W6 D1. A loss of 2kg (4.5 pounds) in the last week which is a step up from previous weeks on 2.5mg!

I took my second 5mg dose yesterday and by the evening was feeling lots of suppression. I only managed half a plate of roasted veg for dinner. Didn't fancy any meat as I had had lots on the weekend. But maybe just veg for dinner was a bad idea as I had sulphur burps for the first time, all night! Barely got any sleep and I've had diarrhoea this morning.

Praying the symptoms don't last much longer. Anyway a total loss of 7.8kg (17 pounds) in 5 weeks which I'm over the moon with. Aiming for 10kg loss by Christmas. Hope everyone else on 5mg is surviving!

Morning all!

what’s on everyone’s menu today?

im on my last week of my first 2.5mg pen and can definitely tell that suppression is wearing off, but that has also made it sink in that there will one day be life after MJ so I really need to start using a bit of will power and lifestyle changes rather than relying on this alone.

my biggest downfall is planning - if I haven’t planned/got stuff in then I pick on rubbish which obviously is what led me here in the first place so I would be grateful for some inspiration from others!

Ooh. Planning is my speciality 😂

We had Dijon/lemon/police oil whole roast chicken last night with roasted new potatoes and rocket. I’ll be using the leftover chicken to make a red Thai chicken curry today ,(coconut cream, stock, tomatoes, sweet potato, red peppers) which I will have without rice (DH will have rice). I will then use the rest of the chicken to make a chestnut mushroom/chicken risotto tomorrow night (a little goes a long way) also served with rocket,

I’ll have a couple of boiled eggs at lunchtime along with 4 mejool dates for fibre. I might have a handful of roasted pistachios after dinner. Drinks are black coffee, Lemon&ginger tea and water. I have in the fridge a bowl of tropical fruit salad (1x pineapple, 1x mango, 1 x pink grapefruit , 1x passionfruit and 2 xorange)

Thursday I’ll make Rukmini Iyer’s baked Salmon/coconut/lime/chilli dish which I’ll serve with rocket. DH will have rice with that. I’d recommend all of her ‘Roasting tin’ series of books. Very easy, only one pan to wash up, lots of veg ideas.

Towards the end of the week I’ll make a caraway seed cake for DH. I might have a slice.

No booze until Saturday 💪

Recipes attached for the Chicken and Salmon. Red Thai chicken Curry is one I made up but you just need a red thai paste and throw everything in. You can swap chicken for salmon or sea bass (just add in for a few mins before serving once the veg is nearly ready)

Morning all! I'm back after 10 days abroad, during which time I was quite restricted in terms of exercise I could do but kept on jabbing & eating as healthily as I could.

Just started W4 today and I am 4.5kg down from where I started (that's nearly 10lbs to imperial fans). Very pleased! My clothes are looser and my feet have stopped aching, which had really started to alarm me.

I need a new pen for next week. I used Lloyds first time round, and will probably stick with them for this next pen up for simplicity - I'm such a noob, do I just order the next one and they send it out or will they want progress reports/screening info again?

Congrats! I had to enter in my new stats for MedExpress.

I bloody hope so. I’ve bobbed between 16.04 and 16.22 since 22nd November 😐 I only started MJ on 14th…

I’m not going to moan about it again but I genuinely don’t understand it unless I have grossly miscalculated my TDEE. I’m going to track everything I eat today even though it makes me mad to do so and take it from there.

Ralala · 03/12/2024 02:19

Oh wow. I jabbed on Saturday with my 5mg and I said earlier how I was feeling awful on it. Well tonight has been horrendous. I vomited up all my dinner which I really forced down and now I’m having diarrhoea again. I have a pain in the upper tummy which I where I normally get it if it’s trapped wind but of course being on Mounjaro with vomiting and diarrhoea I need to be alert to pancreatitis. The pain was constant but after some more vomit (how lovely) it’s calmed down slightly and is easing off . My poor husband hasn’t said to me I should stop but I had to say if I don’t drastically improve this week then it has to be the end of the road for me with this sadly

Hi,
sorry you are feeling like this. This happened to me last week (I’m still only on 2.5). I called doctor as I thought it was pancreatitis. The pain was agony all night. I felt better after I vomited. The doctor said it was acute acid reflux. I’m still not convinced! But he gave me omiprozole. I have had mild pains twice again, but nothing like last week. He said the fact that I felt better after vomiting means it was not pancreatitis. Maybe chat to gp? Hope you feel better.

I opened it and meant to sign up but totally got distracted 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mounjaropen · 03/12/2024 08:59

Here are the main points @JasonTindallsTan

The process should be straightforward: when we exercise we burn calories to create an energy deficit, prompting our bodies to use up stored fat to fuel bodily processes and other daily activities. If only it were that simple.
“Exercise on its own is not a very useful tool for weight loss,” Javier Gonzalez, professor of nutrition and metabolism at the University of Bath, says. “Dieting to consume fewer calories than you expend is a more effective way to shed pounds, but the healthiest approach is when the two — healthy eating and exercise — are used hand in hand.”
The reality for many people is that they don’t lose anywhere near as much weight as they expect when they start working out, and scientists are beginning to establish why.
Some researchers have suggested that the human body responds in unexpected ways when we increase our activity levels. In one study, Herman Pontzer, an evolutionary anthropologist and metabolism scientist, and his colleagues at Duke University in North Carolina, measured the energy expenditure of members of the Hadza tribe, hunter-gatherers from Tanzania. They found that although the Hadza were active for much of the day, the number of calories they burnt was similar to that of couch potatoes once data was adjusted for body size and other factors.

More recently, for a paper in the journal Science Advances, Pontzer looked at the calorie-burning of ultra-endurance runners who ran about 150 miles a week for 20 weeks in a transcontinental race. Surprisingly, even they burnt relatively the same number of calories as sedentary people. Pontzer’s theory is that this effect is down to what he calls “constrained total energy expenditure” — the more calories we burn doing regular exercise, the more internal adjustments our bodies make to other components of our metabolism, ensuring overall calorie burning is maintained within a narrow range.

“If you exercise today, you will burn more energy today,” Pontzer told the Washington Post, “but if you really change your lifestyle and start exercising frequently and that becomes your new normal, your body adjusts and you wind up not burning more calories overall.”
Gonzalez says there are many reasons why there may not be a linear increase in calorie burning when you start to exercise more — if you run for an hour and burn 500 calories, it’s not a given that your total energy expenditure for the day will be 500 calories higher than usual.
“It’s well documented that a lot of people tend to compensate for a morning run or gym class by being less active later in the day, bringing down their overall calorie burning for the day, despite adding a workout. And if someone substitutes another daily activity for an exercise class, it may impact their calorie output positively if they would otherwise have been lying on the sofa, but maybe negatively if they would have been digging the garden and did a yoga class instead.”
Of course, exercise, and resistance training in particular, is important for creating a leaner look when you lose weight. “It’s incredibly important for preserving muscle mass, which has aesthetic and metabolic benefits when weight is lost,” Gonzalez says. Here’s how exercise will (and won’t) help you to get into shape:

A review of 149 studies, published in the journal Obesity Reviews, that looked at how supervised aerobic, resistance or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise in combination or alone affected weight loss in overweight adults concluded that exercise alone does lead to weight loss, albeit only a modest amount. “The key is to create an energy deficit so that you burn more calories than you consume,” Gonzalez says. “If you start exercising and don’t change what you eat, you will do this to some extent, but the effect is more powerful if you reduce your calorie intake too.”

A common complaint is that exercise makes you hungry, so you end up eating more, compensating for any calories burnt during a workout. A lot depends on the type and amount of exercise you are doing. Counterintuitively, gentle jogging, swimming and yoga are more likely to leave you hungry than a tough HIIT session.
One recent study by researchers from the University of Virginia showed that HIIT sessions reduced levels of ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone, so that people felt less hungry afterwards. Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Kentucky reported overweight people who exercised for five hours in total every week displayed changes in levels of leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone, allowing them to better regulate their desire to eat. Those who worked out less showed no such hormonal changes.

The evidence suggests that frequent exercise is much better at preventing weight regain than it is at helping people to lose it in the first place,” Gonzalez says. Although Dr Mark Homer, an exercise physiologist at Buckinghamshire New University, adds that you need to be diligent and to gradually increase the intensity or the duration of activity for the weight to stay off. “Vary your exercise and keep at it are the rules,” he says.
Contestants on the American TV show The Biggest Loser were tracked for six years after losing weight and researchers reporting in the journal Obesity concluded that those who exercised at the gym for about 80 minutes most days regained fewer pounds than those who didn’t exercise.

“Frequent exercise reduces inflammation and stress levels and helps to counter some of the undesirable side-effects of excess body fat, such as raised cholesterol and blood-sugar levels, and there is absolutely no argument that it is not good for us.”
People who combine exercise with dieting have been shown to achieve double the metabolic health benefits, such improved blood-sugar control, as people who only dieted. And when it comes to longevity, exercise is the winner with a review from researchers at the University of Virginia showing that obese people reduce their risk of heart disease and early death far more effectively if they improve their fitness levels than if they just lose weight.

Studies have shown that resistance training will help to reduce harmful visceral fat, the type that settles around our organs and raises the risk of metabolic conditions, including type 2 diabetes.
A review paper in the journal Exercise Physiology confirmed that even though it may not induce faster weight loss than plenty of moderate aerobic activity, a short-duration HIIT workout also helps to blast belly fat.
“Exercise of any type will bring a host of metabolic benefits that help to prevent disease,” Homer says. “The important thing is to do it frequently for maximum benefit.”

Hunter-Gatherer Energetics and Human Obesity

Western lifestyles differ markedly from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and these differences in diet and activity level are often implicated in the global obesity pandemic. However, few physiological data for hunter-gatherer populations are av...

Thanks @Mounjaropen some of that definitely makes sense. It’s honestly just so frustrating when I can’t get below 16 stone without what feels like starving myself. MJ has been great at keeping me away from snacks and chocolate and eating between meals etc but I could still eat all of those things if I chose to. I’m less inclined to with MJ but I could eat past that feeling if I decided to. I’m still wanting to eat all of my meals but this morning in desperation I’ve cut out my breakfast (egg white on one slice of wholemeal normally) in the hope I start to see some movement. I feel hungry and like I’m denying myself which I am. I’d hoped MJ would take all of that away. I’m still thinking about food just as much as ever just in a different way to the compulsive way I used to before.

So whilst I'm pleased I've managed to lose 12lb in 3 weeks and it has been fairly consistent loss I'm wondering how it can be quite so high?

I do go to the gym 2-3 times a week and probably burn 550-600 calories in the hour I'm there but I'm consuming 1800-1900 calories a day so not mega low.

I've ordered the 5mg pen and I'm panicking now it's too high.

I've not had any side effects though and suppression hasn't been that strong so am I just overthinking things??

McZeba · 03/12/2024 10:14

Moved up to 5mg yesterday and have total suppression today. Luckily no side effects to far x

Mounjaropen · 03/12/2024 10:36

I injected 5 mg last night. Had a bit of insomnia but so far no nausea. I have got to the burps though! I felt as if my heart was racing a little yesterday afternoon so I took my blood pressure which was normal. I took it again this morning after I’ve had a coffee and it was quite high so I think I’m going to have to come off caffeinated coffee for awhile Interestingly, for the first time in ages I woke up with a rumbling tummy which is weird because I’ve had zero pains on 2.5 mg. I don’t have as much energy as I would do normally either but I think it’s probably because I’m waiting for side-effects that might not actually appear! 🤞

@fubard what app are you using to record everything? I’m using Noom but subscription ends next week. I was going to move back to mfp but open to any recommendations for food logging and weight tracking.

Last night - w3 D2 - I had a mini binge (chocolate mini twix and a packet of crisps). Definitely not as suppressed this week. Need to use some willpower too. That said, I’m a daily weigher and I’m down a pound. Must keep on keeping on.

Wow some amazing losses here! Well done!

I’m on W6 D2 (second week of 5mg). Was definitely hungry at the weekend. Suppression and side effects are still pretty minimal (at least they go hand in hand it seems).

I’ve lost 2lbs this week, taking me to a 10lb loss in total. Feeling a bit envious of those with bigger losses but as someone reminded me on another thread: it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Wouldn’t mind a few sprints to get me moving a bit faster though 😂

Onwards and Downwards (hopefully!).

@Mounjaropen Loving your food planning! I love those books too.

Hi all, thanks for the support. I have called in sick to work today and just managed to get out of bed. Thankfully husband sorted the little ones out. I haven’t been sick or had anymore diarrhoea since around 5am. Managed sips of water and a peppermint tea. Tired and abit of a sore head but probably from zero sleep and zero food being in me. I’m going to try some toast as I’m feeling a little better. Husband seems to think it may be a bug and it’s just a coincidence but who knows really! I’m in two minds whether I carry on. Next 5mg injection is on Saturday.

I weighed myself and I have my 1 stone loss in a month. I only have another 1 stone to lose as I was just on the 30 BMI. Need to weigh up what is best !
