I started taking MJ at the beginning of April. I’ve been a slow loser, and have lost 2 stone in the time I’ve been on MJ.

My starting weight was 84kg and I am now 71.5, I am 5’7.

I took my last injection last Sunday, so just over a week ago and it was around 6mg (counting clicks on a 12.5mg pen)

I have definitely noticed hunger today. However I am able to deal with that at the moment by reminding myself I had lunch an hour ago etc so I do not need to eat.

I think everyone on these meds worries what may happen when you stop. It’s like any diet, if there isn’t a lifestyle change, you will regain all the weight.

I thought I’d start a thread for some real life experience of what will happen - I’m aware I’ll still have MJ in my system for the next couple of weeks, but will be a good experiment to see if the hunger becomes unbearable or manageable with my new found knowledge of better food groups to eat!

Having been on MJ for 6 months I’m fairly sure I am able to make better choices now - famous last words 😂

I have felt tired like i had low blood sugars day 1-3 and have had to be careful not to schedule major things at work these days and make sure I eat enough to avoid low sugars and queasiness.
and I have STILL lost weight on 5mg
no idea how some people tolerate higher doses…??!

I'm 10 and no real suppression really

Im one of the rare breeds it's seems

Very envious of those on 2.5/5 and lose tons and are little due to suppression

Same! I’ve even gone all the way up to max dose but have come down to 10mg as I am getting smaller and I think the medication is having more of an effect.

I managed to gain .4 lbs on 2.5mg!

Femme2804 · 29/10/2024 00:15

I’m just starting last month and already down 1 stone. Prior to mj i’m a weightlifter. So i have active lifestyle, but then i have thyroid problems who makes me gain so easily despite all the effort i did to keep my weight. I never like diets. But now i realise if you want to maintain your weight you have to be suffer a bit.

i went to mcdonalds yesterday with my ‘slim friend’ and she always have mcdonalds salad with grilled chicken, meanwhile i used to have burger meals. With MJ i started to eat like her and i notice other people who is skinny also eat little. They dont eat full meal in mcdonalds. A lady sat next to me eat a cheese burger but only eat 1 bun. So she throw the top bun. The only people who ate full meal in there usually teenager or overweight people. Seriously i’m shocked. How i never seen this before. If you go to Mcdonalds go and observe how slim people eat vs other people eat. Yesterday like a hit in the face for me.

So my journey is still long, need to lose 3 more stone and i’m really dont know how to end my journey. Really want to do maintenance but its soo expensive i dont think i can do maintenance every month.

National Weight Loss Registry

Hello everyone! I’ve been on MJ since 15 September. Weight loss has been slow but it’s definitely coming off. And yes wine intake has decreased heaps!

There is a US site with this registry on it. -it started out as a university research programme to try and figure out how people kept the weight off once they’d lost it. The registry has about 10,000 people ( majority women)on it who have lost weight and kept it off.

The takeaway from those shared experiences are summarised in 4 points:

78% of them are breakfast
they weighed themselves weekly
they exercised several times a week -most walked an hour a day
cant remember the last one but I think it was keeping portion size down?

Anyway in my younger years I managed to keep to the same weight for over ten years (not now hence MJ!!) and I believe the mindset and above should help keep it off!

That’s interesting, thank you for that.
I was 9 stone 4 for my entire adult life (bar pregnancy) until I got to 35, so I’m hoping that will stand me in good stead for maintaining my new weight too.

That’s really interesting, thanks so much for this.

I definitely think breakfast is the key - I’m very hungry now but will make the right choice in weetabix or porridge

Much of this will be down to willpower - we all have it given that we get up and go to work when we don’t want to/make yourself do things you don’t want like study/housework/paying bills.

The key will be directing myself to the right choices

Breakfast makes me hungrier!

Just ordered what I think will be my last pen. Currently on 5mg and I've got 3 doses (including the bonus dose) left in this pen. Have ordered another 5mg pen but will probably drop down to 2.5mg. Depends on the weight loss in the next week or two I think as I have lots of work travel and dinners out (but hoping MJ stops me from over-indulging!)

20bloodypounds · 29/10/2024 12:27

@NearingendofMJ Thanks for starting this thread, it's such an important question. Hopefully over time there will be a bank of useful advice building up with people sharing their successful strategies for maintaining, and their challenges - so we can be prepared with what to look out for, and when our time comes (hopefully early 2025 for me) we can all have the best success at living at our healthier weights - whether or not that includes an MJ maintenance plan.

I've seen a few posts on the longer running threads. One poster had their first non-MJ period after stopping and noticed how strong their food cravings were and how tempted they were by all the bad food choices. Sharing things like that can help us prepare (not that periods apply to me any more).

I saw other posters who had learnt during their MJ journey what a 800 calorie day might look like (ala Michael Mosley's fast 800). That learning meant they could have 1 or 2 days per week on 800 cals, the rest of the time more relaxed.

I think it is also helpful to share emotional insights. I have to learn that in my mid 60s trying on clothes in a well lit changing room is always going to be a dismal experience - my body is never going to look like it did when I was in my 30s. I just need to put the clothes on without looking, or judging, and be pleased at the end result.

Exactly that - hunger is a normal thing to feel and I think it’s unrealistic to medicate that away for a long period of time. Learning coping mechanisms is what will help longer term and the self confidence I will feel if I manage to drop the extra 3 kg myself will be amazing.

I am hungry today but can reason that I’ve eaten a healthy breakfast and snacked on almonds so I don’t need that bag of crisps.

I guess it’s like other diets, it you did Weightwatchers for 6 months then went back to your old habits, you would regain the weight.

For me it’s telling myself I’m not depriving myself of anything. I don’t need snacks , just 3 meals a day.

There will be days that I eat more and have meals out, but overall I just need to be more responsible and think about what I need, not what I want

I am finding that so far, I’m able to ‘sit with’ my hunger. I had breakfast at 7.30am and I’m hungry now but so what? It’s just a feeling, and it’s nearly my lunchtime, so the feeling will be gone soon. Feeling hungry isn’t the end of the world!

NearingendofMJ · 29/10/2024 12:37

just to clarify - these are my own views and I’m absolutely not suggesting anyone is wrong for wanting to stay on MJ long term, I just think I’d like to manage my hunger/cravings myself and find a long term coping mechanism- but totally understand some want to stay on it for life

That’s a great way of looking at it. Hunger is just a feeling, I look at it like my brain is doing the right thing and taking control over my impulsive nature to eat crap - whixh is how I got like this in the first place!

I'm also learning the difference between hunger and having a bored mouth. Even with MJ supression I can find myself opening the fridge and looking for something... On MJ I just close the fridge door whereas previously the cheese might have looked tempting, or a slice of toast and peanut butter - even though I had eaten and was not hungry.

I’m still on my journey (5 weeks in) and reckon I will have a total of 4-6 months on mounjaro. But my weight gain is mainly down to a bored mouth! Takeaways, packets of biscuits etc.

Learning new habits now for when I come off mounjaro. Bored… have a herbal drink, pop on some podcasts and go for a walk, do some reading, finish some decorating or DIY…

Boredom is my downfall and I shall defeat it!

Exactly that. I think on the whole people have learned to fear hunger. It's okay to feel hungry, it's normal to be tempted. It's also normal and okay to give into temptation...as part of a balanced diet.

I think it's far healthier to know this and learn how to deal with it than just rely on medication to the do the whole job forever. It's not sustainable. I am 45, I can't stay on MJ for 30+ years, that's bonkers.

I think it pretty clear the NHS won’t prescribe this long term for maintenance to anything other than the life threatening obese, even then I’m not sure.

pretty much like a gastric sleeve, they wouldn’t offer that to most people.

If you stayed on MJ for 30 more years it would cost you around 75k….

I'm personally thinking of staying on it, maybe one month on / one month off 9if allowed) not just for weight reasons but other things such as inflammation and prevention of alzheimers. I don't think it's 'crazy' we are all different, and have different perspectives. For me it is an investment in my future health.

I have seen a lot of e.g. osteoarthritis related to weight, dementia, heart disease in older relatives and want to try and avoid that if possible

I totally respect others might want to go without it though. I'm also open to seeing how it goes and maybe if I can manage without it that could be an option.

ItsAlrightDarling · 29/10/2024 14:12

I entirely respect that others may want to stay on it long term, it’s just not for me.

I said bonkers relating to my own situation, because for me, I do think it would be bonkers for me to stay on it for 30 years, but that's my own perspective.

I also don't think we'll be able to stay on it long term as @NearingendofMJ private prescriptions or not, I've already read a lot this week about how they want to tighten this up so I think while we get to enjoy it now and keep on it at a lower BMI from some providers, I think that will change in the near future.

I can't quote a quote in the app

But @Sunkisst so nice to meet you !!!

Everyone else seems to have great suppression and losing 3 lbs a week on low doses

I have little suppression and usually lose a lb

No symptoms or issues and on 10

Gone up every month as advised
