I am in no way knocking anyone who is using these drugs, seriously if I could use them I would. However Im throwing this up here because these drugs have only been tested and deemed safe on a small study - those who's BMI is above 30.

Susan McGowan looks into the camera smiling - she has blonde hair in a short bob, black-rimmed glasses and a light grey t-shirt

Nurse's death linked to weight-loss drug Mounjaro approved on NHS

Susan McGowan from North Lanarkshire died two weeks after taking the drug tirzepatide, brand name Mounjaro.

Re the discount codes it’s gross. Soon you’ll be picking it up at the supermarket near the paracetamol. It hardly gives the message of a carefully regulated medicine you get from your own gp! buy one get one free! Free T-shirt when you buy a box of MJ!

You guys are deluded honestly. This isn’t the same as chemo. it’s actually offensive to suggest it is. Many many people are taking it that do not need it. Some people have admitted to lying to get it. It clearly is not regulated as well as it should be. And what the hell happens when you get to 8 stone and no longer qualify for the drug? Do you magically never binge on chocolate again? It’s a money trap!

re the anorexia comments too that argument doesn’t stack up. We don’t give anorexics a magic injection to cure them.

we educate them, we give them controlled food and mental health support. Some end up in rehab facilities and get even more support if needed.

Again, froggetz, why are you so het up about these discount codes? Why do you care how much they cost if you're not paying for them? I saw in another comment you actually complained that people were spending £££ on them - but you also don't want them to reduce the cost of any?

More importantly, what is your point about weight being put back on once a goal weight is achieved? By your own admission, you are not able to maintain a healthy weight even if you do manage to reach one, so don't you think you would be better off focusing on that and your own weight loss journey? My plan is to remain on a maintenance dose - I know that doesn't work for you but it's totally ok that our weight loss journeys will end differently. We will both hopefully achieve our goals and I'm fairly certain we will both feel the same immense pride at the achievement and the hard work we put into it, if we both get there.

And where, pray, is any of this for those of us who are fat and need help?

This type of ridiculous poster like @Finnulafishface fail to understand the scientific and medical evidence

They also haven't grasped that all of us taking WLI have capacity to consent to our own treatment
Part of that capacity is weighing up the risks versus the benefits

Why aren't they just as worried about, as a random example, gastric bleeds due to NSAIDS?

These meds have the ability to dramatically improve our nations health

Those who resent other people regaining their health are simply a nasty bunch

Happy jabbing, everyone!

And indeed the stoke and heart risk with NSAIDS.

I am now of NSAIDS entirely thanks to MJ taking away my arthritic inflammation a d giving me normal joints back.

Froggerz · 08/11/2024 21:15

@JurassicPark4Eva of course there is help for weightloss. Again, you are seeing and hearing only what you want to.

your gp can help. There is my local well-being hub which offer free weightloss classes and exercise.

there is also paid stuff if you want to go down that road.

And to that’s others re my own weightloss journey… I’ve said it can go up and down which I think is quite natural as you age and as you have kids etc. I think it’s interesting you view this as a failure and see the only other viable option as injectables, some of which have now been linked to a death.

I don't view it as a failure frogget, I view it as your personal choice, that isn't my business.
How you manage your weight loss journey and your maintenance of a healthy weight once you get to your goal is your business. My point is that you are advocating for it as the 'right' way to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight, but you yourself are not able to achieve that through its use.
It doesn't really matter to me personally if it works for you or not, so I'm interested why you are so opinionated in not only how I reach and maintain a healthy weight but also how much I pay for it?

Why do you care so much?

You are annoyed people are spending lots, you are annoyed there are discount codes

If doctors and scientists in this field see obesity as a long term condition that needs treatment, why does that bother you ( as this is clearly not a field you know much about)

Are you equally annoyed when a diabetic gets their condition controlled with pharmacotherapy but takes it long term to maintain that? Are you het up and angry that people with hypertension may need their medication to control their blood pressure long term? What about epilepsy, is it ok for people with this condition to have long term medication?

You are extremely ignorant about the entire matter.

All of us on WLI can make our own decisions regarding risk/benefit and want treatment. Much like almost all other medical conditions that are treated.

No one is forcing you to have them so it's perplexing why you would have such strong ( yet ill-informed) opinions on OTHER PEOPLE'S health

OnInstagramAsMounjaroJourneyUK · 08/11/2024 21:30

There are risks with everything we do, from drinking alcohol to using artificial sweetness or sugar. There is a risk when we walk around our house that we can trip over and bang our heads and die.

There is a risk of death from taking commonly used drugs I.e Morphine, Diazepam and even Paracetemol.

But the main risk if you are obese is Diabetes.

Diabetes has a mortality rate of over 1% which is higher than the mild cases of Pancreatitis.

Mild acute pancreatitis: The mortality rate is less than 1% and about 75–80% of cases of acute pancreatitis are mild.

Mounjaro was first used in the UK was in February, from the many people taking Mounjaro since then this fatality becomes a tiny chance percentage.

Don't get me wrong, I had a wobble too. But looking at the bigger picture, this very tragic death (who I'm sure her family feel was not worth it) is very rare. There is also a possibility this lady was already on her way to Pancreatitis and the Mounjaro use is a very sad coincidence.

What you won't read on these articles is that obesity is a risk factor for pancreatitis and can increase the severity of the condition -
Acute pancreatitis
A BMI above 25 increases the risk of severe acute pancreatitis, and a BMI above 30 increases the risk of mortality. Obese patients are also more likely to develop complications, such as systemic complications, local complications, and pancreatic necrosis.

Froggerz · 08/11/2024 21:36

@Searchingforthelight because this issue has snowballed and it affects every one of us. Look at mumsnet… day after day, post after post of threads about injections. Every other person on it or trying to get it. I had someone offer me a discount code the other day if I wanted some. It’s like giving out your staff discount at the shop you work in 🤣

I have young daughters and this narrative around weightloss is quite dangerous. Take a pill to make it easier. I actually think it’s a bit of a step backwards and nobody can deny that it’s become very fashionable to be thin these days. I know I keep banging on about celebs but it’s clear that several of them have lost weight quickly via drugs and well… our young people are watching.

it’s an important issue for all of us. Particularly women. And particularly young girls.

OnInstagramAsMounjaroJourneyUK · 08/11/2024 21:38

Severe Pancreatitis, which, as above can be caused by obesity, has a higher mortality rate:

Moderate or severe pancreatitis: The mortality rate is 13–35%.

About 75–80% of cases of acute pancreatitis are mild.

Froggerz · 08/11/2024 21:39

So in answer to your question I don’t give a shit whether Julie who is morbidly obese was prescribed it by her gp to help control her diabetes but this is much bigger than anyone predicted. Like I say, everyone’s on the stuff.

at least we will have some good long term data coming I guess.

But on the contrary, I'm so grateful to see this in my lifetime. I had an older frined who died and was always trying to lose weight and carried a lot of her self worth by her weight (she wasn't particularly large either). I wish she could have understood that it wasn't her fault that she struggled with her weight.

I am hopefully that my daughter won't have to battle with her weight if she struggles in the future. Assuming and hoping no long term side effects emerge.

Smallsalt · 08/11/2024 21:46

Froggerz · 08/11/2024 17:58

I agree about the unhealthy habits taking injectables makes you have. Agree that I’ve read several things about having so little appetite or feeling so sick you can’t eat. Look at Sharon osbourne. She says it’s messed her metabolism and she Can’t put weight on now. Loads of celebs look awful on it too. Scott disick looks bloody awful.

it’s not normal.

I reckon worst case we will discover these drugs are not what we think they are in 10-20 years, maybe causing more serious issues, like death and goodness knows what else. Maybe mental health issues or bone issues from lack of nutrition.

best case, we are opening ourselves up to more disordered eating, actual eating disorders, and a bunch of young people that can’t be arsed to educate themselves about diet/exercise because there’s a pill for that.

apart from some medication and some illnesses, being overweight is mostly a lifestyle choice.

And actually I think we still have an issue re education. People say “oh but I ate no calories and gained a pound”… lying to themselves…. It’s basic maths. I think people underestimate what they eat and forget to count things like drinks. They say things like “I just had a bowl of special k this morning” but actually that large bowl was a few hundred cals. 30g of cereal is teeny when you weigh it. I actually need to eat around 1200 cals a day to see the scale move. I’m perimenopausal and short.

Which other drugs do you have these concerns about given your profound pharmacological knowledge? You must have done LOTS of research into lots of drugs.
Do share your expertise as to which other drugs we should avoid?

Oh wait, you have no clue?

You just like wittering about Mounjaro and have no more idea about that than you have a out the risks of any other drug .
Glad we sorted that out.

I feel this way too.

Delighted obesity can be treated, eradicated, that my children and young people won't spend years of their life being obese and suffering all the consequences of that.

Really delighted!

TheGoingGetsEasyAfterItGetsTough · 08/11/2024 21:59

Look at mumsnet… day after day, post after post of threads about injections.

This doesn't make sense unless it's intended to mislead. Do you mean on the board that's specifically for WLI - what else is supposed to be posted here? Do you frequent this board not knowing where you are or do you mean random threads sometimes from the doom-mongers who neither understand how anything works nor what it really is and just want to shitpost about WLI on aibu?

Either way, it still doesn't make sense as the former is posted where it should be and the latter isn't as often as 'day after day', even if it was, it isn't from those who use WLI. I'll suggest you hide any WLI threads you see and/or have some control about coming to this board when you don't like what you read. Better still, hide this board completely - that should help.

because this issue has snowballed and it affects every one of us...Every other person on it or trying to get it.

Of course, the solution to obesity has snowballed and most people who're obese would like to be on it. It affects them. What else do you expect? They aren't responsible for every other person. Celebs buy all sorts of drugs that they shouldn't be using from their celeb contacts and high-priced personal doctors, etc. They're irrelevant to sourcing of anything from a general public perspective.

I had someone offer me a discount code the other day if I wanted some.

Another misleading comment. Why would someone offer you a discount code unless you were asking about buying WLI or they were being sarcastic. I'm sure you're not suggesting people are going about peddling discount codes to any random poster for no reason at all.

Deliverude · 08/11/2024 22:09

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/11/2024 04:19

It's a personal decision.

Sort of.

I'm of the opinion that healthcare shouldn't be a business. No advertising, no insta-people, no discount codes. I think risk should be discussed with an actual HCP whose job is your health, and public health, not profit.

It makes me very uncomfortable to see the discounts and online pharmacies. I've had very important discussions with HCPs about whether or not to take various medications, for various medical issues, all of which are a balance with me and the HCP talking about risk, side effects, benefits, LT and SH gain and loss.

What's happening right now is not that.

I’d extend this to the aggressive marketing from pharmaceutical companies towards HCPs.

Drs are still very much susceptible to marketing ploys and incentives, something that, IMO, shouldn’t be allowed when people’s health is on the line.

I just don't see it like this.

On the contrary, I am delighted that obesity will not be an issue and a life long struggle, a source of misery and much ill-health, for the young of today

I'm delighted my children will not have to deal with this issue, and that society generally will be healthier

It's great news for the NHS too, but mostly I see it as a source of joy for every individual who has battled with obesity.

I look forward to the roll out on NHS in due course

If you dont like the drugs. Dont take them.
It's really very simple.

Froggerz · 08/11/2024 22:35

a difference of opinion is not “droning on” and last time I checked this was a public forum! Surely you can understand that simple little fact @Smallsalt Has it changed? Can you only post here if you are into the drugs?

LunaTheCat · 08/11/2024 22:53

I am a GP .. in New Zealand.
it worries me when private clinics offer only one treatment.. we have seen that here after medicinal cannabis became available and also with weight loss treatments.
If a clinic is offering only one drug (or drugs from a certain group) then that is dangerous medicine .. good medicine involves discussion about several options and the risks and benefits of all.

Smallsalt · 08/11/2024 22:59

Why do you care ? You don't take it. Why do you care who does? You actually sound unhinged. Yes it's a public forum. But you are definitely droning and very badly informed

What other drugs do you have concerns about? How do you feel about the 3000 NSAID deaths?
I mean a person with so so many opinions must surely have concerns about all the much more dangerous drugs that people take daily. And you will naturally have researched them to go along with your "opinions".

How do you feel about the much more dangerous heavily prescribed cancer causing, liver and kidney destroying, birth defect inducing methotrexate? Do you post countless opinions about that? Or other drugs?

Because it would be a bit irrational to fixate on just one drug, which you don't take and know nothing about.

I know I keep banging on about celebs but it’s clear that several of them have lost weight quickly via drugs and well… our young people are watching.

it’s an important issue for all of us. Particularly women. And particularly young girls.

I hate to tell you this, ‘just take this pill and be slim’ has been a thing forever.

Usually, it’s not an actually researched medication. Usually it’s a supplement. A fat burner. An extreme diet. Far more dangerous things.

Lots of celebs loose weight with all sorts of drugs and fat burners and extreme diets. And have done forever. The media have reported on forever.

If you opened up social media 2 years ago people talking about slimming world, Atkinson, Carnivore diet, raw fruit diet, parasite cleanses, 7 day fasts, 7 day juices diets. There’s pro ana areas of all social media. There’s adverts for fat burners using celebrities (sometimes falsely, sometimes legitimately) to advertise supplements. Post after post about you just need this or that and it’s the secret to good health. You have celebrities claiming their lip product gave them the full lips they have, when it’s filler to influence young women into parting with their money. Celebs with BBLs which influences young women. Women with BBLs selling gym routines so you can look like them and women killing themselves in the gym with no hope of achieving what they are aiming for because it was always surgery. Orthorexia being touted as the fix for anorexia. People giving codes out to buy xyz which ‘will melt your belly fat’. People offering BBLs in beauty salons. Unregulated people injecting fillers and Botox. Selling dodgy medication, not just fake Mounjaro. Beauty salons have had fat burners, tanning pills, tablets, Allurion type tablets available for years.

How many people do you think have ended up with food issues, body issues, health issues, mental health issues or died because of all of the above. How much research do you think goes into a lot of these supplements?

Every other person isn’t on this. If you think you didn’t need to be concerned about the influence on your daughters before weight loss injections you are deluded. This isn’t something new that happened with WLI.

This is a prescription medication. It’s a serious prescription medication. Out of all the shit your daughters could see on social media that will damage them, why is your concern a prescription medication that is actually helping people whose daily lives are really negatively impacted by their weight.

I have certain feelings about discount codes. Not about discount codes themselves but about how some people (very few) try and get people using them through less than honest ways. But that is a very small amount of people and women are far more likely to just buy something else that’s being sold. But your fear your daughters are now more at risk than before is unfounded. There’s far more harmful things that they could easily see and get hold than a prescription medication.

There’s finally an actual medication that can help people and that’s a huge concern to you?

I suspect, if this is one of your concerns, you know that as you will be versed on it. But to say you are worried about yours daughters and women, sounds more palatable.

Mrsredlipstick · 09/11/2024 04:34

@Froggerz i was the poster who mentioned chemotherapy. You took that word out of context. The drug carries risks and causes weight gain. Have you had it? Because I have and have the hair loss to prove it. One in three of us may need chemo but we're not advised to use time banded GP1 drugs to combat the side effects? You are being very bigoted.
I could not walk in April this year, wipe my bottom or get downstairs. I took a drug that could give me heart failure. However as an intelligent adult I felt it was the only choice. Many obese people feel they've had no choice for years. People have huge surgeries and go abroad to have barriatric proceedures. Many die. Even rich people do like Lisa Presley. Surely these are worth trying first?
Personally I would like to see weightloss drugs available in person in chemists. It would stop the skinnies using these injections to lose 7 pounds. Luckily MN takes these posts down.
If you came on this thread and said you're concerned people may die and is it better to use xyz method you may have got a friendly dialogue. When the pill was launched in the sixties many were warned of blood clots. People forget that but it's still a side effect.
If genuine users of WLD use a reputable pharmacy you have to go through many hoops. Many now use videos not static photos to cross reference. It took two weeks for me to be approved.
The celebs you mention have lied to get these drugs. Lottie Moss ended up in hospital. I hope your daughters are brighter than that.

Mrsredlipstick · 09/11/2024 04:49

And just to add, Kate Moss is famous for saying 'nothing tastes as good as thin does'.
That's the sort of crap our daughters get fed.

Bluenose1966 · 09/11/2024 06:41

So sad for that poor lady and her family.

If successive Governments hadn't let the food industry self regulate with their Ultra Processed Food designed to make us want more then the obesity crisis may not be as it is, and its getting worse. A lot of the big tobacco corporations bought food companies when smoking legislation came in so their concern is definitely not our health. Unfortunately the only way to control compulsive eating for many can be the weight loss injections.
It's mad in a way that it's come to this but we are where we are.
Each to their own, I would never get botox etc but don't make judgement on this who do.
Was listening to a webinar by a Cambridge professor who said that although exercise is great for you there is not one study that demonstrates it keeps weight off.
Our bodies are more complex than we think.
There are also over 200 conditions related to obesity so weight loss can be beneficial in so many ways. This is a tool for those who can't lose weight by conventional methods.
In USA KrispyKreme doughnut sales down so its beginning to work, the food industry is going to do everything it can to fight back.
