Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

@Dunkou thank you - I stayed on 2.5mg all the way through, as I had good suppression throughout. No real side effects, the odd bad bout of nausea but always after eating something either oily or spicy, so slightly self-inflicted!

Amazing! Good to know that you managed it all on 2.5mg, I think that will be my path.

Tinydancer123 · 27/01/2025 17:17

I thought I was past the worst of nausea but on the way home 🤢 I have had two rice cakes to try and fend it off. No idea why as foodwise I had soup and crabsticks ! Just found out that salmon is quite high in calories but that is tea with veg . @Nomorethanthree73 so lucky to not have any bad side effects . I am unsure how I will keep going if jab 2 is like jab 1.

@NotALotToLose glad you're escaping the side effects mainly!

I injected stomach first time, and moved to thighs after that as read it gave less side effects.

I'm next jabbing on Wednesday so fingers crossed I've built some tolerance to side effects by now as it will be 5th dose. I'm not drinking alcohol, no spicy food or grease, drink loads of water, have rehydration sachets. In theory it's all in place.

I do have naturally low blood pressure and wonder if that plays a part, as MJ can lower it even more.

Yup, I was going to suggest trying thigh but it sounds like you're doing everything very sensibly.

I've done this both times and had great suppression and minimal side effects. Would like to try tummy but too terrified it may be stronger!

Do you have rehydration sachets? I find they help the nausea a lot. And peppermint tea is surprisingly effective.

Tinydancer123 · 28/01/2025 09:45

@Dunkou no I do not I will get some, thank you. I have peppermint capuslues and will get some peppermint tea. Weird feel fab again this morning! Such a rollercoaster. I am considering ordering the 5 mg and then at least I can give it a go if not drop down till 2.5 and it will last longer ?

Tinydancer123 · 28/01/2025 09:46

@NotALotToLose I injected in my stomach. I would say it is def working well.

KiffyKiffyKiffy · 28/01/2025 09:48

Yes that's a good idea. In theory I should have done that but I was so horrified by the thought of 5mg I couldn't bring myself to order it. 😂

This is my plan too. Even if I just go up in 0.5 increments. I still want to experience some hunger and eat at regular meal times. Some of the 'what I ate today' posts are hilarious eg 2 haribo for lunch!

I think all of us on this thread are between 5 ft2 and 5ft5. Its so hard to be slim in Peri/
menopause when you're on the shorter side!

It is so hard in peri or post. I decided that I needed to combat this before it becomes worse. I feel like eating more today although Ihave only had 4 crab sticks and 2 ricecakes, but still today I feel like it, Do you know how long the injections last in the fridge? I want to order but not to early ?.

Dunkou · 28/01/2025 13:10

Just jabbed 1.7mg. I'm using the Shotsy app and according to that it will bring my blood level of MJ higher than I've done before (marginally) so fingers crossed.

They last until the expiry date on them. The 30 days starts from when you open it. The expiry on the one I ordered earlier in the month is August 2025.

Tinydancer123 · 28/01/2025 13:38

I agree @NotALotToLose I want to eat well and clean. I enjoy cooking and like food, my weight gain is from hormones- not from being someone who eats poorly. Exercise has always been part of my life, sadly being short anything over 8.12 - 9.3 I look huge ..... ...

Cantbesure · 28/01/2025 16:17

My BMI was just above 30 when I started but I'm shorter than all of you 😂 current BMI is 27 and I've been on MJ for 10 weeks. My loss seems to be slower than most of the others posting in my November thread. I've lost 15.5lbs. Also perimenopausal.

I'm aiming for another stone. And then see if I should lose more or if that's enough for me now I'm in my 50s.

No I only went upto 5mg. 2 on 2.5mg and 2 on 5mg.

That's good going, I'd be very happy with 1.5lbs a week. What dosage have you gone to?

I eat pretty well too generally, my downfalls are extra snacks (stress and comfort eating), an absolute raging hunger sometimes, which I think is down to some kind of sugar imbalance, which leads to big portions even though the food is reasonably healthy, and being too sedentary working from home.

I'm aiming for 8 stone 10, which I last was 6 years ago at 49, when I was already several years post-menopause, so I think it's achievable to get there again.

Cantbesure · 28/01/2025 21:34

Thanks @Dunkou I'm happy with how I'm plodding on. I'm back to a weight I was just dreaming of in mid November.

I did 6 weeks on 2.5, one on 3.75 and 3 weeks so far on 5. I've bought a 7.5 pen but going to keep taking 5mg from it unless my suppression stops. I've moved supplier with a code so it wasn't expensive to move up and it gives me flexibility to stay on 5 or move to 7.5 if I need to. I will dispose of the pen after 30 days from the first dose.

Dunkou · 28/01/2025 21:41

@Cantbesure yes, November was only a little while ago! Great that you've managed to come so far.

Cantbesure · 28/01/2025 21:52

Thanks @Dunkou I think sometimes I feel a bit lost in the volume of posts who have dropped a stone a month or more. But I'm delighted with my journey so far. I'm back to my pre-Covid weight and that's with Christmas and new year too.

Sorry to hear you are struggling to deal with the side effects. I've just had constipation and do feel grateful not to have felt ill.
