Jimmyneutronsforehead · 28/09/2024 09:10

It's thread 22 time! As usual please fill up the previous thread before we make a start on this one.

Huge congratulations to every one who has made losses, and well done to those who have graduated the mounjaro club! We would love you to come back and share your tips for maintenance so we can all continue to learn and grow from each other.

Pointers for newbies:
Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30. If you have additional health conditions you can get the medication with a BMI 27. (Prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems)
Mumsnet does not allow promo codes. Please do not post any. If you want one, ask and someone will PM you a code or there are now threads on the promo page that have codes for Mounjaro link below:

This one's the most recent I will also post the image.

Just to copy from the previous thread as it's highly useful information:

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cooling-resistant-starch#TOC_TITLE_HDR_6

MabelSpan:
For those who love their carbs, I grow my own veg, including lots of potatoes so eat them most days. You can dramatically increase the amount of resistant starch, a type of fibre, in your potatoes, rice and pasta and bread simply by cooking then cooling, ideally overnight or freezing in the case of bread and then reheating or toasting in the case of bread.

Please remember to do this safely if this is something you would like to do.

In light of being in close proximity to someone who has had complications from Mounjaro, I just want to say for any newbies: We are a wonderful community of Mounjaro users with a wealth of knowledge between us, but we're not a medical service. We are all people who have acknowledged the risk to benefit ratio, and are following our clinicians advice. If you do have any serious side effects listed on the information sheet that comes with your medication, please seek medical advice.

There are no questions too silly, no loss too small to celebrate, no hurdle not worth the challenge and huge congratulations to everyone who has made it this far in their journey and once again, welcome to thread 22.

Wow wow wow that is amazing😍

SilenceInside · 11/10/2024 15:53

@Slimstar13 that's really inspiring, thank you for posting. My starting weight was almost the same as yours, but I'm on week 15 at the moment so a little way behind you. You've done amazingly!

QueenOfHiraeth · 11/10/2024 16:04

@Slimstar13 Amazingly well done! Your loss is stunning!
Have you planned a maintenance strategy yet?

MabelSpan · 11/10/2024 16:18

@Slimstar13 Wow! You have done so very well, congratulations! I have 7 stone to go to get to my ideal lowest weight, though that might go up if I end up wearing too much loose skin😊

FarriersGirl · 11/10/2024 16:26

I don't often post about my weight but today is a big day. I started in early May.
SW 12st 12lbs
CW and GW 9st 12lbs
BMI today is 24.8 and this is the lowest I have been since my late 20's well over 30 years ago. 😃

Any more news on your DH @Jimmyneutronsforehead ? Hope he is improving and/or getting some answers

Yes, some good news.

He's home, pancreatitis markers we're on the up again but they weren't overly concerned but the problem wasn't his pancreas this time it was kidney stones.

They have said that his pancreatitis is likely to reoccur, and the first

They'd done a scan, but the urologist was in a different hospital doing a clinic so not there to review the findings.

They'd just come to give news of their findings when DP had gone to the bathroom and passed some really jagged stones so they had come to deliver what was at that point in time the obvious.

He's feeling significantly better now which is a huge relief but wonder what next week will bring

@Slimstar13 Thank you for sharing so much. I completely agree with everything you say. I hope I can follow in your footsteps, funnily enough, when I last lost a good amount of weight (5 stone) the only place I had loose skin was a bit on my inner thighs too, I would be delighted to repeat that with my 7 stone!
Congratulations on all you have achieved😊

KrankyKumquat · 11/10/2024 19:57

@Slimstar13
It's really strange you should mention loose skin on the inner thigh - that's the only place I have it too and notice it in the morning but at bedtime, it's virtually gone. I'm thinking it's worse in the morning due to dehydration perhaps. Not a big deal but gives me some hope it can, therefore, improve in time as it must be vaguely elasticky.

SilkFloss · 11/10/2024 20:11

May I ask a question?
I'm considering starting Mounjaro and am debating all the pros and cons.
Why is the BMI threshold set at 30? If you begin taking the jabs with a BMI of, say, 40 and then you reduce weight beyond the 30 mark, how come it's OK to carry on below that but not for a new starter?
Why is it considered not a good idea for a slim person to take them?

SilenceInside · 11/10/2024 20:28

@SilkFloss none of us here are medical experts or doctors. The decision was taken by the MHRA to approve Mounjaro for those with a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 27 with weight related health problems such as pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems.

www.gov.uk/government/news/mhra-authorises-diabetes-drug-mounjaro-tirzepatide-for-weight-management-and-weight-loss

That cut off point would have been based on the research done on effectiveness compared to risk of side effects. If your BMI is less than 30 and you have no weight related health issues, then the risk of side effects is not considered appropriate. If you start the treatment at a BMi higher than 30 then of course you can continue till your BMI is in the healthy range otherwise no one would ever actually reach a non-obese weight!

I don’t think any of us can answer that really, because we’re not the experts. There has to be a cut off for prescribing somewhere, and the assumption is that at a BMI of 30+ the benefits outweigh the risks.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 11/10/2024 22:14

I can't believe it. With all the stress and the convenience foods and snacks and frankly rubbish I've been eating I've avoided the scales. Felt a lot of shame lately for my eating habits.

After reading all of these success stories I weighed myself before tea today and I am in the 100kg club! 100.95kg, but this is obviously after a day of eating and drinking too.

So apparently the key to breaking the stall was a Greggs glazed donut, Mexican chicken pizza slice, pasta, pancakes and stew, half a punnet of strawberries, half a punnet of grapes and an undisclosed amount of bread. Who knew?

Just goes to show the weight shifts when you're not looking.

I'd love to be 90kg by Christmas but I'd be happy with 95kg and every one staying alive and no more hospital trips by Christmas to be honest.

“Undisclosed amount of bread”. Love it 👏

I appreciate that no one here made the rules but I was just wondering how come it's OK to take it at 30+ but not at 29. But after a few months, it is presumable still OK to take it, even if you're down into the 20s. 🤷‍♀️

SilenceInside · 11/10/2024 23:36

@SilkFloss yes, because the benefits for people who are obese is worth the risk, and treatment can continue until they're at a health weight. It's not some big mystery. There has to be a cut off at some point, and a BMI of 30 was the decision point. If you're already not obese then you don't need to take the risk of using a weight loss injection.

People whose blood pressure is just at the top end of the normal category don't get to take blood pressure medication, because their BP is not high. And so on.

I think you’re making it more complex than it actually is.

To be eligible for obesity weight loss medication, you need to be obese. The medication stops you from being obese. Therefore patients take it until they are no longer obese. They base this on BMI.

It’s not rocket science - if you’re not eligible to start the treatment, you won’t be eligible to finish the treatment. It doesn’t mean someone with lower BMI will spontaneously combust if they took it, but they’re not the intended patients and people of that size haven’t been in clinical trials etc so no one can say with certainty what would happen.

QueenOfHiraeth · 12/10/2024 08:21

@SilkFloss I think the cut off may also be because the medication is intended for longer term use. The clinical trials for weight loss ran for 72 weeks of use, alongside lifestyle changes (building healthy eating, exercise and sleep habits). Allowing a lower start weight would increase the use in those without much to lose and encourage intermittent use just to lose a few pounds here and there, at which point the risks may outweigh the benefits.

Remember too that a drug distributes through the whole body and a larger body, in effect, gets a more diluted dose than a smaller one. By the time the bigger body has shrunk to the smaller size it is used to metabolising the medication so may be safer and less vulnerable to side effects.
Ultimately the answer is as simple as "because it hasn't been tested for lower starting BMI" but the reasons for sticking to that for now that are sound

I don’t think any of us can give you the answer to that question, you’d have to speak to the manufacturers/licensers

WitchyBits · 12/10/2024 10:38

Very happy today.

Sw 5/8. 17st 5lb
Cw 12/8. 15st 5lb

Total loss of 28lb 😁

Hoping to be 14st by Christmas and I'm very looking forward to buying new pyjamas as at the moment I'm too small for 20-22 but too big for 16-18
