicks ? I am really worried I did too much the first one but I followed instructions and it said it was however many clicks to the one !

Dunkou · 30/01/2025 13:32

@Tinydancer123 it's 60 clicks to a full dose

2.3mg is 55clicks
2mg is 48 clicks

So you count the clicks and then just inject until it goes back to the beginning

Tinydancer123 · 30/01/2025 14:10

Oh gosh thankfully I did do 60 clicks. I think I will go with the 2.3 - great suggestion ! Thank you so much . Is it best to leave it out of the fridge before I inject ?

I don't, I don't think it makes any difference to me. Some people find it stings a bit straight from fridge.

Dunkou · 30/01/2025 14:26

Forgot my key news in all the side effect talk. The scales actually moved down today for first time in 10 days.

So I've lost 5lbs in 4.5 weeks, which I'm happy with.

Tinydancer123 · 30/01/2025 20:17

Amazing @Dunkou well done ! I have decided to inject in the morning. This evening I had a few more snacks nothing majot but a glass of fizz x

Tinydancer123 · 30/01/2025 20:18

@wizzywig I hope it is going well x

@NotALotToLose that will probably be because there's fewer people being prescribed at a BMI of between 27 and 30 as you will need to have evidence of a weight related health condition to qualify. So a much smaller target audience by definition. Plus, you don't have the challenge of being on a weight loss diet for 6, 9, 12 months or longer. So people who will only be taking it for 3 months or so will drop away quickly from the long running threads.

The doses of Mounjaro are not calculated by weight, so someone with a BMI of 50 will take 2.5mg to start with just as you with a BMI of 27 will. Side effects or efficacy of the medication don't correlate with starting BMI,

You can't say that the OP hasn't had that challenge already. I've been trying to get from BMI 28 to 25 for 15 years now.

SilenceInside · 31/01/2025 11:20

@SharpOpalNewt that's not the point I was making. What I meant, if you look at the following sentence, is that someone starting with a BMI of 27/28 isn't likely to be on a Mounjaro weight loss journey of 6 months plus. So there isn't as much opportunity to establish an online community as people reach their goals in a few weeks and move on. From an already smaller starting group.

But, this thread seems to have gathered a group of people in the OPs position which is great.

Tinydancer123 · 31/01/2025 14:24

Hi - all,

Welcome to newbies= this is a lovely little group. Well done on the losses ladies.

Week 1 -loss 7 pounds ( however I am not really excited as this half stone has gone on and off for sometime ! Will be most happy when I break the barrier of this.
Weighed before Jab 2 this morning and had gained 1 pound ( this must have been the prosecco and that the meds were wearing off )

2nd 2.5 mg this morning so we will see what the second week holds. No side effects yet .

x

Tinydancer123 · 31/01/2025 14:26

@happycolahappychildren I will be in the same situation in 3 weeks and have no idea. I will see how my side effets are this time. Someone else may be more helpful . Great loss well done !

Dunkou · 31/01/2025 20:28

@happycolahappychildren congrats on the loss so far! In your position I'd order the 5mg pen as everything is going well. You can always take a smaller dose from it e,g 3.75mg or even stick with the 2.5mg. But at least you'd have the choice of moving up next month if you find the 2.5mg isn't working so well any more.

Dunkou · 31/01/2025 20:29

@Tinydancer123 that's a great loss for week1. And sounds good so far on the side-effects front!

Tinydancer123 · 31/01/2025 20:39

@Dunkou in bed now feeling cold and I also have stomach cramps. Last time I had really quick supression, this time not as intense.

Sockmate123 · 31/01/2025 20:45

Hi all, Wk 1 lost 5 lbs, Wk 2, 2 lbs. Happy with that as i 'only' have 20 lbs to lose for GW but even with 7lb loss i am now in higher end of healthy BMI (not that I pay massive attention ti BMI).

Tummy is a bit upset, not constipated, not diarrhoea but sort of loose stools, sorry if TMI 🙈

So tired though and freezing all the time, I have heat on way more than usual!

HeavyHeidi · 31/01/2025 21:20

Can I join you as well? Took my 2nd dose last night. No serious side effects. Just cold, living in my Oodie. Starting BMI 27.3. Lost 5.5 pounds the first week. And it has not been even a challenge.

Ok well stay warm and hopefully all will be well in the morning. And peppermint tea if you haven't already.

Great loss!

I get those spates of being cold as well.

Stomach issues seems so variable for everyone. I've had no diarrhoea at all but constipation has been pretty bad, even on the tiny dose I'm on (and flaxseed, water, dried apricots etc).
