DH has been on them for a couple of months and they've changed our lives for the better. He's an over eater/ mild binger and generally quite obsessed with food. Never managed to keep weight off.

Now he's happy, calm, doesn't think about food, eats like a 'normal person' and it's freed up so much space and joy in our lives.

Apparently in the future it'll be a pill you can either take that day or not, e.g. Most days but not Christmas day. Incredible!

Yes I know people get side effects and they don't work for everyone, etc. But I'm very impressed.
Apparently they also help alcoholics and other addicts as they work on the reward centre's of the brain. Amazing.

I think, these might work in the short term, but I know some of my friends who have been on them, have regained the weight they lost and more, people I know are actually worried about stopping them, even though they've achieved the desired weightloss, in case they regain. At this point I don't think enough is known about the effects of long term use, everyone sees it as a miracle drug, when something is too good to be true, it usually is.

You only regain the weight, if you over-eat. You don’t automatically gain weight because you stop taking them.

This is really interesting about some of the other benefits that are currently being studied:

I think they are life changing for people and I'm glad to hear of so many people doing well on them. They made me really unwell and hospitalised, but I appreciate that can't be a reason for other people to not be successful on them. just envious I think!

Scutterbug · 02/12/2024 22:40

Well only if you are rich. £100 a month isn’t feasible for many of us.

I pay about £150 a month for mine, DH is same. We quite often get discount codes that bring it down by £20 or so. Some people go really hard on referral codes that bring prices down. I don't really like providers who have that kind of ethos so avoid them, but if money is a big concern then you can get it down quite a lot if you advertise your referral code in plenty of places.

I've lost 40lbs and DH has lost 50lbs since starting in Sept. I've gone from a size 16-18 to a size 10-12. I still have 20lbs or so to go but I haven't been this weight since my early 20s! I've also had some other positive side effects, more energy, no aches and pains, it's calmed some of my ADHD stuff.

Are you on Mounjaro?

ExtraOnions · 02/12/2024 22:43

The amount I have saved in my food / snack / takeaway bill more than covers the cost. I was a binge over-eater…

bert3400 · 02/12/2024 22:44

I have been on MJ since May, lost 33lbs , I've gone very sloly up but only to 5mls....I absolutely love it and have had no side effects. My aches and pains from being 57 and menopausal have gone . I'm running around like I'm 20 😂. Clothes look fantastic and I've got a complete new vitality for life. Please keep me on this forever 😁

doodleschnoodle · 02/12/2024 22:44

@Sunflowermoonbeam Yes, Mounjaro. I've responded to it really well so I'm still on a low dose, which helps to keep the cost down too as the lower doses are cheaper. Some people aren't as lucky and need the higher doses to be effective.

snowdropsy · 02/12/2024 22:46

I think they are amazing.
But.
I worry that they will give the food industry the green light to keep mass producing unhealthy ultra processed crap, knowing people will continue to eat it.
We may not get fat but we can still be mega unhealthy and my worry is that while weight loss meds treat the symptoms, the causes will go unchanged.

izimbra · 02/12/2024 22:46

Newdevelopment · 02/12/2024 22:33

£130-£150 a month is quite a lot of money. I think for some people it will just be much much cheaper to eat better quality food, especially in the very long term. Pills will be seen as a quick fix, albeit a short term one, for some people. I wouldn’t want to be a Guinea pig though. Wonder how many years or decades they’ve been studied for?

The assumption that people are overweight because they're eating crap is quite frustrating.

You can eat a fantastically great diet, but overeat your TDEE by 200 calories a day and you'll be clinically overweight in a year.

I'm on Mounjaro - have lost a stone over the course of a month. My diet is not significantly different, I just eat less food than before because I'm not hungry all the time. I still cook from scratch, eat vegetables, whole grains, etc. Just less of it.

Triflelife · 02/12/2024 22:49

Buttermill · 02/12/2024 22:31

To all those who have started im curious where you "overweight" before? Has anyone tried it with a BMI in range but just to loose a few pounds or a stone say?

I am also interested in this! Is it possible to get them if your bmi is in range? I feel like if I could lose a few pounds I’d be able to keep it off. I gained during pregnancy and just never lost the final bit.

SereneCapybara · 02/12/2024 22:50

TeaInBed321 · 02/12/2024 21:32

I'm super jealous! I'm overweight and have struggled with my weight all my life. I am always always hungry. But I'm not heavy enough for mounjaro (I'm overweight but not obese). Thought about getting it illegally but I'm too scared of the side effects when not under medical supervision. I would love to just have one day where I didn't think about food constantly

It'd odd isn't it? I keep reading stories of people on weight loss injections who reach their target goal and start to taper off to maintain. They are way way slimmer than me by that point, below the midway BMI weight. But people who are above healthy BMI but not obese aren;t eligible.

SilenceInside · 02/12/2024 22:50

@AliceAbsolum glad to hear the effect it's had on your husband and the impact on your life too.

I have found Mounjaro to be an amazing treatment for me, and I have had the longest and most straightforward period of weight loss I have ever had. What is important to me is to consider how to maintain the weight loss when I'm at target weight, but it is exceptionally reassuring to now know that I can avoid returning to morbid obesity because of this medication.

I'll have been on this medication for the best part of a year once I reach my target weight, so I have plenty of time to plan for how to maintain the weight loss and to fully embed lifestyle changes. I may try to maintain without continuing to take it, or I may need to take a longer term dose. I'm comfortable with either approach.

Zeborah · 02/12/2024 22:50

It’s a diabetic drug, no one worries about the long term effect of taking that. I think the positives far outweigh the negatives

I'm sorry they made you unwell. Can you explain what happened? I don't know anybody personally who's been ill as a result of them. Who were you getting them from and what dose were you on? How much did you weigh at the start?

Stelmosfire1 · 02/12/2024 22:53

I’ve been on mounjaro since April and I’m 5 and a half stone down. My hypertension has resolved and I feel so much better. I feel so much freedom not being so consumed by food. BMI down from almost 40 to 27. I’m now at the stage of reducing the dose so the big challenge will start soon to maintain the healthier weight. It is expensive but I’ve made savings on food and don’t have take away or eat out as much so that helps. I’ve stayed with the same supplier but I know some people do switch to get it cheaper- I’ve had a few people use my referral code so they get money off their first dose and I get a credit so that’s helped too. My GP is supportive.

Oh God, me too! I've saved a fortune.

SilenceInside · 02/12/2024 22:53

@snowdropsy what do you mean? You can't continue to eat ultra processed crap when taking a GLP-1 injection, it will make you feel very unwell and give you side effects. I find I naturally tend towards fresh, vegetables, decent protein, home made food. I am utterly disinterested in sugary stuff, processed carbs, salty or fatty foods. That's part of how they work.

I think the opposite. If I were investing at the moment it certainly wouldn't be in fast food. When you take it you're just not capable of eating that kind of crap.

Bakedpotatoes · 02/12/2024 22:56

I think the problem with any quick fix doesn't particularly resolve the underlying reasons for being over weight - I know of a few people who are over eaters because of trauma, addiction to food etc. and they have undergone drastic quick measures and have all put the weight back on because they have not managed the underlying cause.

I think these medications are amazing if they help with the obesity crisis but this must be in conjunction with a holistic treatment and look at the underlying mental causes for being overweight.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/12/2024 22:57

I absolutely hate feeling nauseous so that puts me off.

I don’t eat until about 2pm most days and never get food noise so it is possible to train your body. My issue is that im
just greedy when I do eat.

SilenceInside · 02/12/2024 22:57

@Bakedpotatoes can you explain why the injections are a quick fix?

dogwal · 02/12/2024 22:57

My husband is on Mounjaro too, a cardiologist convinced him to take it, as he had slowly piled on the weight over the years, he was very reluctant though and worried about the side effects . He started on Wegovy and lost nothing, so was moved to Mounjaro and he has lost about 20 lbs since August. He has had very little side effects, some mild nausea and random heart burn at the beginning. His weight loss is slow and steady. He also says a lot of his golf aches and pains have disappeared.

This is so true. I'm eating more healthily than ever, have lost weight, drinking far less...
There may be risks but I've swapped that potential risk for the definite risks of long term obesity.

I started on them just over 2 weeks ago … from an eating perspective it’s great, no food noise, no binging, just small regular meals. Downside atm is nausea, and burps !. This should settle over time, but tbh I’m a Stone down, so can cope with the nausea.

Can I ask please? Are these burps “eggy” (if you get me?). I’ve been on them since September and had no major side effects. Extreme fatigue mainly. Very slow weight loss but fast during first few weeks. Now I get burps but they are very eggy? Like I’ve got a tummy bug?. Nice to read something so positive as well!!! It clearly works well for some people!!
