Starting Mounjaro with BMI 27/28

NotALotToLose · 26/01/2025 18:27

Keen to hear experiences of any Mounjaro users who had a lowish starting BMI. Obviously this only includes people who have other health concerns. I have high cholesterol so pharmacy were happy to prescribe to me with a BMI of 28.
I've lost 4lb in week one which I'm very happy with after many other unsuccessful attempts to get back to my previous size.
Any advice for those of us in the 'not a lot to lose' camp?

I eat pretty well too generally, my downfalls are extra snacks (stress and comfort eating), an absolute raging hunger sometimes, which I think is down to some kind of sugar imbalance, which leads to big portions even though the food is reasonably healthy, and being too sedentary working from home.

I'm aiming for 8 stone 10, which I last was 6 years ago at 49, when I was already several years post-menopause, so I think it's achievable to get there again.

We are aiming for the same :) I have not been 8.10 for sometime and would get stuck at 9.3 and from there it would pile on. Today on the scales there is an approx 4 pound loss - however I will add that this 4 pounds has been lost and put on quite a few times on previous diets. Despite teaching I spend a number of hours completing reports or marking so steps are hard ! How are you going today ?

@Dunkou thank you - I stayed on 2.5mg all the way through, as I had good suppression throughout. No real side effects, the odd bad bout of nausea but always after eating something either oily or spicy, so slightly self-inflicted!

That is fantastic to stay on 2.5mg. I feel already on day 5 that my supression was changing.

How high does cholesterol have to be to qualify for a prescription along with a BMI of 30. I have been told that I have a 38% chance of a stroke or heart attack i=within 10 years.

You can be prescribed privately with a BMI of 30 without having high cholesterol or other weight related health conditions.

My shot yesterday hasn't gone particularly well. It's my 5th shot, and was 1.6mg.

Took it at midday, to give me enough time to drink enough to rehydrate for night time, and eat enough to stop any low blood sugar drops at night. I was so hot last night, my sinuses were crackling, and my heart beating a bit fast. This happened on my first 2 shots - I thought then I was just getting a cold, but now I think it's the MJ as felt fine prior to the shot. I've now had a terrible headache all day, dry eyes and painful sinuses.

On the plus side I guess, suppression is strong. And nausea has been minimal (has been an issue on 3 of my other shots). It just seems super dehydrating for me even though I feel like I'm endlessly drinking, and have been taking electrolytes. I do have dry eyes and sinuses quite a lot so I suppose susceptible.

I think my next step is to leave a longer gap between shots, and still keep it at 1.6mg. The only shot I've managed without side effects is when I left a 9 day gap. I had a search through Reddit and someone there with similar 'flu' effects fixed it with a similar gap.

Could you have anxiety?

Dunkou · 29/01/2025 15:16

@Tinydancer123 even when I took the 2.5mg and was massively suppressed it wore off around Day 5. I think it's meant to as that's the drug's half-life length. I quite liked a couple of days of actually feeling some hunger.

Dunkou · 29/01/2025 15:19

@ThatCoralShark I guess I was a bit nervous about the shot as I keep getting side-effects. I don't think that would cause sinus issues and dry eyes, and feeling so hot though. May have contributed to the headache, it does feel a bit stress-like as I knew I'd have to work.

Certainly wasn't nervous when I started MJ, didn't really anticipate any issues given it's the starter month.

Actually dry eyes and sinus issues, plus feeling hot are key signs of anxiety.

Dunkou · 29/01/2025 15:28

@ThatCoralShark that's interesting, thanks, I didn't know that.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 29/01/2025 15:31

I've just started and my BMI is 27. I have diabetes and all other meds have failed so it's prescribed by my NHS GP.

I took it for 3 weeks and now am having a 2 week break as I'm travelling in the Caribbean without access to a fridge so was worried about keeping it under 30C. So I will restart next week at 2.5 again.

The first week I had horrendous side effects and really good suppression but in weeks 2 and 3 I only had a couple of days of suppression and only lost a small amount. I'm not bothered about weightloss but really want to get my blood sugar under control.

MJconfessions · 29/01/2025 15:34

So I started MJ needing to lose 16kg to reach a healthy BMI. I don’t know where that puts me on the scale of little-loads to lose, but I reached that in about 14 weeks.

That will happen whatever dose you're on. It wears out towards the end of the week and you should use those few days to practice eating well in preparation for maintenance.

Dunkou · 29/01/2025 15:52

@AnnaQuayInTheUk have a great holiday!

Thank you! On a different thread someone told me about a special gel.pack/case that you can activate using cold water which will.keep MJ or similar pens below 30C but sadly I didn't know about those until after I got here.

Tinydancer123 · 29/01/2025 16:55

@Dunkou oh no are you okay ?
Sorry to hear this.

I am worried for Friday.

Yes the being hugry or wanting food is nice . I feel very exhausted !

Thank you , not sure red wine is eating well but I actually fancy it ! Trying to stick to healthy !

@AnnaQuayInTheUk have a great break.

Dunkou · 29/01/2025 17:01

@Tinydancer123 I'm sure you'll be ok! I seem to just be unlucky.

I think I might actually have a cold, I've got earache, headache and am freezing, have got in bed. It's the third 'cold' I've had the day after a jab, but well, I guess it's winter so it's possible.

I don't think it's anxiety as suggested downthread. I do actually have anxiety quite often, but I've found the MJ has actually improved it (or to phrase it differently, I've not been anxious in last few weeks, could be coincidence).

No once your on uour optimal dose, for me ten, it stays all week, 24/7.

This never happened for me.
Like a PP, I liked that my appetite returned towards the end of the week as it allowed me to ‘practice’ making better choices.

Don’t rule out the fact that it’s a side effect, it’s perfectly possible that it is.

I think it is the jab - I read that some of us have an auto immune response . Having had this with the flu jab , when I took the 1st dose it was exactly the same - low level flu.

Yes I like it also as today I have stayed with the same meals and stuck to it. It tests me.

I’m good with it staying the same consistently, I still get hungry and eat small meals. I make better choices all day every day to be honest.
